Photodegradation applied to the treatment of phenol and derived substances catalyzed by TiO2/BiPO4 and biological toxicity analysis.

For this work, a phenol solution model was treated by an advanced oxidation process (AOPs), using the heterogeneous catalyst TiO2/BiPO4 and hydrogen peroxide combined with UVA for 240 min. An annular reactor containing a UVA lamp (80 W) was employed. A central composite rotacional design was developed employing a TiO2/BiPO4 concentration of 87 mg L-1 and a hydrogen peroxide concentration of 1800 mg L-1, being evaluated by the degradation percentage and phenol mineralization percentage as responses; 94.30 and 67.00 % were obtained for the phenol degradation and total organic carbon (TOC) conversion, respectively. The lumped kinetic model (LKM) was applied and a satisfactory profile of the residual fractions of the organic compounds present in the liquid phase as a time function with a determination coefficient (R 2 = 0.9945). The toxicity tests employing microbiological species indicated that the organisms tested for the evaluation of the toxic compounds present in the contaminated samples presented a practical low cost test, rapid execution, and high sensibility as an indicator of the presence of toxic substances in liquid effluents.

A Vertigem Postural Paroxística benigna é uma afecção do sistema vestibular periférico, caracterizada por crise vertiginosa súbita, de curta duração, desencadeada por movimentações cefálicas em diferentes posições. Levando em consideração o grande número de pacientes com essa fisiopatologia, o presente estudo objetivou apresentar uma revisão da literatura sobre esse assunto. O levantamento bibliográfico foi conduzido nas bases de dados LILACS, Medline e SciELO, focando-se nos artigos científicos publicados entre os anos de 2004 e 2014. Verificou-se nesta revisão que estudos sobre a Vertigem Postural Paroxística Benigna foram realizados nos últimos anos, abordando os métodos de avaliação e tratamento. Foi possível observar que o acometimento dos canais laterais ou de mais de um canal, assim como a vertigem postural positiva subjetiva e as orientações ao paciente, precisam ser mais explorados.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo is a disorder of the peripheral vestibular system, characterized by sudden vertigo of short duration, triggered by head movements in different positions. Taking into consideration the large number of patients with this pathophysiology, the present study aimed to present a review of the literature on this subject. The literature survey was conducted in LILACS, Medline and SciELO databases, focusing on the scientific papers published between 2004 and 2014. It was found in this review that studies on Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo have been made in recent years, addressing the methods of evaluation and treatment. It was observed that the onset of side canals or more than one canal, as well as the positive subjective postural vertigo, and instructing the patient, need to be further explored.

El vértigo posicional paroxístico benigno es un trastorno del sistema vestibular periférico, que se caracteriza por crisis vertiginosa súbita, de corta duración, provocada por movimientos de la cabeza en diferentes posiciones. Teniendo en cuenta el gran número de pacientes con esta fisiopatología, el presente estudio tuvo como objetivo presentar una revisión de la literatura sobre este tema. El estudio de la literatura se realizó en las bases de datos LILACS, Medline y SciELO, centrándose en los trabajos científicos publicados entre 2004 y 2014. Se encontró en esta revisión que estudios sobre el Vértigo Posicional Paroxístico Benigno se han hecho en los últimos años, con foco en los métodos de evaluación y tratamiento. Se observó que la acometida de los canales secundarios o de más de un canal, así como el vértigo postural positivo subjetivo, e las instrucciones al paciente, necesitan ser mas explorados.

A influência da oculomotricidade e do reflexo-vestíbulo-ocular na leitura e escrita / The influence of eye movement and the vestibular-ocular reflex in reading and writing

OBJETIVO: verificar se alterações na oculomotricidade e no reflexo vestíbulo-ocular estão relacionados com a dificuldade de leitura e escrita. MÉTODOS : foram selecionados 18 sujeitos de ambos os gêneros, faixa etária entre nove e 14 anos de idade, com audição e acuidade visual estática dentro dos padrões de normalidade, sendo um grupo de 11 sujeitos com dificuldade de leitura e escrita e outro grupo controle composto por sete sujeitos sem a dificuldade. Os exames realizados foram avaliações da linguagem escrita, acuidade visual estática, acuidade visual dinâmica, audiológica e oculomotricidade. RESULTADOS : a acuidade visual estática, calibração, nistagmo espontâneo e semi - espontâneo apresentaram-se dentro da normalidade em toda população estudada. As provas de acuidade visual dinâmica e movimento sacádico apresentaram diferença estatisticamente significante (p<0,05) entre os grupos estudados, enquanto o movimento de rastreio apresentou alterações em ambos os grupos, não ocorrendo diferença estatística. CONCLUSÃO: alterações na oculomotricidade, assim como mal desempenho do reflexo vestíbulo-ocular mostrado na acuidade visual dinâmica podem estar interferindo na dificuldade do desenvolvimento da leitura e escrita. .

PURPOSE: to determine whether changes in eye movement and vestibular- ocular reflex are related to the difficulty of reading and writing. METHODS: 18 subjects of both genders, aged between nine and 14 years of age with hearing and static visual acuity within normal limits were selected: one group of 11 subjects with reading and writing and other composite control group seven subjects without difficulty. The tests included evaluations of written language, static and dynamic visual acuity, audiological and eye movements. RESULTS: static visual acuity, calibration, spontaneous and semi- spontaneous nystagmus were within the normal range throughout the study population. Proofs of dynamic visual acuity and saccades showed statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) between the groups, while the smooth-persuit eye movements showed changes in both groups, with no statistical difference. CONCLUSION: alterations in eye movement, as well as poor performance of the vestibulo-ocular reflex shown in dynamic visual acuity may be interfering with the difficulty of the development of reading and writing. .
