ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Research for the development of nursing education strategies to enhance the competency of the nursing students on disaster safety are needed. This study aimed to identify the types of perceptions on disaster safety in nursing students, and to analyze and describe the characteristics of each type of disaster safety perception of nursing students in South Korea. METHODS: An exploratory study design applying Q methodology, a research method designed to study subjectivity. Participants were 30 nursing students in their 20s who are living in C city. This P-set was selected to best reveal the disaster safety awareness of nursing students. Participants provided their subjective viewpoints by sorting 30 statements into a grid. Analyses involved correlation and factor analysis. The study was carried out from June to December, 2020. RESULTS: In this study, four types of disaster safety awareness of nursing students were uncovered. The characteristics of each type were confirmed as follows: Type 1 was national responsibility, type 2 was individual responsibility, type 3 was preparedness-oriented, and type 4 was education-oriented. CONCLUSION: This study shows that the types of perceptions on disaster safety in Korean nursing students were national responsibility, individual responsibility, preparedness-oriented, and education-oriented. The findings from this study can be implied as fundamental data in nursing education of disaster safety.

ABSTRACT

Background: Attention is drawn to the subjective health status and quality of life of older adult single-person households, whose number is gradually increasing as factors including low fertility, increased life expectancy, aging, and household miniaturization interact. Objective: The study was to identify predictors that affect the quality of life of single-person households aged 65 years or older and living in South Korea. Methods: A secondary data analysis design was used. Data included physical, mental, social, and demographic characteristics, subjective health status, and quality of life parameters of 1,029 older adult single-person households surveyed by the Korea Health Panel in 2019. For analysis, the predictive model was evaluated using split-sample validation and the ROC curve. The area under the curve after the decision tree analysis was calculated. Final nodes predicting the quality of life of older adult single-person households were derived. Results: Significant predictors were identified in this order: subjective health status, chronic disease, income, and age. Subjective health status was the most important factor influencing quality of life (△ p < 0.001, x2 = 151.774). The first combination that perceived high quality of life of older adult single-person households was the case of high subjective health status and no chronic disease, followed by the case of high subjective health status, presence of chronic disease, and high income. Conclusion: This study confirmed that subjective health status and chronic disease are essential factors for quality of life among the four related indicators of quality of life presented by the OECD. In nursing practice, nurses need to pay attention the factors influencing quality of life of older adult single-person households. Especially, nursing practice for older adult single-person households needs to be focused on improving subjective health status and on relieving chronic disease.

ABSTRACT

Stress exposure is a major risk factor for mental disorders such as depression. Because of the limitations of classical antidepressants such as side effects, low efficacy, and difficulty in long-term use, new natural medicines and bioactive molecules from plants with greater safety and efficacy have recently attracted attention. Luteolin-7-O-glucuronide (L7Gn), a bioactive molecule present in Perilla frutescens, is known to alleviate severe inflammatory responses and oxidative stress in macrophages. However, its antistress and antidepressant effects have not been elucidated. The present study aims to explore the antidepressant the effect of L7Gn on stress-induced behaviors and the underlying mechanism in a mouse sleep deprivation (SD) model. L7Gn treatment improved depression-like and stress coping behaviors induced by SD stress, as confirmed by the tail suspension test and forced swimming test. Furthermore, L7Gn treatment reduced the blood corticosterone and hippocampal proinflammatory cytokine levels which were increased by SD stress, and L7Gn also increased the mRNA and protein levels of hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) which were reduced by SD stress. Additionally, treatment with L7Gn resulted in increases in the phosphorylation of tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB), extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), and cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB), which are downstream molecules of BDNF signaling. These findings suggest that L7Gn have therapeutic potential for SD-induced stress, via activating the BDNF signaling.

