ABSTRACT

The protein instability with haze formation represents one of the main faults occurring in white and rosé wines. Among the various solutions industrially proposed, aspergillopepsin I (AP-I) supplementation coupled with must heating (60-75 °C) has been recently approved by OIV and the European Commission for ensuring protein stability of wines. This study investigates the impact of AP-I either applied independently or in combination with flash pasteurization on the chemical composition of grape must and wines derived from Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer. The efficacy on protein stability of a complete treatment combining heat (70 °C) and AP-I (HP) was confirmed through heat test and bentonite requirement, although no differences were observed between must heating and HP treatments. However, high-performance liquid chromatography analysis of unstable pathogenesis-related proteins revealed that AP-I supplementation reduced chitinases and thaumatin-like proteins compared to the non-enzymed samples, with and without must heating. Amino acid increase was reported only in HP musts, particularly in Sauvignon Blanc. The concentration of yeast-derived aroma compounds in Gewürztraminer wines was increased by must heating; compared to controls, flash pasteurization rose the overall acetate esters content of 85 % and HP of 43 %, mostly due to isoamyl acetate. However, heat treatments -with or without AP-I- reduced terpenes up to 68 %. Despite the different aroma profiles, no differences were observed for any descriptor for both varieties in wine tasting, and only a slight decrease trend was observed for the floral intensity and the typicality descriptors in heated wines.

ABSTRACT

Atypical aging (ATA) is a well-known wine defect that leads to unacceptable off-odors of wet mop, soap, waxy, furniture varnish, and dish rag. The main compound that is responsible for these undesired scents, 2-aminoacetophenone (AAP), results from the oxidative degradation of 3-indole acetic acid. This study aimed to investigate different technological factors for a possible effect on the oxygen radical absorption capacity (ORAC) and ATA development in white wine. Oxygenation during fermentation did not result in a significant effect on the development of ORAC or ATA development. Instead, the addition of ascorbic acid after vinification led to increased ORAC and decreased AAP formation. The first evidence of a tendency toward a correlation between ORAC and potential ATA development was found, with r = 0.365. This study showed the potential of the ORAC assay for an early assessment of the possible formation of ATA during wine storage.

The need to reduce the use of pesticides in viticulture is increasing the interest in wines produced using fungal-resistant grapevine varieties, which are characterized by relevant contents of both monoglucoside and diglucoside anthocyanins. Aging in wooden barrels induces oxygen permeation into wine, but little is known about diglucoside anthocyanin evolution. Cabernet cortis wine was subjected to addition of oxygen and oak chips, and the anthocyanin changes were followed for 1 month. Decreases of 90% total monoglucosides, 80% acylated monoglucosides, 65% diglucosides, and 90% acylated diglucosides were observed. Monoglucosides formed pyranoanthocyanins, and the lower steric hindrance favored their polymerization with flavanols. Instead, the decrease in diglucosides was correlated to the number of hydroxyl groups of ring B, indicating the predominant oxidation of aglycones. However, three flavonol-anthocyanin-diglucoside derivatives named (epi)catechin-ethyl-Mv-dihexoside, (epi)catechin-ethyl-Pn-dihexoside, and (epi)catechin-Mv-dihexoside A-type were identified in wine for the first time. These research findings are useful for tuning suitable oenological practices to stabilize the color of these wines (type of barrel, aging times, oxygenation practices) and lower the malvin content, which currently is recommended by the OIV at a maximum of 15 mg/L and is a critical issue for their commercialization.

ABSTRACT

Traditional sparkling wine production is a lengthy and costly process, involving a double fermentation step and a period of aging sur lie; thus, monitoring quality during the key manufacturing stages is crucial. The effects of the second fermentation on the development of 2-aminoacetophenone (AAP), the main marker of the atypical aging (ATA) defect, were investigated on 55 base wines (BWs) and corresponding sparkling wines (SWs) produced in an experimental winery. While the AAP content of the SWs was observed to be higher than the BWs, it was found that an artificial aging test carried out on the BWs could be a good predictor of ATA development in SWs. Further, the antioxidant capacity of the SWs was noticed to correlate well with the potential AAP formed during accelerated aging. Finally, an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) model of linearization capable of predicting AAP formation in SWs using the data obtained from the corresponding BWs was created.

