ABSTRACT

Magnetic semiconductors EuPrCuSe3 and EuNdCuSe3 were obtained by using the halide flux method. Their crystal structures and magnetic properties were studied and discussed. Optical properties of the obtained selenides were studied by the means of diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, which revealed the values of 1.92/1.97 and 0.90/0.94 eV for the direct and indirect band gaps of Ln = Nd/Pr, respectively. The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the obtained compounds were additionally studied with spin-polarized density functional theory calculations, wherein both systems were found to be two new examples of semiconducting quaternary selenides with disperse conduction bands of Nd/Pr 5d character. The modeling showed that various magnetic orderings in the systems have subtle influences on the alignments/overlaps between the Se/Cu, Eu, and Pr/Nd bands, and that the spin-state energetics are very dependent upon the treatment of electron correlation, but a distinguishing feature in the case of ferromagnetic coupling is that the spin density on the Se atoms is maximized. Overall, the calculations are in good agreement with the experimental characterization of ferromagnetism in the bulk crystals, wherein the ferromagnetic transition occurs at temperatures of about 2.5 K for EuPrCuSe3 and about 3 K for EuNdCuSe3.

ABSTRACT

In this work, we report on the synthesis of a novel zinc(II) coordination compound [ZnL2] (1), which was readily obtained from the reaction of Zn(OAc)·2H2O and N'-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)nicotinohydrazide (HL) in methanol. Recrystallization of 1 from dimethylformamide under ambient conditions allowed to produce yellow block-like crystals of 1·H2O. Complex 1·H2O was characterized by FT-IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy, while its optical properties were studied by UV-vis and spectrofluorimetry in methanol. The crystal structure of the title complex was revealed by single crystal X-ray diffraction and further explored in detail by the Hirshfeld surface analysis. Theoretical investigations based on the DFT calculations have also been applied to show the electronic properties of complex 1. The antitumor activities of the parent ligand HL and complex 1 were studied using Dalton's lymphoma malignant cancer model. Both compounds were found to induce concentration-dependent cytotoxicity and apoptotic cell death, leading to a decrease in cell viability, body weight, and tumor volume in mice with the superior activity of complex 1 over HL. Mice treated with complex 1 demonstrated an increase in life span with a survival period of 23 days. Finally, using a molecular docking approach, we have probed complex 1 to inhibit the recombinant mouse tumor-necrosis factor alpha (mTNF).

ABSTRACT

We report two complexes [Cu(LI)2] (1) and [Cu(LII)2] (2) (HLI = N-cyclohexyl-3-methoxysalicylideneimine, HLII = N-cyclohexyl-3-ethoxysalicylideneimine). The ligands in both complexes are trans-1,5-N,O-coordinated, yielding a square planar CuN2O2 coordination core. The molecule of 1 is planar with two cyclohexyl groups oriented to the opposite sites of the planar part of a molecule, while the molecule of 2 is significantly bent with two cyclohexyl groups oriented to the same convex site of a molecule. It was established that both complexes in MeOH absorb in the UV region due to intraligand transitions and LMCT. Furthermore, the UV-vis spectra of both complexes revealed two low intense shoulders in the visible region at about 460 and 520 nm, which were attributed to d-d transitions. Both complexes were predicted to belong to a fourth class of toxicity with the negative BBB property and positive gastrointestinal absorption property. According to the molecular docking analysis results, both complexes are active against all the applied SARS-CoV-2 proteins with the best binding affinity with Nsp 14 (N7-MTase), PLpro and Mpro. The obtained docking scores of complexes are either comparable to or even higher than those of the initial ligands. Complex 1 was found to be more efficient upon interaction with the applied proteins in comparison to complex 2. Ligand efficiency scores for the initial ligands, 1 and 2 were also revealed.

