ABSTRACT

Purpose To compare the effectiveness of sunflower oil and silicone-based spray used to remove medical adhesives from the orogastric catheter in preventing the skin injury of premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit. METHODS: This randomized controlled experimental study was conducted on premature infants, born between 32 and 36 weeks, hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit located in the city center of the Black Sea region. There were 86 participants in the study; 43 were in the control group (silicone-based spray), and 43 were in the intervention group (sunflower oil). The "Neonatal Skin Condition Score Scale" evaluated premature infants' skin. RESULTS: Mean skin condition score of premature infants for whom silicone-based adhesive remover spray was applied was 3.63 ± 0.78, whereas the mean skin condition score measured three hours later was 3.17 ± 0.37. Mean skin condition score of premature infants for whom sunflower oil was applied as a medical adhesive remover was 3.40 ± 0.62, whereas the mean skin condition score measured three hours later was 3.07 ± 0.25. No statistically significant difference was determined between the mean skin condition scores of premature infants in both groups evaluated immediately after removing the medical adhesive and 3 h there after (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: There is no difference between the skin condition of premature infants for whom silicone-based medical adhesive remover spray is used and the skin condition of premature infants for whom sunflower oil is used to remove the orogastric tube adhesive. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Pediatric nurses should use medical supplies suitable for the skin condition of premature infants and should frequently evaluate the baby's skin condition. Since silicone-based adhesive remover sprays have a risk of toxicity by being absorbed by the skin, it is recommended to use herbal, cost-effective, non-toxic products. ABSTRACT

A 60-year-old woman with a past medical history of branch retinal vein occlusion presented with decreased vision and metamorphopsia in her left eye. A fundus examination revealed a tortuous retinal vein with a few retinal hemorrhages in the inferotemporal quadrant. Optical coherence tomography revealed a partially separated posterior vitreous membrane pulling up the fovea. The patient refused surgical treatment so intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (4 mg/0.1 mL) was administered. The patient reported resolution of symptoms in her left eye following this treatment, but her visual acuity did not show any improvement. Optical coherence tomography scanning revealed a complete detachment of the posterior hyaloid with release of the vitreomacular traction. In patients with vitreomacular traction and branch retinal vein occlusion, the combination of the possible vitreous liquefaction and mechanical increase of vitreous volume caused by an intravitreal injection with a degree of reduction in retinal thickness may play a role in the resolution of vitreomacular traction.

ABSTRACT

Cornea plana is a rare disease in which the cornea is flattened with a low refractive power. In addition to these features, hypermetropia, deep central corneal opacities, hazy corneal limbus, peripheral scleralization of the cornea and early arcus senilis can also be seen. Closed-angle glaucoma may occur as a result of shallow anterior chamber and narrow angle; however, open-angle glaucoma has also been reported in these patients. Measuring the real intraocular pressure (IOP) value of such eyes is difficult since tonometers are affected by corneal curvature. Therefore, the diagnosis of glaucoma may be delayed for a long time. In this case report we aimed to present a case of cornea plana with early open-angle glaucoma and to investigate which tonometer was appropriate for measuring the correct IOP value in such eyes.

ABSTRACT

A case of intrahepatic arteriovenous malformation connected with umbilical, hepatic, portal, and arterial systems in a fetus diagnosed at 36 weeks of gestation is presented. Prenatal color Doppler ultrasonography in the fetal liver demonstrated complicated vascular connections fed by arterial and portal branches. Postnatal color Doppler, power Doppler, 3D power Doppler, abdominal multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), and angiography CT verified the prenatal diagnoses. Extended right hepatectomy was performed successfully on postnatal day 19.
