ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) events have rarely been reported in gymnosperms. Gnetum is a gymnosperm genus comprising 25‒35 species sympatric with angiosperms in West African, South American, and Southeast Asian rainforests. Only a single acquisition of an angiosperm mitochondrial intron has been documented to date in Asian Gnetum mitogenomes. We wanted to develop a more comprehensive understanding of frequency and fragment length distribution of such events as well as their evolutionary history in this genus. RESULTS: We sequenced and assembled mitogenomes from five Asian Gnetum species. These genomes vary remarkably in size and foreign DNA content. We identified 15 mitochondrion-derived and five plastid-derived (MTPT) foreign genes. Our phylogenetic analyses strongly indicate that these foreign genes were transferred from diverse eudicots-mostly from the Rubiaceae genus Coptosapelta and ten genera of Malpighiales. This indicates that Asian Gnetum has experienced multiple independent HGT events. Patterns of sequence evolution strongly suggest DNA-mediated transfer between mitochondria as the primary mechanism giving rise to these HGT events. Most Asian Gnetum species are lianas and often entwined with sympatric angiosperms. We therefore propose that close apposition of Gnetum and angiosperm stems presents opportunities for interspecific cell-to-cell contact through friction and wounding, leading to HGT. CONCLUSIONS: Our study reveals that multiple HGT events have resulted in massive amounts of angiosperm mitochondrial DNA integrated into Asian Gnetum mitogenomes. Gnetum and its neighboring angiosperms are often entwined with each other, possibly accounting for frequent HGT between these two phylogenetically remote lineages.

ABSTRACT

The effect on acetabular management in developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) patients aged 7 or older with modified low Dega osteotomy procedure was evaluated. Patients between 7 and 14 years old were managed with modified low Dega osteotomy and open reduction and concomitant procedures to evaluate whether low level osteotomy improved the clinical and radiologic outcomes after treatment. Clinical status was assessed using the modified McKay's criteria; radiologic evaluations were assessed for the modified Severin classification, the mean acetabular index (AI), Sharp angle and center-edge (CE) angle. And occurrence of triradiate cartilage injury and complications was recorded. Forty-two DDH patients (57 hips) between 7 and 14 years old were managed with modified low Dega osteotomy. The results demonstrated the latest follow-up 43 hips (75.4%) were rated excellent and 10 hips (17.5%) rated good according to the modified McKay criteria and 41 hips (71.9%) were rated excellent and 11 hips (19.3%) rated good according to Modified Severin classification, respectively. The mean Hip Score improved from 69.53 ±â€…7.14 before the operation to 93.17 ±â€…8.43 at the final follow-up. The mean AI changed from 31.9° to 20.2°, mean Sharp angle decreased from 59.3° to 38.8° and mean CE angle increased from -10.9° to 35.2°, preoperatively and at latest follow-up, respectively. The modified low Dega osteotomy combined with open reduction and concomitant procedures were found to be adequate in improving instant and sustained clinical and radiographic outcomes for the late detected pediatric walking DDH patients.

