ABSTRACT

To assess malnutrition contribution to the functional status and health related quality of life after hospitalization due to COVID-19 pneumonia, 66 selected adults referred for physical rehabilitation accepted to participate in the study; none of them required oxygen supply or had history of lung/musculoskeletal/neurological/immune/rheumatic disease or trauma, or contraindication for respiratory-function tests. At three evaluations, with 3 months in-between, assessments included: self-report of functional status, the St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire, spirometry, the 6-min-walk-test, the MRC-scale, the 30-s sit-to-stand-test, the timed-up-and-go-test, nutritional status, and ultrasound imaging (vastus medialis and diaphragm). At referral, patients had nutritional deficits with protein deficiency, which gradually improved; while muscle thickness (of both vastus medialis and diaphragm) increased, along with muscle strength and mobility (ANOVA, p < 0.05). Contrarywise, the distance covered during the 6-min-walk-test decreased (ANOVA, p < 0.05), with a negative influence from excess body mass. During rehabilitation, health-related quality of life and functional status improved, with negative influence from a history of tobacco use and referral delay, respectively. After hospitalization due to COVID-19, early diagnosis of both protein deficiency and decrease of skeletal muscle thickness could be relevant for rehabilitation, while pondering the negative impact of excess body mass on submaximal exercise performance.

ABSTRACT

Honeydew honey is produced by bees (Apis mellifera) foraging and collecting secretions produced by certain types of aphids on various parts of plants. In addition to exhibiting organoleptic characteristics that distinguish them from nectar honey, these honeys are known for their functional properties, such as strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Despite their importance, they remain poorly characterized in comparison with flower honeys, as most studies on this subject are not only carried out on too few samples but also still focused on traditional chemical-physical parameters, such as specific rotation, major sugars, or melissopalynological information. Since mass spectrometry has consistently been a primary tool for the characterization and authentication of honeys, this review will focus on the application of these methods to the characterization of the minor fraction of honeydew honey. More specifically, this review will attempt to highlight what progress has been made so far in identifying markers of the authenticity of the botanical and/or geographical origin of honeydew honeys by mass spectrometry-based approaches. Furthermore, strategies devoted to the determination of contaminants and toxins in honeydew honeys will be addressed. Such analyses represent a valuable tool for establishing the level of food safety associated with these products. A critical analysis of the presented studies will identify their limitations and critical issues, thereby describing the current state of research on the topic.

ABSTRACT

Health problems in the Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) region are highly concentrated on non-communicable diseases, being cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and cancer the leading causes of death. Different countries of the region are at different stages of development in addressing CVDs and cancer. Opportunities for training and continuing education in cardio-oncology, as well as active cardio-oncology groups, are primarily limited to large academic institutions in major metropolitan areas. In addition, the development of advanced imaging modalities in LAC faces challenges such as the high cost of equipment, a lack of equipment maintenance and service, as well as insufficient specific training for both imaging specialists and referring clinicians. To contribute to the implementation of actionable strategies ensuring equitable access to care for all, international organizations, such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), offer support for the regional development of health projects that address educational needs. In this context, a new IAEA regional cooperation project for LAC titled 'Strengthening of regional capacities on the use of Nuclear Medicine techniques in a Cardio-oncology multimodality approach in patients with cancer' will be developed during 2024-2025. The experience of some centres, as well as national experiences in certain countries of the region, that have been previously involved in other regional projects, can be leveraged for the benefit of the entire region. We present a proposed road map for cross-institutional/countries collaboration in the development of cardio-oncology in the LAC region, contributing to decreasing the barriers to the growth of the subspecialty.

Pairing a palatable flavor (US) with an initially neutral flavor cue (CS) results in an acquired conditioned preference for the latter. Two main associations have been proposed to explain the acquisition of flavor preferences: Flavor-Flavor and Flavor-Nutrient learning. Although the hedonic reaction triggered by US consumption has also been suggested as a possible additional component underlying acquired flavor preference, this issue has received little attention. Here we explored whether the amount of training to the CS-US compound can favor the formation of a Flavor-Hedonic reaction association using rats as subjects and sucrose as the US. We expected that the more exposure to the CS-US compound, the stronger the S-R type association. Since S-R associations are not sensitive to devaluation procedures, we used a Sensory-Specific Satiety procedure to devalue the US after conditioning and then measured preferences for the CS. On Experiment 1 with a short restrictive training (classic procedure), preference for the CS was decreased after devaluation of the US compared to the control condition. On Experiment 2, with short unrestrictive training, preference for the CS was again weakened. Experiment 3 with a long unrestrictive training, rats expressed preference for the CS regardless of the devaluation procedure. These results suggest that, as with an instrumental paradigm, extensive training in flavor preference learning undermines the US devaluation effect.

