ABSTRACT
Fundamento: los dientes, relacionados a las funciones de masticación, estética, fonación representan un elemento fundamental por lo que se considera que la ausencia de los mismos ocasiona un agravamiento a la salud bucal.Objetivo: determinar la necesidad real de prótesis estomatológica en el Área de Salud Norte del municipio Camagüey.Métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal en la población del Área de Salud Norte del municipio Camagüey desde octubre de 2013 hasta abril de 2015. El universo de estudio estuvo constituido por 574 personas mayores de 18 años de edad y de ambos sexos.Resultados: predominaron de manera global los pacientes mayores de 60 años y del sexo femenino. De las 574 personas examinadas, 401 se identificaron con necesidad real de rehabilitación protésica y la ausencia de dientes fue la principal causa. El grupo de edad mayor de 60 años presentó la mayor necesidad real de prótesis. En cuanto al sexo se observó que las mujeres requirieron de algún tratamiento por prótesis al ser este valor superior con respecto a los hombres.Conclusiones: la necesidad real de prótesis estomatológica prevaleció en pacientes del sexo femenino, mayores de 60 años y la principal causa fue la pérdida de dientes(AU)
Background: teeth, related to the functions of mastication, aesthetics, and phonation represent a fundamental element; therefore, the absence of them causes an aggravation on oral health.Objective: to determine the real need for dental prosthesis in the Northern Health Area in Camagüey city.Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in the population from the Northern Health Area of Camagüey city from October 2013 to April 2015. The universe of study was 574 elderly persons over 18 years old and from both sexes.Results: patients over 60 years of age and female were the majority groups. From the 574 people examined, 401 patients presented a real need for prosthetic rehabilitation and the absence of teeth was the main cause. The age group over 60 years had the highest real need for prosthetics. Regarding sex, women required some treatment for prosthesis, because this value was superior to that found in men.Conclusions: the real need for a dental prosthesis prevailed in female patients over 60 years of age and the main cause was tooth loss(AU)
