ABSTRACT

Debittering of pomelo juice was conducted using 3.7 g of activated resin, resulting in a 36.8% reduction in bitterness without affecting the bioactive properties of juice. The debittered juice was then encapsulated with Moringa oleifera exudate at various ratios (1-5%), yielding a powder with a slightly rough surface. Total phenol content (TPC) increased by 46-56% compared to the debittered juice. Functional yoghurt containing encapsulates at concentrations of 1% and 2% demonstrated that the 2% concentration led to longer storage duration, resulting in increased acidity and syneresis compared to the control. TPC of the yoghurt (161.89-198.22 µg Gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g) remained significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that of the control (47.15 µg GAE/g) and acacia gum-based yoghurt (141.89-171.37 µg GAE/g), decreasing with storage duration. Addition of encapsulates significantly altered the yoghurt's texture, resulting in lower firmness (0.57 to 0.64 N) compared to the control, while adhesiveness values remained comparable (6.33 to 6.25 g.s). The highest values of G' and G" were observed in samples containing 2% encapsulates with moringa compared to those with acacia gum. This study suggests potential avenues for further exploration in functional foods with enhanced health benefits.

ABSTRACT

Nigeria's neurosurgical field faces profound challenges, including a critically low neurosurgeon-to-patient ratio and significant migration of medical professionals to developed countries. High costs, low socioeconomic status, and the urban-centric location of neurosurgical centers impede access to care. Key barriers to service delivery include lack of manpower, insufficient emergency care, limited imaging modalities, inadequate operative equipment, and ineffective political and administrative policies. Neurotrauma is the primary reason for neurosurgical intervention but is poorly managed due to delayed access and insufficient guidelines. The neurosurgical education system is strained by limited training capacity and the absence of subspecializations, restricting specialized care. Research output is low, hindered by limited infrastructure, lack of databases, insufficient funding, and minimal international collaboration. To address these issues, it is critical to enhance the imaging capabilities, ensure the availability of operative equipment, and establish effective policies for task sharing and communication at different levels of care. Other approaches include expanding training capacity, particularly in rural areas, implementing a uniform match system for residency, addressing gender disparities, and utilizing dual practice to ensure adequate compensation for neurosurgeons. Furthermore, stakeholders should develop subspecialization programs in areas such as neurovascular, neuro-oncology, pediatric neurosurgery, and minimally invasive neurosurgery to expand service scope. To transform the neurosurgical research landscape, efforts should be made to establish electronic medical databases, foster international collaborations to ensure funding, and make research mandatory for accreditation renewal to ensure continuous academic contribution.

ABSTRACT

Background: Noma is a neglected tropical disease and a global health concern. Objectives: To elucidate the epidemiology, management, prevention, and public health implications of Noma. Methods: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, supplemented by Google Scholar and World Health Organization databases, were searched using keywords to gather both published and grey literature from 1970 to 2023 in English. Results: Approximately 30,000-40,000 cases occur annually, with varying incidences across various African countries, such as Nigeria, Niger, and Chad. Incidence in Nigerian and Ethiopian states range from 0.6 to 3300 and 1.64 to 13.4 per 100,000 population, respectively. Mortality is approximately 8.5% in Niger. Risk factors include malnutrition, immunocompromised status, poor dental hygiene, inadequate sanitation, gingival lesions, low socioeconomic status, chronic and infectious diseases, low birth weight, high parity, diarrhoea, and fever. Diagnosis is primarily made based on clinical signs/symptoms and accordingly staging of disease is done. Stage I, II and II presents with acute necrotizing gingivitis, facial edema with halitosis, and necrotizing stomatitis, respectively. If the patient survives acute stages, the progress to Stage IV and Stage V manifests as trismus, difficulty in deglutition and phonation, and facial disfigurement, with increased severity in last stage. Treatment encompasses antibiotic therapy (amoxicillin, metronidazole, chlorhexidine, ampicillin, gentamicin), surgical interventions, wound management (honey dressing, ketamine), and nutritional support. Prevention strategies include oral hygiene, vaccination, health education, and community-based interventions. Conclusion: Noma's recent inclusion in WHO list of neglected tropical diseases is a milestone in recognizing the importance of prevention and early intervention to globally enhance health outcomes.

Agro-environmental sustainability is based upon the adoption of efficient resources in agro-practices that have a nominal impact on the ecosystem. Insect pests are responsible for causing severe impacts on crop productivity. Wide ranges of agro-chemicals have been employed over the last 50 years to overcome crop yield losses due to insect pests. But better knowledge about the hazards due to chemical pesticides and other pest resistance and resurgence issues necessitates an alternative for pest control. The applications of biological pesticides offer a best alternate that is safe, cost-effective, easy to adoption and successful against various insect pests and pathogens. Like other organisms, insects can get a wide range of diseases from various microbes, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and nematodes. In order to create agricultural pest management practices that are environmentally beneficial, bacterial entomopathogens are being thoroughly studied. Utilization of bacterial biopesticides has been adopted for the protection of agricultural products. The different types of toxin complexes released by various microorganisms and their mechanisms of action are recapitulated. The present review described the diversity and biocontrol prospective of certain bacteria and summarised the potential of bacterial biopesticides for the management of agricultural pests, insects, and other phytopathogenic microorganisms in agricultural practices.

