ABSTRACT

Dental wear arises from mechanical (attrition or abrasion) and chemical (erosion) factors. Despite its prevalence and clinical significance, accurately measuring and understanding its causes remain challenging in everyday practice. This one-year study with 39 participants involved comprehensive examinations and full-arch intraoral scans at the start and after 12 months. Volume loss exceeding 100 µ on each tooth's surfaces (buccal, lingual/palatine and incisal/occlusal) was measured by comparing three-dimensional scans from both time points. This study also assessed factors such as abrasion and erosion through clinical exams and questionnaires. There were no significant differences in dental wear in participants with sleep bruxism. However, noticeable wear occurred in the front teeth of those with waking bruxism and joint-related symptoms. Increased wear was associated with frequent consumption of acidic drinks, regular swimming, dry mouth, nocturnal drooling and heartburn, while no significant wear was found in patients with reflux. The used methodology proved effective in accurately assessing the progression of dental wear, which is important as many patients may initially be asymptomatic. The variability observed in dental wear patterns underscores the need to develop specific software applications that allow immediate and efficient comparison of wear areas based on extensive analysis of patient databases.

ABSTRACT

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The artificial intelligence (AI) software program ChatGPT is based on large language models (LLMs) and is widely accessible. However, in prosthodontics, little is known about its performance in generating answers. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the performance of ChatGPT in generating answers about removable dental prostheses (RDPs) and tooth-supported fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty short questions were designed about RDPs and tooth-supported FDP, and 30 answers were generated for each of the questions using ChatGPT-4 in October 2023. The 900 generated answers were independently graded by experts using a 3-point Likert scale. The relative frequency and absolute percentage of answers were described. Accuracy was assessed using the Wald binomial method, while repeatability was evaluated using percentage agreement, Brennan and Prediger coefficient, Conger generalized Cohen kappa, Fleiss kappa, Gwet AC, and Krippendorff alpha methods. Confidence intervals were set at 95%. Statistical analysis was performed using the STATA software program. RESULTS: The performance of ChatGPT in generating answers related to RDP and tooth-supported FDP was limited. The answers showed a reliability of 25.6%, with a confidence range between 22.9% and 28.6%. The repeatability ranged from substantial to moderate. CONCLUSIONS: The results show that currently ChatGPT has limited ability to generate answers related to RDPs and tooth-supported FDPs. Therefore, ChatGPT cannot replace a dentist, and, if professionals were to use it, they should be aware of its limitations.

ABSTRACT

AI has revolutionized the way we interact with technology. Noteworthy advances in AI algorithms and large language models (LLM) have led to the development of natural generative language (NGL) systems such as ChatGPT. Although these LLM can simulate human conversations and generate content in real time, they face challenges related to the topicality and accuracy of the information they generate. This study aimed to assess whether ChatGPT-4 could provide accurate and reliable answers to general dentists in the field of oral surgery, and thus explore its potential as an intelligent virtual assistant in clinical decision making in oral surgery. Thirty questions related to oral surgery were posed to ChatGPT4, each question repeated 30 times. Subsequently, a total of 900 responses were obtained. Two surgeons graded the answers according to the guidelines of the Spanish Society of Oral Surgery, using a three-point Likert scale (correct, partially correct/incomplete, and incorrect). Disagreements were arbitrated by an experienced oral surgeon, who provided the final grade Accuracy was found to be 71.7%, and consistency of the experts' grading across iterations, ranged from moderate to almost perfect. ChatGPT-4, with its potential capabilities, will inevitably be integrated into dental disciplines, including oral surgery. In the future, it could be considered as an auxiliary intelligent virtual assistant, though it would never replace oral surgery experts. Proper training and verified information by experts will remain vital to the implementation of the technology. More comprehensive research is needed to ensure the safe and successful application of AI in oral surgery.

