ABSTRACT

In 2014 a National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death report examined the care of people requiring lower limb amputation as a consequence of complications associated with vascular disease or diabetes. It suggests that less than half of patients who undergo surgery receive good care. This article summarises the key findings of the report and the implications for nursing practice.

ABSTRACT

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is serious but its significance has only recently been reflected in NICE guidance. A trust launched a PAD service led by nurses and podiatrists. The service is cost-effective and ensures that most patients receive treatment in the community, with referrals made to secondary care as appropriate. A care pathway standardises care.

ABSTRACT

An ankle brachial pressure index (ABPI) is a simple non-invasive method of identifying arterial insufficiency within a limb. It compares the ankle and brachial systolic blood pressures. An important factor determining the rate of healing of any wound is adequate arterial blood supply. In the management of leg ulcers, the ABPI forms a fundamental part of the assessment.
