ABSTRACT

We analyzed the structure of the functional feeding groups of Ephemeroptera in five different types of substrates (litter in riffles, backwater litter, wood, stones and roots) from first to fifth orders at the Pindaíba River basin, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. We also studied the specificity and frequency of the organism, and if the functional approach reflects changes within the community through ordination analysis. Our results assemble information about the functional classification of mayfly nymphs and show that scrapers were the most abundant, and gathering - collectors are the more diverse. Third order streams were the most richest and most abundant while functional feeding group distribution corroborated the predictions of The River Continuum Concept. Besides, communities were much more taxonomically structured than functionally structured. This fact underlies the importance of the biology of organisms, and not only the functional feeding group, for substrate selection. The preference of some genera for specific substrates confirms this value.


Analisamos a estrutura dos grupos funcionais alimentares de Ephemeroptera em cinco tipos de substratos (folhiço em corredeira, folhiço em remanso, madeira, pedras e raízes) de trechos de primeira a quinta ordens da bacia do rio Pindaíba, estado do Mato Grosso, Brasil. Verificamos, ainda, a preferência de táxons por substratos específicos através da especificidade e frequência dos organismos, e se a abordagem funcional reflete as variações dentro da comunidade. Nossos resultados agregam informações a respeito da classificação funcional dos efemerópteros e mostram que os raspadores foram os mais abundantes e os coletores-apanhadores comportam uma maior riqueza de táxons. Os córregos de terceira ordem foram os mais ricos e abundantes enquanto que as distribuições dos grupos funcionais alimentares corroboram as predições do Conceito do Continuum fluvial. Além disso, as comunidades estudadas foram muito mais estruturadas taxonomicamente do que funcionalmente. Esse fato atesta a importância da biologia dos organismos para a seleção dos substratos. A preferência de alguns gêneros por substrato específico corrobora esta importância.

ABSTRACT

The effect of different stream environmental preservation levels, in 1st to 4th orders, over the richness, abundance, similarity in the composition and the potential of Baetidae (Ephemeroptera) species as bioindicators were investigated in a Cerrado region located in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. A total of twenty species/morphospecies were catalogued from the 1752 samples of nymphs, resulting in a new record for two species in Brazil. Values of Habitat Integrity Index (HII) were categorized among damaged, modified, and preserved environments. Species richness was different between sites, being greater in disturbed habitats. Total abundance was higher among preserved and altered environments, and differed significantly from the degraded areas. The NMDS analysis indicates that, in preserved and modified sites, the similarity in the composition of species differs from degraded areas. Four species showed a positive relationship with increasing values of HII. Baetidae showed environmental indicator species with different levels of preservation, with Zelusia principalis Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1998 and Baetodes sp. being indicators of preserved environments and Aturbina nigra Salles, Boldrini & Shimano, 2011, Callibaetis sp. 2, Camelobaetidius aff. janae, Paracloeodes binodulus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1996 and Waltzoyphius roberti Thomas & Peru, 2002 as indicators of modified environments. The knowledge on the ecology of species advances in terms of providing subsidies for the biomonitoring of basins and the use of indicator species.