Background: Sexual victimization is a serious public health problem, with a range of negative impacts on mental and physical health. Responses that individuals get to disclosure of sexual victimization play an important role in recovery. With the increased use of social media, more survivors are talking about their experiences of sexual victimization online. Research is needed to document the correlates of online disclosure of sexual victimization.Objective: The current study examined the role of demographic characteristics, assault severity, coping strategies, and social isolation as putative correlates of disclosing sexual victimization online via the hashtag #MeToo.Methods: A sample of 637 adults recruited via social media who reported a history of sexual victimization since the age of 14 completed self-report surveys using online survey software to assess disclosure of sexual victimization, assault severity, coping strategies, and social isolation.Results: Multivariate analyses suggest that levels of emotion-focused coping were positively associated with the disclosure of sexual victimization online via #MeToo. Further, individuals who had experienced completed rape by verbal coercion were less likely to disclose via #MeToo, compared to individuals who experienced other forms of assault.Conclusion: Coping strategies and assault severity play an important role in determining whether survivors disclose sexual victimization online via #MeToo. Findings suggest that individuals may disclose via #MeToo to seek support or express their emotions. Further, individuals whose sexual victimization experiences do not conform to 'typical' sexual victimization experiences are less likely to disclose via #MeToo.


HIGHLIGHTSGreater reported use of emotion-focused coping is associated with an increased likelihood of disclosing via #MeToo.Individuals who experienced completed rape by verbal coercion were less likely to disclose via #MeToo, compared to individuals who experienced other forms of assault.Findings highlight the need to further investigate correlates of disclosure via #MeToo.

ABSTRACT

AIM: Chatbot Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) is a generative artificial intelligence (AI) software based on large language models (LLMs), designed to simulate human conversations and generate novel content based on the training data it has been exposed to. The aim of this study was to evaluate the consistency and accuracy of ChatGPT-generated answers to clinical questions in endodontics, compared to answers provided by human experts. METHODOLOGY: Ninety-one dichotomous (yes/no) questions were designed and categorized into three levels of difficulty. Twenty questions were randomly selected from each difficulty level. Sixty answers were generated by ChatGPT for each question. Two endodontic experts independently answered the 60 questions. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS program to calculate the consistency and accuracy of the answers generated by ChatGPT compared to the experts. Confidence intervals (95%) and standard deviations were used to estimate variability. RESULTS: The answers generated by ChatGPT showed high consistency (85.44%). No significant differences in consistency were found based on question difficulty. In terms of answer accuracy, ChatGPT achieved an average accuracy of 57.33%. However, significant differences in accuracy were observed based on question difficulty, with lower accuracy for easier questions. CONCLUSIONS: Currently, ChatGPT is not capable of replacing dentists in clinical decision-making. As ChatGPT's performance improves through deep learning, it is expected to become more useful and effective in the field of endodontics. However, careful attention and ongoing evaluation are needed to ensure its accuracy, reliability and safety in endodontics.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Recent years have seen an increase in the use of social media, by the healthcare sector, including dentistry. Indeed, social media may now be important communication tools for dental practices and patients. This work analyzes the influence of patient (male and female) use of dental practice social media on their decision to change practice. The results also provide insight into the factors patients considered important when choosing a dental practice. METHODS: This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Universidad Europea de Madrid (No. CIPI/22.022). Using a web-based questionnaire, a cross-sectional study was undertaken involving a Spanish population that made use of dental services. The questionnaire consisted of four parts covering provision of informed consent, the collection of sociodemographic data, patient use of dental practice social media, and the factors considered important when changing dental practice. RESULTS: All participants gave their informed consent regarding inclusion. No compensation was provided for participation. 588 people responded to the questionnaire, of whom 503 were eligible for inclusion. Most respondents were female (312/503; 62%). Most (151/503; 30%) last changed dental practice during the previous 2-5 years. 208/503 (41.4%) indicated that they had visited dental practice social media. 118/503 (23.5%) indicated that they had made use of such the last time they changed dental practice; 102 of these 118 (85.6%) reported their experience to have influenced their decision to change. Respondents who had changed practice in the last 5 years had interacted with dental practice social media more than those who changed over 11 years ago (p < .05), and those who changed practice in the present/past year were more influenced by these media (p < .05). The factor considered most important was 'Facilities and technology'. No gender-based differences were seen for any measured variable (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Different factors affect the selection of a new dental practice, but respondents who changed practice in the last few years were more likely to have made use of dental practice social media, which, for some, influenced their final decision to change. Dental practices might do well to consider using social media as communication and marketing tools.

