ABSTRACT

Pathogenic, largely truncating variants in the ETS2 repressor factor (ERF) gene, encoding a transcriptional regulator negatively controlling RAS-MAPK signaling, have been associated with syndromic craniosynostosis involving various cranial sutures and Chitayat syndrome, an ultrarare condition with respiratory distress, skeletal anomalies, and facial dysmorphism. Recently, a single patient with craniosynostosis and a phenotype resembling Noonan syndrome (NS), the most common disorder among the RASopathies, was reported to carry a de novo loss-of-function variant in ERF. Here, we clinically profile 26 individuals from 15 unrelated families carrying different germline heterozygous variants in ERF and showing a phenotype reminiscent of NS. The majority of subjects presented with a variable degree of global developmental and/or language delay. Their shared facial features included absolute/relative macrocephaly, high forehead, hypertelorism, palpebral ptosis, wide nasal bridge, and low-set/posteriorly angulated ears. Stature was below the 3rd centile in two-third of the individuals, while no subject showed typical NS cardiac involvement. Notably, craniosynostosis was documented only in three unrelated individuals, while a dolichocephalic aspect of the skull in absence of any other evidence supporting a premature closing of sutures was observed in other 10 subjects. Unilateral Wilms tumor was diagnosed in one individual. Most cases were familial, indicating an overall low impact on fitness. Variants were nonsense and frameshift changes, supporting ERF haploinsufficiency. These findings provide evidence that heterozygous loss-of-function variants in ERF cause a "RASopathy" resembling NS with or without craniosynostosis, and allow a first dissection of the molecular circuits contributing to MAPK signaling pleiotropy.

ABSTRACT

In recent times, circular economy initiatives in addition to the need for sustainable biomaterials have brought about several attempts at the eco-friendly, eco-sustainable and cost-effective production of asphalt pavements. It is an increasingly common practice in the asphalt industry to improve road pavement performance using additives to enhance the physico-chemical properties of bitumen, which performs the role of the binder in the asphalt mix. This paper evaluated the potential of a bio-based additive derived from olive leaf residue as a modifier and antioxidant agent for bitumen. Samples of neat, aged and doped aged bitumen were analyzed. In this study, the two bio-based additives were characterized in terms of phenol, chlorophyll, lignin and cellulose content, which was correlated with the mechanical properties of the tested samples. The mechanical properties of the neat, modified, aged and unaged samples were evaluated via Dynamic Shear Rheology. The bio-based additives proved to be promising and can improve the properties of bitumen binder and the performance of asphalt pavements in general.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to evaluate the percutaneous permeation profiles of caffeic acid (CA) from the cubic and hexagonal liquid crystalline phases of Pluronic P123/water mixtures. METHOD: The resulting drug-loaded mesophases were subjected to characterisation through deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and polarised optical microscopy observations. These analyses aimed to evaluate the structural changes that occurred in the mesophases loading with CA. Additionally, steady and dynamic rheology studies were conducted to further explore their mechanical properties and correlate them to the supramolecular structure. Finally, CA release experiments were carried out at two different temperatures to examine the behaviour of the structured systems in a physiological or hyperthermic state. RESULTS: As the concentration of the polymer increases, an increase in the viscosity of the gel is noted; however, the addition of caffeic acid increases microstructure fluidity. It is observed that the temperature effect conforms to expectations. The increase in temperature causes a decrease in viscosity and, consequently, an increase in the rate of permeation of caffeic acid. CONCLUSIONS: The CA permeation profile from the prepared formulations is mostly dependent on the structural organisation and temperature. Cubic mesophase LLC 30/CA showed greater skin permeation with good accumulation in the skin at both tested temperatures.

ABSTRACT

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes are technologies used in the oil and gas industry to maximize the extraction of residual oil from reservoirs after primary and secondary recovery methods have been carried out. The injection into the reservoir of surface-active substances capable of reducing the surface tension between oil and the rock surface should favor its extraction with significant economic repercussions. However, the most commonly used surfactants in EOR are derived from petroleum, and their use can have negative environmental impacts, such as toxicity and persistence in the environment. Biosurfactants on the other hand, are derived from renewable resources and are biodegradable, making them potentially more sustainable and environmentally friendly. The present review intends to offer an updated overview of the most significant results available in scientific literature on the potential application of biosurfactants in the context of EOR processes. Aspects such as production strategies, techniques for characterizing the mechanisms of action and the pros and cons of the application of biosurfactants as a principal method for EOR will be illustrated and discussed in detail. Optimized concepts such as the HLD in biosurfactant choice and design for EOR are also discussed. The scientific findings that are illustrated and reviewed in this paper show why general emphasis needs to be placed on the development and adoption of biosurfactants in EOR as a substantial contribution to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly oil and gas industry.