ABSTRACT

Hedyotislongiramulissp. nov. (Rubiaceae) is described from Guangdong Province, China. It is similar to H.caudatifolia but differs in having puberulent, more or less tetragonal and decussately sulcate juvenile stems, waxy leaf surface, short inflorescence peduncles, high length ratio of corolla lobe to tube, and subglobose capsules. The phylogenetic analysis reveals that H.longiramulis is sister to H.pubirachis. Dimorphism concerning pollen size was observed in the heterostylous flowers. The complete chloroplast genome of the new species comprises a typical quadripartite structure of 153,616 bp in length, with two inverted repeats of 25,457 bp, a large single-copy of 85,050 bp and a small single-copy of 17,652 bp. It contains 112 unique genes, including 79 protein-coding genes, 29 tRNA genes, and four rRNA genes, the GC content of the chloroplast genome is 32.4%. The new species is provisionally evaluated as "Least Concern" because it is common and well-protected in two Provincial Nature Reserves.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to explore the pressure sensitivity of the external ear that can be the basis for adapting the pressure distribution on the concha for in-ear earphone design. Overall, 30 participants were included in this study, where an electronic mechanical algometer with a stepping motor was used to apply constant pressure. Before the experiment, the customised concha shell models of the participants were positioned in the ear perpendicular to the concha surface. Furthermore, the pressure discomfort threshold (PDT), moderate pressure discomfort (MPD), and maximum pressure threshold (MPT) in eight regions of the ear were recorded. This study's results indicate that the four regions of the external ear are less sensitive to pressure than those of the other regions. Additionally, women had higher pressure sensitivity values in the external ear. Therefore, this study's findings could have important implications for earphone designs and evaluating discomfort conditions in the external ear. Practitioner summary: This study explores the pressure sensitivity threshold (PDT, MPD, and MPT) on the external ear and the relevant implications for in-ear earphone design. Interestingly, regions closer to the bone structure were less sensitive to pressure, and men could tolerate greater pressure on the external ear than women.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the influence of sleep fragmentation in infancy and toddler period on emotional and behavioral problems at the age of 6 years. Methods: Using a prospective cohort design, 262 children were extracted from mother-child birth cohort recruited from May 2012 to July 2013 in Renji Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Children's sleep and physical activities were assessed using actigraphy at 6, 12, 18, 24, and 36 months of age, from which the sleep fragmentation index (FI) at each follow-up point was calculated. Children's emotional and behavioral problems at 6 years of age were assessed using the strengths and difficulties questionnaire. Group-based trajectory model was applied to determine sleep FI in infancy and toddler period trajectory groups with Bayesian information criteria being used to determine the best fitting model. Children's emotional and behavioral problems between groups were examined with independent t test and linear regression models, etc. Results: A total of 177 children, with 91 boys and 86 girls, were included in the final analysis and were divided into 2 groups: high FI group (n=30) and low FI group (n=147). Compared with children in the low FI group, those in the high FI group presents with higher total difficulties score and higher hyperactivity or inattention score ((11.0±4.9) vs. (8.9±4.1), (4.9±2.7) vs. (3.7±2.3) scores, t=2.17, 2.23, both P<0.05, respectively), with the differences remaining significant after adjusting for covariates (t=2.08, 2.09, both P<0.05 respectively). Conclusion: High sleep fragmentation in infancy and toddler period is associated with more emotional and behavioral problems, especially hyperactivity or inattention problems, at 6 years of age.

ABSTRACT

The anti-melanogenic activity of 259 actinomycete strains was tested, and based on the results for the inhibition of mushroom tyrosinase activity and the reduction in melanin content, Micromonospora sp. JCS1 and JCS7 were selected as the strains with the highest anti-melanogenic potential. The activity-guided fractionation of extracts from JCS1 and JCS7 led to the isolation of the dipeptides cyclo(L-Phenyl alanine (Phe)-L-Proline (Pro)) (1) and cyclo(L-Tryptophan (Trp)-L-Proline (Pro)) (2). These two compounds were tested for their inhibition of mushroom tyrosinase by monitoring L-DOPA levels and melanin production. Cyclo(L-Phe-L-Pro) (1) and cyclo(L-Trp-L-Pro) (2) were thus confirmed to have the potential for use in functional whitening cosmetics containing actinomycete-derived secondary metabolites.

ABSTRACT

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered to be a manifestation of metabolic syndrome and has become one of the chronic diseases that endanger health around the world. There is still a lack of effective therapeutic drugs in clinical practice. Farnesoid X receptor (FXR) has been a popular target for NAFLD research in recent years. Fexaramine (Fex) is a potent and selective agonist of FXR, and its mechanism of action to improve NAFLD is unclear. Therefore, in this study, a mouse model of NAFLD was constructed using a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet and treated with Fex orally for 6 weeks. We evaluated the ameliorative effect of Fex on disorders of glucolipid metabolism in NAFLD mice, and preliminarily explored its potential mechanism of action. The animal experiments were approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (approval number: PZSHUTCM210913011). In this study, it was found that 100 mg·kg-1 Fex significantly inhibited body weight gain, alleviated insulin resistance, improved liver injury and lipid accumulation in NAFLD mice. The effect of Fex on the expression of hepatic intestinal FXR and its target genes in NAFLD mice was further examined. Analysis of serum and hepatic bile acid profiles and expression related to hepatic lipid metabolism. It was found that Fex could stimulate intestinal FXR, promote fibroblast growth factor 15 (FGF15) secretion, inhibit the expression of cytochrome P450 family 7 subfamily A member 1 (CYP7A1), the rate-limiting enzyme of bile acid synthesis in liver, regulate bile acid synthesis by negative feedback, and improve the disorder of bile acid metabolism. At the same time, Fex reduces liver lipid synthesis and absorption, increases fatty acid oxidation, thus improving liver lipid metabolism. This study shows that Fex can improve NAFLD by activating intestinal FXR-FGF15 signal pathway and regulating liver lipid metabolism.