ABSTRACT

We report synthesis of a novel 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinazoline derivative, named 2-(6,8-dibromo-3-(4-hydroxycyclohexyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinazolin-2-yl)phenol (1), which was obtained from the hydrochloride of 4-((2-amino-3,5-dibromobenzyl)amino)cyclohexan-1-ol (ambroxol hydrochloride) and salicylaldehyde in EtOH. The resulting compound was produced in the form of colorless crystals of the composition 1∙0.5EtOH. The formation of the single product was confirmed by the IR and 1H spectroscopy, single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, and elemental analysis. The molecule of 1 contains a chiral tertiary carbon of the 1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine fragment and the crystal structure of 1∙0.5EtOH is a racemate. Optical properties of 1∙0.5EtOH were revealed by UV-vis spectroscopy in MeOH and it was established that the compound absorbs exclusively in the UV region up to about 350 nm. 1∙0.5EtOH in MeOH exhibits dual emission and the emission spectra contains bands at about 340 and 446 nm upon excitation at 300 and 360 nm, respectively. The DFT calculations were performed to verify the structure as well as electronic and optical properties of 1. ADMET properties of the R-isomer of 1 were evaluated using the SwissADME, BOILED-Egg, and ProTox-II tools. As evidenced from the blue dot position in the BOILED-Egg plot, both human blood-brain barrier penetration and gastrointestinal absorption properties are positive with the positive PGP effect on the molecule. Molecular docking was applied to examine the influence of the structures of both R-isomer and S-isomer of 1 on a series of the SARS-CoV-2 proteins. According to the docking analysis results, both isomers of 1 were found to be active against all the applied SARS-CoV-2 proteins with the best binding affinities with Papain-like protease (PLpro) and nonstructural protein 3 (Nsp3_range 207-379-AMP). Ligand efficiency scores for both isomers of 1 inside the binding sites of the applied proteins were also revealed and compared with the initial ligands. Molecular dynamics simulations were also applied to evaluate the stability of complexes of both isomers with Papain-like protease (PLpro) and nonstructural protein 3 (Nsp3_range 207-379-AMP). The complex of the S-isomer with Papain-like protease (PLpro) was found to be highly unstable, while the other complexes are stable.

ABSTRACT

We report detailed computational studies of betulin - a pentacyclic naturally occuring triterpene, which is a precursor for a broad family of biologically active derivatives. The structure, electronic, and optical properties of betulin were studied by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations in gas phase. The reactivity and the reactive centers of betulin were revealed through its global reactivity descriptors and molecular electrostatic potential (MEP). The DFT calculations were also applied to probe betulin as a potential corrosion inhibitor for some important metals used in implants. Electron charge transfer from the molecule of betulin to the surface of all the examined metals (Ti, Fe, Zr, Co, Cu, Cr, Ni, Mn, Mo, Zn, Al, W, Ag, Au) was revealed, of which the best results were obtained for Ni, Au and Co. Bioavailability, druggability as well as absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity (ADMET) properties of betulin were evaluated using the SwissADME, BOILED-Egg and ProTox-II tools. Molecular docking was applied to examine the influence of the title compound on a series of the SARS-CoV-2 proteins as well as one of the monkeypox proteins. It was established that betulin is active against all the applied proteins with the best binding affinity with papain-like protease (PLpro) and spike protein (native) of SARS-CoV-2. The title compound is also active against the studied monkeypox protein. Interaction of betulin with papain-like protease (PLpro) was studied using molecular dynamics simulations.

ABSTRACT

We report on the novel heterometallic quaternary sulfides SrLnCuS3 (Ln = La, Nd, Tm), obtained as both single crystals and powdered samples. The structures of both the single crystal and powdered samples of SrLaCuS3 and SrNdCuS3 belong to the orthorhombic space group Pnma but are of different structural types, while both samples of SrTmCuS3 crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Cmcm with the structural type KZrCuS3. Three-dimensional crystal structures of SrLaCuS3 and SrNdCuS3 are formed from the (Sr/Ln)S7 capped trigonal prisms and CuS4 tetrahedra. In SrLaCuS3, alternating 2D layers are stacked, while the main backbone of the structure of SrNdCuS3 is a polymeric 3D framework [(Sr/Ln)S7]n, strengthened by 1D polymeric chains (CuS4)n with 1D channels, filled by the other Sr2+/Ln3+ cations, which, in turn, form 1D dimeric ribbons. A 3D crystal structure of SrTmCuS3 is constructed from the SrS6 trigonal prisms, TmS6 octahedra and CuS4 tetrahedra. The latter two polyhedra are packed together into 2D layers, which are separated by 1D chains (SrS6)n and 1D free channels. In both crystal structures of SrLaCuS3 obtained in this work, the crystallographic positions of strontium and lanthanum were partially mixed, while only in the structure of SrNdCuS3, solved from the powder X-ray diffraction data, were the crystallographic positions of strontium and neodymium partially mixed. Band gaps of SrLnCuS3 (Ln = La, Nd, Tm) were found to be 1.86, 1.94 and 2.57 eV, respectively. Both SrNdCuS3 and SrTmCuS3 were found to be paramagnetic at 20-300 K, with the experimental magnetic characteristics being in good agreement with the corresponding calculated parameters.

