ABSTRACT
The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to determine if implementing gamification teaching methodologies in nondigital format into nursing orientation has a positive effect on orientees' motivation and knowledge retention. The study included a convenience sample of 152 registered nurses who attended the nursing orientation class at a Midwestern acute care facility. This study found that gamification had a positive effect on the orientees' motivation and knowledge retention.

Nursing professional development specialists may find it challenging time and cost-wise to meet the educational needs of nurses in the areas of research and evidence-based practice amidst competing education priorities. Furthermore, it may be difficult to find presenters with the necessary knowledge and expertise to do so. Collaboration among local hospitals to provide a high-quality research education program can advance scholarly work within the community and can help each organization meet selected Magnet® requirements in an economical way.

With national emphasis on increasing baccalaureate-prepared nurses, the role of the staff development educator of promoting lifelong learning is ideal for advising and mentoring non-bachelor's-prepared nurses to return to school. However, an understanding of the motivators and barriers for nurses to return to school is essential for success. A descriptive correlational research study was completed to determine the motivators and barriers of returning to school for registered nurses without a bachelor's degree.

Using a model for the utilization of research can aid and direct staff development educators in the appropriate application of existing research-based knowledge and help prevent the pitfalls of using research inaccurately. The Stetler Model of Research Utilization was applied to obtain support for and revitalize a preceptor program at one large metropolitan tertiary medical center. Applying the Stetler Model resulted in the improvement of nurses' satisfaction with their preceptors and a reduction in turnover rate.
