ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Deficiencies or imbalances in a person's intake of nutrients are referred to as malnutrition. Malnutrition remains a significant public health concern in the United States, with potential consequences ranging from chronic disease to mortality. This study aims to assess the disparities in place of death due to malnutrition in the United States from 1999 to 2020, based on variables like age, gender, race, and location, utilizing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Information and Communication Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC WONDER) database. METHODOLOGY: Data regarding mortality due to malnutrition was extracted for the years 1999-2020 from the CDC WONDER database. Univariate regression analysis was performed to investigate disparities in the place of death based on variables. RESULTS: Between 1999 and 2020, a total of 1,03,962 malnutrition-related deaths were recorded, with 31,023 in home and hospice care, 68,173 in medical and nursing facilities, and 4,766 in other places. The odds of death due to malnutrition at home or hospice were highest for the 85+ age group, female gender, census region 4 (West), and Asian or Pacific Islander race. CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals a rising trend in mortality due to malnutrition in the United States, especially among certain demographic groups and in medical facilities and nursing homes. It emphasizes the need to understand the factors contributing to this increase in mortality rates. Future research should focus on these contributors to combat the rising burden of malnutrition-related mortality in the United States.

ABSTRACT

Abatement of pollutants i.e. heavy metals by using green biomaterials is an emerging area of interest due to its cost-effective and renewability. In the present study, the potential of Alium Cepa seed biomass (ACSB) as a novel biosorbent for the adsorption of Cr(VI), Cd(II), Zn(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) was investigated. The FTIR spectrum of ACSB confirmed a presence of surface OH bond, an essential functional group for metal uptake. Biosorption factors such as pH (2-10), time (15-190 min), dosage (1-5 g/L) and initial metal concentration (50-200 mg/L) were optimized at the ambient conditions. The equilibrium adsorption time was obtained at 90 min for Cd(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II), as well as 120 min for Cr(VI) and Zn(II), respectively, for the mentioned metal ions removal. The maximum removal efficiency was obtained at 4 g/L of ASCB for 50 mg/L adsorbate and a neutral pH. Under this condition, the maximum uptake was 0.67, 1.50, 1.68, 1.03 and 1.75 mg/L for Cr(VI), Cd(II), Zn(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II), respectively. Monolayer biosorption was determined for the studied heavy metals. The removal of the metal ions by ACSB followed a pseudo 2nd order sorption kinetics. The results suggested that ACSB is more suitable to remove (99%) Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) as compared to Zn(II) and Cr(VI).

ABSTRACT

Histopathological examination is considered as gold standard procedure for arriving at a final diagnosis of various lesions of the human body. However, it is limited by a number of alterations of normal morphologic and cytological features that occur as a result of presence of artifacts. These artifacts may occur during surgical removal, fixation, tissue processing, embedding and microtomy and staining and mounting procedures. They can even lead to complete uselessness of the tissue. It is therefore essential to identify the commonly occurring artifacts during histopathological interpretations of tissue sections. This article reviews the common artifacts encountered during slide examination alongside the remedial measures which can be undertaken to differentiate between an artifact and tissue constituent.

ABSTRACT

Flexible supercapacitors with high electrochemical performance and stability along with mechanical robustness have gained immense attraction due to the substantial advancements and rampant requirements of storage devices. To meet the exponentially growing demand of microsized energy storage device, a cost-effective and durable supercapacitor is mandatory to realize their practical applications. Here, in this work, the fabrication route of novel electrode materials with high flexibility and charge-storage capability is reported using the hybrid structure of 1D zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods and conductive polyvinylidene fluoride-tetrafluoroethylene (P(VDF-TrFE)) electrospun nanofibers. The ZnO nanorods are conformably grown on conductive P(VDF-TrFE) nanofibers to fabricate the light-weighted porous electrodes for supercapacitors. The conductive nanofibers acts as a high surface area scaffold with significant electrochemical performance, while the addition of ZnO nanorods further enhances the specific capacitance by 59%. The symmetric cell with the fabricated electrodes presents high areal capacitance of 1.22 mF cm-2 at a current density of 0.1 mA cm-2 with a power density of more than 1600 W kg-1 . Furthermore, these electrodes show outstanding flexibility and high stability with 96% and 78% retention in specific capacitance after 1000 and 5000 cycles, respectively. The notable mechanical durability and robustness of the cell acquire both good flexibility and high performance.

ABSTRACT

Following percutaneous intervention (PCI), restenosis, progression of disease and multi-vessel involvement may require further intervention in the form of surgical revascularization. Patients with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) done after PCI were evaluated to find out the reason for the need of surgical revascularization. Over a period of 12 months, 610 patients underwent CABG. Out of them, 34 patients had previous PCI/stenting. Coronary risk factors including hypertension in 85%, diabetes mellitus in 60%, dyslipidemia in 60%, tobacco use in 50% and a positive family history was present in 53% of the patients. All patients were symptomatic. Multi-vessel disease was present in 67% and single vessel in 4.7%. The extent of disease and stenosis of stents were responsible for reintervention. Careful selection of patients is required in presence of multiple risk factors for coronary artery disease to provide maximum benefit by either PCI or CABG.