ABSTRACT

A new PbII coordination complex [PbL(OAc)], which was readily synthesized from a mixture of Pb(OAc)2·3H2O and 1-(pyridin-2-yl)benzylidene-4-phenylthiosemicarbazide (HL) is reported. The crystal structure analysis of [PbL(OAc)] showed that the PbII cation is N,N',S-chelated by the tridentate pincer-type ligand L and by the oxygen atoms of the acetate anion. In addition, the metal centre forms Pb...O and Pb...S tetrel bonds with an adjacent complex molecule, yielding a 1D zigzag polymeric chain, which is reinforced by N-H...O hydrogen bonds and π...π interactions. These chains are interlinked by C-H...py non-covalent interactions, realized between one of the acetate hydrogen atoms and the pyridine rings. According to the Hirshfeld surface analysis, the crystal packing is mainly characterized by intermolecular H...H, H...C and H...O contacts, followed by H...N, H...S, C...C, C...N, Pb...H, Pb...O and Pb...S contacts. The FTIR and 1H NMR spectra of [PbL(OAc)] testify to the deprotonation of the parent ligand HL, while the acetate ligand exhibits an anisobidentate coordination mode as established by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction and FTIR spectroscopy. Lastly, theoretical calculations at the PBE0-D3/def2-TZVP level of theory have been used to analyze and characterize the Pb...O and Pb...S tetrel bonds observed in the crystal of [PbL(OAc)], using a combination of QTAIM (Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules) and NCIPlot (Non-Covalent Interaction Plot) computational tools.

ABSTRACT

In this work, we report on the synthesis, in-depth crystal structure studies as well as optical and magnetic properties of newly synthesized heterometallic quaternary selenides of the Eu+2Ln+3Cu+1Se3 composition. Crystal structures of the obtained compounds were refined by the derivative difference minimization (DDM) method from the powder X-ray diffraction data. The structures are found to belong to orthorhombic space groups Pnma (structure type Ba2MnS3 for EuLaCuSe3 and structure type Eu2CuS3 for EuLnCuSe3, where Ln = Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Y) and Cmcm (structure type KZrCuS3 for EuLnCuSe3, where Ln = Tm, Yb and Lu). Space groups Pnma and Cmcm were delimited based on the tolerance factor t', and vibrational spectroscopy additionally confirmed the formation of three structural types. With a decrease in the ionic radius of Ln3+ in the reported structures, the distortion of the (LnCuSe3) layers decreases, and a gradual formation of the more symmetric structure occurs in the sequence Ba2MnS3 → Eu2CuS3 → KZrCuS3. According to magnetic studies, compounds EuLnCuSe3 (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho and Tm) each exhibit ferrimagnetic properties with transition temperatures ranging from 4.7 to 6.3 K. A negative magnetization effect is observed for compound EuHoCuSe3 at temperatures below 4.8 K. The magnetic properties of the discussed selenides and isostructural sulfides were compared. The direct optical band gaps for EuLnCuSe3, subtracted from the corresponding diffuse reflectance spectra, were found to be 1.87-2.09 eV. Deviation between experimental and calculated band gaps is ascribed to lower d states of Eu2+ in the crystal field of EuLnCuSe3, while anomalous narrowing of the band gap of EuYbCuSe3 is explained by the low-lying charge-transfer state. Ab initio calculations of the crystal structures, elastic properties and phonon spectra of the reported compounds were performed.