ABSTRACT

In this work, the peels of red and blonde oranges as well as lemons were efficiently (5.75-9.65% yield) extracted by hydroalcoholic solution with ultrasound assistance and employed as active molecule sources in the preparation of functional gummies. Antioxidant performances of the hydroalcoholic extracts were characterized by colorimetric assays, whereas LC-HRMS analyses identified the main bioactive compounds (phenolic acids and flavonoids). The highest scavenging activity was recorded for lemon extract in an aqueous environment (IC50 = 0.081 mg mL-1). An ecofriendly grafting procedure was performed to anchor polyphenols to gelatin chains, providing macromolecular systems characterized by thermal analysis and antioxidant properties. Scavenger abilities (IC50 = 0.201-0.454 mg mL-1) allowed the employment of the conjugates as functional ingredients in the preparation of gummies with remarkable antioxidant and rheological properties over time (14 days). These findings confirmed the possible employment of highly polluting wastes as valuable sources of bioactive compounds for functional gummies preparation.

ABSTRACT

Improving the mechanical properties of bitumen is an important goal for road pavements design. For this reason, new compounds are now being sought for testing as bitumen modifiers. In this work, the authors studied the effect that two different chars have on two 50/70 bitumens with different chemical and physical characteristics. A complete morphological, surface and bulk characterization of the two additives was carried out. In addition, rheology, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) relaxometry and atomic force microscopy were used to analyze the effect that the two additives exert on the properties of the bitumens. According to the results, the char sample with high porosity could be used as a modifier of mechanical properties, while no rejuvenation effects were observed for either of the two additives tested. In addition, the two additives do not give rise to segregation phenomena.

ABSTRACT

This work investigates the relationship between the structure and physicochemical properties of three different starches in starch/polyvinyl alcohol aqueous solutions. For this purpose, accurate nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses were performed to determine the role that the starch structure plays in the formation of binder solutions. Moreover, a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) was used to investigate the mechanical properties of the solutions and correlate them with the structure of each starch. Complete characterization of the analysed starches and the starch/PVOH solutions was also carried out through light scattering measurements. Furthermore, by crossing the data coming from NMR and light scattering with those coming from rheology, the best solution was identified. Finally, to confirm the interaction mechanism between starch and PVOH, thermogravimetric analysis and an NMR study, using 1H and 13C NMR spectra, were carried out on the film obtained from the best solution. The analyses carried out showed that PVOH has a stabilizing effect on starch/PVOH solutions, and the starch with the greatest branching degree is the one that forms a more structured network.

In this investigation the dynamics of two types of bitumens with different penetration grade were tested by using dynamic shear rheometry (DSR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) at unaged conditions, and upon both short- and long-term artificial aging. The gel-sol transition temperature T g e l → s o l * ${{T}_{gel\to sol}^{^{\ast}}}$ was found to increase with increasing the time of aging treatment. Arrhenius parameters of the viscosity were found, unexpectedly, to be correlated with those of simple liquids, suggesting that the two kinds of systems, although chemically and physically quite different, share the same basic process at the molecular level. The molecular dynamics has been then investigated by NMR Pulsed Field Gradient Stimulated-Echo (PFGSE) and relaxometry (Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill, CPMG, spin-echo pulse sequence) to capture the effect of aging upon dynamics variables such as self-diffusion coefficients D and transverse relaxation times T2 . The translational diffusion at T> T g e l → s o l * ${{T}_{gel\to sol}^{^{\ast}}}$ of the light molecular components of both types of bitumens was characterized by broad distributions of D which were found independent of the experimental time scale up to 0.2 s. Similarly, T2 data could be described as a continuous unimodal distributions of relaxation times determined both at T< T g e l → s o l * ${{T}_{gel\to sol}^{^{\ast}}}$ and T> T g e l → s o l * ${{T}_{gel\to sol}^{^{\ast}}}$ .

