443 medical psychiatric charts were reviewed to determine the frequency with which psychiatrists formulated physical diagnoses in DSM-III Axis III in adult patients and conducted a physical exam. This data was then related to the psychiatric classification employed and the use of a multiaxial diagnosis approach. It was found that 14 per cent of the patients received a physical diagnosis and that 40.2 per cent underwent a physical exam; furthermore, it was found an association of these variables with the classification used and the utilization of a multiaxial approach. Finally the authors comment on the need to improve the way the mental health system is dealing with physical disorders matters.