ABSTRACT

In this work, we report in-depth computational studies of three plausible tautomeric forms, generated through the migration of two acidic protons of the N4-hydroxylcytosine fragment, of molnupiravir, which is emerging as an efficient drug to treat COVID-19. The DFT calculations were performed to verify the structure of these tautomers, as well as their electronic and optical properties. Molecular docking was applied to examine the influence of the structures of the keto-oxime, keto-hydroxylamine and hydroxyl-oxime tautomers on a series of the SARS-CoV-2 proteins. These tautomers exhibited the best affinity behavior (-9.90, -7.90, and -9.30 kcal/mol, respectively) towards RdRp-RTR and Nonstructural protein 3 (nsp3_range 207-379-MES).

ABSTRACT

We report structural and computational studies of three α-aminophosphonates 4-XC6H4-NH-CH(4-BrC6H4)-P(O)(OiPr)2, namely diisopropyl((4-bromophenyl)(phenylamino)methyl)phosphonate (X = H, 1), diisopropyl((4-bromophenyl)((4-bromophenyl)amino)methyl)phosphonate (X = Br, 2) and diisopropyl((4-bromophenyl)((4-methoxyphenyl)amino)methyl)phosphonate (X = MeO, 3). The structures of 1-3 were fully confirmed by means of the 31P{1H} and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Crystal structures of 2 and 3 are isostructural and each contain two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit cell. Energy frameworks have been calculated to analyze the overall crystal packing of 1-3. The DFT calculations were performed to verify the structures of 1-3 as well as their electronic and optical properties. Molecular docking was applied to examine the influence of both the (S)- and (R)-enantiomers of 1-3 on a series of the SARS-CoV-2 proteins.

ABSTRACT

In this work we report on the antitumor properties of a series of pincer-type metallocomplexes [Hg2(HL-keto)Cl4]n (1), [Hg(HL-keto)I2] (2) and [Mn(HL-zwitterion)Cl2]∙MeOH (3∙MeOH), derived from N'-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)isonicotinohydrazide (HL) and corresponding metal salts. The Hg(II) and Mn(II) salts are chelated by the keto (HL-keto) or zwitterionic (HL-zwitterion) form of HL, respectively. The cytotoxic effects of these compounds have been accessed against lung adenocarcinoma (A549) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2 and Huh7) cell lines. Complexes 1 and 2 were found to be most efficient against the cell line Huh7 with IC50 value of 2.56 and 9.90 µM, respectively, while they exhibit moderate activity towards cell lines A549 and HepG2, as evidenced from IC50 values in the range 27.98-56.99 µM. Complex 3∙MeOH is less efficient towards all the three cell lines with relatively high IC50 values. The mechanisms of the metallocomplexes killing the aforementioned cells were elucidated by flow cytometry, colony formation and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of apoptosis related expression of the genes. The results of the cytotoxic effects and antitumor activity on different cell lines are affected by the metal nature and the presence of the coordinated halide.

ABSTRACT

In this work, we report solvent-induced complexation properties of a new N2S2 tetradentate bis-thiosemicarbazone ligand (H2LI), prepared by the condensation of 4-phenylthiosemicarbazide with bis-aldehyde, namely 2,2'-(ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy)dibenzaldehyde, towards nickel(II). Using ethanol as a reaction medium allowed the isolation of a discrete mononuclear homoleptic complex [NiLI] (1), for which its crystal structure contains three independent molecules, namely 1-I, 1-II, and 1-III, in the asymmetric unit. The doubly deprotonated ligand LI in the structure of 1 is coordinated in a cis-manner through the azomethine nitrogen atoms and the thiocarbonyl sulfur atoms. The coordination geometry around metal centers in all the three crystallographically independent molecules of 1 is best described as the seesaw structure. Interestingly, using methanol as a reaction medium in the same synthesis allowed for the isolation of a discrete mononuclear homoleptic complex [Ni(LII)2] (2), where LII is a monodeprotonated ligand 2-(2-(2-(2-(dimethoxymethyl)phenoxy)ethoxy)benzylidene)-N-phenylhydrazine-1-carbothioamide (HLII). The ligand LII was formed in situ from the reaction of LI with methanol upon coordination to the metal center under synthetic conditions. In the structure of 2, two ligands LII are coordinated in a trans-manner through the azomethine nitrogen atom and the thiocarbonyl sulfur atom, also yielding a seesaw coordination geometry around the metal center. The charge and energy decomposition scheme ETS-NOCV allows for the conclusion that both structures are stabilized by a bunch of London dispersion-driven intermolecular interactions, including predominantly N-H∙∙∙S and N-H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonds in 1 and 2, respectively; they are further augmented by less typical C-H∙∙∙X (where X = S, N, O, π), CH∙∙∙HC, π∙∙∙π stacking and the most striking, attractive long-range intermolecular C-H∙∙∙Ni preagostic interactions. The latter are found to be determined by both stabilizing Coulomb forces and an exchange-correlation contribution as revealed by the IQA energy decomposition scheme. Interestingly, the analogous long-range C-H∙∙∙S interactions are characterized by a repulsive Coulomb contribution and the prevailing attractive exchange-correlation constituent. The electron density of the delocalized bonds (EDDB) method shows that the nickel(II) atom shares only ~0.8|e| due to the σ-conjugation with the adjacent in-plane atoms, demonstrating a very weak σ-metalloaromatic character.