INTRODUCTION: Voice disorders and burnout syndrome are common among teachers. This study aimed to explore the relationship among vocal problems, burnout syndrome, and some personal work factors. METHODS: This cross-sectional descriptive study enrolled 90 nonuniversity teachers who completed the Multidimensional Vocal Scale for Teachers (EVM-D) to evaluate vocal problems and an adapted Spanish version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educators Survey (MBI-ES) to detect burnout syndrome. RESULTS: Overall, 16% of teachers expressed symptoms compatible with burnout, and 60% of them were in the interval above the 75th percentile of the EVM-D, i.e., they had a high risk of vocal problems. An association between burnout and more vocal problems was established among teachers, particularly between the vocal symptoms and vocal abuse dimensions with the emotional exhaustion subscale of the MBI-ES. A history of anxiety/depression and fewer years of professional experience were associated with more vocal problems. The burnout group perceived more "loss of vocal power," "vocal fatigue," "vocal effort," and "hoarseness." Vocal abuse items received the highest scores of EVM-D. However, only "shouting" in the classroom was significantly different between the groups with and without burnout. CONCLUSION: Emotional exhaustion of burnout syndrome, history of anxiety/depression, and a shorter professional experience were associated with vocal problems, which could limit the performance of teachers. Reducing classroom noise, establishing strategies to avoid shouting, or strengthening personal accomplishments in teachers could be useful in breaking the cycle of vocal problems and emotional exhaustion, particularly at the beginning of their professional experience.

ABSTRACT

Objetivo: Evaluar si la hidratación combinada (sistémico y superficial) disminuye síntomas vocales y mejora la eficiencia glótica en una muestra de estudiantes de Logopedia. Material y Métodos: Estudio cuasi-experimental con grupo Hidratación (N=20) y grupo Control (N=19) con valoración pre y post-hidratación (ingesta de agua 1.500 ml/día e inhalaciones dos veces/día durante una semana). Se analizaron factores deshidratantes relacionados con la voz (uso vocal, tabaco, alcohol, café, respiración bucal), síntomas vocales y eficiencia glótica a través del Tiempo Máximo Fonación, Fo, Jitter % y Shimmer %, usando Multi-Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP). Resultados: Grupo Hidratación disminuyó significativamente sequedad (p = 0,013), carraspeo (p = 0,005), fatiga vocal (p = 0,015), dolor faríngeo (p = 0,009), Shimmer % (p = 0,048) frente al grupo Control que sólo disminuyó el carraspeo (p = 0,02). Objective: To evaluate if a combined hydration (systemic and superficial) decreases the vocal symptoms and improves the glottic efficiency in a sample of university students of Speech therapist. Material and Methods: Quasi-experimental study with Hydration group (N=20) and Control group (N=19) with pre and post-hydration assessment (water intake 1.500 ml/day and steam twice/day for a week). Voice-related dehydrating factors (vocal use, tobacco, alcohol, coffee, oral breathing), vocal symptoms and glottic efficiency through Maximum Phonation Time, Fo, Jitter % and Shimmer %, using Multi-Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP) were analyzed. Results: Hydration group significantly decreased dryness (p = .013=, throat clearing (p = .005), vocal fatigue (p = .015), pain throat (p = .009) and Shimmer % (p = .048) compared to the Control group, which only decreased throat clearing (p = .02). Discussion: The combined hydration may be a useful measure to improve vocal health for future speech-language-pathologists. (AU)