Resumen Objetivo: Sintetizar y valorar críticamente las recomendaciones sobre manejo neurocognitivo del paciente con cardiopatía congénita presentadas en guías de práctica clínica y declaraciones científicas. Método: Revisión sistemática de recomendaciones de práctica (PROSPERO CRD42020205202). Se realizó una búsqueda en PubMed, SCOPUS, Ovid/Cochrane, y LILACS y se revisaron repositorios de sociedades científicas y referencias de los documentos incluidos. La valoración crítica se hizo mediante el AGREE-II (escenario ideal) para las guías y declaraciones, y mediante el AGREE-REX para las recomendaciones (escenarios ideal y local). Se presentan la matriz de recomendaciones y el análisis de barreras potenciales para su implementación en Colombia. Resultados: Se incluyeron 18 recomendaciones relacionadas. La media en el AGREE-II fue 89.6. La media en el AGREE-REX fue 90.1 en el escenario ideal y 69.9 en el escenario local. Las recomendaciones incluidas se centran en vigilancia, tamizaje, evaluación y consejería; no se identificaron recomendaciones sobre intervención neurocognitiva. Las principales barreras de implementación en Colombia son la no disposición a pagar por parte del sistema de salud y la ausencia de oferta integral de atención para el manejo neurocognitivo en cardiopatía congénita. Conclusión: Las recomendaciones identificadas podrían ser adaptadas en una guía de práctica colombiana, realizando modificaciones en reconocimiento del contexto local.


Abstract Objective: To synthesize and critically assess the recommendations on neurocognitive management of patients with congenital heart disease presented in clinical practice guidelines and scientific statements. Method: A systematic review of practice recommendations (PROSPERO CRD42020205202). PubMed, SCOPUS, Ovid/Cochrane, and LILACS were searched, and repositories of scientific societies and references of included documents were reviewed. Critical appraisal was performed using the AGREE-II (ideal scenario) for the guidelines and statements, and recommendations were assessed using the AGREE-REX (ideal and local scenarios). A matrix of recommendations and analysis of potential barriers for its implementation in Colombia is presented. Results: Eighteen related recommendations were included. The average AGREE-II was 89.6. The average AGREE-REX was 90.1 in the ideal setting and 69.9 in the local setting. The included recommendations focus on surveillance, screening, evaluation, and counseling; no recommendations on neurocognitive intervention were identified. The main implementation barriers in Colombia are the unwillingness to pay on the part of the health system and the absence of a comprehensive health care offer for neurocognitive management in congenital heart disease. Conclusion: The identified recommendations could be adapted into a Colombian practice guideline, making modifications that recognize the local context.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, there has been an increase in the incidence of dental wear; thus, an early diagnosis is important. Conventional methods of diagnosis are based primarily on the visual abilities of the dentist, and therefore the use of new technologies for the detection of dental wear may be very useful. The aim of the study was to analyze the sensitivity and specificity of the intraoral scanner for measuring dental wear, as well as to evaluate patients' satisfaction with the use of the scanner. The study was conducted with 46 volunteers who underwent three intraoral analyses: a first baseline scanning, a second scanning after 6 months and a final scanning after one year performed by four operators divided into two groups. One of the operators performed the visual analysis of dental wear, and the other performed the analysis using the intraoral scanner 3M™ True Definition intraoral scanner (ESPE, Seefeld, Germany). The data obtained from the intraoral scanner showed levels of specificity and sensitivity that enable the intraoral scanner to be used as a diagnostic tool in the assessment of tooth wear. The participants also showed a high degree of satisfaction with the scanner as a communication tool.

ABSTRACT

Ulomoides dermestoides (UL) are macroinvertebrates insects belonging to Tenebrionidae Coleopteran family. They were used to hasten, in five days, the biodegradation-mineralization of thermoplastic starch (TPS)-poly(lactic acid) (PLA) films, otherwise biodegradable under composting conditions. After the contact of TPS-PLA film with UL for five days, TPS was metabolized and PLA was hydrolysed, as evidenced by decreasing of hydroxyl and carbonyl group peaks intensity by FTIR spectra, increasing of 13% of PLA crystallinity by DSC thermograms, reduction of PLA and TPS thermal stability by TGA analysis; faecal residues evidenced two glass transition temperature Tg, at 33 °C and 57 °C, associated with depolymerized TPS and PLA, respectively. SEM micrographs highlighted consumption of TPS-PLA surface, while GPC analysis showed a decrease in PLA concentration by 20% during contact by UL. Mineralization tests evidenced UL boosted effect on TPS biodigestion-biodegradation (80%) and PLA biodisintegration (50%), envisaging a challenging perspective for end-life management of bioplastics in environmental conditions.