O efeito dos diferentes níveis de preservação ambiental de córregos de 1ª a 4ª ordens sobre a riqueza, abundância, similaridade na composição de Baetidae (Ephemeroptera) e o potencial das espécies como bioindicadoras foram investigados em uma região de cerrado matogrossense. Um total de vinte espécies/morfoespécies foi catalogado dentre as 1752 ninfas amostradas, sendo reportado dois novos registros de espécies para o país. Os valores do Índice de Integridade de Hábitat (HII) obtidos foram categorizados para ambientes degradados, alterados e conservados. A riqueza de espécies foi diferente entre os locais, sendo maior em ambientes alterados. A abundância foi maior entre ambientes conservados e alterados, sendo significantemente diferente dos locais degradados. A análise NMDS indicou que locais conservados e alterados apresentam similaridade de composição de espécies, diferindo dos locais degradados. Quatro espécies demonstraram relação positiva com o aumento dos valores do HII. Baetidae apresentou espécies indicadoras de ambientes com diferentes níveis de preservação, sendo Zelusia principalis Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1998 e Baetodes sp. indicadoras de ambientes conservados e Aturbina nigra Salles, Boldrini & Shimano, 2011, Callibaetis sp. 2, Camelobaetidius aff. janae Dominique & Thomas, 2000, Paracloeodes binodulus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1996, Waltzoyphius roberti Thomas & Peru, 2002 como indicadoras de ambientes alterados. This work aimed to assess the effect of certain physical-chemical variables and the Habitat Integrity Index (HII) have on an aquatic and semi-aquatic heteropteran community. We collected in five streams (from 1st to 4th order) that differed in habitat integrity, in order to test 1) whether heteropteran richness decreases with the Habitat Integrity Index; and 2) whether richness responds to alterations in water physical-chemical variables, since these influence community structure. In each stream, linear transects of 100 m were demarcated. A total of 1425 specimens from 10 families, 30 genera and 67 morphospecies were collected. Species richness was correlated with the Habitat Integrity Index (HII), showing a positive relationship only for Gerromorpha. This may be due to the fact that streams with greater integrity offer nearby marginal vegetation where prey and shelter can be easily found, representing optimal places for oviposition and hunting. Species adapted to such conditions are more sensitive to alterations in the physical structure of rivers. Significant differences in the composition of Heteroptera and studied infra-orders were also observed, which suggests that the anthropic disturbances over these sites have changed these insect communities. Our results indicate that the alteration in riparian areas can lead to significant changes in Heteroptera composition, even though species richness was not affected. The physical-chemical variables showed no influence on the distribution of species. This result suggests that the environment presented insufficient variation that could cause changes in the investigated community, which implies that factors other than those analyzed here may explain such variation. Three species Rhagovelia trailli (White, 1879), Rhagovelia sp. 4 and Tenagobia incerta (Lundblad, 1928) were considered to be indicators of pristine sites. The results indicate that aquatic and semi-aquatic Heteroptera and more specifically the sub-order Gerromorpha can be an important tool to assess environmental habitat integrity and enhance conservation actions of riparian forests.

The objective of this study was to respond if exist a pattern on the spatial distributions of Ephemeroptera nymphs in different streams and rivers from Suiá-Miçú Basin, MT, and how the streams are classifying according to the species composition. Were sample 12 streams and rivers, in three periods of the year. Were collected 1,356 individuals, distributed in seven families, 31 genus and 42 species and/or morphospecies. The most abundant locals were semi-lentics and with few shaded suggering that most light in the system offer, allochthonous material and autochthonous material like food resources. The greater estimates richness was found in lotic places, emphasizing that the Ephemeroptera presents greater richness in these places, once water current is essential for organic matter transporting. So much in the grouping analysis (TWINSPAM) as in the ordination (DCA) was observed the separation of lotic and semi-lentic environments as for species composition. It had a gradient in the composition similarity of lotic and small streams for lotic and big stream and for last, semi-lentics. The results of this study show that the physic structure of aquatic environments affect species composition. In that way, retreat of riparian vegetation and streams dam up can take significant losses in the diversity.


O objetivo deste trabalho foi responder se existe padrão na distribuição espacial das ninfas de Ephemeroptera em diferentes córregos e rios da bacia do Rio Suiá-Miçú, MT, e como os córregos estudados estão classificados de acordo com a composição de espécies. Na coleta foram amostrados 12 córregos e rios, em três períodos do ano. Foram coletados 1356 indivíduos, distribuídos em sete famílias, 31 gêneros e 42 espécies e/ou morfoespécies. Os locais mais abundantes foram ambientes semi-lênticos, com pouco sombreamento no leito, sugerindo que a maior entrada de luz disporia, além do material alóctone, material autóctone como fonte de alimento. A maior riqueza de espécie e/ou morfoespécie, estimada, foi em ambientes lóticos enfatizando que os Ephemeroptera apresentam maior riqueza nestes locais uma vez que a correnteza é essencial para transportar a matéria orgânica particulada. Tanto na análise de agrupamento (TWINSPAM) como na ordenação (DCA) observou-se a separação entre ambientes lóticos e semi-lênticos quanto a composição de espécies. Percebeu-se um gradiente na similaridade de composição dos ambientes lóticos de pequeno porte para ambientes lóticos de grande porte e, por fim, os semi-lênticos. Os resultados deste estudo demonstram que a estrutura física dos ambientes aquáticos afeta a composição de espécies. Dessa forma, a retirada das matas ciliares e o represamento dos córregos podem levar à perdas significativas na diversidade.