BACKGROUND: Official stable isotope databases, based on the analysis of (D/H)I ethanol , (D/H)II ethanol , δ13 Cethanol and δ18 Owater of wine, are an indispensable tool for establishing the limits beyond which the mislabeling or the addition of sugar and/or water in wine production can be detected. The present study investigates, for the first time, whether the use of hybrid varieties instead of European Vitis vinifera for wine production can have an impact on the stable isotope ratios. RESULTS: The analyses were performed by isotope ratio mass spectrometry and site-specific natural isotope fractionation by nuclear magnetic resonance, in accordance with the official methods of the International Organization of Grapes and Wine. The comparison shows the tendency of some stable isotope ratios of hybrid varieties, in particular (D/H)I , to deviate from the regional averages of the V. vinifera samples. Notably, Baron, Monarch and Regent showed significantly different values at one of the two sampling sites. Particularly high δ13 C values characterize Helios compared to other hybrid varieties. CONCLUSION: For the first time, and from an isotopic point of view, the present study investigates the wine obtained from hybrid varieties, showing that further attention should be paid to their interpretation, on the basis of the database established according to the European Regulation 2018/273. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: Atypical ageing (ATA) is an aroma defect that occurs in white wines and entails a loss of varietal aromas as well as scents of wet mop, shoe polish and dish rag. 2-Aminoacetophenone (2AAP) - a degradation product of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) - has been described as the main odour-active compound and chemical marker responsible for this off-flavour. A stress reaction in the vineyard triggered by climatic, pedological and viticultural factors can ultimately cause ATA development in wines and remarkably affect wine quality. The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of three grapevine management systems on the occurrence of ATA. The experiments were carried out on Pinot Blanc grape samples from vines cultivated using one conventional and two organic approaches. The management systems mainly differed for the fertilisation regime and the weed control. RESULTS: The amino acid profiles as well as 2AAP and its precursors were quantified in musts and wines using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a high-resolution mass spectrometer. The results showed the existence of a strong vintage effect, while no influence of the use of different agronomic systems was observed. CONCLUSION: The study revealed that an efficient implementation of different grapevine production systems did not affect ATA development in Pinot Blanc wines. This finding is of great relevance for winegrowers and winemakers as it demonstrates that a well-planned organic management system correctly adjusted to the climatic conditions does not pose a threat towards the development of ATA-related compounds in wine. © 2022 The Authors. ABSTRACT

Bacteria have a fundamental role in determining the fitness of grapevine, the composition of grapes and the features of wines but at present, little information is available. In this work, the bacteria colonizing the different portions of grapevine (bark, leaves and grapes) were explored in the vineyards of the Alpine region of Trentino, considering the impact of different environmental and agronomical variables. The vineyards included in the work were selected based on their different geographical positions (altitude) and grapevine training systems in order to explore the whole variability of the grapevine ecosystem. Moreover, the surface amount of copper was measured on grapes and leaves during the vegetative growth. Bacterial analysis, performed using plate counts and Illumina MiSeq, revealed an increase in the concentration of grape bacteria proportional to the progress of the ripening stage. Conversely, the peak of bacterial concentration onto leaf and bark samples occurred in August, probably due to the more favourable environmental conditions. In bark samples, the bacterial microbiota reached the 7 log CFU/cm2, while 6 log UFC/g were measured in grape samples. A remarkable biodiversity was observed, with 13 phyla, 35 classes, 55 orders, 78 families and 95 genera of bacteria present. The presence of some taxa (Alphaproteobacteria, Desulfovibrionaceae, Clostriadiales, Oscillospira, Lachnospiraceae and Bacteroidales) was ubiquitous in all vineyards, but differences in terms of relative abundance were observed according to the vegetative stage, altitude of the vineyard and training system. Bacteria having oenological implication (Lactobacillus, Pediococcus and Oenococcus) were detected in grape samples collected in August, in low abundance. The data revealed a complex bacterial ecosystem inside the vineyard that, while maintaining common traits, evolves according to environmental and agronomical inputs. This study contributes to define the role of bacteria in the complex balance established in each vineyard between human actions and agricultural environment, known as terroir.

