ABSTRACT

Forty-nine patients were included in a controlled clinical trial comparing the effect of topical non-steroid versus potent steroid preparation in acute anterior non-granulomatous uveitis. Twenty-five patients were randomized to 1% Indometacin and 24 patients to 0.1% Dexametason treatment 6 times a day. There was no difference between the two groups initially. After 7 days of treatment we found significantly less inflammation in the steroid treated group, this significant difference disappearing on day 14. We conclude that whenever adverse reactions to corticosteroid eye drops are suspected or proven, Indometacin eye drops make up a useful alternative to even strong solutions of steroids. ABSTRACT

In a controlled prospective trial the peroperative use of sodium hyaluronate and methylcellulose (2%) was compared. Two hundred and fifteen patients received sodium hyaluronate and 189 methylcellulose during extracapsular cataract extraction. We found no significant difference in postoperative anterior chamber inflammation, intraocular pressure, frequency of fibrin in the anterior chamber, nor need for additional medication during the first 5 postoperative days.

ABSTRACT

The effect of sodium hyaluronate eye drops in the treatment of severe keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) was evaluated in a double masked crossover trial, comparing the effect of a 0.1% solution, a 0.2% solution and placebo in 20 patients. We found significantly decreased rose bengal staining and increased break-up time following 0.2% treatment compared to placebo. No significant difference was found in the Schirmer values and the cornea sensitivity. The patients significantly preferred sodium hyaluronate treatment. We conclude that sodium hyaluronate eye drops seem to be a valuable new agent in the management of KCS.

ABSTRACT

Lysozyme (ly) concentration in tears was measured the day before and the days following intracapsular cataract extraction in 25 patients. A median ly concentration of 1.30 mg/ml was found pre-operatively. On the first post-operative day a significant drop in the median ly concentration was observed (0.58 mg/ml). Thereafter a gradual rise towards pre-operative level was found at the 12th post-operative day. An inverse correlation existed between ly concentrations and Schirmer values during the observation period, and dilution thus seems to be an important cause of the post-operative drop in ly concentration. We observed an inverse relationship between ly level, and the number (%) of patients displaying bacterial colonization of the conjunctival sac 24 h later. The most frequently isolated bacteria were staphylococcus albus and diphteroids. It is proposed that the drop in ly concentration post-operatively may contribute to an increased risk of bacterial colonization of the eye post-operatively.
