ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: A levator dissection-resection technique (LDR) in which the levator is dissected free from all fibrous attachments including Whitnall's ligament was compared to two commonly used frontalis-based procedures in the management of congenital ptosis with poor levator function. METHODS: Thirty patients having congenital ptosis with poor levator function were randomized to one of the three surgical groups (ten patients for each group), namely, frontalis sling (FS), frontalis advancement flap (FAF), and (LDR) technique. Marginal reflex distance-one (MRD-1), levator function, symmetry in different levels of vertical gaze, lagophthalmos, and any other surgical complications were assessed 6 months following the intervention. RESULTS: Patients in the three groups achieved statistically significant improvement in MRD-1 in the primary position of gaze (p = 0.001 for FS, 0.003 for FAF, 0.001 for LDR). Patients who underwent a frontalis-based procedure acquired an additional ability to elevate the upper eyelid by using their eyebrows. Patients who underwent LDR technique have acquired an additional mean of 5.79 ± 1 mm improvement in levator function with better symmetry during up and down gaze in unilateral cases. Patients from all groups had an equal degree of lagophthalmos with forced eyelid closure, and during sleep. CONCLUSION: Patients with ptosis and poor levator function who were managed with LDR technique achieved a similar degree of eyelid elevation in the primary gaze to that of frontalis-based procedures, acquired additional levator function, achieved more symmetry in up and down gaze in unilateral cases, and had no additional risk to the cornea.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Welders are more likely to develop neurobehavioral disorders because of their exposure to neurotoxic metals such as manganese. This study aimed to measure the neurobehavioral performance of welders occupationally exposed to manganese at welding enterprises and its relationship with the workplace environment. METHODS: It is a comparative cross-sectional study carried out on 130 welders working at 50 welding enterprises in Menoufia governorate, Egypt, compared to 130 non-occupationally exposed controls. RESULTS: It was found that the environments of the studied welding enterprises had levels of respirable dust, manganese, and total welding fumes that exceeded internationally permissible limits. In addition, the mean blood manganese levels were significantly higher among welders (4.16 ± 0.61) than the controls (1.72 ± 0.41). Welders had a significantly higher prevalence of neurological manifestations and lower performance of neurobehavioral tests. Lower neurobehavioral performance among welders was significantly correlated with increased work duration and blood levels in some tests. CONCLUSION: To lessen the fumes in the breathing zone of workers, it is therefore strongly recommended to regularly wear high-quality personal protective equipment, especially masks, and to ensure proper ventilation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to assess how a concentrated growth factor (CGF) injection affects the rate of orthodontic tooth movement in rabbits. METHODS: This experimental investigation employed a split-mouth configuration. Before orthodontic mesialization of the maxillary first molars, CGF was prepared and administered using submucosal injections on the buccal and palatal sides of the maxillary first molars in one randomly assigned quadrant. The opposite quadrant was used as a control. The study examined four time points:1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks. The measurement of tooth movement was conducted at each follow-up point using a digital caliper. The rabbits were euthanized, and their maxillary segments, specifically the maxillary first molars, were studied histologically to identify any alterations occurring on both the tension and compression sides. RESULTS: Significant tooth movement was observed in the experimental sides versus control sides in the second, third, and fourth week of follow-up periods (p ≤ 0.05). Histologically, on the compression side, the CGF group showed bone resorption and periodontal ligament active reactions from the first week and continued throughout the next three weeks. Also, on the tension side, the CGF group depicted cementoblastic and osteoblastic activities from the first week followed by fibroblastic activities from the second week and all activities continued till the fourth week. CONCLUSIONS: CGF has the potential to effectively enhance orthodontic tooth movement without adverse clinical or histological effects.