ABSTRACT

Under the background of internationalization of medical education in China, the general medical education for foreign students started relatively late. At present, there are still some problems in it, such as imperfect curriculum system, lack of unified and standardized textbooks, inadequate language skills of community teachers, difficulties in carrying out practical courses, and cultural differences. Based on the current situation of general practice education for international students in China, this article proposes the following solutions: to insist on standardizing quality management and construct scientific training schemes; to understand the present situation of primary medical and health services in their country of origin, promote cultural integration, and actively explore the fit between training and demand; to write bilingual textbooks suitable for practical needs; to overcome language barriers and build a team of community teachers that speak English; to adopt flexible and diversified teaching modes and comprehensively improve the quality of general practice teaching for international students, so as to promote the communication and dissemination of basic medical and health concepts in China.

ABSTRACT

ObjectivesTo assess the association of habitual glucosamine use with coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, hospital admission, or mortality with Corona Virus Disease-19 (COVID-19) in a large population based cohort. DesignPopulation based, prospective cohort study. SettingUK Biobank. ParticipantsParticipants with complete information on habitual glucosamine use and SARS-CoV-2 infection or COVID-19-related outcomes were included. These participants were registered from 2006 to 2010, followed up until 2022 and participated in SARS-CoV-2 tests between 2020 and 2022. Main outcome measuresSARS-CoV-2 infection, COVID-19 hospital admission, and COVID-19 mortality. ResultsAt baseline, 20,118 (15.9%) of the 126,518 participants reported as habitual glucosamine users. During the median follow-up 12.16 years, there were 53,682 cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection, 2,120 cases of COVID-19 hospital admission and 548 cases of COVID-19 mortality. The multivariate adjusted hazard ratios of habitual glucosamine users to non-users were 1.02 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.99 to 1.05) for SARS-CoV-2 infection, 0.73 (95% CI 0.63 to 0.85) for COVID-19 hospital admission, and 0.74 (95% CI 0.56 to 0.98) for COVID-19 mortality. The Cox proportional hazard analysis after propensity-score matching yielded consistent results. ConclusionsHabitual glucosamine use seems to be associated with a lower risk of hospital admission and mortality with COVID-19, but not the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

ObjectivesTo prospectively investigate the associations of habitual fish oil use with Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, hospital admission, or mortality with Corona Virus Disease-19 (COVID-19) in a large-scale cohort. DesignProspective population-based cohort study. SettingUK Biobank. ParticipantsA total of 110 440 participants aged 37 -73 years who completed a questionnaire on supplement use, which included fish oil at baseline were enrolled between 2006 and 2010 and followed up until 2022. Main exposureAll participants filled out questionnaires about the habitual use of supplements, including fish oil. Main outcome measuresSARS-CoV-2 infection, COVID-19 hospital admission and COVID-19 mortality. ResultsAt baseline, 29 424 (26.6%) of the 110 440 participants reported habitual use of fish oil supplements. The multivariable adjusted hazard ratios for habitual users of fish oil versus non-users were 0.95 (0.93 to 0.98) for SARS-CoV-2 infection among participants with follow-up time less than 12.1 years but no significant associations were observed for participants with follow-up time more than 12.1 years. For COVID-19-related outcomes, the hazard ratios were 0.79 (95% confidence interval 0.71 to 0.88) for COVID-19 hospital admission and 0.72 (0.60 to 0.87) for COVID-19 mortality. For COVID-19-related outcomes, the association seemed to be stronger among those with longstanding illness. The Cox proportional hazard analysis after propensity-score matching yielded consistent results. ConclusionsHabitual fish oil supplement is associated with a lower risk of hospital admission and mortality with COVID-19, but not associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in the population with more than 12.1 years of follow-up.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveConcerns have been raised about the widespread use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), and current findings linking the regular use of PPIs to respiratory infections remain inconsistent. Our study aims to evaluate whether PPI use increases the risk of pneumonia, influenza, and COVID-19. MethodThe presented study included 160,923 eligible participants from the UK Biobank (mean age 56.5 years, 53% women). Cox proportional hazards regression and propensity score-matching analyses were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Effect modifications by stratifications, including indications and CYP2C19 phenotypes were tested. ResultsThe regular use of PPIs was associated with increased risks of developing pneumonia (hazard ratio [HR] 1.42, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.26-1.59) and influenza (HR 1.31, 95% CI 1.11-1.55). However, the risk of COVID-19 infection among regular PPI users was not significantly increased (HR 1.05, 95% CI 0.95-1.16). The burden was more notably observed in patients without indications of PPI use (HR 1.52, 95% CI 1.33-1.73 for pneumonia; HR 1.36, 95% CI 1.12-1.64 for influenza). The risk for pneumonia was higher among the CYP2C19 rapid and ultrarapid metabolizers (HR 1.45, 95% CI 1.22-1.73, P for interaction < 0.001). The propensity score-matching analyses yielded similar trends. ConclusionsThe regular use of PPIs is associated with increased susceptibility to pneumonia and influenza, but not COVID-19 infection. The risks are even higher among recipients without main indications. Our study highlights the appropriate use and de-prescribing of PPIs according to indications and CYP2C19 phenotypes for patients and clinical practitioners. ABSTRACT

