ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is an inherited autosomal-recessive disorder of impaired mucociliary clearance characterized by chronic respiratory diseases, otolaryngological diseases, central nervous system abnormalities, reproductive system abnormalities, and cardiac function abnormalities. General anesthesia in these patients is associated with a higher incidence of respiratory complications than in patients without the disease. CASE SUMMARY: A 16-year-old male patient was referred to the emergency room complaining of right ankle pain due to distal tibiofibular fracture. Three years prior, he had been diagnosed with PCD. At that time, he had experienced several episodes of pneumonia, sinusitis, and chronic middle ear infections, for which he underwent surgical interventions. At the current admission, he presented with cough and sputum but no other respiratory symptoms. A chest computed tomography scan revealed centrilobular ground-glass opacities in both lower lobes and a calcified nodule in the left lower lobe. For the surgical procedure and postoperative pain management, combined spinal-epidural anesthesia was employed. The patient's postoperative pain score was measured by the numerical rating scale (NRS). On the day of surgery, his NRS was 5 points. By the second postoperative day, the NRS score had decreased to 2-3 points. The epidural catheter was removed on the fourth day following the operation. The patient was subsequently discharged no respiratory complications. CONCLUSION: We performed combined spinal-epidural anesthesia in a patient with PCD. The patient experienced no additional respiratory complications and was discharged with a low NRS score for pain.

ABSTRACT

T cell receptor (TCR) signaling regulates important developmental transitions, partly through induction of the E protein antagonist, Id3. Although normal γδ T cell development depends on Id3, Id3 deficiency produces different phenotypes in distinct γδ T cell subsets. Here, we show that Id3 deficiency impairs development of the Vγ3+ subset, while markedly enhancing development of NKγδT cells expressing the invariant Vγ1Vδ6.3 TCR. These effects result from Id3 regulating both the generation of the Vγ1Vδ6.3 TCR and its capacity to support development. Indeed, the Trav15 segment, which encodes the Vδ6.3 TCR subunit, is directly bound by E proteins that control its expression. Once expressed, the Vγ1Vδ6.3 TCR specifies the innate-like NKγδT cell fate, even in progenitors beyond the normally permissive perinatal window, and this is enhanced by Id3-deficiency. These data indicate that the paradoxical behavior of NKγδT cells in Id3-deficient mice is determined by its stereotypic Vγ1Vδ6.3 TCR complex.

ABSTRACT

Hypoxia is a representative tumor characteristic associated with malignant progression in clinical patients. Engineered in vitro models have led to significant advances in cancer research, allowing for the investigation of cells in physiological environments and the study of disease mechanisms and processes with enhanced relevance. In this study, we propose a U-shape pillar strip for a 3D cell-lumped organoid model (3D-COM) to study the effects of hypoxia on lung cancer in a high-throughput manner. We developed a U-pillar strip that facilitates the aggregation of PDCs mixed with an extracellular matrix to make the 3D-COM in 384-plate array form. The response to three hypoxia-activated prodrugs was higher in the 3D-COM than in the 2D culture model. The protein expression of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α) and HIF-2α, which are markers of hypoxia, was also higher in the 3D-COM than in the 2D culture. The results show that 3D-COM better recapitulated the hypoxic conditions of lung cancer tumors than the 2D culture. Therefore, the U-shape pillar strip for 3D-COM is a good tool to study the effects of hypoxia on lung cancer in a high-throughput manner, which can efficiently develop new drugs targeting hypoxic tumors.

