PIP: 122 Negro primigravidae under 16 years of age were compared with 122 primigravidae aged 22 (controls) in Jamaica to determine differences in hazards of pregnancy. The average age of menarche was 12.8 years in the juvenile mothers and 14.3 years in the older mothers. Hypertension occu rred in 22 (18%) juvenile mothers compared to 12 (10%) controls. 23 (19%) of the juveniles and only 3 (2%) of the controls delivered before the 36th week of pregnancy. The combined rate of caesarean section, forceps delivery, and vacuum extraction was twice as high in the juvenile group as in the older group. There was a higher incidence of fetal distress (7) in the teenagers' babies compared to those of the controls (2), and 14 (11.5%) teenagers had postpartum hemorrhage compared to only 7 (5.8%) controls. 16 babies of juvenile mothers had Apgar scores below 7 compared to 5 of older mothers. There were 2 stillbirths adn 2 neonatal deaths in the juvenile group and only 1 stillbirth in the control group. Whereas 25 babies of the young mothers weighed less than 2.5 kg at birth, only 8 babies of the controls did so.^ieng