ABSTRACT

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a critical global One Health concern, ensuing from unintentional and continuous exposure to antibiotics, as well as challenges in accurate contagion diagnostics. Addressing AMR requires a strategic approach that emphasizes early stage prevention through screening in clinical, environmental, farming, and livestock settings to identify nonvulnerable antimicrobial agents and the associated genes. Conventional AMR diagnostics, like antibiotic susceptibility testing, possess drawbacks, including high costs, time-consuming processes, and significant manpower requirements, underscoring the need for intelligent, prompt, and on-site diagnostic techniques. Nanoenabled artificial intelligence (AI)-supported smart optical biosensors present a potential solution by facilitating rapid point-of-care AMR detection with real-time, sensitive, and portable capabilities. This Review comprehensively explores various types of optical nanobiosensors, such as surface plasmon resonance sensors, whispering-gallery mode sensors, optical coherence tomography, interference reflection imaging sensors, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, microring resonance sensors, and optical tweezer biosensors, for AMR diagnostics. By harnessing the unique advantages of these nanoenabled smart biosensors, a revolutionary paradigm shift in AMR diagnostics can be achieved, characterized by rapid results, high sensitivity, portability, and integration with Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies. Moreover, nanoenabled optical biosensors enable personalized monitoring and on-site detection, significantly reducing turnaround time and eliminating the human resources needed for sample preservation and transportation. Their potential for holistic environmental surveillance further enhances monitoring capabilities in diverse settings, leading to improved modern-age healthcare practices and more effective management of antimicrobial treatments. Embracing these advanced diagnostic tools promises to bolster global healthcare capacity to combat AMR and safeguard One Health.

ABSTRACT

Biodegradable and sustainable food packaging (FP) materials have gained immense global importance to reduce plastic pollution and environmental impact. Therefore, this review focused on the recent advances in biopolymers based on cellulose derivatives for FP applications. Cellulose, an abundant and renewable biopolymer, and its various derivatives, namely cellulose acetate, cellulose sulphate, nanocellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, and methylcellulose, are explored as promising substitutes for conventional plastic in FP. These reviews focused on the production, modification processes, and properties of cellulose derivatives and highlighted their potential for their application in FP. Finally, we reviewed the effects of incorporating cellulose derivatives into film in various aspects of packaging properties, including barrier, mechanical, thermal, preservation aspects, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. Overall, the findings suggest that cellulose derivatives have the potential to replace conventional plastics in food packaging applications. This can contribute to reducing plastic pollution and lessening the environmental impact of food packaging materials. The review likely provides insights into the current state of research and development in this field and underscores the significance of sustainable food packaging solutions.

ABSTRACT

In the present scenario, growing population demands more food, resulting in the need for sustainable agriculture. Numerous approaches are explored in response to dangers and obstacles to sustainable agriculture. A viable approach is to be exploiting microbial consortium, which generate diverse biostimulants with growth-promoting characteristics for plants. These bioinoculants play an indispensable role in optimizing nutrient uptake efficiency mitigating environmental stress. Plant productivity is mostly determined by the microbial associations that exist at the rhizospheric region of plants. The engineered consortium with multifunctional attributes can be effectively employed to improve crop growth efficacy. A number of approaches have been employed to identify the efficient consortia for plant growth and enhanced crop productivity. Various plant growth-promoting (PGP) microbes with host growth-supporting characteristics were investigated to see if they might work cohesively and provide a cumulative effect for improved growth and crop yield. The effective microbial consortia should be assessed using compatibility tests, pot experimentation techniques, generation time, a novel and quick plant bioassay, and sensitivity to external stimuli (temperature, pH). The mixture of two or more microbial strains found in the root microbiome stimulates plant growth and development. The present review deals with mechanism, formulation, inoculation process, commercialization, and applications of microbial consortia as plant bioinoculants for agricultural sustainability.