Background: RASopathies are developmental disorders caused by dysregulation of the RAS-MAPK signalling pathway, which contributes to the modulation of multiple extracellular signals, including hormones and growth factors regulating energetic metabolism, including lipid synthesis, storage, and degradation. Subjects and methods: We evaluated the body composition and lipid profiles of a single-centre cohort of 93 patients with a molecularly confirmed diagnosis of RASopathy by assessing height, BMI, and total cholesterol, HDL, triglycerides, apolipoprotein, fasting glucose, and insulin levels, in the context of a cross sectional and longitudinal study. We specifically investigated and compared anthropometric and haematochemistry data between the Noonan syndrome (NS) and Mazzanti syndrome (NS/LAH) groups. Results: At the first evaluation (9.5 ± 6.2 years), reduced growth (-1.80 ± 1.07 DS) was associated with a slightly reduced BMI (-0.34 DS ± 1.15 DS). Lipid profiling documented low total cholesterol levels (< 5th percentile) in 42.2% of the NS group; in particular, in 48.9% of PTPN11 patients and in 28.6% of NS/LAH patients compared to the general population, with a significant difference between males and females. A high proportion of patients had HDL levels lower than the 26th percentile, when compared to the age- and sex-matched general population. Triglycerides showed an increasing trend with age only in NS females. Genotype-phenotype correlations were also evident, with particularly reduced total cholesterol in about 50% of patients with PTPN11 mutations with LDL-C and HDL-C tending to decrease during puberty. Similarly, apolipoprotein A1 and apolipoprotein B deficits were documented, with differences in prevalence associated with the genotype for apolipoprotein A1. Fasting glucose levels and HOMA-IR were within the normal range. Conclusion: The present findings document an unfavourable lipid profile in subjects with NS, in particular PTPN11 mutated patients, and NS/LAH. Further studies are required to delineate the dysregulation of lipid metabolism in RASopathies more systematically and confirm the occurrence of previously unappreciated genotype-phenotype correlations involving the metabolic profile of these disorders.

ABSTRACT

The conjugation of polyphenols is a valuable strategy with which to confer tailored properties to polymeric materials of biomedical interest. Within this investigation, we aim to explore the possibility to use this synthetic approach to increase the viscosity of conjugates, thus allowing the release of a loaded therapeutic to be better controlled over time than in neat polyphenols. Curcumin (CUR) was conjugated to sodium alginate (CA) and chitosan (CS) with functionalisation degrees of 9.2 (SA-CUR) and 15.4 (CS-CUR) mg g-1. Calorimetric analyses showed higher degrees of chain rigidity upon conjugation, with a shift of the degradation peaks to higher temperatures (from 239 to 245 °C and from 296 to 303 °C for SA-CUR and CS-CUR, respectively). Rheological analyses were used to prove the enhanced interconnection between the polymer chains in the conjugates, confirmed by the weak gel parameters, A and z. Moreover, the typical non-Newtonian behaviour of the high-molecular-weight polysaccharides was recorded, together with an enhancement of the activation energy, Ea, in CS-CUR vs. CS (opposite behaviour recorded for SA-CUR vs. SA). The evaluation of the delivery performance (of Doxorubicin as a model drug) showed sustained release profiles, opening opportunities for the development of controlled delivery systems.

INTRODUCTION: Marfan syndrome (MFS) is the most common inherited connective tissue disorder and its association with intracranial aneurysms (ICAs) has been debated for more than two decades. Here, we report the prevalence of ICAs at screening neuroimaging in a population of genetically confirmed MFS patients and present the results of a meta-analysis including our cohort of patients and those of previous studies. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We enrolled 100 consecutive MFS patients, who underwent screening with brain magnetic resonance angiography at our tertiary center between August 2018 and May 2022. We did a PubMed and Web of Science search to retrieve all studies on the prevalence of ICAs in patients with MFS published before November, 2022. RESULTS: Of the 100 patients included in this study (94% Caucasians, 40% females, mean age 38.6 ± 14.6 years), three had an ICA. We pooled the current study with five previously published studies, including a total of 465 patients, 43 of which harbored at least one unruptured ICA, leading to an overall ICA prevalence of 8.9% (95% CI 5.8%-13.3%). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: In our cohort of genetically confirmed MFS patients, the prevalence of ICAs was 3%, which is substantially lower compared to previous studies based on neuroimaging. The high frequency of ICA found in previous studies could be explained by selection bias and lack of genetic testing, which may have led to the inclusion of patients with different connective tissue disorders. Further studies, including several centers and a large number of patients with genetically confirmed MFS, are needed to confirm our results.

