ABSTRACT

Schistosomiasis is considered one of the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), which affects around 240 million people worldwide. In Brazil, Schistosomiasis mansoni has been registered in 19 states, predominantly in rural areas. This study aimed to analyze the spatial distribution of Schistosomiasis mansoni cases in the Maranhao State from 2007 to 2016, as well as the temporal trend over this period. The data were obtained from secondary sources: Schistosomiasis Control Program of Maranhao (PCE-MA) and Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN). The State Health Regions (HRs) were considered analysis units. Maranhao had a positivity rate of 3.8 for the period. The Regions that presented the highest percentages of positivity in the state were Pinheiro (7.92), Ze Doca (3.30), and Viana (3.10). Municipalities such as Bacuri, Serrano do Maranhao, and Bequimao, located in the Pinheiro HR, showed positivity rates of 16.56, 13.31, and 11.01 respectively. The spatial analysis of schistosomiasis cases showed that Maranhao has two main centers for the spread of the disease, both located in the northern portion of the state, namely the Baixada Maranhense and the east coast. This study concluded that the positivity of Schistosomiasis mansoni in Maranhao was stable over the analyzed period. The state still maintains the Baixada Maranhense micro-region as an important area for the spread of the disease reaching socially vulnerable population groups.

BACKGROUND: Flavonoids from a variety of fruits, including açaí, have beneficial antioxidant activity in several diseases, including cancer. Breast cancer is the second most prevalent cancer among Brazilian women. Studies have shown the action of flavonoids on neoplastic cells, as well as on diabetes and neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between the consumption of açaí and the presence of chronic diseases in women residing in the rural area of São Luís, Maranhão. METHODS: A convenience sample of 150 women residing in the Maracanã neighborhood in São Luís, Maranhão, was used; the collected data included sociodemographic characteristics, habits, sexual and reproductive history, consumption of açaí, and history of cancer and other chronic diseases. The sample was divided into women who consumed açaí at least once a week (cases) and women who did not consume açaí (controls). Statistical analysis was performed to assess the relationships between those variables and the consumption of açaí. RESULTS: A total of 141 women (94%) consumed açaí. Among these, 79.3% were aged between 20 and 50 years, 78.67% were farmers or housewives, 64.67% were Pardo (mixed race), 76.67% were nonsmokers, 70% were not receiving hormonal therapy, 40.67% had already undergone mammography, 28% had already undergone breast ultrasound, and 27.33% had a family history of cancer, with breast cancer being the second most prevalent cancer. There was a higher prevalence of hypertension among women who did not consume açaí than that among those who did; however, previous cancer, family history of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes were more prevalent among the consumers of açaí. There were no statistically significant relationships. CONCLUSION: Flavonoids are known to have a beneficial effect on some types of neoplastic cells and other diseases; therefore, larger studies are necessary to better evaluate the beneficial effects of consuming foods containing flavonoids on these diseases.

BACKGROUND: Honey from Tiúba stingless bees (Melipona fasciculata) produced in three different ecosystems in Brazil (Cerrado, Litoral and Baixada), as well as a sample of honey from Apis mellifera bees from the Baixada region for comparison, were evaluated regarding viscosity, color, sensory profile and sensory acceptance. RESULTS: The honey from Tiúba was less viscous, with a darker color and lower purity of the color (chroma) in relation to honey from Apis mellifera. The sensory profile firmly differentiates the honeys. The Apis honey was mainly described as opaque, viscous and adhesive. Tiúba honey from the Cerrado region stood out as semi-bright, acid taste, alcoholic, propolis, bitter taste and spicy. Tiúba honey from the Litoral region was characterized by its yellow color, woody odor and medicine flavor. The Tiúba honey from the Baixada region was described as gold colored, fluid and citric. The Tiúba honey from the Cerrado region had similar sensory acceptance to the Apis honey, probably because it was specifically characterized through attributes of odor and flavor. On the contrary, the Tiúba honey from the Litoral and from the Baixada regions was less well accepted. CONCLUSION: The honeys are different regarding their physical and sensory properties, differences that result from the bee species and from the geographical origin of the honey. This study could contribute to the creation of a standard identity and specific quality for Melipona fasciculata honey, also contributing to its production and commercialization not only in Brazil, but also internationally. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

Schistosomiasis is a disease of global extent reaching populations in social vulnerability. One of the control measures of this parasitosis is the use of molluscicidal substances that can fight snails of the genus Biomphalaria, intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni. The aim of this work was to study the toxic activity of three mangrove species (Avicennia schaueriana Stapf. & Leech, ex Moldenke, 1939, Laguncularia racemosa (L.) CF Gaertn, 1807 and Rhizophora mangle L. 1753) on the biological activities of snails Biomphalaria glabrata. Hydroalcoholic extracts were prepared from the stem and leaves of each of the three plant species to which mollusks were exposed. The phytochemical analysis of plants showed the presence of important metabolites in the leaves and stems of L. racemosa and R. mangle, such as tannins and saponins, but the absence of these metabolites in A. schaueriana. Leaf and stem extracts of the three plant species showed low molluscicidal activity, not reaching the standards determined by the World Health Organization (WHO, 1983). L. racemosa and R. mangle has interfered with motility, feeding and oviposition of snails, unlike the extracts of A. schaueriana, which had no effect on these activities.