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the immunogenic profile of a chimeric DNA-based hepatitis C virus (HCV) vaccine candidate encoding the full-length viral core-E1-E2 (HCV-CE) fragment. The vaccine candidate was designed to uniformly express the HCV genotype 4 core-E1-E2 protein. The recombinant HCV-CE protein was bacterially expressed in C41 (DE3) cells, and then BALB/c mice were immunized with different combinations of DNA/DNA or DNA/protein prime/boost immunizations. The proper construction of our vaccine candidate was confirmed by specific amplification of the encoded fragments and basic local alignment search tool (BLAST) results of the nucleotide sequence, which revealed a high degree of similarity with several HCV serotypes/genotypes. The platform for bacterial expression was optimized to maximize the yield of the purified recombinant HCV-CE protein. The recombinant protein showed high specific antigenicity against the sera of HCV-infected patients according to the ELISA and western blot results. The predicted B- and T-cell epitopes showed high antigenic and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) induction potential, in addition to cross-genotype conservation and population coverage. The mice antisera further demonstrated a remarkable ability to capture 100% of the native viral antigens circulating in the sera of HCV patients, with no cross-reactivity detected in control sera. In conclusion, the proposed HCV vaccination strategy demonstrated promising potential regarding its safety, immunogenicity, and population coverage.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Identify the benefits and caveats of combining minimal access approaches to the infratemporal fossa (ITF), such as the endoscopic transnasal, endoscopic transorbital, endoscopic transoral, and endoscopic sublabial transmaxillary approaches to address extensive lesions not amenable to a single approach. The study provides anatomical metrics including area of exposure and degree of surgical freedom. Methods: Five human cadaveric specimens (10 sides) were dissected to expose and methodically analyze the anatomical intricacies of the ITF using the following minimal access approaches: endoscopic transnasal transpterygoid (EETA), endoscopic sublabial transmaxillary, endoscopic transorbital via infraorbital foramen, and endoscopic transoral techniques. Area of exposure at the pterygopalatine fossa and surgical freedom at the ITF were obtained for each approach. Results: The endoscopic sublabial transmaxillary sinus and the combined approach afford a significantly greater exposure than an isolated EETA. The difference in exposure (mean) between the endoscopic sublabial transmaxillary and EETA was 1.62 ± 0.85 cm2 (p < 0.001), and the difference between the combined approach and EETA was 4.25 ± 0.85 cm2 (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Combining minimal access endoscopic approaches to the ITF can provide significantly greater exposure than an isolated EETA; thus, providing enhanced access to address lesions with extensive involvement of the ITF, especially those with superolateral and inferolateral extensions. In addition, some approaches may have an adjunctive role to the resection, such as the endoscopic transoral approach offering the potential for early control of the internal maxillary artery and its branches, some of which may be supplying the tumor in the ITF; or the endoscopic transorbital approach yielding a direct line of sight to the superior ITF and middle cranial fossa. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe a precise description of suture lateralization (SL) technique and evaluate its effectiveness and safety in management of bilateral vocal fold paralysis (BVFP). METHOD: A preclinical cadaveric study followed by application on a case series of BVFP patients. After the preliminary study executed to precisely localize the optimal sites for needle insertion, a prospective interventional study was conducted on 19 subjects presenting with respiratory distress due to BVFP. Data collection included their clinical presentation and a detailed assessment including auditory perceptual assessment, laryngoscopy (rigid or flexible), and video fluoroscopic swallowing study. RESULTS: Widening of the inter-glottic distance at the site of the sutures was statistically significant (P < 0.001). Decannulation was achieved in three out of four tracheotomized patients. The suturing led to a significant difference in loudness, jitter, and harmonic-to-noise ratio (P = 0.042, 0.004, and ≤0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: This study suggests that SL is a feasible and effective technique with low incidence of adverse events and the potential of reversibility. Optimal localization of the suture insertion points translated into less intraoperative manipulation of the cords and shorter operative time.

