ABSTRACT

Pelibuey sheep is the main breed in the tropical and subtropical regions of Mexico, and high demand of sheep meat has favored the finishing of lambs in feedlots with diets containing high levels of grains. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of exogenous enzymes (EE) and application method on nutrient intake and digestibility and performance of growing Pelibuey lambs. Treatments were based on comparison of two different methods of adding an enzyme product (sprayed on the total mixed ration or applied orally to the lambs) versus control treatment (no added enzyme). Twenty-one Pelibuey lambs, weighing 15.7 kg (SD = 1.8 kg) initial body weight, were individually housed in shaded pens and assigned randomly to one of the three enzyme treatments. At the end of study (lasting for 45 days), three lambs from each treatment were randomly selected and adapted to a pants and harness designed for fecal collection to measure nutrient digestibilities. Total body gain and average daily gain were affected (P < 0.05) by supplemental EE. The application method of EE had significant (P < 0.05) effect on FCE and FCR, but no effects were observed on nutrient intake. Supplemental EE did improve (P < 0.05) the digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter, neutral and acid detergent fiber, but no differences were observed in crude protein digestibility. The application method of EE had significant (P < 0.05) effect on the digestibility of acid detergent fiber. Supplemental EE can improve body weight gain and nutrient digestibilities without affecting nutrient intake in Pelibuey lambs, but the results of feed conversion efficiency and acid detergent fiber digestibility depend on the application method used of the EE.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the influence of the addition of DL - Metionina in guinea-pigs's nuthtion and the productive behavior of the balanced portions of food in the guinea pigs' nutrition (Cavia porcellus) for which it was used 32 rodents between males and females Improved, the growth was evaluated during the six first weeks with concéntrate food and the addition of DL. Metionina with 0,22 and chalk and alfalfa, with 16 per cent of protein, with two portions: one with metionina and other without it. Past the six weeks the guinea pigs had weights of 756,25 g, in females and 780 g. in males, the aftermaths show statistical differences not very relevant, with the results in the growth of guinea pigs the cost was determined and profitability was calculated. The Guinea-pigs's commercial value is SI. 10,00 nuevos soles, the final weight determines the weight's increase to 377,5 g. andit's caught the best relation cost/ profit with 23,8 per cent the best profit and the best profitability when metionina is used.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of dental caries and periodontal disease in type-2 diabetic patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study. A survey with sociodemographic, clinical and nutritional variables was applied to diabetic patients who met the criteria of selection. The rates of dental caries, periodontal disease (Russell's) and oral hygiene were applied through oral examination. Statistical univaried and bivaried analysis was made. RESULTS: 100 diabetics with an average age of 49 +/- 8 years old were interviewed, the proportion between women and men was of 1.9:1; 85% of the interviewed people had a couple; 56% were housewives and 74% belonged to a low socioeconomic level. The average of metabolic control was of 182 +/- 102; 31% of the diabetics had three years or more of evolution of the disease; 99% brushed their teeth daily, but only 31% did it three times a day; in 85 % the brushing technique was inadequate. The rate of oral hygiene was 3.2 +/- 1; of dental caries was 0.52 +/- .13, and of Russell's periodontal disease was 2.77 +/- 1.1. Gender made no difference at all in the rates. CONCLUSIONS: The rate of dental caries was similar to the reported by other studies, but the rate of Russell's periodontal disease was greater to the one provided by literature, which shows that education in dental hygiene must be redefined.