ABSTRACT

The biodiversity of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was studied in the Montalcino area (Italy). Two wineries were involved in the study, which compared the genotypic and oenological characteristics of the S. cerevisiae strains isolated in spontaneous fermentations. After isolation yeasts were identified by 26S rRNA gene sequence analysis, and S. cerevisiae strains were characterized through interdelta sequence analysis (ISA). Oenological tests were performed in synthetic grape must by varying the magnitude of the main wine-imiting factors. The evolution of alcoholic fermentation was monitored by measuring sugar consumption and flow cytometry. The results revealed the prevalence of S. cerevisiae from the third day of fermentation and the presence of a wide range of S. cerevisiae strains having ISA profiles characteristic of each winery. From an oenological point of view, the features of such strains, in terms of resistance to wine-limiting factors, seemed to be linked to the main oenological variables applied in the production process of each winery. Extreme fermentation temperatures and copper residues are the variables that mostly depress the yeast population, in terms of fermentation rate and cell viability. Flow cytometry revealed the different impact of limiting factors on the viability of yeast by the quantification of the ratio between live/dead yeast cells of each strain, suggesting different mechanisms of inhibition, for instance stuck of cell growth or cell killing, in response to the different stress factors.

OBJECTIVE: The duration and the sleep quality are related to the emotional status and the academic performance in adolescents. The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of sleep in a group of adolescents, and to explore its relationship with school adjustment and performance. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was made with 56 adolescents aged 13-17 years from a high school institute in an urban district of La Coruña city was performed during the scholar´s year 2016-2017. The participants completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (ICSP) and the Brief School Adjustment Scale, and a brief questionnaire about their sleep habits and school scores. Descriptive analysis and different comparative parametric or not parametric statistical tests were applied according to type of variable; statistical significant value was considerate for p<0.10. RESULTS: The 35.7% of sample was poor sleepers and sleepiness was the most altered variable in ICSP. The female participants tended to sleep less than the male participants, and all of them went to sleep 100 minutes later on the weekend. Being a good or bad sleeper did not affect academic performance. Globally the school adjustment was satisfactory. Diurnal dysfunction was related to a worse adolescent-teacher and adolescent-classmate relationship. Diurnal dysfunction was also related to a poor motivation to perform academic tasks. CONCLUSIONS: Sleepiness is the most relevant problem in poor sleepers. Sleepiness has a negative influence on school adjustment and motivation for school activities of all adolescents; it is frequent and underestimated in most of the cases.


OBJETIVO: La duración y calidad del sueño están relacionadas en los adolescentes con su estado emocional y rendimiento académico. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la calidad del sueño en un grupo de jóvenes y explorar su relación con el ajuste y rendimiento escolar. METODOS: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo-transversal, con 56 adolescentes entre 13 y 17 años de un instituto de educación secundaria de un distrito de La Coruña, durante el curso 2016-2017. Los participantes cumplimentaron el Índice de Calidad del Sueño de Pittsburgh (ICSP), la Escala Breve de Ajuste Escolar y un breve cuestionario sobre hábitos de sueño y calificaciones académicas. Realizamos el análisis descriptivo y diferentes pruebas comparativas o de asociación estadística por métodos paramétricos o no paramétricos según cada variable, considerándose significativos valores de p<0,10. RESULTADOS: El 35,7% de la muestra se clasificó como mala durmiente y la somnolencia fue la variable más alterada del ICSP. Las mujeres dormían significativamente menos que los varones, aunque ambos retrasaban 100 minutos el sueño durante el fin de semana. Ser buen o mal durmiente no afectó al rendimiento académico. El ajuste escolar fue satisfactorio globalmente. Las variables que expresaron desajuste en la interacción con los profesores y compañeros de clase, así como la realización de tareas escolares, se relacionaron con la disfunción diurna. CONCLUSIONES: La somnolencia es el problema más relevante en el grupo de malos durmientes. Esta puede influir negativamente en el ajuste escolar y en la motivación para las actividades escolares de todos los adolescentes, siendo frecuente y subestimada en la mayoría de los casos.