ABSTRACT

The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system has an indispensable function in the uteroplacental circulation, placental growth, and blood pressure optimization. The angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE) gene is a critical integrator for electrolyte balance, and water retention, along with inhibiting preeclampsia. The main goal of this pertaining study is to assess the contribution of ACE*(Ins/Del) variant with the susceptibility for preeclampsia with focus on the severity of the disease among gestational hypertensive women. This retrospective study included 225 participants [125 PE gestational women, and 100 normotensive healthy controls] matching with age, and geographical region. PE women classified into 82 early-onset PE women, accompanied with 43 late-onset PE women. Additionally, PE women categorized into 59 mild PE women, together with 66 severe PE women. The genotyping and characterization of ACE*(Ins/Del) variant were applied using the PCR technique. Our findings indicated higher frequency of the ACE*(Del/Del) genotype and ACE*(D allele) with elevated risk of preeclampsia compared to normotensive controls under recessive (OR = 2.09, and p-value = 0.007), and allelic (OR = 1.75, and p-value = 0.012) models. In addition, testing logistic regression revealed that the levels of endothelin-1 and malondialdehyde exposed significant difference for the ACE*(Del/Del) genotype among early-onset and late-onset PE women (p-value = 0.024, and 0.23, respectively). Furthermore, carriers of the ACE*(Del/Del) genotype observed statistically significant with lower sodium concentrations among severe PE women (p-value = 0.034). The ACE*(Del/Del) genotype and ACE*(D allele) were associated with increased risk preeclampsia among gestational women. Furthermore, early-onset PE and late-onset PE were correlated with endothelin-1 and malondialdehyde concentrations among Egyptian women.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Lesions located in the floor of the third ventricle are among the most difficult to access in neurosurgery. The neurovascular structures can limit transcranial exposure, whereas tumor extension into the third ventricle can limit visualization and access. The midline transsphenoidal route is an alternative approach to tumor invading the third ventricle if the tumor is localized at its anterior half and a working space between the optic apparatus and the pituitary infundibulum exists. The authors introduce the "infundibulochiasmatic angle," a valuable measurement supporting the feasibility of the translamina terminalis endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) for resection of type IV craniopharyngiomas. OBSERVATIONS: Due to a favorable infundibulochiasmatic angle measurement on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), an endoscopic endonasal transsellar transtubercular approach was performed to resect a type IV craniopharyngioma. At 2-month follow-up, the patient's neurological exam was unremarkable, with improvement in bitemporal hemianopsia. Postoperative MRI confirmed gross-total tumor resection. LESSONS: The infundibulochiasmatic angle is a radiological tool for evaluating the feasibility of EEA when resecting tumors in the anterior half of the third ventricle. Advantages include reduced brain retraction and excellent rates of resection, with minimal postoperative risks of cerebrospinal fluid leakage and permanent pituitary dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Chordomas are rare bone tumors originating from notochord remnants with a predilection for the median axis of the body, primarily in the sacrococcygeal spine, skull base, and cervical spine. This paper presents the first reported case of simultaneous multilevel chordomas with various enhancements. OBSERVATIONS: A 40-year-old woman presented with right-sided otalgia, headache, nasal obstruction, and facial pressure. The patient's head and spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a midline lesion in the clivus, C2, and T1-5 spinal levels. All lesions were T1 isointense and T2 hyperintense, consistent with chordoma. Interestingly, the clivus lesion was enhancing, whereas the C2 lesion was only slightly enhancing, and the rest of the lesions showed no enhancement. The patient underwent endoscopic endonasal transclival approach surgery for the clival lesion, followed by radiation to the surgical bed and the C2 lesion. The remaining lesions were monitored. Follow-up imaging showed stable disease in the C2 lesion and other lower lesions. The patient's severe pain in the posterior cervical spine was managed with cervical fusion, pain management, and physical therapy. LESSONS: This case underscores the importance of comprehensive spinal MRI in patients with chordomas, as multiple concurrent primaries may be present. The article summarizes the fundamental distinctions between ecchordosis physaliphora and chordoma and casts doubt on the capacity to always differentiate them.

ABSTRACT

Tryptophan and tryptophan-based nanomaterials sensors in a solution have been developed to directly evaluate thymine. The determination of thymine has been done via quenching of the fluorescence of tryptophan and tryptophan-based nanomaterials such as graphene (Gr), graphene oxide (GO), gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), gold-silver nanocomposite (Au-Ag NC) in a physiological buffer. As the concentration of thymine rises, the fluorescence of tryptophan and tryptophan/nanomaterials becomes less intense. Trp, Trp/Gr, and tryptophan/(Au-Ag) NC systems' quenching mechanisms were dynamic, but tryptophan /GO and tryptophan/AuNPs' quenching mechanisms were static. The linear dynamic range for the determination of thy by tryptophan and tryptophan /nanomaterials is 10 to 200 µM. The detection limits for tryptophan, tryptophan /Gr, tryptophan /GO, tryptophan /AuNPs, and tryptophan/Au-Ag NC were 3.21, 14.20, 6.35, 4.67and 7.79 Μm, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters for the interaction of the Probes with Thy include the enthalpy (H°) and entropy (S°) change values, were assessed, as well as the binding constant (Ka) of Thy with Trp and Trp-based nanomaterials. A recovery study was conducted utilizing a human serum sample after the addition of the required quantity of the investigational thymine.

