ABSTRACT

The highest priority in the prevention of malignant tumors of the skin is given to the avoidance of sun-induced reddening of the skin and sunburn at any age. The usual recommendation is to keep out of the sun between 11 am and 3 pm, wear a sun-hat and appropriate clothing, and use a sun screen (UV-A and UV-B) that doesn't wash off on exposed skin and when in the water. With regard to the wearing of clothing protecting against UV radiation, compliance must be expected to be low, since just such protective clothing (in particularthick, densely-woven materials) is unsuitable for the summer. Using detergents containing a UV absorber in the home wash, even light summer wear can be made to offer good UV protection.

ABSTRACT

VasoSeal is a purified bovine, absorbable collagen plug currently successfully used to close the femoral arterial puncture site after cardiac catheterization under full anticoagulation. Up to now there has been no experience with potential complications. We observed acute ischemia in the right lower leg of 2/100 patients 36 resp. 24 h after successful closure of the puncture site with VasoSeal. Angiography confirmed acute occlusion of the distal A. poplitea dextra. A 25-mm resp. 50-mm long cylindrical foreign body embolus was removed with a Fogarty-catheter by retrograde indirect embolectomy. Histopathology confirmed a fresh collagen clot with appositional thrombosis.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a comparison of the diagnostic value of CT studies and conventional radiological diagnosis, based on 46 CT studies, in patients with inflammatory bone lesions of the spine (n = 20) before and after surgical interventions (n = 12). In cases with a tentative clinical diagnosis of an inflammatory bone lesion, CT will not supplant conventional radiological diagnosis as the roentgenologic method of first choice. The superiority of CT is based on its ability to demonstrate intraspinal, paravertebral, and intervertebral complications. Osseous incorporation of spongiosa parts and the healing of paravertebral and intraspinal complications can be assessed more easily and accurately with CT.

ABSTRACT

The authors present the results of a performance comparison between CT and conventional x-ray film diagnosis (plain film and tomography) in 93 patients with benign, semimalignant and malignant bone tumours, basing on 124 CT examinations with 176 tumorous bone lesions of the vertebral column. The type, size and incidence rate of the superiority of CT in imaging tumorous bone lesions and its morphologic characterisation, are described.
