ABSTRACT

In a double-blind randomised clinical trial a specific inhibition of peptic activity with a pentapeptide, pepstatin, had no significant advantage over placebo in the ulcer healing and symptomatology of duodenal ulcer. Thus, the inhibition of pepsin in human gastric juice does not appear to have a major influence on the healing of duodenal ulcer.

ABSTRACT

The amount of immunoglobulin-containing cells in gastric mucosa from 6 patients with Ménétriér's disease was estimated. Furthermore, the rate of gastric epithelial cell proliferation was sutdied in 4 of the patients. Fluorescent antisera specifically reacting with IgA, IgG and IgM were applied, and accordingly the cells were differentiated and quantitated. Other biopsies were labelled in vitro with 3H-thymidine and autoradiographs were prepared. The percentage of DNA-synthesising cells in the progenitor cell region was estimated. The number of IgM-containing cells in the gastric fundic mucosa was markedly increased, while the rate of epithelial cell proliferation was increased in 2 cases and within normal range in the remaining 2 patients.

ABSTRACT

59 outpatients with irritable bowel syndrome participated in a randomised double-blind trial. The patients in the treatment group received three biscuits daily each containing 10 g of ordinary miller's bran, whereas the patients in the control group received wheat biscuits of a similar appearance. The treatment period was 6 weeks. 52% of the patients in the treatment group noted subjective improvement compared with 65% in the control group. The results of this trial do not support the routine use of miller's bran in irritable bowel syndrome.

ABSTRACT

In 12 patients suffering from ulcerative colitis the small-intestinal disaccharidase activity has been determined during an acute exacerbation of the disease as well as after remission. The lactase activity was significantly lower during the acute stage. No case of transitoric lactose malabsorption was found.

ABSTRACT

Jejunal mucosal biopsies were obtained from 13 patients with acute enteritis. Ten patients were examined again after recovery. Quantitative analysis of the findings in immunofluorescence microscopy showed a significant increase of IgA- and IgM-containing cells during acute enteritis. After recovery the number of immunoglobulin-containing cells and their distribution within the different immunoglobulin classes were within normal limits.