ABSTRACT

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a more dangerous form of chronic non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In the current investigation, the influence of citicoline on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced NASH was examined, both alone and in combination with Lactobacillus (probiotic). NASH was induced by feeding HFD (10% sugar, 10% lard stearin, 2% cholesterol, and 0.5% cholic acid) to rats for 13 weeks and received single i.p. injection of streptozotocin (STZ, 30 mg/kg) after 4 weeks. Citicoline was given at two dose levels (250 mg and 500 mg, i.p.) at the beginning of the sixth week, and in combination with an oral suspension of Lactobacillus every day for eight weeks until the study's conclusion. HFD/STZ induced steatohepatitis as shown by histopathological changes, elevated serum liver enzymes, serum hyperlipidemia and hepatic fat accumulation. Moreover, HFD convinced oxidative stress by increased lipid peroxidation marker (MDA) and decreased antioxidant enzymes (GSH and TAC). Upregulation of TLR4/NF-kB and the downstream inflammatory cascade (TNF-α, and IL-6) as well as Pentaraxin, fetuin-B and apoptotic markers (caspase-3 and Bax) were observed. NASH rats also had massive increase in Bacteroides spp., Fusobacterium spp., E. coli, Clostridium spp., Providencia spp., Prevotella interrmedia, and P. gingivalis while remarkable drop in Bifidobacteria spp. and Lactobacillus spp. Co-treatment with citicoline alone and with Lactobacillus improve histopathological NASH outcomes and reversed all of these molecular pathological alterations linked to NASH via upregulating the expression of Nrf2/HO-1 and downregulating TLR4/NF-kB signaling pathways. These results suggest that citicoline and lactobacillus may represent new hepatoprotective strategies against NASH progression.

OBJECTIVES: This manuscript aims to present a novel and successful intervention for intractable aspiration following a supracricoid laryngectomy (SCL) that may avoid the need for total laryngectomy in patients experiencing intractable aspiration after SCL. STUDY DESIGN: This report describes a novel approach to treat intractable aspiration and feeding tube-dependency due to an incomplete posterior apposition of the laryngeal surface of the epiglottis to the arytenoids after a SCL in a 67-year-old man. METHODS: The right and left aryepiglottic folds and the median glossoepiglottic fold were denuded using a CO2 laser. Then, an arytenoepiglottopexy was completed by placing 4-0 Vicryl between the lateral aspect of the epiglottis and arytenoids; thus, approximating these structures. RESULTS: Two weeks after surgery, fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing demonstrated improved closure of the larynx upon swallowing with great upgrading in the Penetration-Aspiration scale (PAS). PAS improved from a 6 to 2, corresponding to, transient penetration for moderately thick liquids and puree solids. He also demonstrated improved secretion management and airway protection. Following a 4-week course of intensive dysphagia therapy, a modified barium swallow revealed a significant improvement in airway protection, with a PAS score of 1 (no airway invasion). CONCLUSIONS: Chronic aspiration is a life-threatening condition that can severely reduce patients' quality of life. Despite the use of current therapeutic approaches, a subset of patients will remain plagued by persistent symptoms. We introduce an innovative, simple, and quick endoscopic technique that offers benefit in controlling aspiration after SCL. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: NA.

BACKGROUND: Silent corticotroph adenomas (SCAs) are the only pituitary adenomas thought to originate from the pars intermedia. This case report presents the rare finding of a multimicrocystic corticotroph macroadenoma displacing the anterior and posterior lobes of the pituitary gland on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This finding supports the hypothesis that silent corticotroph adenomas may originate from the pars intermedia and should be considered in the differential for tumors arising from this location. OBSERVATIONS: A 55-year-old man presented with an episode of confusion and blurred vision. MRI demonstrated separation of the anterior and posterior glands by a solid-cystic lesion located within the pars intermedia that superiorly displaced the optic chiasm. Endocrinologic evaluation was unremarkable. The differential diagnosis included pituitary adenoma, Rathke cleft cyst, and craniopharyngioma. The tumor was confirmed to be an SCA on pathology and was completely removed through the endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach. LESSONS: The case highlights the importance of preoperative screening for subclinical hypercortisolism for tumors arising from this location. Knowledge of a patient's preoperative functional status is critical and dictates their postoperative biochemical assessment to determine remission. The case also illustrates surgical strategies for resecting pars intermedia lesions without injuring the gland.