ABSTRACT

Polyphenols, especially anthocyanins, play an important role on red wine sensory qualities and their evolution during storage. High Power Ultrasound (HPU) has been recognized as one of the most promising technologies which can be applied in winemaking processes for several purposes, and it is recently officially approved for crushed grapes treatments. The effect of ultrasound amplitude (41 and 81%) and treatment time (1, 3, and 5 min) has been studied on anthocyanins, flavan-3-ols, tannins, polymerized pigments, HCl index, and the color intensity of two finished red young wines. Anthocyanins and phenols compounds were not degraded with an increase in amplitude and sonication time, and the chromatic properties of the selected wines were preserved. Amplitude and ultrasound time were also evaluated considering their effect on evolution of anthocyanin content and phenolic stability indices during the first thirty days of storage. The higher level of amplitude (81%) induced a higher percentage decrease in tannins, 15% and 40% after 15 and 30 days of storage, respectively, compared to untreated wine which did not show a significant change during storage. HPU shows a possible chemical effect on the evolution of some analytical indices during bottling maturation, but their effectiveness could be strictly linked with the initial phenolic profile and ratios between polyphenol classes.

BACKGROUND: Over recent years, a new wave of disease-tolerant to mildew varieties has flooded the viticulture sector, for reasons of human safety and economic expediency. These hybrid grape cultivars are selected mainly on the basis of their intrinsic capability to counter the attack of the main fungal diseases that affect grape production, such as downy mildew and powdery mildew. However, their organoleptic and oenological characteristics have not yet been studied in depth for purposes of both juice and wine production, due to the high number of newly proposed germplasms and the lack of information about their adaptability to different environments. This work examines the thiol aroma precursors concentration in 64 red and white disease-tolerant hybrid varieties in the vine germplasm collections of Consiglio per la ricerca in agricoltura e l'analisi dell'economia agraria-Viticulture and Enology Research Center and Fondazione Edmund Mach, both from the north-east of Italy. RESULTS: All cultivars showed the presence of 3-mercaptohexan-1-ol (3MH) precursors, ranging from 4.4 to 1141 µg kg-1 for 3-S-glutathionyl hexan-1-ol (GSH-3MH), and from 0.3 to 136 µg kg-1 for 3-S-cysteinyl 3-hexan-1-ol. The concentration of GSH-3MH exceeded 600 µg kg-1 in eight varieties, with values comparable to those of the richest Vitis vinifera reported so far. On average, red grapes showed higher concentrations of 3MH precursors than white ones did. Only two hybrids had 4-mercapto-4-methylpentan-2-one (4MMP) precursors over the limit of quantification, albeit with a much higher concentration than those normally reported in Sauvignon Blanc. CONCLUSION: This is the first detailed survey of 3MH and 4MMP precursors carried out taking into account a considerable number of hybrid grape varieties. The results show that some of these varieties could be interesting for the production of tropical juices or tropical-aromatic wines and soft drinks, through the enzymatic liberation of thiol aromas, as well as for the production of aromatizing tannins to be used in the food industry. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

