ABSTRACT

With the objective of deepening into the didactic preparation of the medical students in the School of Medical Sciences located in Bayamo, four pedagogic workshops, two of them directed to the students, and the others to the professors, were carried out. It was concluded that there exist significant deficiencies affecting the didactic preparation of these students, which have an impact on the formation of the environmental culture in the medical career. The limitations for the insertion of an environmental dimension into the disciplines, the poor knowledge related to this culture, and the deficiencies in the process dynamics were the reasons for setting out mid and short-term strategies to solve these problems. The curricula of the medical career were reviewed. The design of a pedagogic model to promote the formation of the environmental culture in these students seems to be an impact solution for the deficiencies found(AU)

ABSTRACT

Osteoblast differentiation depends on the coordinated network of evolutionary conserved transcription factors during bone formation and homeostasis. Evidence indicates that bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) and Wnt proteins regulate several steps of skeletal development. Here, we provide a molecular description of the cooperative effects of BMP and Wnt canonical pathway on the expression of the early osteogenic genes Dlx5, Msx2, and Runx2 in C2C12 cells, primary cultures of bone marrow-mesenchymal stem cells, and organotypic calvarial cultures. Coordinated regulation of these genes leads to the cooperative activation of their downstream osteogenic target gene osterix. Induction of these genes is mediated through enhancer regions with an evolutionary conserved structure encompassing both Smad and TCF/LEF1 DNA-binding sites. Formation of a cooperative complex is mediated through DNA binding of Smads and TCF4/ß-catenin to their cognate sequences, as well as protein-protein interactions between them. The formation of these cooperative transcriptional complexes results in a more efficient recruitment of coactivators such as p300. We propose that evolutionary conserved regulatory regions in specific osteogenic master genes are key integrative modules during osteogenesis.

ABSTRACT

To study in depth the didactic training of assistant students in the Medicine career of the Medical Sciences Branch in Bayamo province, four educational workshops were performed, two directed to the assistant students and two to tutors. We concluded that there are serious insufficiencies in the didactic training of these students affecting their professional academic training. The scarce systematization in the educational work of tutors with students and the poor didactic training of these ones led to the design of short and medium term for solution of these insufficiencies. We made a review of current rules of the Frank País Assistant Students Movement. The design of a professional educational model to training of these students is projected like an impact solution to found insufficiencies

ABSTRACT

Intrathecal (IT) depot liposomal cytarabine is useful in solid tumors or lymphomatous meningitis, but has scarcely been used in central nervous system (CNS) involvement in acute leukemia. We report the results of compassionate therapy with IT depot liposomal cytarabine in 10 patients with acute myeloid leukemia with CNS involvement. Five of 6 cases receiving this drug as the only IT therapy and the remaining 4 receiving it as adjuvant therapy to other CNS-directed therapies showed clearance of cerebrospinal fluid blast cells, with sustained response in 5 and mild side effects. Systemic therapy was given concomitantly in all cases, with high-dose cytarabine in 6. Clinical trials should establish the role of IT liposomal cytarabine in leukemic meningitis.