ABSTRACT

Calcium sensing receptor, a pleiotropic G protein coupled receptor, activates secretory pathways in cancer cells and putatively exacerbates their metastatic behavior. Here, we show that various CaSR mutants, identified in breast cancer patients, differ in their ability to stimulate Rac, a small Rho GTPase linked to cytoskeletal reorganization and cell protrusion, but are similarly active on the mitogenic ERK pathway. To investigate how CaSR activates Rac and drives cell migration, we used invasive MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. We revealed, by pharmacological and knockdown strategies, that CaSR activates Rac and cell migration via the Gßγ-PI3K-mTORC2 pathway. These findings further support current efforts to validate CaSR as a relevant therapeutic target in metastatic cancer.

Desde finales del siglo pasado existen estudios que sugieren una asociación entre la halitosis y la infección por el Helicobacter pylori y una mejoría de la misma tras la erradicación de la infección. Presentamos un caso en el que la halitosis es la única manifestación clínica de la infección por Helicobacter pylori, la cual desaparece tras la erradicación de la bacteria (AU)


Helicobacter pylori infection is a less known cause of halitosis in pediatrics. Since the end of the last century there have been studies suggesting an association between halitosis and Helicobacter pylori infection, and its improvement after infection eradication. We present one case in which halitosis appears as the only clinical manifestatiton of Helicobacter pylori infection, which disappears after bacterial eradication (AU)

Resumen La encefalopatía posterior reversible es un síndrome clínico-radiológico caracterizado por hipertensión arterial, cefalea, alteraciones visuales, convulsiones y delirium. Radiológicamente, se observa edema vasogénico en regiones subcorticales con predilección por los lóbulos posteriores del cerebro. Ha sido asociada con trasplante de órgano sólido, hipertensión arterial y uso de medicamentos inmunosupresores, como los anticalcineurínicos. Se reporta el caso de un niño de seis años quien inició con cefalea, cifras tensionales elevadas, irritabilidad, agresividad y por momentos agitado cinco días después de recibir un trasplante ortotópico de corazón y un día después de inicio de tacrolimus. El tratamiento incluyó manejo sintomático con antihipertensivos y anticonvulsivantes, además del aumento progresivo del inmunosupresor hasta niveles terapéuticos en sangre para disminuir el riesgo de rechazo del injerto. El síndrome de encefalopatía posterior reversible debe ser considerado en pacientes trasplantados de corazón que reciben inhibidores de la calcineurina y presentan síntomas neurológicos.


Abstract Posterior reversible encephalopathy is a clinic-radiological syndrome characterized by arterial hypertension, headache, visual disturbances, seizures and delirium. Radiologically, vasogenic edema is observed in subcortical regions with predilection for the posterior lobes of the brain. It has been associated with solid organ transplantation, arterial hypertension and the use of immunosuppressive drugs such as anticalcineurin. We report the case of a six-year-old boy who started with headache, elevated blood pressure, irritability, aggressiveness and at times agitated five days after receiving an orthotopic heart transplant and one day after starting tacrolimus. His treatment included symptomatic management with antihypertensives and anticonvulsants, in addition to a progressive increase in immunosuppressant to therapeutic blood levels to reduce the risk of graft rejection. Reversible posterior encephalopathy syndrome should be considered in heart transplant recipients receiving calcineurin inhibitors who present neurological symptoms.

RESUMEN Las taquicardias ventriculares de larga duración o incesantes pueden causar insuficiencia cardíaca, disfunción del ventrículo izquierdo y cardiomiopatía, cuadros que revierten una vez resueltas las arritmias. Se trata de un diagnóstico de exclusión: puede existir una cardiopatía de base que empeora con la taquicardia y debe precisarse si la arritmia lleva a la cardiomiopatía (puede existir un subregistro) o viceversa. Se presenta un paciente con taquicardia incesante del tracto de salida del ventrículo derecho, de larga evolución, con repercusión hemodinámica, cardiomiopatía dilatada y disfunción grave del ventrículo izquierdo, rebelde a fármacos antiarrítmicos y con dos ablaciones fallidas, pendiente de biopsia endomiocárdica y nueva ablación de su taquicardia. Se discuten algunas pistas para diferenciar las arritmias del tracto de salida del ventrículo derecho, en sus variantes benignas (las más frecuentes) y malignas. Algunas pistas para diferenciarlas son: la duración del complejo QRS, el intervalo de acoplamiento de la extrasístole y la frecuencia de la taquicardia.