Phylogenetic conflicts limit our understanding of the evolution of terrestrial life under multiple whole genome duplication events, and the phylogeny of early terrestrial plants remains full of controversy. Although much incongruence has been solved with so-called robust topology based on single or lower copy genes, the evolutionary mechanisms behind phylogenetic conflicts such as polyploidization remain poorly understood. Here, through decreasing the effects of polyploidization and increasing the samples of species, which represent all four orders and eight families that comprise early leptosporangiate ferns, we have reconstructed a robust phylogenetic tree and network with 1125 1-to-1 orthologs based on both coalescent and concatenation methods. Our data consistently suggest that Matoniales, as a monophyletic lineage including Matoniaceae and Dipteridaceae, should be redefined as an ordinal rank. Furthermore, we have identified and located at least 11 whole-genome duplication events within the evolutionary history of four leptosporangiates lineages, and associated polyploidization with higher speciation rates and mass extinction events. We hypothesize that paleopolyploidization may have enabled leptosporangiate ferns to survive during mass extinction events at the end Permian period and then flourish throughout the Mesozoic era, which is supported by extensive fossil records. Our results highlight how ancient polyploidy can result in rapid species radiation, thus causing phylogenetic conflicts yet allowing plants to survive and thrive during mass extinction events.

ABSTRACT

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC), as the key enzyme in initial carbon fixation of C4and crassulacean acid mechanism (CAM) pathways, was thought to undergo convergent adaptive changes resulting in the convergent evolution of C4 and CAM photosynthesis in vascular plants. However, the integral evolutionary history and convergence of PEPC in plants remain poorly understood. In the present study, we identified the members of PEPC gene family across green plants with seventeen genomic datasets, found ten conserved motifs and modeled three-dimensional protein structures of 90 plant-type PEPC genes. After reconstructing PEPC gene family tree and reconciled with species tree, we found PEPC genes underwent 71 gene duplication events and 16 gene loss events, which might result from whole-genome duplication events in plants. Based on the phylogenetic tree of the PEPC gene family, we detected four convergent evolution sites of PEPC in C4 species but none in CAM species. The PEPC gene family was ubiquitous and highly conservative in green plants. After originating from gene duplication of ancestral C3-PEPC, C4-PEPC isoforms underwent convergent molecular substitution that might facilitate the convergent evolution of C4 photosynthesis in Angiosperms. However, there was no evidence for convergent molecular evolution of PEPC genes between CAM plants. Our findings help to understand the origin and convergent evolution of C4 and CAM plants and shed light on the adaptation of plants in dry, hot environments.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To observe the changes of varicella zoster virus (VZV)-DNA load in aqueous humour samples in VZV-induced acute retinal necrosis (ARN) in the early stages of antiviral treatment.Methods:A retrospective observational clinical study. From April 2016 to April 2018, 24 patients with 24 eyes of VZV-induced ARN who were diagnosed by Department of Ophthalmology, Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University and received complete aqueous humor sampling were included in the study. Among them, there were 13 males with 13 eyes, 11 females with 11 eyes; 12 left eyes and 12 right eyes; the age was 52.0±9.5 years old (39-71 years old). The time from the onset of ocular symptoms to the diagnosis of ARN was 16.6±6.1 days (7-30 days). Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and ultra-wide-field fundus imaging were performed in all affected eyes. The BCVA examination was carried out using the Snellen visual acuity chart, which was converted into the logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) visual acuity. All patients were given intravitreal injection of 40 mg/ml ganciclovir 0.1 ml (including 4 mg of ganciclovir), 2 times a week, until the active necrotizing retinal lesions subsided, at most after the diagnosis 4 weeks, with a maximum of 9 injections. The follow-up period was 12.8±5.6 months. The aqueous humor samples were collected at presentation and 4, 7, 14, 21, 28 days after the initiation of antiviral therapy, and the VZV-DNA load was detected by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. A plateau phase and a logarithmic reduction phase of the DNA load changes were observed after antiviral treatment began. Wilcoxon rank sum test was used to compare and analyze the differences in BCVA between the eyes at baseline and last follow-up.Results:The mean viral load at presentation was 8.6×10 7±1.3×10 8 copies/ml. The initial plateau phase last for an average of 7.4±2.4 days. In the following logarithmic reduction phase, the mean slope of the decline in viral load was -0.13±0.04 log/day, and the expected time for half reduction of the initial viral load was 2.5±0.7 days. After 28 days antiviral treatment, the viral load decreased to 1.7×10 5±1.8×10 5 copies/ml. In the course of the disease, rhegmatogenous retinal detachment occurred in 16 eyes. Before treatment and at the last follow-up, the logMAR BCVA of the affected eye was 1.1±0.6 and 0.8±0.7, respectively. The results of correlation analysis showed that the logMAR BCVA at the last follow-up was correlated with the initial VZV-DNA load ( r=0.467, P=0.033). Conclusion:The VZV-DNA load in the aqueous humor of eyes with VZV-induced ARN is significantly decreased after antiviral treatment, which is closely related to the clinical process of ARN.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To observe the clinical features and prognosis of eyes with corneal suture-related infective endophthalmitis.Methods:A retrospective interventional case series. From January 2020 to December 2021, 5 patients (5 eyes) with corneal suture-related infectious endophthalmitis diagnosed by ophthalmic examination at Department of Ophthalmology of the Eye-ENT Hospital of Fudan University were included in the study. Among them, there were 3 males and 2 females; all had unilateral disease; the mean age was 30.80±21.98 years. Sutures of 4 cases were secondary to lens related surgery and of 1 case was secondary to penetrating keratoplasty. Average retention time of corneal suture was 20.00±7.41 months. Of the 5 eyes, corneal sutures were removed in 1 eye due to redness and eye pain in another hospital; 3 eyes were loosened of the sutures in the remaining 4 eyes. The patients were given standard treatment for infectious endophthalmitis, including systemic and local anti-infective therapy; corneal suture removal, intraocular injection, and vitrectomy (PPV). In PPV, it was decided whether to give silicone oil filling according to the situation. The follow-up time after treatment was 11.00±7.38 months. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), B-mode ultrasound and microbial culture results of the affected eye before and after surgery were observed and analyzed.Results:Infiltrates, ulcers, or abscesses surrounding the suture may be seen on the cornea of the affected eye. B-mode ultrasonography showed vitreous opacity, preretinal cords, and spherical wall edema in the entire segment of the affected eye. The results of vitreous humor culture were positive in 3 eyes, which were Streptococcus viridis, Staphylococcus hominis subspecies, Staphylococcus epidermidis. After treatment, all the intraocular infections in the affected eyes were successfully controlled, and there were no cases of enucleation of ocular contents or enucleation. Before treatment, the BCVA of the affected eye was from no light perception to counting fingers; after treatment, 2 eyes had BCVA> 0.3.Conclusions:Infiltration, ulcers or abscesses around the sutures can be seen in the cornea of corneal suture-related infective endophthalmitis patients, which are related to the long-term retention of the sutures in the eye. Most of the affected eyes have loose sutures when they go to the doctor; timely treatment can effectively control the infection, and some eyes have good visual prognosis.

