ABSTRACT

The interaction between matter and microwaves assumes critical significance due to the ubiquity of wireless communication technology. The selective shielding of microwaves represents the only way to achieve the control on crucial technological sectors. The implementation of microwave shielding ensures the proper functioning of electronic devices. By preventing electromagnetic pollution, shielding safeguards the integrity and optimal performances of devices, contributing to the reliability and efficiency of technological systems in various sectors and allowing the further step forwards in a safe and secure society. Nevertheless, the microwave shielding research is vast and can be quite hard to approach due to the large number and variety of studies regarding both theory and experiments. In this review, we focused our attention on the comprehensive discussion of the current state of the art of materials used for the production of electromagnetic interference shielding composites, with the aim of providing a solid reference point to explore this research field.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, low-cost carbons derived from recycled materials have been gaining attention for their potentials as filler in composites and in other applications. The electrical and mechanical properties of polymer composites can be tuned using different percentages and different kind of fillers: either low-cost (e.g., carbon black), ecofriendly (e.g., biochar), or sophisticated (e.g., carbon nanotubes). In this work, the mechanical and electrical behavior of composites with biochar and multiwall carbon nanotubes dispersed in epoxy resin are compared. Superior mechanical properties (ultimate tensile strength, strain at break) were noticed at low heat-treated biochar (concentrations 2⁻4 wt %). Furthermore, dielectric properties in the microwave range comparable to low carbon nanotubes loadings can be achieved by employing larger but manageable amounts of biochar (20 wt %), rending the production of composites for structural and functional application cost-effective.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggested a role for hypocretins in the neurobiology of Major Mood Disorders (MMD). The purpose of this study was to investigate hypocretin involvement in MMD evaluating whether particular alleles or genotypes of the hypocretin pathway genes (HCRT, HCRTR1 and HCRTR2) would modify the occurrence and clinical features of the disease. METHODS: We selected for the study 229 MMD patients and 259 healthy age-, sex- and ethnicity-matched controls. Cases and controls were genotyped for several single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the HCRT, HCRTR1, and HCRTR2 genes. RESULTS: We found that allelic and genotypic frequencies of the rs2271933 G>A polymorphism (Ile408Val) in the HCRTR1 gene were significantly different between cases and controls (p=0.003 and p=0.0004, respectively). The carriage of the A allele was associated with a significantly increased disease risk (OR:1.60, 95% C.I. 1.22-2.10). In addition, we found a significant association between HCRTR1 haplotypes and the disease (permutation p<0.0001). In the analysis of subgroups we confirmed the association only in patients with unipolar depression. LIMITATIONS: Our sample was relatively small and included only cases and controls recruited from Northern Italy. Analysis of the disease subgroups warrants reexamination with more subjects. Finally, the effects of the rs2271933 G>A polymorphism on the hypocretin-1 receptor function are unknown. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that the HCRTR1 gene or a linked locus may modulate the risk for Major Mood Disorders and supports recent studies suggesting an involvement of hypocretin neurotransmitter system in affective disorders.

ABSTRACT

The effect of amitriptyline on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis activity was compared with that of fluvoxamine in 38 patients suffering from DMS-IV major depressive disorder. Basal plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol levels were determined in the so-called "observation window" of an hour (08:00-09:00 h), and cortisol levels were determined again at 20:00 h. Clinical and biochemical assessments were performed before therapy (T0), at day 14 (T14), and at day 42 (T42) of the course of antidepressant treatment. At T0, neuroendocrine parameters did not differ in patients from those in controls, except for the ratio between cortisol levels at 20:00 h and the mean level of the "window" (ratio F20/F8), which was significantly higher, suggesting a dysregulation of the circadian pattern of cortisol. Although a decrease in the ratio F20/F8 was already apparent at T14 of both treatments, the repeated measures analysis of variance failed to demonstrate a significant variation with time (T0, T14, and T42) and with treatment (amitriptyline and fluvoxamine) for any hormonal measure. At T42, both treated groups showed a similar level of clinical improvement. Our results did not demonstrate any effect of antidepressant therapy on the cortisol circadian rhythm abnormality.