ABSTRACT Long-lasting or incessant ventricular tachycardias may cause heart failure, left ventricular dysfunction, and cardiomyopathy; conditions that reverse once the arrhythmias have been solved. This is a diagnosis of exclusion: there may be a basic heart disease that worsens with the tachycardia and it must be clarified whether the arrhythmia leads to cardiomyopathy (there may be an underregistration) or vice versa. A patient with incessant right ventricular outflow tract tachycardia, with long evolution, hemodynamic repercussion, dilated cardiomyopathy and severe dysfunction of the left ventricle, refractory to antiarrhythmic drugs and with two failed ablations, pending endomyocardial biopsy and new ablation of his tachycardia is presented. Some clues to differentiate right ventricular outflow tract arrhythmias, in their benign (most frequent) and malignant variants, are discussed. Some clues to differentiate them are: the duration of the QRS complex, the coupling interval of premature contractions and the heart rate of the tachycardia.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the vertical bone gain achieved after the sinus lift procedure with beta-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) used as a bone substitute and simultaneous implant placement. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-eight sinus lift procedures (utilizing a synthetic ceramic containing 99.9% tricalcium phosphate as a bone substitute) and simultaneous implant placements were performed on 119 patients. The lateral window approach surgical protocol for maxillary sinus lift was performed on the patients. The implants were evaluated using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) at 6 months following placement. The vertical bone gain was considered a primary variable, while implant length, diameter, and location were considered secondary variables. RESULTS: The ANOVA results showed no statistical difference in vertical bone gain with implant parameters like implant length, width, and position. Pearsons correlation revealed a statistically significant positive correlation with vertical bone gain and implant length and diameter. A further multivariate linear regression analysis was performed and it observed statistically significant associations between the variables in the study after adjusting for confounding factors. CONCLUSIONS: This study concluded that there was vertical bone gain with the usage of ß-TCP in maxillary sinus lift surgical procedure with immediate implant placement and that implant variables like length and diameter had a significant influence on the average bone gain values. The implant position did not have a statistically significant influence but there was considerable variation in the bone gain between first, second premolar, and molar regions.

RESUMEN El sistema Purkinje y el tracto de salida del ventrículo derecho tienen un papel trascendente en relación con las arritmias ventriculares malignas (taquicardia y fibrilación ventriculares, torsión de puntas) y con la muerte súbita cardíaca. Se discuten su fisiopatología, participación en el origen (extrasístoles desencadenantes) y mantenimiento de estas arritmias, y las posibilidades ablativas para disminuir las recurrencias y los episodios de tormenta eléctrica. Se expone el diagnóstico diferencial entre variantes benignas y malignas de la taquicardia ventricular relacionada con el tracto de salida del ventrículo derecho y la relación entre factores genéticos, estructurales, electroanatómicos y funcionales (inflamación, fibrosis), con los eventos clínicos y la vulnerabilidad a las arritmias. Se necesita reclasificar algunas de estas enfermedades, vistas ahora en su carácter orgánico-funcional (síndrome de Brugada, por ejemplo), lo cual implica cambios revolucionarios en algunos conceptos clásicos y una nueva visión en cuanto a la estratificación de riesgo y la conducta terapéutica.