ABSTRACT

Olive oil is a food of great importance in the Mediterranean diet and culture. However, during its production, the olive oil industry generates a large amount of waste by-products that can be an important source of bioactive compounds, such as phenolic compounds and terpenes, revalorizing them in the context of the circular economy. Therefore, it is of great interest to study the distribution and abundance of these bioactive compounds in the different by-products. This research is a screening focused on phytochemical analysis, with particular emphasis on the identification and quantification of the phenolic and terpenic fractions. Both the main products of the olive industry (olives, olive paste and produced oil) and the by-products generated throughout the oil production process (leaf, "alpeorujo", liquid and solid residues generated during decanting commonly named "borras" and washing water) were analyzed. For this purpose, different optimized extraction procedures were performed for each matrix, followed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-TOF/MS) analysis. Although no phenolic alcohols were quantified in the leaf and the presence of secoiridoids was low, this by-product was notable for its flavonoid (720 ± 20 µg/g) and terpene (5000 ± 300 µg/g) contents. "Alpeorujo" presented a complete profile of compounds of interest, being abundant in phenolic alcohols (900 ± 100 µg/g), secoiridoids (4500 ± 500 µg/g) and terpenes (1200 ± 100 µg/g), among others. On the other hand, while the solid residue of the borras was the most abundant in phenolic alcohols (3700 ± 200 µg/g) and secoiridoids (680 ± 20 µg/g), the liquid fraction of this waste was notable for its content of elenolic acid derivatives (1700 ± 100 µg/mL) and phenolic alcohols (3000 ± 300 µg/mL). Furthermore, to our knowledge, this is the first time that the terpene content of this by-product has been monitored, demonstrating that it is an important source of these compounds, especially maslinic acid (120 ± 20 µg/g). Finally, the phytochemical content in wash water was lower than expected, and only elenolic acid derivatives were detected (6 ± 1 µg/mL). The results highlighted the potential of the olive by-products as possible alternative sources of a wide variety of olive bioactive compounds for their revalorization into value-added products.

ABSTRACT

The concept of multiphysics, where materials respond to diverse external stimuli, such as magnetic fields, electric fields, light irradiation, stress, heat, and chemical reactions, plays a fundamental role in the development of innovative devices. Nanomanufacturing, especially in low-dimensional systems, enhances the synergistic interactions taking place on the nanoscale. Light-matter interaction, rather than electric fields, holds great promise for achieving low-power, wireless control over magnetism, solving two major technological problems: the feasibility of electrical contacts at smaller scales and the undesired heating of the devices. Here, we shed light on the remarkable reversible modulation of magnetism using visible light in epitaxial Fe3O4/BaTiO3 heterostructure. This achievement is underpinned by the convergence of two distinct mechanisms. First, the magnetoelastic effect, triggered by ferroelectric domain switching, induces a proportional change in coercivity and remanence upon laser illumination. Second, light-matter interaction induces charged ferroelectric domain walls' electrostatic decompensations, acting intimately on the magnetization of the epitaxial Fe3O4 film by magnetoelectric coupling. Crucially, our experimental results vividly illustrate the capability to manipulate magnetic properties using visible light. This concomitant mechanism provides a promising avenue for low-intensity visible-light manipulation of magnetism, offering potential applications in multiferroic devices.