The effect of ultrasound (20 kHz, 153 µm) on the prefermentation extraction mechanisms in Sauvignon Blanc grapes was studied, focusing on 3-mercaptohexan-1-ol (3MH) and 4-mercapto-4-methyl-pentan-2-one (4MMP) precursors linked to glutathione (GSH) and cysteine (Cys). The treatment determined a positive extraction trend between the duration (untreated, 3 and 5 min) and the conductivity or the concentration of catechins and total phenols, significantly differentiated after 5 min. Nevertheless, the concentration of the thiol precursors in grape juice not only remained undifferentiated, but that of 3-S-glutathionyl mercaptohexan-1-ol showed a negative trend with the treatment time applied (168 ± 43, 156 ± 36, and 149 ± 32 µg/L, respectively, for control, 3 and 5 min). The divergence on the effect between families of compounds suggests an interaction between the sonication treatment and thiol precursor molecules. In order to evaluate the possible degradation properly, ultrasound was applied in a model solution spiked with 3MH and 4MMP precursors, reproducing the conditions of grapes. Except for Cys-3MH, the mean concentration (n = 5) for the rest of the precursors was significantly lower in treated samples, predominantly in those linked to glutathione (~-22% and ~18% for GSH-3MH and GSH-4MMP) rather than to cysteine (~-6%~-8% for Cys-3MH and Cys-4MMP). The degradation of precursors was associated with a significant increase of 3MH and 4MMP. The formation of volatile thiols following sonication is interesting from a technological point of view, as they are key aroma compounds of wine and potentially exploitable in the wine industry through specific vinification protocols.

ABSTRACT

FUNDAMENTOS: La duración y calidad del sueño están relacionadas en los adolescentes con su estado emocional y rendimiento académico. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la calidad del sueño en un grupo de jóvenes y explorar su relación con el ajuste y rendimiento escolar. MÉTODOS: Se realizó un estudio descriptivotransversal, con 56 adolescentes entre 13 y 17 años de un instituto de educación secundaria de un distrito de La Coruña, durante el curso 2016-2017. Los participantes cumplimentaron el Índice de Calidad del Sueño de Pittsburgh (ICSP), la Escala Breve de Ajuste Escolar y un breve cuestionario sobre hábitos de sueño y calificaciones académicas. Realizamos el análisis descriptivo y diferentes pruebas comparativas o de asociación estadística por métodos paramétricos o no paramétricos según cada variable, considerándose significativos valores de p < 0,10. RESULTADOS: El 35,7% de la muestra se clasificó como mala durmiente y la somnolencia fue la variable más alterada del ICSP. Las mujeres dormían significativamente menos que los varones, aunque ambos retrasaban 100 minutos el sueño durante el fin de semana. Ser buen o mal durmiente no afectó al rendimiento académico. El ajuste escolar fue satisfactorio globalmente. Las variables que expresaron desajuste en la interacción con los profesores y compañeros de clase, así como la realización de tareas escolares, se relacionaron con la disfunción diurna. CONCLUSIONES: La somnolencia es el problema más relevante en el grupo de malos durmientes. Esta puede influir negativamente en el ajuste escolar y en la motivación para las actividades escolares de todos los adolescentes, siendo frecuente y subestimada en la mayoría de los casos


BACKGROUND: The duration and the sleep quality are related to the emotional status and the academic performance in adolescents. The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of sleep in a group of adolescents, and to explore its relationship with school adjustment and performance. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was made with 56 adolescents aged 13-17 years from a high school institute in an urban district of La Coruña city was performed during the scholar's year 2016-2017. The participants completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (ICSP) and the Brief School Adjustment Scale, and a brief questionnaire about their sleep habits and school scores. Descriptive analysis and different comparative parametric or not parametric statistical tests were applied according to type of variable; statistical significant value was considerate for p < 0.10. RESULTS: The 35.7% of sample was poor sleepers and sleepiness was the most altered variable in ICSP. The female participants tended to sleep less than the male participants, and all of them went to sleep 100 minutes later on the weekend. Being a good or bad sleeper did not affect academic performance. Globally the school adjustment was satisfactory. Diurnal dysfunction was related to a worse adolescent-teacher and adolescent-classmate relationship. Diurnal dysfunction was also related to a poor motivation to perform academic tasks. CONCLUSIONS: Sleepiness is the most relevant problem in poor sleepers. Sleepiness has a negative influence on school adjustment and motivation for school activities of all adolescents; it is frequent and underestimated in most of the cases