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous rhinorrhea may be the initial manifestation of ecchordosis physaliphora (EP). There are currently 47 published cases of symptomatic EP, with spontaneous rhinorrhea being one of the most prevalent symptoms. The authors report 1 case as a cause of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistula. OBSERVATIONS: A 46-year-old woman presented to the authors' clinic with meningitis secondary to nasal CSF leakage. The computed tomography (CT) scan indicated an imperceptibly thin/dehiscent focus along the posterior wall of the sphenoid air cell's midline. A tumor was identified during endoscopic endonasal CSF repair surgery. EP was diagnosed in the frozen and final pathology. LESSONS: EP should be considered as a potential cause of spontaneous rhinorrhea. This initial clinical manifestation accounts for 35% of symptomatic EP cases. The prepontine and posterior sphenoid sinus wall appear to be the locations with the highest susceptibility. Surgical therapy of the fistula without excision of the lesion may result in insufficient issue resolution and recurrence.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Unilateral inferior hypophyseal artery (IHA) sacrifice is routinely performed during endoscopic endonasal transcavernous interdural posterior clinoidectomy. However, unilateral IHA sacrifice presents the risk of temporary postoperative diabetes insipidus. We present a case demonstrating the feasibility of endoscopic endonasal transcavernous posterior clinoidectomy without IHA sacrifice. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old man presented with progressive weakness of his left oculomotor and abducens nerves. MRI of the brain revealed a small lesion suspicious for hemangioma in the posterior compartment of the left cavernous sinus. Following an endoscopic endonasal transcavernous approach using the interdural peeling technique, an IHA-sparing posterior clinoidectomy was performed to provide access to the tumor in the posterior cavernous sinus. After complete resection, the patient's symptoms improved and a diagnosis of cavernous sinus hemangioma was confirmed by histopathology. CONCLUSION: Unilateral IHA preservation may be performed safely when performing a transcavernous interdural posterior clinoidectomy. IHA preservation can be readily achieved if the artery is redundant, the lesion is small and located in the posterior cavernous sinus, and there is a short posterior clinoid, ultimately avoiding the risk of transient postoperative diabetes insipidus.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide in terms of mortality, and susceptibility is attributed to genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Lymphotoxin alpha (LTA) has a crucial role in communicating the lymphocytes with stromal cells and provoking cytotoxic effects on the cancer cells. There are no reports on the contribution of the LTA (c.179 C>A; p.Thr60Asn; rs1041981) gene polymorphism to HCC susceptibility. The main aim of this study is to investigate the association of LTA (c.179 C>A; p.Thr60Asn; rs1041981) variant with the HCC risk in the Egyptian population. METHODS: This case-control study included 317 participants (111 HCC patients, and 206 healthy controls). The LTA (c.179 C>A; p.Thr60Asn; rs1041981) polymorphism was assessed by tetra-primer amplification refractory mutation system polymerase chain reaction (T-ARMS-PCR) technique. RESULTS: The frequencies of the dominant and recessive models (CA + AA; AA) of the LTA (c.179 C>A; p.Thr60Asn; rs1041981) variant were statistically significant among HCC patients in comparison to controls (p = 0.01; p = 0.007; respectively). The A-allele of LTA (c.179 C>A; p.Thr60Asn; rs1041981) variant was statistically significant in HCC patients in comparison to controls (p ˂ 0.001). CONCLUSION: The LTA (c.179 C>A; p.Thr60Asn; rs1041981) polymorphism was independently associated with an increased risk for hepatocellular carcinoma in the Egyptian population.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental contaminant that can induce deleterious organ effects. Human Cytochrome P450 CYP2C9 enzyme belongs to the essential xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes, producing ROS as a byproduct. Astaxanthin (ATX) is a powerful antioxidant that protects organs and tissues from the damaging effects of oxidative stress caused by various diseases. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study investigated the possible protective impacts of ATX against BPA-induced nephrotoxicity and its underlying mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Kidney tissues were isolated and examined microscopically from control, protected, and unprotected groups of rats to examine the potential protective effect of ATX against nephrotoxicity. Moreover, a molecular dynamic (MD) simulation was conducted to predict the performance of ATX upon binding to the active site of P450 CYP2C9 protein receptor as a potential mechanism of ATX protective effect. RESULTS: Implemented computational methods revealed the possible underlying mechanism of ATX protection; the protective impact of ATX is mediated by inhibiting P450 CYP2C9 through binding to its dimeric state where the RMSF value for apo-protein and ATX-complex system were 5.720.57 and 1.040.41, respectively, implicating the ATX-complex system to have lesser variance in its residues, leading to the prevention of ROS excess production, maintaining the oxidant-antioxidant balance and re-establishing the proper mitochondrial functionality. Furthermore, the experimental methods validated in silico outcomes and revealed that ATX therapy effectively restored the typical histological architecture of pathological kidney tissues. CONCLUSIONS: ATX prevents BPA-induced nephrotoxicity by controlling oxidative imbalance and reversing mitochondrial dysfunction. These outcomes shed new light on the appropriate use of ATX as a treatment or prophylactic agent for these severe conditions.