ABSTRACT

Dimensional confinement has shown to be an effective strategy to tune competing degrees of freedom in complex oxides. Here, we achieved atomic layered growth of trigonal vanadium sesquioxide (V2O3) by means of oxygen-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. This led to a series of high-quality epitaxial ultrathin V2O3 films down to unit cell thickness, enabling the study of the intrinsic electron correlations upon confinement. By electrical and optical measurements, we demonstrate a dimensional confinement-induced metal-insulator transition in these ultrathin films. We shed light on the Mott-Hubbard nature of this transition, revealing a vanishing quasiparticle weight as demonstrated by photoemission spectroscopy. Furthermore, we prove that dimensional confinement acts as an effective out-of-plane stress. This highlights the structural component of correlated oxides in a confined architecture, while opening an avenue to control both in-plane and out-of-plane lattice components by epitaxial strain and confinement, respectively.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse trends in urinary tract infection (UTIs) hospitalisation among patients adults 18-65 aged in Spain from 2000-2015. METHODS: Retrospective observational study using the Spanish Hospitalisation Minimum Data Set (CMBD), with codifications by the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9). Variables: Type of UTIs (pyelonephritis, prostatitis, cystitis and non-specific-UTIs), sex, age (in 5 categories: 18-49 and 50-64 years in men, and 18-44, 45-55 and 56-64 years in women), comorbidity, length of stay, costs and mortality associated with admission. The incidence of hospitalisation was studied according to sex, age group and type of UTIs per 100,000. Trends were identified using Joinpoint regression. RESULTS: From 2000-2015, we found 259,804 hospitalisations for UTIs (51.6% pyelonephritis, 7.5% prostatitis, 0.6% cystitis and 40.3% non-specific UTIs). Pyelonephritis predominated in women and non-specific UTIs in men. The hospital stay and the average cost (2,160 EUR (IQR 1,7872,540 were greater in men. Overall mortality (0.4%) was greater in non-specific UTIs. More women were admitted (rates of 79.4 to 81.7) than in men (30.2 to 41). The greatest increase was found in men aged 50-64 years (from 59.3 to 87). In the Joinpoint analysis, the incidence of pyelonephritis increased in women [AAPC 2.5(CI 95% 1.6;3.4)], and non-specific UTIs decreased [AAPC -2.2(CI 95% -3.3;-1.2)]. Pyelonephritis decreased in men [AAPC -0.5 (CI 95% -1.5;0.5)] and non-specific UTIs increased [AAPC 2.3 (CI 95% 1.9;2.6)] and prostatitis increased [AAPC 2.6 (CI 95% 1.4;3.7)]. CONCLUSIONS: The urinary infection-related hospitalisation rate in adults in Spain increased during the period 2000-2015. Pyelonephritis predominated in women and non-specific UTIs in men. The highest hospitalisation rates occurred in the women but the greatest increase was found in men aged 65-74. The lenght of stay and cost were higher in men.

ABSTRACT

Lyophilized plant-origin extracts are rich in highly potent antioxidant polyphenols. In order to incorporate them into food products, it is necessary to protect these phytochemicals from atmospheric factors such as heat, light, moisture, or pH, and to enhance their bioavailability due to their low solubility. To address these challenges, recent studies have focused on the development of encapsulation techniques for antioxidant compounds within polymeric structures. In this study, lyophilized olive leaf extracts were microencapsulated with the aim of overcoming the aforementioned challenges. The method used for the preparation of the studied microparticles involves external ionic gelation carried out within a water-oil (W/O) emulsion at room temperature. HPLC analysis demonstrates a high content of polyphenols, with 90% of the bioactive compounds encapsulated. Meanwhile, quantification by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) reveals that the dried leaves, lyophilized extract, and microencapsulated form contain satisfactory levels of macro- and micro-minerals (calcium, potassium, sodium). The microencapsulation technique could be a novel strategy to harness the polyphenols and minerals of olive leaves, thus enriching food products and leveraging the antioxidant properties of the polyphenolic compounds found in the lyophilized extract.

ABSTRACT

Here, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of 356 Klebsiella pneumoniae species complex (KpSC) isolates that were classified as classical (cl), presumptive hypervirulent (p-hv) and hypermucoviscous-like (hmv-like). Overall, K. pneumoniae (82.3%), K. variicola (2.5%) and K. quasipneumoniae (2.5%) were identified. These isolates comprised 321 cl-KpSC, 7 p-hv-KpSC and 18 hmv-like-KpSC. A large proportion of cl-KpSC isolates were extended-spectrum-ß-lactamases (ESBLs)-producers (64.4%) and 3.4% of isolates were colistin-resistant carrying carbapenemase and ESBL genes. All p-hv-KpSC showed an antibiotic susceptible phenotype and hmv-like isolates were found to be ESBL-producers (8/18). Assays for capsule production and capsule-dependent virulence phenotypes and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) were performed in a subset of isolates. Capsule amount differed in all p-hv strains and hmv-like produced higher capsule amounts than cl strains; these variations had important implications in phagocytosis and virulence. Murine sepsis model showed that most cl strains were nonlethal and the hmv-like caused 100% mortality with 3 × 108 CFUs. Unexpectedly, 3/7 (42.9%) of p-hv strains required 108 CFUs to cause 100% mortality (atypical hypervirulent), and 4/7 (57.1%) strains were considered truly hypervirulent (hv). Genomic analyses confirmed the diverse population, including isolates belonging to hv clonal groups (CG) CG23, CG86, CG380 and CG25 (this corresponded to the ST3999 a novel hv clone) and MDR clones such as CG258 and CG147 (ST392) among others. We noted that the hmv-like and hv-ST3999 isolates showed a close phylogenetic relationship with cl-MDR K. pneumoniae. The information collected here is important to understand the evolution of clinically important phenotypes such as hypervirulent and ESBL-producing-hypermucoviscous-like amongst the KpSC in Mexican healthcare settings. Likewise, this study shows that mgrB inactivation is the main mechanism of colistin resistance in K. pneumoniae isolates from Mexico.

