ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Fructooligosaccharide (FOS) supplementation can stimulate beneficial intestinal bacteria growth, but little is known about its influence on training performance. Therefore, this study analyzed FOS and exercise effects on gut microbiota and intestinal morphology of C57Bl/6 mice. METHODS: Forty male mice were divided into four groups: standard diet-sedentary (SDS), standard diet-exercised (SDE), FOS supplemented (7.5% FOS)-sedentary (FDS), and FOS supplemented-exercised (FDE), n = 10 each group. Exercise training consisted of 60 min/day, 3 days/week, for 12 weeks. RESULTS: SDE and FDE groups had an increase in aerobic performance compared to the pretraining period and SDS and FDS groups (P < 0.01), respectively. Groups with FOS increased colonic crypts size (P < 0.05). The FDE group presented rich microbiota (α-diversity) compared to other groups. The FDE group also acquired a greater microbial abundance (ß-diversity) than other groups. The FDE group had a decrease in the Ruminococcaceae (P < 0.002) and an increase in Roseburia (P < 0.003), Enterorhabdus (P < 0.004) and Anaerotruncus (P < 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that aerobic exercise associated with FOS supplementation modulates gut microbiota and can increase colonic crypt size without improving endurance exercise performance.

ABSTRACT

This study analyzed the relationship between anthropometric measures, cardiorespiratory capacity, strength, power, and local muscle endurance with performance in the CrossFit® Open 2020. For this, 17 volunteers (6 women) (29.0 ± 7.2 years) completed, on separate weeks, tests for body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), maximal oxygen consumption (2 km row test), muscle strength (one repetition maximum (1 RM) back and front squat, isometric peak torque), muscle power (1 RM snatch and clean and jerk) and muscle endurance (Tibana test), which were compared with performance during the CrossFit® Open 2020. Specific tests of localized muscular endurance and muscle strength had the strongest relationship with performance in the CrossFit® Open 2020. On the other hand, the percentage of fat and cardiorespiratory capacity were not significantly correlated with CrossFit® Open 2020 workout performance. Coaches and practitioners should therefore utilize these findings to assess physical fitness and organize the distribution of the training session based on less developed physical needs, in order to ensure an appropriate physiological adaptation for a given competition.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results of a multidisciplinary program to promote healthy habits on anthropometric and biochemical parameters on participants of the Family Health Strategy of the Distrito Federal. METHODS: The sample consisted of 279 overweight and obese adults of both sexes divided into two groups: intervention (IG, n=198) and control group (CG, n=89). The IG received standard Family Health Strategy care plus a multidisciplinary health promoting program that included dietary interventions and physical activity, called Set Waist Program. The control group received only standard ESF care. Data were collected at baseline and after 4 and 8 months of follow up. Body mass index, waist circumference, fasting blood glucose and lipid profile were assessed. RESULTS: Prevalence of obesity (63.3% to 49.4%, p=0.027) and waist circumference (102.2cm to 94.8cm, p<0.0001) were significantly reduced in IG. Total cholesterol, LDL and HDL-cholesterol were reduced in both groups. CONCLUSION: Reductions in anthropometric measures were maximized through simple interventions that stimulated lifestyle changes. These results suggest that multidisciplinary initiatives such the Set Waist Program can be incorporated into other Family Health Strategy teams to optimize the control of obesity and health promotion. Participant compliance is an issue that deserves further investigation...

ABSTRACT

O uso do ML permitiu registrar o planejamento; refinar objetivos; acompanhar a implantação; identificar ações sobrepostas, barreiras e facilitadores; adequar a proposta à realidade encontrada; e definir metas e variáveis avaliativas.

This study aims to report the development of a health promotion project in the Family Health Strategy (ESF) by developing the logical model (ML), with emphasis in planning and implementation during it?s first working year. The methodology of developing the ML identified project goals and activities, and resources and strategies needed to achieve them. The State Department of Health of the Federal District (DF) conceived the project and established internal and external partnerships with universities and research centers for its development in the region of São Sebastião-DF. Health professionals of local ESF were sensitized and 100% of them were trained, enabling service to offer users opportunities to adopt healthy lifestyles with emphasis on diet and physical activity. Overweight adults enrolled in the local ESF were invited to participate and 279 users had their data collected and were followed thought the actions taken during the year (13 multidisciplinary workshops and regular physical activity options). The greater adherence recorded was 61.1% in nutrition workshop and the lowest adherence was 11.6% in motivational support group. The use of ML has enabled to register the planning, refine goals, monitor implementation, identify overlapping actions, barriers and facilitators, tailor the proposal to the actual situation, and define evaluative goals and variables. The ML development strengthened the role of intersectoral cooperation in the development of health promoting projects; improved its operation and will facilitate its replication and expansion in similar settings.