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate anatomic relationships pertinent to the endoscopic multiport approach to the infratemporal fossa (ITF). Discuss advantages and limitations of each individual approach. STUDY DESIGN: Cadaveric study. METHODS: Endoscopic and endoscopic-assisted endonasal transpterygoid, sublabial transmaxillary, endoscopic transorbital, and endoscopic transoral approaches to accessing the ITF were completed in five silicone-injected fresh cadaveric specimens (10 sides) with the assistance of 0, 30, and 450 rods-lens endoscopes. Image guidance was used to confirm and document the anatomical relationships encountered in each approach. RESULTS: The endonasal endoscopic transpterygoid approach provides better visualization and more direct exposure to median structures. Endoscopic-assisted sublabial transmaxillary approach enhances the field of exposure, angle of attack, and ease of instrumentation to the lateral part of the ITF. Endoscopic-assisted transorbital approach via the inferior orbital fissure provided cephalic and anterior access. Endoscopic-assisted transoral approach complements the access to lesions extending inferior to the hard palate or far lateral to the mandibular condyle. CONCLUSIONS: A combination of minimal access infratemporal approaches can provide adequate exposure of the entire ITF while avoiding some of the morbidity associated with open approaches. ABSTRACT

One particularly harmful mycotoxin, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), usually triggers liver toxicity and oxidative stress in both humans and other mammals. Luteolin (LUTN), a popular active phytochemical molecule, exhibits a strong antioxidant potential. The purpose of this investigation was to explore the potential molecular mechanism in rats and determine if LUTN exhibits protective benefits against AFB1-induced hepatotoxicity. Random selection was used to determine the four treatment groups, each consisting of 24 rats (n = 6). Physiological saline was administered to group 1 (CONT); group 2 received LUTN for a dosage of 50-mg/kg BW. AFB1 was administered to group 3 for a dosage of 0.75-mg/kg BW, and AFB1 with LUTN was given to group 4 at the same dosages mentioned in the previous groups. Rats intoxicated with AFB1 alterations of hepatic transaminases, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), displayed periportal mononuclear cell infiltrations, disorganized lobular architecture, and dispersed necrotic cells in their liver tissues. By reducing serum biochemical levels of the hepatic transaminases ALT and AST brought on by AFB1 exposure, our results demonstrated that LUTN treatment considerably restored liver injury. Through lowering the production of malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), as well as by boosting the activity of the antioxidant enzyme catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), LUTN mitigated the oxidative stress brought on by AFB1. Our findings showed that LUTN significantly reversed the liver damage caused by AFB1. When considered as a whole, LUTN may protect the liver from damage brought on by AFB1 by acting as a potential mitigator and may aid in the creation of cutting-edge therapies to treat liver illnesses in humans and/or animals.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to compare the surface morphology alterations, mineral content, and surface roughness of eroded enamel surface versus eroded enamel surface which was preceded by Bioactive Glass 45S5 (BAG45S5) application in both primary and permanent human dentitions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-two primary teeth and fifty-two permanent teeth were selected. Teeth were randomly divided into 4 groups of twenty-six teeth each. Groups A1 and B1 underwent erosion with 1% citric acid, while groups A2 and B2 were subjected to application of BAG45S5 powder followed by the same erosive conditions as A1 and B1. Measurements were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and surface profilometry. They were used to examine the surface morphology alterations, mineral content, and surface roughness, respectively. RESULTS: SEM of enamel which received BAG45S5 showed smoother surface in primary teeth post erosion. EDX analysis showed that enamel exhibited crucial resistance to mineral loss in the group which received BAG45S5 prior to inducing erosion as compared to the induced erosion-only group. This was significant (p < 0.005) in both human dentitions. Erosion-only groups showed significantly less surface roughness in permanent teeth (p < 0.045). A marked decrease in surface roughness was observed in surfaces receiving BAG45S5, primary teeth (p < 0.001), and permanent teeth (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Bioactive Glass 45S5 proved successful against erosive conditions in both primary and permanent teeth with better performance in the permanent teeth so it can be regarded as a means of prevention. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Bioactive Glass 45S5 powder could be used not only to remove stains but also as a prophylactic preventive measure against the multiple episodes of acidic food and beverage consumption in children.