ABSTRACT

Background: Because CHARGE syndrome is characterized by high clinical variability, molecular confirmation of the clinical diagnosis is of pivotal importance. Most patients have a pathogenic variant in the CHD7 gene; however, variants are distributed throughout the gene and most cases are due to de novo mutations. Often, assessing the pathogenetic effect of a variant can be challenging, requiring the design of a unique assay for each specific case. Method: Here we describe a new CHD7 intronic variant, c.5607+17A>G, identified in two unrelated patients. In order to characterize the molecular effect of the variant, minigenes were constructed using exon trapping vectors. Results: The experimental approach pinpoints the pathogenetic effect of the variant on CHD7 gene splicing, subsequently confirmed using cDNA synthetized from RNA extracted from patient lymphocytes. Our results were further corroborated by the introduction of other substitutions at the same nucleotide position, showing that c.5607+17A>G specifically alters splicing possibly due to the generation of a recognition motif for the recruitment of a splicing effector. Conclusion: Here we identify a novel pathogenetic variant affecting splicing, and we provide a detailed molecular characterization and possible functional explanation.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, the food industry has become increasingly involved in researching vegetable fats and oils with appropriate mechanical properties (ease of transport, processing, and storage) and a specific lipidic composition to ensure healthy products for consumers. The chemical-physical behavior of these matrices depends on their composition in terms of single fatty acids (FA). However, as we demonstrate in this work, these properties, as well as the absorption, digestion and uptake in humans of specific FAs, are also largely determined by their regiosomerism within the TriAcylGlycerols (TAG) moieties (sn-1,2,3 positions). The goal of this work is to study for the first time vegetable fats obtained directly from a sample of natural cocoa butter (CB) through a process that manipulates the distribution of FAs but not their nature. Even if the initial percentage of each FA in the mixture remains the same, CB derivatives seem to show improved chemical-physical features. In order to understand which factors account for their physical and chemical characteristics, and to check whether or not the obtained new matrices could be considered as valid alternatives to other vegetable fats (e.g., palm oil (PO)), we carried out an experimental investigation at both the macroscopic and molecular level including: (i) Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analyses to examine thermal features; (ii) rheological testing to explore mechanical properties; (iii) powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) to evaluate the solid-state phases of the obtained fats; and (iv) 1H and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR, 1D and 2D) spectroscopy to rapidly analyze fatty acid composition including regioisomeric distribution on the glycerol backbone. These last results open up the possibility of using NMR spectroscopy as an alternative to the chromatographic techniques routinely employed for the investigation of similar matrices.

OBJECTIVES: Lower limb deformities in children need careful orthopedic evaluation to distinguish physiological forms from pathological ones. X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is a rare hereditary condition caused by PHEX gene mutations where tibial varum can be the first sign. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a family presenting with severe tibial varum, harbouring a rare PHEX intron mutation, c.1586+6T>C. This is the first clinical description available in literature for this variant. Despite the previous prediction of a mild phenotype in functional study, our patients showed important bone deformities, rickets and impaired growth since infancy followed by severe bone pain, hearing loss and reduced life quality in adulthood. Burosumab therapy improved biochemical and radiological findings in children and ameliorated quality of life in adults. CONCLUSIONS: This case demonstrated c.1586+6T>C causes a severe XLH phenotype, responsive to Burosumab. Familial genetic screening, enlarged to intronic region analysis, when XLH is suspected, allows precocious diagnosis to start timely the appropriate treatment.

