ABSTRACT

The required coefficient of friction (RCOF) is frequently reported in the literature as an indicator of slip propensity, a consequence of the collisional aspect of legged locomotion. Little is known about the RCOF in pathological gait. Therefore, this study aimed to quantify the RCOF in subjects with Parkinson's disease (PD) and freezing of gait (FOG) during the OFF-pharma phase, and to investigate the interplay between RCOF parameters and ankle kinematic and kinetic gait variables. Fourteen subjects with PD and 14 healthy age-matched subjects were instructed to walk barefoot at self-selected speed over a force platform. The RCOF curve was obtained as the ratio between the tangential and vertical ground reaction forces. Then, the following discrete variables were identified: P1COF (the peak at the loading response phase), V1COF (the valley at midstance phase) and P2COF (the peak at push-off phase). Stepwise multiple regressions were applied to observe the influence of the gait speed and ankle kinematic and kinetic gait variables on RCOF variables. In subjects with PD and FOG the gait speed is a predictor of the RCOF in the loading response phase; plantarflexion and the plantarflexion moment are strong predictors of the RCOF in midstance; finally, push-off power is a predictor of RCOF increasing in the push-off phase. These results characterized the biomechanical strategies adopted by subjects with PD and FOG during gait in order to avoid falls.

ABSTRACT

Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) and freezing of gait (FOG) have impaired postural control. Recent studies using foot sensory stimulation delivered by means of automated mechanical peripheral stimulation (AMPS) have demonstrated improvements of gait in individuals with PD. This study aimed to investigate the effects of AMPS on postural control in individuals with PD and FOG. Thirty-three subjects participated in this randomized controlled trial. Participants were allocated to two groups: AMPS and AMPS SHAM. Subjects underwent eight sessions of real (AMPS) or placebo AMPS (AMPS SHAM) once every three/four days. Postural control was assessed by means of posturography before the first and after the eighth session of treatment. We did not find positive effects of AMPS on center of pressure parameters. Thus, it seems that AMPS has no positive effect in terms of improving static postural control in individuals with PD and FOG.

ABSTRACT

Resumen La combinación de la actividad metabólica de cepas bacterianas potencializa la actividad antimicrobiana contra microorganismos patógenos, en comparación con la actividad que pueden presentar las cepas microbianas en forma individual. La formulación mixta de bacterias acido lácticas ha sido estudiada para la producción de preparados probióticos con actividad antimicrobiana contra patógenos. Listeria monocytogenes es considerado un microorganismo patógeno para el hombre y animales, causando principalmente, la enfermedad conocida como listeriosis. Se evaluó la actividad antimicrobiana de una formulación mixta de Lactobacillus brevis y Weisella cibaria frente a Listeria monocytogenes. L. brevis y W. cibaria se reprodujeron por fermentaciones en discontinuo durante 48 horas. Se midió la cinética de la actividad antimicrobiana contra L. monocytogenes en los siguientes tiempos de fermentación, 0, 1, 2, 6, 12, 24 y 48 horas. En cada tiempo, la actividad antimicrobiana de la mezcla de cepas se comparó con la actividad antimicrobiana de las cepas en forma individual. La actividad antimicrobiana se midió mediante el diámetro de Feret, utilizando un software de evaluación de imágenes. Se encontró que la actividad antimicrobiana de la mezcla de cepas contra L. monocytogenes fue estable desde la segunda hora de fermentación hasta las 48 horas. A partir de 18 horas de fermentación la mezcla de cepas presentó actividad antimicrobiana superior, comparada con las cepas individuales. Los resultados indican que la formulación mixta de L. brevis y W. cibaria podría ser una opción biotecnológica para el desarrollo de antimicrobianos naturales para el control y prevención de L. monocytogenes.


Abstract The combination of the metabolic activity of bacterial strains potentiates the antimicrobial activity against pathogenic microorganisms, in comparison with the activity that the microbial strains can present individually. The mixed formulation of lactic acid bacteria has been studied to the production of probiotic preparations with antimicrobial activity against pathogens. Listeria monocytogenes is considered a pathogenic microorganism for man and animals, causing the disease known as listeriosis. The antimicrobial activity of a mixed formulation of Lactobacillus brevis and Weisella cibaria was evaluated against Listeria monocytogenes. L. brevis and W. cibaria were reproduced by discontinuous fermentations for 48 hours. The kinetics of antimicrobial activity against L. monocytogenes were measured at the next fermentation times, 0, 1, 2, 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours. At each time, the antimicrobial activity of the mixed formulation was compared with the antimicrobial activity of the strains individually. The antimicrobial activity was measured by Feret's diameter, using image evaluation software. It was found that the antimicrobial activity of the mixed formulation against L. monocytogenes was stable from the second hour of fermentation to 48 hours of fermentation. After 18 hours of fermentation the mixed formulation presented superior antimicrobial activity, compared to the individual strains. The results indicate that the mixed formulation of L. brevis and W. cibaria could be a biotechnological option for the development of natural antimicrobials for the control and prevention of L. monocytogenes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Population ageing and changes in the epidemiological profile of neurological pathologies has resulted in an increase in patients with disabilities. Rehabilitation strategies such as Modified Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMTm) play a key role in treating patients with neurologic deficiencies and motor impairments. This intervention is intended to mitigate disability, promote maximum functional independence, and optimize social and economic participation of patients with upper extremity weakness. Our goal was to assess the recovery of functional independence in patients after a stroke using to CIMTm. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Thirty-six subjects who had suffered stroke took part in a randomised clinical trial. The treatment was applied through either collective or individual modalities for three hours per day for a period of ten days. Participant's functional independence was assessed using the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) scale at the before and after of the intervention. RESULTS: An analysis of covariance carried out on the pre-test assessments indicates that the dependent variable presents significant differences (F1.31 = 42.78, p < 0.001, η2p = 0.72) in favour of the collective intervention modality. CONCLUSION: Both modalities of CIMTm intervention promote functional independence. However, the greatest improvements were observed in participants in the collective modality. Improvements in functional independence pursue a reduction in learned non-use behaviours through greater use of the paretic upper extremity in everyday activities.

ABSTRACT

A systematic revision of the ectoparasites (lice) of the hominids and ceboids supports the Trogloditian hypothesis, according to which the genus Homo is the sister of Pan, and the genus Gorilla the sister group of both. The phylogenetic analysis of this matrix derived from the study of primate lice shows an C.I. of 0.71 for the Trogloditian hypothesis including the ceboids in the analysis.

ABSTRACT

The genera Pediculus and Pthirus were studied cladistically, although the genus Pedicinus was also taken into account. Morphological characters from the literature, and some established through direct study were analyzed. Using five methods of cladistic analysis, one most parsimonious tree with a c.i. = 0.84 and a length of 38 was obtained ((Pedicinus)+(Paenipediculus+(Parapediculus+(Pedicu lus humanus capitis+Pediculus humanus humanus). A novelty of this study is the inclusion of the subgenus.
