ABSTRACT

Reactions of 3-formylchromone (L) with Ni(ii) and Co(ii) ions having different anions (acetate, perchlorate, nitrate, and chloride) yielded a series of binary and ternary octahedral complexes with the general formula [ML n L' m X y (S) a ]Z y ·bS, where M = Ni or Co, n = 1-3, L' = auxiliary ligand = 8-hydroxyquinoline or 1,10-phenanthroline, m = 1 or 2, X = acetate or chloride, y = 0 or 2, S = H2O or MeOH, a = 0-2, Z = nitrate or perchlorate and b = 0-1.5. Elemental and thermal analyses and infra-red, electronic, mass, magnetic susceptibility and molar conductivity measurements were successfully utilized to characterize the structures of the chromone complexes. The chromone ligand acts as a neutral bidentate ligand through its formyl and γ-pyrone oxygen atoms. The obtained complexes were formed with molar ratios 1 : 2 and 1 : 3 M : L for the binary and 1 : 2 : 1 and 1 : 1 : 1 M : L : L' for the ternary complexes. The kinetic parameters of the thermal degradation steps were estimated and explained using the Coats-Redfern equations. The synthesized complexes showed antimicrobial activity with higher activity toward Candida albicans and Bacillus subtilis. Docking studies showed good agreement with the antimicrobial activity. Molecular modeling of the synthesized complexes was performed using Hyperchem at the PM3 level and the calculated structures correlate with the experimental data.

ABSTRACT

The current study aimed to evaluate the probable protective effect of Lepidium sativum seeds (LSS) against CCl4 induced hepatic injury in New-Zealand rabbits. Rabbits were randomly divided into two main groups; group-A (noninjured group, n=15) was divided to subgroups A1 (untreated control) and A2 and A3 which received 200 & 400 mg/kg bw of LSS, respectively, in their diet daily. Group-B (injured group, n=30) were subcutaneously injected with CCl4 (0.5 ml/kg bw) starting from day one of the experiment and were equally divided into 3 subgroups: B1 received normal standard diet and B2 & B3 received 200 & 400 mg/kg bw of LSS, respectively, in their diet daily. Five rabbits of all subgroups were decapitated 5 and 10 weeks after experimental running. Biochemical analysis revealed significant decrease in serum levels of transaminases, γ-GT, ALP, total bilirubin, cholesterol, triglycerides associated with significant increase in the serum levels of T protein and albumin of 200 and 400 mg/kg bw of LSS protected rabbits for 5 and 10 weeks as compared with CCl4 treated rabbits. Oxidative stress and depressed antioxidant system of the liver tissues were markedly obvious in the CCl4 treated group. LSS administration reversed these results towards normalization. Histopathological examination of LSS protected rabbits (200 mg/kg bw of LSS for 10 weeks) showed improvement of the histoarchitectural changes of the liver induced by CCl4 to the normal aspect, showing regenerating hepatocytes with no steatosis, discrete chronic venous congestion, and discrete inflammatory infiltrate. The current findings provide new evidence that LSS could reverse the hepatotoxic effects of CCl4 and repair the liver functions.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic resistance is an increasing worldwide crisis. In Egypt, it is prohibited by law to dispense antibiotics with no prescription; however, there are no active and enforced governmental policies and laws to regulate such a process. This has led to increased antibiotic dispensing and consumption. AIMS: To assess some basic knowledge and attitudes towards antibiotic resistance and the practice of antibiotic dispensing among Egyptian community pharmacists in Greater Cairo. METHODOLOGY: An observational cross-sectional self-administrated survey targeting licensed community pharmacists in Greater Cairo, Egypt. The survey was validated by both face and content validation. RESULTS: Exactly 531 pharmacists were invited to join the survey, and only 461 pharmacists agreed to participate. Approximately half of the participants (51.2%) were considered to have good basic knowledge regarding antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance. The majority (74%) of the respondents strongly agreed that antibiotics are over-prescribed in Egypt, and almost all of them (90%) were hoping the Ministry of Health could publish guidelines for antibiotic dispensing in Egypt. Male pharmacists were more likely to engage and communicate with either patient or prescriber during the antibiotic dispensing process compared to females. CONCLUSION: The Egyptian Ministry of Health should regulate and monitor the process of dispensing antibiotics without a prescription with law enforcements. Moreover, community pharmacists should have more awareness on the consequences of the problem of antibiotic dispensing without a prescription, regardless of the business profit behind it.