ABSTRACT

As an important auxiliary tool for amputees to gain abled limb functions, prosthetic limbs with decoration or feedforward control channel could not meet the needs. In order to enable the prosthesis to deliver the information, includes temperature, pressure, position, shape and so on, a variety of sensory feedback methods have been integrated into the prosthesis. According to the position of the feedback terminal on the human body, the perceptual feedback systems include invasive and noninvasive sensory feedback. This review presents the research progress of these perceptual feedback techniques, and summarizes the problems in the application in artificial limbs. Finally, the development trend of sensory feedback technology in prostheses is prospected.

ABSTRACT

The oral cavity is the second largest microbial bank in humans after the intestinal canal, colonizing a large number of microorganisms including viruses, bacteria, archaea, fungi and protozoa. The great number of microbial cells, good DNA stability, and individual has a unique microbial community, these characteristics make the human microbiome expected to become a new biomarker for forensic individual identification. This article describes the characteristics of human oral microorganisms and microbial molecular markers in detail, analyzes the potential application value of microorganisms in forensic individual identification, and reviews the research progress of human oral microorganisms in forensic individual identification.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether icariin improves erectile function in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) by regulating the NRF2 pathway. METHODS: We equally randomized 24 ten-week-old healthy male Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKR) and healthy male SHR rats into four groups: WKR control, WKR + icariin, SHR control and SHR + icariin, the controls treated intragastrically with normal saline, and the animals in the WKR + icariin and SHR + icariin groups with icariin, all at 10 mg/kg/d for 4 weeks. Then we obtained the body weight and serum T level of the rats and measured the maximum intracorporeal pressure / mean arterial pressure (ICPmax/MAP) and the contents of nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor-2 (Nrf2), memeoxygenase-1 (HO-1), endothellial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) , dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH), nitric oxide (NO), cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) in the corpora cavernosa tissue. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences in the body weight or serum T level among the four groups of rats. The ratios of ICPmax/MAP and P-eNOS/eNOS and the expressions of Nrf2, HO-1, PPAR-γ, DDAH, NO and cGMP in the corpora cavernosa tissue were significantly higher in the SHR + icariin group than in the SHR control (P < 0.05) but lower than in the WKR control. The ADMA level in the corpora cavernosa tissue was remarkably reduced in the SHR + icariin group compared with that in the SHR control (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: By up-regulating the expression of Nrf2, icariin increases the HO-1, DDAH and PPAR-γ levels and the P-eNOS/eNOS ratio in the corpora cavernosa and improves the erectile function of spontaneously hypertensive rats.

ABSTRACT

Dryopteriswulingshanensis, a new species growing on limestone in the Wulingshan Mountains, Hunan, China, is described and illustrated. This species is most similar to D.jishouensis and D.gymnophylla on general morphological traits, such as the form of scales, rhizome and sori, but differs by the number of vascular bundles at the base of the petiole, length to width ratio of lamina, stalk length of basal pinnae, division of the lamina, apex form of the pinnule and habitat. Moreover, molecular phylogenetic analysis using the chloroplast rbcL gene suggested that D.wulingshanensis, as the sister group of D.jishouensis, is a monophyletic clade. According to its restricted geographic range, small populations and few individuals, D.wulingshanensis should be considered endangered, according to the IUCN Red List criteria.

ABSTRACT

The magnetic α-Fe2O3/Fe3O4 heterostructure nanorods were fabricated by an alcohol-solution direct combustion method. The influence of the calcination temperature on the composition and properties of the nanorods was investigated. When the calcination temperature was not greater than 400 °C, the magnetic α-Fe2O3/Fe3O4 heterostructure nanorods were obtained, and the saturation magnetization (Ms) of the magnetic α-Fe2O3/Fe3O4 heterostructure nanorods decreased with the calcination temperature increasing from 250 °C to 400 °C; when the calcination temperature was equal or greater than 450 °C, α-Fe2O3 nanorods were obtained. In addition, the effects of nanorods' concentration, nanorods' constituent, incubation time and magnetic field on A549 cytotoxicity were investigated. The cytotoxicity of the heterostructure nanorods appeared time-dependent and concentration-dependent, and the magnetic field could enhance the cytotoxicity of nanorods to A549.