ABSTRACT

The latest advances in technology and materials science have catalyzed a transformative shift towards the adoption of environmentally conscious and lightweight materials across key sectors such as aeronautics, biomedical, and automotive industries. Noteworthy among these innovations are the magnesium-aluminum (Mg-Al) alloys employed in aeronautical applications, contributing to the overall reduction in aircraft weight and subsequently diminishing fuel consumption and mitigating atmospheric emissions. The present work delves into a study of the anti-corrosive properties inherent in various sol-gel coatings, leveraging a range of environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitors, specifically tailored for samples of the AZ61 alloy. Methodologically, the work involves the synthesis and application of sol-gel coatings on AZ61 alloy containing eco-friendly inhibitors: L-cysteine, N-acetyl-cysteine, curcumin and methylene blue. Subsequently, an accelerated corrosion test in a simulated saline environment is performed. Through microstructural and compositional analyses, the best inhibitors responses are achieved with inhibitors containing S, N heteroatoms and conjugated double bonds in their structure, probably due to the creation of a continuous MgCl2 layer. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on protective eco-coatings, aligning with the broader paradigm shift towards sustainable and lightweight materials in key industries.

Providencia rettgeri, belonging to the genus Providencia, had gained significant interest due to its increasing prevalence as a common pathogen responsible for healthcare-associated infections in hospitals. P. rettgeri isolates producing carbapenemases have been reported to reduce the efficiency of carbapenems in clinical antimicrobial therapy. However, coexistence with other resistance determinants is rarely reported. The goal of this study was the molecular characterization of carbapenemase-producing Providencia spp. clinical isolates. Among 23 Providencia spp. resistant to imipenem, 21 were positive to blaNDM-1; one positive to blaNDM-1 and blaOXA-58 like; and one isolate co-producing blaIMP-27, blaOXA-24/40 like, and blaOXA-58 like were identified. We observed a low clonal relationship, and the incompatibility groups Col3M and ColRNAI were identified in the plasmid harboring blaNDM-1. We report for the first time a P. rettgeri strain co-producing blaIMP-27, blaOXA-24-like, and blaOXA-58 like. The analysis of these resistance mechanisms in carbapenemase co-producing clinical isolates reflects the increased resistance.

BACKGROUND: Some social networks, such as Twitter (now known as X), have proven to be very useful for sharing and discussing multiple aspects related to the healthcare field. However, the use of Twitter as a method of communication and knowledge transfer to nursing students has been limited. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the usability and effect of an educational intervention for monitoring additional content, through the social network Twitter, of various subjects of nursing studies (clinical nursing, community nursing, and nursing fundamentals). DESIGN: An exploratory experimental study was carried out through an educational intervention during the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 academic years. SETTINGS: Faculty of Nursing at the University of Salamanca, Spain. Participants were 308 students. METHODS: Students used Twitter to receive tweets about news or links to subject-related content. They also completed a pre-post questionnaire. RESULTS: A high degree of visualization and interaction of the study's Twitter account stands out, mainly in the subject clinical nursing. In relation to usability, the participants stated that they strongly agreed with aspects such as "thinking that it was easy to use the account" (59.4 %) as well as "imagining that the majority of colleagues would learn very quickly to use said account" (46.5 %). Students who used the account at least once a day obtained higher scores on the post-study knowledge questionnaire than those who used it less than once a day (p < 0.05), or those who used it 2 or 3 times during the study (p = 0.010). CONCLUSIONS: The group of participants who used the Twitter account at least once a day stated that using the account was easy and that they would like to use it more frequently. Likewise, greater use of this tool was associated with a better score on a post-study knowledge questionnaire.