ABSTRACT

Refuse-Derived Fuels (RDFs) are segregated forms of wastes obtained by a combined mechanical-biological processing of municipal solid wastes (MSWs). The narrower characteristics, e.g., high calorific value (18-24 MJ/kg), low moisture content (3-6%) and high volatile (77-84%) and carbon (47-56%) contents, make RDFs more suitable than MSWs for thermochemical valorization purposes. As a matter of fact, EU regulations encourage the use of RDF as a source of energy in the frameworks of sustainability and the circular economy. Pyrolysis and gasification are promising thermochemical processes for RDF treatment, since, compared to incineration, they ensure an increase in energy recovery efficiency, a reduction of pollutant emissions and the production of value-added products as chemical platforms or fuels. Despite the growing interest towards RDFs as feedstock, the literature on the thermochemical treatment of RDFs under pyrolysis and gasification conditions still appears to be limited. In this work, results on pyrolysis and gasification tests on a real RDF are reported and coupled with a detailed characterization of the gaseous, condensable and solid products. Pyrolysis tests have been performed in a tubular reactor up to three different final temperatures (550, 650 and 750 °C) while an air gasification test at 850 °C has been performed in a fluidized bed reactor using sand as the bed material. The results of the two thermochemical processes are analyzed in terms of yield, characteristics and quality of the products to highlight how the two thermochemical conversion processes can be used to accomplish waste-to-materials and waste-to-energy targets. The RDF gasification process leads to the production of a syngas with a H2/CO ratio of 0.51 and a tar concentration of 3.15 g/m3.

ABSTRACT

The carbon footprint reduction mandate and other eco-friendly policies currently in place are constantly driving the trend of the synthesis and application of sustainable functional materials. The bitumen industry is not an exception to this trend and, every day, new technologies that facilitate safer, cost effective and more sustainable industrial processes and road paving operations are being researched and brought to light. A lot of research is currently ongoing to improve bitumen's properties due to its use as a binder in road paving processes. Over the years, the most common method to improve bitumen's properties has been with the use of additives. The major drawback in the use of these additives is the fact that they are substances of strong chemical nature which are either too acidic, too basic or emit toxic fumes and volatile organic compounds into the environment. In the long run, these chemicals are also toxic to the road pavement personnel that carry out the day to day industrial and paving operations. This led researchers to the initiative of synthesizing and applying biomaterials to be used as additives for bitumen. In this light, several studies have investigated the use of substances such as bio-oils, natural waxes, gum, polysaccharides and natural rubber. This literature review is aimed at classifying the different bio-based materials used to improve bitumen's properties and to provide a deeper knowledge of the application of these biomaterials in bitumen technology. In general, we highlight how the research efforts elaborated herein could potentially foster safer, sustainable, eco-friendly approaches to improving bitumen's properties while also promoting a circular economy.

ABSTRACT

Cannabis sativa is a herbaceous multiple-use species commonly employed to produce fiber, oil, and medicine. It is now becoming popular for the high nutritional properties of its seed oil and for the pharmacological activity of its cannabinoid fraction in inflorescences. The present study aims to apply nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to provide useful qualitative and quantitative information on the chemical composition of seed and flower Cannabis extracts obtained by ultra-sound-assisted extraction, and to evaluate NMR as an alternative to the official procedure for the quantification of cannabinoids. The estimation of the optimal ω-6/ω-3 ratio from the 1H NMR spectrum for the seed extracts of the Futura 75 variety and the quantitative results from the 1H and 13C NMR spectra for the inflorescence extracts of the Tiborszallasi and Kompolti varieties demonstrate that NMR technology represents a good alternative to classical chromatography, supplying sufficiently precise, sensitive, rapid, and informative data without any sample pre-treatment. In addition, different extraction procedures were tested and evaluated to compare the elaboration of spectral data with the principal component analysis (PCA) statistical method and the quantitative NMR results: the extracts obtained with higher polarity solvents (acetone or ethanol) were poor in psychotropic agents (THC < LOD) but had an appreciable percentage of both cannabinoids and triacylgliceroles (TAGs). ABSTRACT