ABSTRACT

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), prevalent among conditions like obesity and diabetes, is globally significant. Existing ultrasound diagnosis methods, despite their use, often lack accuracy and precision, necessitating innovative solutions like AI. This study aims to validate an AI-enhanced quantitative ultrasound (QUS) algorithm for NAFLD severity assessment and compare its performance with Magnetic Resonance Imaging Proton Density Fat Fraction (MRI-PDFF), a conventional diagnostic tool. A single-center cross-sectional pilot study was conducted. Liver fat content was estimated using an AI-enhanced quantitative ultrasound attenuation coefficient (QUS-AC) of Barreleye Inc. with an AI-based QUS algorithm and two conventional ultrasound techniques, FibroTouch Ultrasound Attenuation Parameter (UAP) and Canon Attenuation Imaging (ATI). The results were compared with MRI-PDFF values. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was also assessed. Significant correlation was found between the QUS-AC and the MRI-PDFF, reflected by an R value of 0.95. On other hand, ATI and UAP displayed lower correlations with MRI-PDFF, yielding R values of 0.73 and 0.51, respectively. In addition, ICC for QUS-AC was 0.983 for individual observations. On the other hand, the ICCs for ATI and UAP were 0.76 and 0.39, respectively. Our findings suggest that AC with AI-enhanced QUS could serve as a valuable tool for the non-invasive diagnosis of NAFLD.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The formation of shoots plays a pivotal role in plant organogenesis and productivity. Despite its significance, the underlying molecular mechanism of de novo regeneration has not been extensively elucidated in Capsicum annuum 'Dempsey', a bell pepper cultivar. To address this, we performed a comparative transcriptome analysis focusing on the differential expression in C. annuum 'Dempsey' shoot, callus, and leaf tissue. We further investigated phytohormone-related biological processes and their interacting genes in the C. annuum 'Dempsey' transcriptome based on comparative transcriptomic analysis across five species. RESULTS: We provided a comprehensive view of the gene networks regulating shoot formation on the callus, revealing a strong involvement of hypoxia responses and oxidative stress. Our comparative transcriptome analysis revealed a significant conservation in the increase of gene expression patterns related to auxin and defense mechanisms in both callus and shoot tissues. Consequently, hypoxia response and defense mechanism emerged as critical regulators in callus and shoot formation in C. annuum 'Dempsey'. Current transcriptome data also indicated a substantial decline in gene expression linked to photosynthesis within regenerative tissues, implying a deactivation of the regulatory system governing photosynthesis in C. annuum 'Dempsey'. CONCLUSION: Coupled with defense mechanisms, we thus considered spatial redistribution of auxin to play a critical role in the shoot morphogenesis via primordia outgrowth. Our findings shed light on shoot formation mechanisms in C. annuum 'Dempsey' explants, important information for regeneration programs, and have broader implications for precise molecular breeding in recalcitrant crops.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Radiotherapy is one of the important treatment options for metastatic spinal tumors but is not the definite intervention in all cases, as there are patients who still require surgical treatment because of severe pain or neurologic events after this treatment. We evaluated the perioperative effects of preoperative radiotherapy in these cases as a future guide for surgeons on critical considerations in this period. METHODS: We included 328 patients in this study who had undergone decompression and fusion surgery for metastatic spinal tumors. Patients who underwent surgery with preoperative radiotherapy were designated as the radiotherapy group (group RT, n = 81), and cases of surgery without preoperative radiotherapy were assigned to the non-radiotherapy group (group nRT, n = 247). We compared the demographic, intraoperative, and postoperative factors between these 2 groups. RESULTS: In terms of intraoperative factors, statistically significant differences were evident in operation time, estimated blood loss, and transfusion (RT vs. nRT: 188.1 ± 80.7 minutes vs. 231.2 ± 106.1 minutes, 607.2 ± 532.7 mL vs. 830.1 ± 1324.7 mL, and 30.9% vs. 43.3%, P < 0.001, P < 0.031, and P < 0.048, respectively). With regard to postoperative factors, the incidence of infection, wound problems, and local recurrence were statistically higher in group RT (RT vs. nRT: 6.2% vs. 0.8%, 12.3% vs. 0.8%, 23.4% vs. 13.7%, P = 0.004, P < 0.001, and P = 0.038, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative radiotherapy has the intraoperative advantages of reducing bleeding and shortening the operating time, but postoperative caution is needed because of the possibility of infection, wound problems, and local recurrence increases.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prognostic impact of preoperative MRI features on outcomes for single large hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (≥ 8 cm) after surgical resection. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 151 patients (mean age: 59.2 years; 126 men) with a single large HCC who underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI and surgical resection between 2008 and 2020. Clinical variables, including tumor markers and MRI features (tumor size, tumor margin, and the proportion of hypovascular component on hepatic arterial phase (AP) (≥ 50% vs. < 50% tumor volume) were evaluated. Cox proportional hazards model analyzed overall survival (OS), recurrence-free survival (RFS), and associated factors. RESULTS: Among 151 HCCs, 37.8% and 62.2% HCCs were classified as ≥ 50% and < 50% AP hypovascular groups, respectively. The 5- and 10-year OS and RFS rates in all patients were 62.0%, 52.6% and 41.4%, 38.5%, respectively. Multivariable analysis revealed that ≥ 50% AP hypovascular group (hazard ratio [HR] 1.7, p = 0.048), tumor size (HR 1.1, p = 0.006), and alpha-fetoprotein ≥ 400 ng/mL (HR 2.6, p = 0.001) correlated with poorer OS. ≥ 50% AP hypovascular group (HR 1.9, p = 0.003), tumor size (HR 1.1, p = 0.023), and non-smooth tumor margin (HR 2.1, p = 0.009) were linked to poorer RFS. One-year RFS rates were lower in the ≥ 50% AP hypovascular group than in the < 50% AP hypovascular group (47.4% vs 66.9%, p = 0.019). CONCLUSION: MRI with ≥ 50% AP hypovascular component and larger tumor size were significant factors associated with poorer OS and RFS after resection of single large HCC (≥ 8 cm). These patients require careful multidisciplinary management to determine optimal treatment strategies. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Preoperative MRI showing a ≥ 50% arterial phase hypovascular component and larger tumor size can predict worse outcomes after resection of single large hepatocellular carcinomas (≥ 8 cm), underscoring the need for tailored, multidisciplinary treatment strategies. KEY POINTS: MRI features offer insights into the postoperative prognosis for large hepatocellular carcinoma. Hypovascular component on arterial phase ≥ 50% and tumor size predicted poorer overall survival and recurrence-free survival. These findings can assist in prioritizing aggressive and multidisciplinary approaches for patients at risk for poor outcomes.