ABSTRACT The Purkinje system and the right ventricular outflow tract play a pivotal role in relation to malignant ventricular arrhythmias (ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation, torsades de pointes) and sudden cardiac death. Details such as their pathophysiology, origin involvement (triggering extrasystoles) maintenance of such arrhythmias, and ablative possibilities to reduce recurrences and electrical storm events are discussed herein. The differential diagnosis between benign and malignant ventricular tachycardia related to the right ventricular outflow tract, and the relationship between genetic, structural, electroanatomical and functional factors (inflammation, fibrosis) with clinical events and vulnerability to arrhythmias are presented. Some of these diseases need to be reclassified as they are now seen in their organic-functional character (Brugada syndrome, for example), and this implies radical changes in some classical concepts as well as a new perspective on risk stratification and therapeutic management.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of the biomarker fibrinogen (FB), along with the markers white blood cell (WBC) count, absolute neutrophil count (ANC), and C-reactive protein (CRP), to discriminate appendicitis from nonspecific abdominal pain (NSAP) in preschool children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively evaluated all children aged <5 years admitted for suspected appendicitis at an academic pediatric emergency department during 5 years. Diagnostic accuracy of FB (prothrombin time-derived method), WBC, ANC, and CRP were assessed by the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver-operating characteristic curve. RESULTS: A total of 82 patients were enrolled in the study (27 NSAP, 17 uncomplicated, and 38 complicated appendicitides). WBC and ANC had moderate diagnostic accuracy for appendicitis versus NSAP (WBC: AUC 0.66, ANC: AUC 0.67). CRP and FB had good diagnostic accuracy for appendicitis versus NSAP (CRP: AUC 0.78, FB: AUC 0.77). WBC and ANC are not useful to discriminate complicated versus uncomplicated appendicitis (WBC: AUC 0.43, ANC: AUC 0.45). CPR and FB had good diagnostic accuracy for complicated versus uncomplicated appendicitis (CRP: AUC 0.80, FB: AUC 0.73). CONCLUSION: CRP and FB are more useful than WBC and ANC to discriminate appendicitis from NSAP in preschool children. CRP and FB are especially useful to discriminate complicated from uncomplicated appendicitis and NSAP. In a child with suspected appendicitis, a plasma FB level (prothrombin time-derived method) >540 mg/dL is associated with an increased likelihood of complicated appendicitis.

ABSTRACT

AIM: The aim of this study is to determine the most useful diagnostic tools to differentiate appendicitis from non-specific abdominal pain (NSAP) in pre-school children. METHODS: We prospectively evaluated all children aged 5 years or younger admitted for suspected appendicitis at a paediatric emergency department during 5 years. Cases of NSAP and appendicitis were enrolled according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The different variables collected were assessed by statistic and diagnostic accuracy studies. RESULTS: A total of 82 patients were studied: 27 cases of NSAP and 55 cases of appendicitis. We found no symptoms or signs with a high power of discrimination between both processes. Complicated cases of appendicitis begin to appear when the duration of symptoms exceeds 12 h. Among laboratory tests, C-reactive protein (CRP) value >34 mg/L was the variable with a greater association to appendicitis (odds ratio 9.8). Abdominal ultrasound (US) had high sensitivity and specificity to differentiate appendicitis, significantly improving its diagnostic accuracy when the duration of symptoms exceeds 12 h. CONCLUSIONS: A good history and physical examination are important in the diagnostic process, but reliable physical signs can be difficult to elicit in pre-school children. CRP and abdominal US are useful investigations that can improve diagnostic accuracy. According to our results, abdominal pain duration longer than 12 h or CRP value >34 mg/L should be an indication to perform an abdominal US in pre-school children with right lower quadrant tenderness.

ABSTRACT

Two azo dyes, acid red 1 (AR1) and acid red 18 (AR18), were used alone or in combination with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) for the electropolymerization of a pyrrole monomer. Polypyrrole (PPy) showed higher redox capacity when SDS and AR18 were used simultaneously as dopant agents (PPy/AR18-SDS) than when the conducting polymer was produced in the presence of SDS, AR18, AR1, or an AR1/SDS mixture. Moreover, PPy/AR18-SDS is a self-stabilizing material that exhibits increasing electrochemical activity with the number of oxidation-reduction cycles. A mechanism supported by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction structural observations was proposed to explain the synergy between the SDS surfactant and the AR18 dye. On the other hand, the Bordeaux red color of PPy/AR18-SDS, which exhibits an optical band gap of 1.9 eV, rapidly changed to orange-yellow and blue colors when films were reduced and oxidized, respectively, by applying linear or step potential ramps. Overall, the results indicate that the synergistic utilization of AR18 and SDS as dopant agents in the same polymerization reaction is a very successful and advantageous strategy for the preparation of PPy films with cutting-edge electrochemical and electrochromic properties.