This paper considers the effect of aging processes on viscoelastic characteristics of vacuum residue oxidation products modified with crumb rubber. Viscoelastic properties were compared to original bitumen raw material-vacuum residue and vacuum residue oxidation products during short-term and long-term aging. The complex shear modulus of the vacuum residue and its oxidation products decreased with an increase in temperature. Short-term aging resulted in increased shear modulus for all samples.The vacuum residue oxidation product modified with crumb rubber had the maximum values of the rutting parameter and fatigue parameter. There was an expansion of the temperature range of plasticity: for the vacuum residue oxidation product with crumb rubber, its value was 67.2 °C. The curves of the black diagram of the modified vacuum residue oxidation product are shifted towards smaller phase angles with the increase in the shear modulus, which indicates the increase in the stiffness and elasticity of the rubber bitumen binders. The vacuum residue oxidation product modified with crumb rubber corresponded to the rubber bitumen binder of the grade RBB 60/90, according to its physical and mechanical indicators.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To describe a cohort of patients with arrhythmogenic left ventricular cardiomyopathy (ALVC), focusing on the spectrum of the clinical presentations. METHODS: Patients were retrospectively evaluated between January 2012 and June 2020. Diagnosis was based on (1) ≥3 contiguous segments with subepicardial/midwall late gadolinium enhancement in the left ventricle (LV) at cardiac magnetic resonance plus a likely pathogenic/pathogenic arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (AC) associated genetic mutation and/or familial history of AC and/or red flags for ALVC (ie, negative T waves in V4-6/aVL, low voltages in limb leads, right bundle branch block like ventricular tachycardia) or (2) pathology examination of explanted hearts or autoptic cases suffering sudden cardiac death (SCD). Significant right ventricular involvement was an exclusion criterion. RESULTS: Fifty-two patients (63% males, age 45 years (31-53)) composed the study cohort. Twenty-one (41%) had normal echocardiogram, 13 (25%) a hypokinetic non-dilated cardiomyopathy (HNDC) and 17 (33%) a dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Of 47 tested patients, 29 (62%) were carriers of a pathogenic/likely pathogenic DNA variant. Clinical contexts leading to diagnosis were SCD in 3 (6%), ventricular arrhythmias in 15 (29%), chest pain in 8 (15%), heart failure in 6 (12%) and familial screening in 20 (38%). Thirty patients (57%) had previously received a diagnosis other than ALVC with a diagnostic delay of 6 years (IQR 1-7). CONCLUSIONS: ALVC is hidden in different clinical scenarios with a phenotypic spectrum ranging from normal LV to HNDC and DCM. Ventricular arrhythmias, chest pain, heart failure and SCD are the main clinical presentations, being familial screening essential for the affected relatives' identification.

BACKGROUND: The multidisciplinary network of Emilia-Romagna for the study of juvenile sudden cardiac death (SCD) was started in Bologna in June 2018 in order to: (1) define the spectrum of etiologies and mechanisms of SCD in young people; (ii) standardize diagnostic terminology and categories; (iii) identify potentially hereditary genetic heart diseases and define the contribution of post-mortem genetic analysis (so-called molecular autopsy) to the overall diagnostic process; (iv) identify preclinical forms of the pathologies in the first-degree relatives of the deceased subject using both phenotypic and genotypic evaluation and, where possible, undertake therapeutic/prophylactic measures (primary prevention). METHODS: In the first 2 years of activity (01/06/2018-27/08/2020) 50 cases of SCD came to the attention of the Cardiovascular Pathology Unit of the S. Orsola-Malpighi Polyclinic in Bologna, from Centres of Forensic Medicine and Pathological Anatomy in most of the region. RESULTS: Sixty-two percent of cases were sent by forensic pathologists, 36% by clinical pathologists and 2% by the family of the deceased. Medico-legal cases were prompted by autopsies requested by the Judicial Authority in 70% of cases; 55.5% of patients referred by pathologists came from the Cardiovascular Tissue Bank, as part of the regional program for the quality and safety control of organs and tissues from multiorgan-multitissue donors. The average age of the subjects was 35 ± 13.6 years (70% male, range: 1-55 years; median: 38 years). The spectrum of the final diagnoses includes: structurally normal hearts 14%, cardiomyopathies 40%, coronary heart disease 23%, Brugada syndrome 6%, aortic dissection 4%, substance abuse 6%, valvular heart disease 2%, mixed causes 2%. CONCLUSIONS: The network is necessarily centered on post-mortem pathological activities, but it does not end with these. If in 60% of cases the pathological autopsy examination was decisive in identifying the cause of death, in the other cases a detailed final diagnosis was reached only with more complex pathways involving molecular genetics, clinical genetics, and toxicology.