ABSTRACT

The SARS-CoV-2 virus has undergone substantial evolution, leading to emergence of new FLiRT variants characterized by specific spike mutations-F to L at position 456 and R to T at position 346-enhancing their transmissibility and immune evasion capabilities. Particularly, KP.2 shows a significant increase in cases in the U.S., indicating a potential shift in the pandemic landscape due to its greater ability to evade vaccine-induced immunity and its higher effective reproduction number compared to JN.1. This evolving scenario underscores the need for continuous monitoring and adaptive response strategies to address the challenges posed by these new variants. This abstract examines the emergence of FLiRT variants KP.2 and KP1.1, descendants of the Omicron JN.1 variant, as they draw global attention amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is increasingly recognized for its effects beyond mental health, with emerging evidence suggesting a significant association with cardiovascular diseases (CVD). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize available evidence on the association between PTSD and various cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature search in databases until March 15, 2024. Studies were included if they were observational in design and assessed the association between PTSD and cardiovascular outcomes. Data were extracted on study characteristics, participant demographics, PTSD assessment, cardiovascular outcomes, and effect estimates. Meta-analyses were performed using random-effects models, and heterogeneity was assessed using the I² statistic. All statistical analyses were conducted using R software version 4.3. RESULTS: Twenty studies met the inclusion criteria, encompassing a total of over 335,000 participants. The pooled analyses demonstrated a statistically significant increased risk of any CVD (HR = 1.417, 95 % CI: 1.313-1.522), MI (HR = 1.415, 95 % CI: 1.331-1.500), and stroke (HR = 2.074, 95 % CI: 1.165-2.982) associated with PTSD. Substantial heterogeneity was observed across the studies for stroke and MACE, and evidence of publication bias was noted. CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis confirms a significant association between PTSD and an increased risk of several cardiovascular outcomes, indicating the importance of integrating cardiovascular risk management with psychiatric care for PTSD patients to mitigate the heightened risk of CVDs. Future research should focus on exploring the underlying mechanisms and potential interventions to manage both PTSD and its associated cardiovascular risks effectively.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Stem cell therapy offers promising benefits like modulating immune responses, reducing inflammation, and aiding liver regeneration. This umbrella review seeks to compile evidence from systematic reviews to assess the efficacy of stem cell therapy for improving liver function and survival rates in chronic liver disease patients. METHODS: We searched electronic databases up to February 15, 2024. The selection process focused on systematic reviews comparing stem cell therapy with standard care or a placebo. The primary outcomes evaluated were changes in liver enzymes, the MELD score, and survival rates. Nested Knowledge software was utilized for screening and data extraction. All statistical analyses were performed using R software, version 4.3. RESULTS: Our umbrella review included 28 systematic reviews. The meta-analysis showcased a notable improvement in survival rates with a pooled RR of 1.487 (95% CI: 1.281 to 1.727). In non-randomized studies, albumin levels exhibited an SMD of 0.786 (95% CI: 0.368 to 1.204), indicating positive therapeutic effects. For ALT, the meta-analysis revealed a decrease in levels with an SMD of -0.499 (95% CI: -0.834 to -0.164), and for AST, an overall SMD of -0.362 (95% CI: -0.659 to -0.066) was observed, suggesting hepatoprotective effects. No significant changes were observed in total bilirubin levels and MELD scores in RCTs. CONCLUSION: Stem cell therapy exhibits potential as a novel treatment for chronic liver diseases, as it has demonstrated improvements in survival rates and certain liver function markers. More high-quality RCTs are needed in the future to fully ascertain the efficacy of stem cell therapy in this patient population.

BACKGROUND: While Cardiovascular disease (CVD) affects both men and women, emerging evidence suggests notable gender differentials in disease prevalence. This study aims to explore and analyse the gender differentials in CVD disease prevalence in India. METHODS: The present study utilizes data from first wave of the nationally representative survey "Longitudinal Ageing Study in India" (LASI, WAVE-I, 2017-18) with the eligible sample size of 31,464 individuals aged 60 years and above. Logistic regression analysis was used to understand risk of CVD by demographic characteristics. Factors contribution to gender differences in CVD prevalence was examined using a non-linear Fairlie decomposition. RESULTS: The prevalence of CVD was lower in men (31.06%) compared to women (38.85%). Women have a 33% higher likelihood of CVD compared to men (OR: 1.33; 95% CI: 1.25-1.42). Lack of education also confers a lower risk, more pronounced in women with no schooling (OR: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.7-0.94) compared to men (OR: 0.52; 95% CI: 0.47-0.58). Morbidity influences CVD presence more among women than men, with individuals suffering from three or more diseases having markedly increased odds (Men: OR: 3.89; 95% CI: 3.54-4.3, Women: OR: 6.97; 95% CI: 6.48-10.11). Smoking accounted increase in (20.52%) the gender gap while years of schooling dramatically lessened the gender gap (-46.30%). CONCLUSION: Result show gender differential in CVD prevalence and underlying risk factors, underscoring the need for gender-specific preventive strategies and interventions. Our findings highlight the importance of refined approach to cardiovascular health that considers the complex interplay of biological, social, and environmental determinants.