In this study, layer-by-layer coatings composed of heparin and collagen are proposed as an extracellular mimetic environment on nerve guide conduits (NGC) to modulate the behavior of Schwann cells (hSCs). The authors evaluated the stability, degradation over time, and bioactivity of six bilayers of heparin/collagen layer-by-layer coatings, denoted as (HEP/COL)6. The stability study reveals that (HEP/COL)6 is stable after incubating the coatings in cell media for up to 21 days. The impact of (HEP/COL)6 on hSCs viability, protein expression, and migration is evaluated. These assays show that hSCs cultured in (HEP/COL)6 have enhanced protein expression and migration. This condition increases the expression of neurotrophic and immunomodulatory factors up to 1.5-fold compared to controls, and hSCs migrated 1.34 times faster than in the uncoated surfaces. Finally, (HEP/COL)6 is also applied to a commercial collagen-based NGC, NeuraGen, and hSC viability and adhesion are studied after 6 days of culture. The morphology of NeuraGen is not altered by the presence of (HEP/COL)6 and a nearly 170% increase of the cell viability is observed in the condition where NeuraGen is used with (HEP/COL)6. Additionally, cell adhesion on the coated samples is successfully demonstrated. This work demonstrates the reparative enhancing potential of extracellular mimetic coatings.

ABSTRACT

We present the case of a 26-year-old male patient with no history of interest who consulted the emergency department due to occlusive symptoms. Urgent CT showed the presence of a transverse colonic volvulus in the context of a heterotopic liver, located in the left hypochondrium. There were no clinical or radiological signs of perforation or ischemia, so urgent endoscopic decompression was performed with subsequent elective surgery with a favorable resolution of the condition. Transverse colonic volvulus is rare (<1%) and wandering liver is an exceptional predisposing factor, with less than a hundred published cases. In these patients, endoscopic decompression carries a risk of perforation with high recurrence rates, and surgical treatment should be considered. However, in this case, in the absence of severity criteria, decompressive colonoscopy was considered an urgent treatment and subsequent elective surgery with favorable results.

ABSTRACT

Optical means instead of electric fields may offer a new pathway for low-power and wireless control of magnetism, holding great potential to design next-generation memory and spintronic devices. Artificial multiferroic materials have shown remarkable suitability as platforms towards the optical control of magnetic properties. However, the practical use of magnetic modulation should be both stable and reversible and, particularly, it should occur at room temperature. Here we show an unprecedented reversible modulation of magnetism using low-intensity visible-light in Fe75Al25/BaTiO3 heterostructures, at room temperature. This is enabled by the existence of highly oriented charged domain walls arranged in arrays of alternating in-plane and out-of-plane ferroelectric domains with stripe morphology. Light actuation yields a net anisotropic stress caused by ferroelectric domain switching, which leads to a 90-degree reorientation of the magnetic easy axis. Significant changes in the coercivity and squareness ratio of the hysteresis loops can be light-modulated, encouraging the development of novel low energy-consumption wireless magneto-optical devices.

ABSTRACT

Background: Erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs) are the first-line therapy in patients with lower-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (LR-MDS). Some predictive factors for ESAs response have been identified. Type and number of somatic mutations have been associated with prognosis and response to therapies in MDS patients. Objectives: The objective was to evaluate the outcomes after ESAs in patients with LR-MDS and to address the potential predictive value of somatic mutations in ESAs-treated patients. Design: Multi-center retrospective study of a cohort of 722 patients with LR-MDS included in the SPRESAS (Spanish Registry of Erythropoietic Stimulating Agents Study) study. Retrospective analysis of 65 patients with next generation sequencing (NGS) data from diagnosis. Methods: ESAs' efficacy and safety were evaluated in patients receiving ESAs and best supportive care (BSC). To assess the potential prognostic value of somatic mutations in erythroid response (ER) rate and outcome, NGS was performed in responders and non-responders. Results: ER rate for ESAs-treated patients was 65%. Serum erythropoietin (EPO) level <200 U/l was the only variable significantly associated with a higher ER rate (odds ratio, 2.45; p = 0.036). Median overall survival (OS) in patients treated with ESAs was 6.7 versus 3.1 years in patients receiving BSC (p < 0.001). From 65 patients with NGS data, 57 (87.7%) have at least one mutation. We observed a trend to a higher frequency of ER among patients with a lower number of mutated genes (40.4% in <3 mutated genes versus 22.2% in ⩾3; p = 0.170). The presence of ⩾3 mutated genes was also significantly associated with worse OS (hazard ratio, 2.8; p = 0.015), even in responders. A higher cumulative incidence of acute myeloid leukemia progression at 5 years was also observed in patients with ⩾3 mutated genes versus <3 (33.3% and 10.7%, respectively; p < 0.001). Conclusion: This large study confirms the beneficial effect of ESAs and the adverse effect of somatic mutations in patients with LR-MDS.