Introduction: The long-term effects of fenestration in patients with Fontan circulation remain unclear. We aim to evaluate the fenestration impact on early and late outcomes in patients with extracardiac Fontan (ECF) using a propensity score matching analysis. Methods: We performed an extensive retrospective multicenter clinical data review of the Korean Fontan registry and included 1,233 patients with surgical ECF (779 fenestrated, 454 non-fenestrated). Demographics, baseline, and follow-up data were collected and comprehensively analyzed. Patients were divided into two groups according to the baseline presence or absence of surgical fenestration. Subsequently, patients were sub-divided according to the fenestration status at the last follow-up. Propensity-score matching was performed to account for collected data between the 2 groups using a multistep approach. The primary outcomes were survival and freedom from Fontan failure (FFF). We also looked at postoperative hemodynamics, cardiopulmonary exercise test results, oxygen saturations, and functional status. Results: After propensity-score matching (454 matched pairs), there was no difference in survival or FFF between the 2 groups. However, ECF patients with baseline fenestration had significantly lower oxygen saturation (p = 0.001) and lower functional status (p < 0.001). Patients with fenestration had significantly longer bypass times, higher postoperative central venous pressure, higher postoperative left atrial pressure, and less prolonged pleural effusion in the early postoperative period. The propensity score matching according to the fenestration status at the last follow-up (148 matched pairs) showed that patients with a persistent fenestration had significantly lower oxygen saturation levels (p < 0.001). However there were no intergroup differences in the functional status, survival and FFF. Conclusions: Our results showed no long-term benefits of the Fenestration in terms of survival and FFF. Patients with persistent fenestration showed oxygen desaturation but no difference in exercise intolerance was shown between the 2 groups.