ABSTRACT

The blood-brain barrier (BBB), which consists mainly of brain microvascular endothelial cells and astrocytes connected by tight junctions (TJs) and adhesion molecules (AMs), maintains the homeostatic balance between brain parenchyma and extracellular fluid. Accumulating evidence shows that BBB dysfunction is a common feature of neurodegenerative diseases, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, and Alzheimer's disease. Among the various pathological pathways of BBB dysfunction, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are known to play a key role in inducing BBB disruption mediated via TJ modification, AM induction, cytoskeletal reorganization, and matrix metalloproteinase activation. Thus, antioxidants have been suggested to exert beneficial effects on BBB dysfunction-associated brain diseases. In this review, we summarized the sources of ROS production in multiple cells that constitute or surround the BBB, such as BBB endothelial cells, astrocytes, microglia, and neutrophils. We also reviewed various pathological mechanisms by which BBB disruption is caused by ROS in these cells. Finally, we summarized the effects of various natural polyphenols on BBB dysfunction to suggest a therapeutic strategy for BBB disruption-related brain diseases.

ABSTRACT

Excessive stress plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of mood disorders such as depression. Fermented natural products have recently attracted attention because of their health benefits. We evaluated the antidepressant-like efficacy of fermented Perilla frutescens (FPF), and its underlying mechanisms, in sleep deprivation (SD)-induced stress mice. SD-stressed mice revealed a remarkable increase in the immobility time in both forced swimming test and tail suspension test; this increase was ameliorated by treatment with FPF at doses of 100 and 150 mg/kg. FPF treatment also reduced the level of stress hormones such as corticosterone and adrenocorticotropic hormone. Additionally, FPF increased the levels of serotonin and dopamine which were significantly decreased in the brain tissues of SD-stressed mice. The increased expression of proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α and IL1ß, and the decreased expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the stressed mice were significantly reversed by FPF treatment. Furthermore, FPF also increased phosphorylation of tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB), extracellular regulated protein kinase (ERK), and cAMP response element binding protein (CREB). Among the six components isolated from FPF, protocatechuic acid and luteolin-7-O-glucuronide exhibited significant antidepressant-like effects, suggesting that they are major active components. These findings suggest that FPF has therapeutic potential for SD-induced stress, by correcting dysfunction of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and modulating the BDNF/TrkB/ERK/CREB signaling pathway.

ABSTRACT

Designated strain K5T was isolated from soil on Jeju Island. The bacterium was aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, oxidase-positive, catalase-low activity, motile, short-rod shaped, opaque and formed white colonies that were circular, raised and had entire margins. Strain K5T was able to grow at 15-40 °C, pH 4-9 and at 0-2 % (w/v) NaCl concentration. Phylogenetic analysis based on its 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain K5T is closely related to Ferrovibrio soli A15T (98.9 % sequence similarity), Ferrovibrio denitrificans Sp-1T (98.7 %) and Ferrovibrio xuzhouensis LM-6T (97.4 %). The sole respiratory quinone was determined to be ubiquinone-10. The dominant fatty acids of strain K5T were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c / C18 : 1ω6c, 29.8 %), C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c (20.2 %) and C16 : 0 (24.4 %). DNA G+C content was 63.6 % and DNA-DNA relatedness between strain K5T and other three members of the genus Ferrovibrio ranged from 24 to 28 %. The major polar lipids were identified as phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and aminolipids. Moreover, polyphasic characterization revealed that strain K5T represents a novel species in the genus Ferrovibrio, for which the name Ferrovibrio terrae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is K5T (=KCCM 43295T=LMG 30611T).

ABSTRACT

Alloplastic total replacement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) was developed in recent decades. In some conditions, previous studies suggested the rationale behind alloplastic TMJ replacement rather than reconstruction with autogenous grafts. Currently, three prosthetic products are available and approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Among these products, customized prostheses are manufactured, via computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system for customized design; stock-type prostheses are provided in various sizes and shapes. In this report, two patients (a 50-year-old female who had undergone condylectomy for the treatment of osteochondroma extending to the cranial base on the left condyle, and a 21-year-old male diagnosed with left temporomandibular ankylosis) were treated using the alloplastic total replacement of TMJ using stock prosthesis. The follow-up results of a favorable one-year, short-term therapeutic outcome were obtained for the alloplastic total TMJ replacement using a stock-type prosthesis.