Background: Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is a blood-based biomarker for alcohol consumption that can be self-collected and has high sensitivity, specificity, and a longer detection window compared to other alcohol biomarkers.Objectives: We evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of a telehealth-based contingency management (CM) intervention for alcohol use disorder (AUD) using the blood-based biomarker PEth to assess alcohol consumption.Methods: Sixteen adults (7 female, 9 male) with AUD were randomized to Control or CM conditions. Control participants received reinforcers regardless of their PEth levels. CM participants received reinforcers for week-to-week decreases in PEth (Phase 1) or maintenance of PEth consistent with abstinence (<20 ng/mL, Phase 2). Blood samples were self-collected using the TASSO-M20 device. Acceptability was assessed by retention in weeks. Satisfaction was assessed with the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSQ-8) and qualitative interviews. The primary efficacy outcome was PEth-defined abstinence. Secondary outcomes included the proportion of visits with PEth-defined heavy alcohol consumption, negative urine ethyl glucuronide results, and self-reported alcohol use.Results: Retention averaged 18.6 ± 8.8 weeks for CM participants. CM participants reported high levels of satisfaction (CSQ-8, Mean = 30.3 ± 1.5). Interview themes included intervention positives, such as staff support, quality of life improvement, and accountability. 72% of PEth samples from CM participants were consistent with abstinence versus 34% for Control participants (OR = 5.0, p = 0.007). PEth-defined heavy alcohol consumption was detected in 28% of CM samples and 52% of Control samples (OR = 0.36, p = 0.159). CM participants averaged 1.9 ± 1.7 drinks/day versus 4.2 ± 6.3 for Control participants (p = 0.304).Conclusion: Results support the acceptability and satisfaction of a telehealth PEth-based CM intervention, though a larger study is needed to assess its efficacy [NCT04038021].

ABSTRACT

The spread of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli has constantly increased in both clinical and community infections. Actually, the main ESBL reported is the CTX-M family, which is widely disseminated between the Enterobacteriaceae family. The epidemiology of the CTX-M family shows the CTX-M-15 variant dominating worldwide, followed by CTX-M-14 and CTX-M-27. The specific ESBL-producing E. coli clones included mainly the sequence types ST131, ST405, and ST648. In this report, we present the molecular characterization of ESBL-producing E. coli clinical isolates from eight hospitals in Mexico. From a collection of 66 isolates, 39 (59%) were identified as blaCTX-M-14 and blaCTX-M-27 belonging to the group CTX-M-9. We identified 25 (38%) isolates, producing blaCTX-M-28 belonging to the group CTX-M-1. blaCTX-M-2 and blaTEM-55 were identified in one isolate, respectively. Fourteen isolates (21%) were positive for blaCTX-M-14 (13%) and blaCTX-M-28 (7.3%) that were selected for further analyses; the antimicrobial susceptibility showed resistance to ampicillin (> 256 µg/mL), cefotaxime (> 256 µg/mL), cefepime (> 64 µg/mL), and ceftazidime (16 µg/mL). The ResFinder analysis showed the presence of the antimicrobial resistance genes aacA4, aadA5, aac(3)lla, sul1, dfrA17, tet(A), cmlA1, and blaTEM-1B. PlasmidFinder analysis identified in all the isolates the replicons IncFIB, which were confirmed by PCR replicon typing. The MLST analysis identified isolates belonging to ST131, ST167, ST405, and ST648. The ISEcp1B genetic element was found at 250 pb upstream of blaCTX-M-14 and flanked by the IS903 genetic element at 35 pb downstream. The IS1380-like element ISEc9 family transposase was identified at 250 pb upstream of blaCTX-M-14 and flanked downstream by the IS5/IS1182 at 80 pb. Our study highlights the significant prevalence of CTX-M-14 and CTX-M-28 enzymes as the second-most common ESBL-producing E. coli among isolates in Mexican hospitals. The identification of specific sequence types in different regions provides valuable insights into the correlation between ESBL and E. coli strains. This contribution to understanding their epidemiology and potential transmission routes is crucial for developing effective strategies to mitigate the spread of ESBL-producing E. coli in healthcare settings.