ABSTRACT

In this work we report solvatochromic and luminescent properties of ethyl N-salicylideneglycinate (1), ethyl N-(5-methoxysalicylidene)glycinate (2), ethyl N-(5-bromosalicylidene)glycinate (3), and ethyl N-(5-nitrosalicylidene)glycinate (4) dyes. 1-4 correspond to a class of N-salicylidene aniline derivatives, whose photophysical properties are dictated by the intramolecular proton transfer between the OH-function and the imine N-atom, affording tautomerization between the enol-imine and keto-enamine forms. Photophysical properties of 1-4 were studied in different pure non-polar and (a)protic polar solvents as well as upon gradual addition of NEt3, NaOH, and CH3SO3H. The DFT calculations were performed to verify the structures of 1-4 as well as their electronic and optical properties.

ABSTRACT

This work reports on synthesis and extensive experimental and theoretical investigations on photophysical, structural and thermal properties of the NiII and CuII discrete mononuclear homoleptic complexes [Ni(L I,II)2] and [Cu(L I,II)2] fabricated from the Schiff base dyes o-HOC6H4-CH=N-cyclo-C6H11 (HL I) and o-HOC10H6-CH=N-cyclo-C6H11 (HL II), containing the sterically crowding cyclo-hexyl units. The six-membered metallocycles adopt a clearly defined envelope conformation in [Ni(L II)2], while they are much more planar in the structures of [Ni(L I)2] and [Cu(L I,II)2]. It has been demonstrated by in-depth bonding analyses based on the ETS-NOCV and Interacting Quantum Atoms energy-decomposition schemes that application of the bulky substituents, containing several C-H groups, has led to the formation of a set of classical and unintuitive intra- and inter-molecular interactions. All together they are responsible for the high stability of [Ni(L I,II)2] and [Cu(L I,II)2]. More specifically, London dispersion dominated intramolecular C-H⋯O, C-H⋯N and C-H⋯H-C hydrogen bonds are recognized and, importantly, the attractive, chiefly the Coulomb driven, preagostic (not repulsive anagostic) C-H⋯Ni/Cu interactions have been discovered despite their relatively long distances (∼2.8-3.1 Å). All the complexes are further stabilized by the extremely efficient intermolecular C-H⋯π(benzene) and C-H⋯π(chelate) interactions, where both the charge-delocalization and London dispersion constituents appear to be crucial for the crystal packing of the obtained complexes. All the complexes were found to be photoluminescent in CH2Cl2, with [Cu(L II)2] exhibiting the most pronounced emission - the time-dependent density-functional-theory computations revealed that it is mostly caused by metal-to-ligand charge-transfer transitions.

ABSTRACT

A new coordination polymer [Hg(LI)I]n (1) and a new discrete coordination complex [Hg(HLII)I2] (2) are synthesized and X-ray characterized. The existence of positive π-holes at the spodium atoms in both compounds is evidenced by DFT calculations. In 1, a Hg-S semicoordination bond and a HgI spodium bond are formed at opposite sides of the π-hole. In 2, two different HgI spodium bonds are formed at both sides of the π-hole. This is the first study describing structure-guiding π-hole spodium bonding.