ABSTRACT

The formation of ethylphosphonate (fosetyl) was investigated in wine matrices. In experimental conditions, alcoholic fermentation of grape juices spiked with phosphonic acid resulted in wines with detectable amounts of fosetyl. The ageing period adopted for these wines further increased the fosetyl content in the absence of yeast lees, thus indicating a chemical origin. A model wine assay was performed in order to study the main thermodynamic variables affecting the Fisher reaction. The results obtained allowed us to report evidence of ethylphosphonate formation in winemaking conditions, for the first time to the best of our knowledge.

ABSTRACT

Manual measurements of foot anthropometry can lead to errors since this task involves the experience of the specialist who performs them, resulting in different subjective measures from the same footprint. Moreover, some of the diagnoses that are given to classify a footprint deformity are based on a qualitative interpretation by the physician; there is no quantitative interpretation of the footprint. The importance of providing a correct and accurate diagnosis lies in the need to ensure that an appropriate treatment is provided for the improvement of the patient without risking his or her health. Therefore, this article presents a smart sensor that integrates the capture of the footprint, a low computational-cost analysis of the image and the interpretation of the results through a quantitative evaluation. The smart sensor implemented required the use of a camera (Logitech C920) connected to a Raspberry Pi 3, where a graphical interface was made for the capture and processing of the image, and it was adapted to a podoscope conventionally used by specialists such as orthopedist, physiotherapists and podiatrists. The footprint diagnosis smart sensor (FPDSS) has proven to be robust to different types of deformity, precise, sensitive and correlated in 0.99 with the measurements from the digitalized image of the ink mat.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the presence of habits and symptoms of vocal hyperfunction in the parents of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: Parents of 24 children with ADHD and 30 children of a control group completed a specific questionnaire to detect the hyperfunctional use of the voice (excessive talking, excessive loudness, talking too fast, and shouting), hoarseness, vocal fatigue, mental and physical fatigue, and the degree of parental concern for the vocal health of their child. RESULTS: Parents of children with ADHD spoke more often, faster, and stronger than the parents of the control group; in addition, they also used a louder volume than they usually used when they spoke to their children. The parents manifested more vocal, mental, and physical fatigue than the parents of the control group. There was a significant correlation between the "concern" for the vocal health of their children with respect to vocal symptoms of the children, the habits of vocal hyperfunctioning, and the symptoms suffered by the parents. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the parents of children with ADHD change their vocal attitude when communicating with their children. Most likely, the increased concern of parents with ADHD children and their respective level of stress lead to hyperfunctional vocal usage. This subsequently leads to symptoms of vocal, physical, and mental fatigue at the end of the day.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the presence of etiologic factors, symptoms, and vocal acoustic alterations related to vocal hyperfunction in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHOD: In 23 children with ADHD and 28 control children, vocal acoustic exploration was performed to analyze the F0, jitter %, and voice turbulence index for the sustained vowels /a/ and /i/ and the average tone and intensity and tonal modulation in tests of continuous speech. The children's parents completed a specific questionnaire aimed at detecting etiologic factors and vocal symptoms. RESULTS: Children with ADHD displayed more vocal symptoms (hoarseness, neck strain, and shortness of breath while talking) and more etiologic factors (they shouted more, spoke louder and faster, and became angry more easily) than did children in the Control group. Likewise, children in the ADHD group exhibited a greater % jitter and a lower average intensity in the continuous speech tests. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that children with ADHD display greater vocal hyperfunction as compared with children in the Control group and suggest a higher risk of developing dysphonia. The results of this study could be useful for designing vocal programs focusing on vocal education and hygiene to prevent and decrease vocal risks and on promoting vocal health in children with ADHD.