ABSTRACT: The honey from Tiúba bees (Melipona fasciculata) is commercially important in the Brazilian state of Maranhão. However, the absence of any specific legislation for this kind of honey is an obstacle to its increased production and commercialization. Determining the microbiological and physical-chemical characteristics of different Tiúba honey can inform the elaboration of specific legislation. Thus, honey samples from two Water Catchment Areas in Maranhão (Munim and Pericumã, sample size 20 for each) were collected and submitted for microbiological analysis (total coliforms, thermotolerant coliforms, molds and yeasts, Clostridium sulfite reducers and Salmonella sp.) and physical-chemical analysis (moisture content, reducing and non-reducing sugars, insoluble and soluble solids, ash content, acidity and pH). Most of honeys sampled were suitable for human consumption, except for one sample from Pericumã. Honeys from the two water catchment areas presented differences in some physicochemical characteristics, which can be attributed to the botanic, soil and climatic diversity of the two areas. Still, these Tiúba honey samples did not fall within the Brazilian legislation for Apis mellifera honey for some of the physical-chemical characteristics, and so is not properly regulated, thus reinforcing the need for specific legislation for this type of honey.


RESUMO: O mel de Tiúba (Melipona fasciculata) tem importância comercial na região do estado do Maranhão, no entanto a ausência de uma legislação específica para este mel entrava a ampliação de sua produção e comercialização. Dessa forma, faz-se necessário determinar as características microbiológicas e físico-químicas de méis de Tiúba, com o objetivo de fornecer subsídios para a elaboração de uma legislação específica. Assim, amostras de méis provenientes de duas bacias hidrográficas do Maranhão (Munim n = 20, e Pericumã n = 20) foram coletadas e submetidas às análises microbiológicas (coliformes totais, coliformes termotolerantes, bolores e leveduras, Clostridium sulfito redutores e Salmonella sp.) e físico-químicas (umidade, açúcares redutores e não redutores, sólidos insolúveis e solúveis, cinzas, acidez e pH). A maioria dos méis apresentou-se adequado microbiologicamente ao consumo humano, exceto uma amostra de mel proveniente de Pericumã. Os méis provenientes das duas bacias hidrográficas apresentaram diferenças em algumas características físico-químicas, o que pode ser atribuído à diversidade botânica, edáfica (solo) e climática das duas bacias. Ainda, os méis de Tiúba não se adequaram à legislação brasileira de Apis mellifera para algumas características físico-químicas, o que não permite sua regulamentação e, assim, reforça a necessidade de legislação específica para este tipo de mel.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate total and specific E immunoglobulin (IgE) antibody concentrations in underage subjects with respiratory allergic diseases. METHODS: This study was a transversal-type study in 100 underage subjects between 4 and 14 years old, with asthma and/or allergic rhinitis. Total and specific IgE were quantified for airborne fungi in the city of São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. Five distinct regions-North, South, Center, East and West-were selected so fungi could be collected monthly for 1 year. Twenty genera were identified. Aspergillus, Penicillium, Fusarium and Neurospora were selected for the preparation of sensitizing antigens from ELISA dishes. IgE total concentrations were estimated using the same method. RESULTS: IgE total serum concentration was increased in 97 % of the atopic subjects: 75 % of the subjects presented increased IgE anti-Aspergillus concentrations, 87 % presented IgE anti-Penicillium, 45 % presented IgE anti-Fusarium, and 46 % presented IgE anti-Neurospora. CONCLUSIONS: Atopic subjects presented simultaneous IgE total and specific elevations for the tested fungi, possibly due to polysensitization caused by the presence of fungi in all of the areas all year. However, determining the clinical significance of the results was not yet possible because most of the data were isolated variables.

The action of extracts from the stem, leaves, and fruit of Jatropha gossypiifolia on Biomphalaria glabrata was studied by analyzing survival, feeding capacity and oviposition ability. The extracts were obtained by macerating the plant parts in 92% ethanol, which were then evaporated until a dry residue was obtained and phytochemically studied. The molluscicidal activity on B. glabrata was investigated using the procedures recommended by WHO (1965). The amount of food ingested and oviposition were measured during each experiment. The extract of leaves from J. gossypiifolia was shown to be a strong molluscicidal agent, causing 100% mortality of B. glabrata, even in the lowest concentration tested, of 25 ppm. Regarding the fruit extract, there was variation in the mortality, depending on the concentration used (100, 75, 50 and 25 ppm). The snails that were in contact with the fruit extract had significant reduction in feeding and number of embryos in comparison to the control. The stem extract did not present molluscicidal activity nor had any influence on the feeding and oviposition abilities of B. glabrata, in the concentrations tested. In conclusion, the extracts of leaves and fruits of J. gossypiifolia investigated in this work show molluscicidal effect and may be sources of useful compounds for the schistosomiasis control.


