ABSTRACT

Data have been collected over time, belonging the 2018th and 2019th, from airports owners, from stakeholders, from universities, from the net, and performing under GIS evaluation processes. Most of the collected data are geographic, economic, and financial statements of the different ownerships, maps about the airport and urban planning, and data about carriers and routes. Specifically, the GIS has been useful to the Network Analysis evaluations. The analysis results can be collected and used in the most comprehensive analysis of similar systems. The results summarize data about four different couples of small remote airports in the EU and their specific network systems [1], [2], [3], [4]. Therefore, the ongoing analysis wait to be extended to other similar systems.

ABSTRACT

METHODS: Case description of a 34 year old woman with chronic granulomatous anterior uveitis following implantation of a phakic anterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL). Aqueous humor was processed for bacterial, fungal culture, and PCR analysis. RESULTS: PCR for 16S ribosomal RNA universal primers was positive and Southern-blot for Propionibacterium spp was negative. Panfungal PCR was negative. Growth of a pigmented yellow colony was detected on Lowenstein-Jensen medium. The isolate was subsequently identified as Mycobacterium gordonae. The patient was treated for atypical mycobacteria as well as an intracameral injection of moxifloxacin, with resolution of inflammation and improvement in visual acuity. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first reported case of Mycobacterium gordonae chronic postoperative endophthalmitis, and of chronic endophthalmitis following phakic IOL surgery. PCR and cultures were invaluable in making the diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of ketorolac on biofilm formation of Staphylococcus epidermidis isolated from patients with post-cataract endophthalmitis. METHODS: Forty S. epidermidis strains isolated from postoperative endophthalmitis were used for this study. Biofilms were grown on microtitre plates for 24 h, dyed, and stained with crystal violet. The mean optical density (OD) and the OD ratio (ODr = OD of the treated biofilm/OD of the untreated biofilm) were used for quantification. The biofilms were incubated with 13 mM ketorolac and without ketorolac for controls. RESULTS: The biofilm ODs of the S. epidermidis isolates untreated and treated with ketorolac were significantly different (0.335 ± 0.06 versus 0.158 ± 0.03, respectively; mean ± SD; P < 0.001). Ketorolac reduced S. epidermidis biofilm formation by 47.6 %. CONCLUSIONS: Ketorolac, at a concentration of 13 mM, significantly reduces the formation of biofilm by strains of S. epidermidis that caused endophthalmitis.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To report a case of Propionibacterium acnes endophthalmitis following uncomplicated cataract extraction with bacterial sequestration in a preexisting Molteno's drainage implant. DESIGN: Interventional case report. METHODS: A 7-year-old girl with congenital glaucoma and a preexisting Molteno's drainage implant developed anterior nongranulomatous uveitis 4 months following cataract surgery. P. acnes endophthalmitis was diagnosed by polymerase chain reaction, Southern blot, and electron microscopy. RESULTS: Extraction of the Molteno's implant was required to control the persistent intraocular inflammation and to convert the results of polymerase chain reaction and Southern blot testing of aqueous sample for P. acnes from positive to negative. CONCLUSION: P. acnes may be sequestered in glaucoma implants, potentially requiring implant removal to treat cases of P. acnes endophthalmitis.

ABSTRACT

Oncogenic rearrangements of the anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene, encoding a receptor type tyrosine kinase, are frequently associated with anaplastic large cell lymphomas. Such rearrangements juxtapose the intracellular domain of ALK to 5'-end sequences belonging to different genes and create transforming fusion proteins. To understand how the oncogenic versions of ALK contribute to lymphomagenesis, it is important to analyze the biological effects and the biochemical properties of this receptor under controlled conditions of activation. To this aim, we constructed chimeric receptor molecules in which the extracellular domain of the ALK kinase is replaced by the extracellular, ligand-binding domain of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Upon transfection in NIH 3T3 fibroblasts, the EGFR/ALK chimera was correctly synthesized and transported to the cell surface, where it was fully functional in forming high versus low affinity EGF-binding sites and transducing an EGF-dependent signal intracellularly. Overexpression of the EGFR/ALK chimera in NIH 3T3 was sufficient to induce the malignant phenotype; the appearance of the transformed phenotype was, however, conditionally dependent on the administration of EGF. Moreover, the EGFR/ALK chimera was significantly more active in inducing transformation and DNA synthesis than the wild type EGFR when either was expressed at similar levels in NIH 3T3 cells. Comparative analysis of the biochemical pathways implicated in the transduction of mitogenic signals did not show any increased ability of the EGFR/ALK to phosphorylate PLC-gamma and MAPK compared with the EGFR. On the contrary, EGFR/ALK showed to have a consistently greater effect on phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase activity compared with the EGFR, indicating that this enzyme plays a major role in mediating the mitogenic effects of ALK in NIH 3T3 cells.

ABSTRACT

Desde su primera descripción en 1973 la demostración de Acanthamoeba sp. como causa de queratitis se ha incrementado. De acuerdo a nuestro conocimiento, no se han descripto casos de esta enfermedad en la Argentina. El propósito de esta comunicación es presentar dos pacientes portadores de lentes de contacto que desarrollaron queratitis ulcerada y que en el estudio histopatológico de la córnea obtenida por queratoplastia se demostró quistes de Acanthamoeba sp. El diagnóstico prequirúrgico depende del índice de sospecha del oftalmólogo, para utilizar las técnicas de laboratorio adecuadas. Los resultados del tratamiento médico son controvertidos y la mayoría de los casos requieren una queratoplastia penetrante
