ABSTRACT

In 1924, a new figure appeared on the pages of Brazilian newspapers: "Professor Mozart." In the 1920s and 1930s, Mozart Dias Teixeira practiced healing in several Brazilian cities, sparking controversy among certain segments of society. A threefold analysis of the case is presented: describing the man himself and the debate surrounding his healing methods; showing how the controversies inspired the production and circulation of art among the population; and discussing the issues of charlatanism and professional and religious freedom. The study intends to contribute to the historiography on spiritism, occultism, and psychic sciences in Brazil.

ABSTRACT

Vector-borne diseases of zoonotic and/or veterinary relevance have been increasingly reported in horses globally, although data regarding working and military horses is lacking. Portuguese military horses may constitute a risk group for these pathogens, as they frequently work outdoors in various regions of the country. This study included 101 apparently healthy horses belonging to the Portuguese National Republican Guard. Blood samples were analyzed to determine the presence and prevalence of piroplasms, Anaplasmataceae, Rickettsia spp., and filarioid helminths. Overall 32.7% of the horses gave positive results for Theileria equi. Two genotypes of T. equi were verified. No positive results were recorded for Anaplasma spp., Rickettsia spp., filarioid helminthes, and Babesia caballi. As equine piroplasmosis is a severe infectious tick-borne disease responsible for significant losses in equine production and with numerous impacts in the international movement of horses, adequate treatment, and preventive measures are needed to reduce exposure to vectors and future infections.

ABSTRACT

Pneumoperitoneum and cystic intestinal pneumatosis associated to chemotherapy treatment are rare entities, with non-well stablished etiology and controversial management. We report two cases of oncological patients presenting with this complication as incidental finding in CT scan. Their course was favourable under conservative non-surgical approach associated with interruption of chemoterapy treatment.

ABSTRACT

Studies show the importance of the basal ganglia and thalamus in memory, attention, selection and monitoring of information. In this research we analyze four cases with unilateral subcortical lesions after stroke. The participants were assessed with the “Questionnaire of sociocultural and health aspects” and the “NEUPSILIN Brief Neuropsychological Assessment Instrument”. The objective was to analyze and discuss discrepancies in performance on different memory tasks in patients with subcortical lesions. All patients showed prejudice in the immediate recall task and none in the delayed recall task. The results appear to be related to a lower capacity to create strategies, organize information and retain new stimuli. We emphasize the involvement of these structures in circuits that are part of, together with cortical regions, the processing of working memory and executive functions. Future studies should include larger samples and control the influence of sociodemographic variables.