Estudou-se a ação dos extratos do caule, folhas e frutos de Jatropha gossypiifolia (Pinhão-roxo) sobre Biomphalaria glabrata analisando a sobrevivência, capacidade alimentar e de oviposição. Os extratos foram obtidos pela maceração das partes do vegetal em álcool etílico 92%, evaporados até obter-se um resíduo seco e estudados fitoquimicamente. A atividade moluscicida em B. glabrata seguiu os procedimentos recomendados pela WHO (1965). A medida de quantidade de alimento ingerido e a oviposição foi realizada durante cada experimento. O extrato das folhas de J. gossypiifolia mostrou-se um forte agente moluscicida, promovendo 100% de mortalidade de B. glabrata mesmo na menor concentração testada, 25 ppm. Com o extrato dos frutos houve variação na mortalidade, de acordo com a concentração utilizada (100, 75, 50 e 25 ppm). Os caramujos em contato com o extrato dos frutos apresentaram quando comparado ao controle uma diminuição significativa nos comportamentos alimentares e de número de embriões. O extrato do caule não apresentou atividade moluscicida e nenhuma influência sobre a capacidade alimentar e de oviposição de B. glabrata nas concentrações testadas. Em conclusão, os extratos de folhas e frutos de J. gossypiifolia investigados neste trabalho apresentam efeito moluscicida e possivelmente podem ser fontes de compostos no controle da esquistossomose.

Este estudo realizou-se na cidade de São Luis, Maranhão, com a finalidade de investigar possível relação entre alergia respiratória e elevação sérica de IgE total e IgE específica para fungos isolados de ambientes externos. Métodos: Fizeram parte deste estudo 98 crianças com diagnóstico clínico de asma e/ou rinite alérgica, com idades entre 4 e 12 anos, sendo 65(66,3%) do sexo masculino e 33 (33,7%) do sexo feminino. Quantificaram-se no soro dessas crianças os níveis de IgE total e IgE específica para Aspergillus spp e Penicillium spp, pelo método de ELISA. Resultados: IgE total foi detectada em 95 crianças (96,9%); 73 (74,5%) apresentaram níveis detectáveis de IgE anti-Aspergillus spp e 85 (86,7%) de IgE anti-Penicillium spp. Não houve significância estatística quando foram correlacionados níveis de IgE total, sexo e área de residência das crianças estudadas (p = 0,88). Na correlação entre IgE total e faixa etária verificou-se distribuição não normal dos dados, com destaque à faixa etária de 11 anos, onde os níveis deIgE total foram mais elevados (Teste de Shapiro p < 0,05). Não houve correlação entre IgE anti-Aspergilluse IgE anti-Penicillium com idade, sexo e área de residência. Conclusão: Anticorpos IgE contra os fungos estudados possivelmente fazem parte de uma polissensibilização, já que os fungos estão presentes em todas as áreas e durante todo o ano na cidade de São Luis, Maranhão, Brasil. Serão necessários mais estudos para o entendimento da alergia respiratória por fungos do ar em São Luis, Maranhão...


The present study was carried out in the city of São Luís, capital of the state of Maranhão, northeastern Brazil, with the aim of investigating a possible relationship between respiratory allergies and high serum levels of total IgE and specific IgE for fungi isolated in outdoor environments. Methods: The study included 98 children with a clinical diagnosis of asthma and/or allergic rhinitis, aged 4 to 12 years. Sixty-five (66.3%) were male and 33 (33.7%) female. Total IgE, Aspergillus spp-specific IgE, and Penicillium spp-specific IgE were quantified in the serum of the children using the ELISA method. Results: Total IgE was detected in 95 children (96.9%). Seventy-three (74.5%) showed detectable levels of Aspergillus spp-specific IgE, and 85 (86.7%), of Penicillium spp-specific IgE. There was no significant correlation between total IgE levels, sex, and area of residence among the children assessed (p = 0.88). When assessing the correlation between total IgE levels and age, data were found to have a non-normal distribution, especially in the 11-year old age group, where total IgE levels were higher than in the other ages (Shapiro test, p < 0.05). There was no significant correlation of Aspergillus spp- and Penicillium spp-specific IgE with age, gender, and area of residence. Conclusion: IgE antibodies against the fungi investigated are possibly a part of polysensitization, as these fungi are present in all areas and throughout the year in the city investigated. Further studies are necessary for a better understanding of the role played by fungal sensitization in respiratory allergy in São Luís, Maranhão...
