ABSTRACT

In this study, we investigated Cu-Co ferrite nanofibers (NFs) that were synthesized for the first time employing the electrospinning technique. The structure, phase purity and crystallite size of all the prepared NFs were revealed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis. The NFs crystallized in the Fd3̄m (no. 227) space group and the cation distribution arrangement over distinct sites in their structure was analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) together with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy analysis showed the microstructure of the NFs and verified their expected chemical compositions. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images confirmed the fibrous nature and the construction of the NFs. The band gap energies derived from the UV-vis reflectance spectra showed a blue shift with an increase in the amount of Cu in the sample from 1.42 eV to 1.86 eV. Magnetization (M) as a function of magnetic field (H) measurements performed at ambient and low temperatures showed the ferrimagnetic behavior of all the NFs. The magnetic parameters including coercivity (Hc), saturation magnetization (Ms), remanent magnetization (Mr), and squareness ratio were determined from the recorded magnetization curves. At 300 K, Ms was reduced from 78.8 to 42.4 emu g-1, Mr reduced from 22.8 to 7.6 emu g-1 and the Bohr magneton reduced from 3.3 to 1.8µB with an increase in the content of Cu in the samples. The same trend was observed at 10 K, where Ms was reduced from 93.7 to 50.9 emu g-1, Mr reduced from 60.9 to 35.9 emu g-1 and the Bohr magneton reduced from 3.94 to 2.16µB. Alternatively, Hc has the highest values for x = 0 (850 Oe at 300 K and 5220 Oe at 10 K) and x = 0.6 (800 Oe at 300 K and 5400 Oe at 10 K). The anti-cancer activity of the NFs was evaluated using the MTT cell viability assay, showing a reduction in the viability of both HCT-116 and HeLa cancer cells compared to non-cancerous HEK-293 cells after treatment with the NFs. Apoptotic activity was examined by DAPI staining, where treatment with the NFs induced chromatin condensation and nuclear disintegration in HCT-116 cells.

ABSTRACT

In the current study, Ni0.4Cu0.2Zn0.4La x Y x Fe2-x O4 (x = 0.00 - 0.10) nanospinel ferrites (NSFs) were fabricated via an ultrasonic irradiation route. The creation of single phase of spinel nanoferrites (NSFs) was investigated by X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD) and selected area diffraction pattern (SAED). The cubic morphology of all samples was confirmed by scanning and transmission electron microscopies (SEM and TEM) respectively. The UV-Vis investigations provided the direct optical energy band gap values in a narrow photon energy interval of 1.87-1.92 eV. The 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy analysis explained that the hyperfine magnetic fields of Octahedral (Oh) and Tetrahedral (Td) sites decreased with substitution. The paramagnetic properties of NPs decrease with increase of content of doped ions. Investigations of magnetic properties reveal a superparamagnetic nature at 300 K and soft ferromagnetic trait at 10 K. The M s (saturation magnetization) and M r (remanence) decrease and the H c (coercivity) increases slightly with La3+ and Y3+ substitution. The observed magnetic traits are deeply discussed in relation with the morphology, structure, magnetic moments and cation distributions. The microwave characterization of the prepared NSFs showed that, dissipation (i.e., absorption) of incoming microwave energy occurs at a single frequency, for each sample, lying between 7 and 10.5 GHz. The reflection losses (RL) at these frequencies range from -30 to -40 dB and the mechanism of which is explained in the framework of dipolar relaxation and spin rotation. The best microwave properties were obtained with a LaY concentration of x = 0.08 having an RL of -40 dB @ 10.5 GHz and an absorption bandwidth of 8.4 GHz @ -10 dB. With these high values of RL and absorbing bandwidth, LaY doped NiCuZn NSF products would be promising candidates for radar absorbing materials in the X-band.

ABSTRACT

Fe3O4@His@Cu magnetic recyclable nanocatalyst (MRCs) was synthesized by reflux method using L-histidine as linker. The composition, structure and magnetic property of the product were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). Powder XRD, FT-IR and EDAX results confirmed that the as-synthesized products has Fe3O4 with spinel structure and Cu nanoparticles with moderate crystallinity without any other impurities. The surface of the Fe3O4@His nanocomposite was covered by tiny Cu nanoparticles. We examine the catalytic activity of Fe3O4@His@Cu MRCs for the degradation of two azo dyes, methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB) as well as their mixture. The reusability of the nanocatalyst was good and sustained even after 3 cycles. Therefore this innovated Fe3O4@His@Cu MRCs has a potential to be used for purification of waste water.