Hepatopancreaticoduodenectomy (HPD) is a controversial surgical technique for the treatment of perihilar cholangiocarcinoma. This study aimed to clarify the mortality, morbidity, and survival outcomes in patients with perihilar cholangiocarcinoma who underwent HPD at a small-volume hepatobiliary-pancreatic center. This retrospective study included 78 patients with perihilar cholangiocarcinoma who underwent HPD (n = 18) or major liver resection with bile duct resection (n = 60) at our center between October 2013 and December 2022. The primary endpoints were the in-hospital morbidity and 90-day mortality rates. The secondary endpoints included the recurrence-free and overall survival rates in both groups. Major complications (Clavien-Dindo grade ≥3) were more common in the HPD group (Group 1, 61.1%) than in the major liver resection group (Group 2; 23.3%, p = 0.03). The 1-, 3- and 5-year overall survival rates for Groups 1 and 2 were 66.7%, 41.7%, and 27.8% and 79.9%, 44.5%, and 22.7%, respectively (p = 0.89). The 1-, 3-, and 5-year recurrence-free survival rates for Groups 1 and 2 were 64.2%, 53.5%, and 35.6% and 85.3%, 46.8%, and 25.0%, respectively (p = 0.41). Although morbidity and mortality after HPD are higher than those after other surgeries, our findings suggest that HPD is a feasible treatment option for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma, even in small-volume centers. However, meticulous pre- and perioperative evaluation of the patient's overall health status, quality of life, and prospective advantages are required.

Purpose: Since 2020, Atezolizumab plus bevacizumab (Ate/Bev) has been the standard first-line therapy for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but long-term treatment studies are limited. This study evaluated the clinical characteristics and effects of Ate/Bev for over 1 year. Materials and Methods: This study included patients with unresectable HCC treated with first-line Ate/Bev between May 2020 and April 2022. Those receiving Ate/Bev for 1 year or more were classified as the long-term treatment group. Results: Of 246 patients, 69 (28.0%) were in the long-term treatment group, which comprised more proportions of intrahepatic tumor burden <25%, ECOG 0, and a lower proportion of portal vein tumor thrombosis than the short-term treatment group. The long-term treatment group had a higher incidence of atezolizumab-related thyroid dysfunction (31.9% vs. 10.7%, p<0.001; median time to onset [mTTO]: 2.8 months), dermatologic toxicity (29.0% vs. 14.7%, p=0.017; mTTO: 3.3 months), bevacizumab-related hypertension (44.9% vs. 22.0%, p=0.001; mTTO: 4.2 months), and proteinuria (69.6% vs. 38.4%, p<0.001; mTTO: 6.8 months), compared to the short-term treatment group. Regarding liver function in the long-term treatment group, patients initially classified as Child-Pugh class A decreased from 87% to 75.4%, and albumin-bilirubin grade 1 decreased from 68.1% to 50.7% after 1 year of treatment. Conclusion: The Ate/Bev long-term treatment group had a lower intrahepatic tumor burden, less portal vein tumor thrombosis, and better performance status and liver function at baseline. Atezolizumab-related immunological adverse events emerged relatively early in treatment compared to the bevacizumab-related. Additionally, some patients demonstrated liver function deterioration during long-term Ate/Bev treatment.

Phytopathogenic Fusarium species causing root and stem rot diseases in susceptible soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) are a major threat to soybean production worldwide. Several Fusarium species have been reported to infect soybean plants in the Republic of Korea, including F. solani, F. oxysporum, F. fujikuroi, and F. graminearum (Cho et al., 2004; Choi et al., 2019; Kang et al., 2020). During the nationwide survey of soybean diseases in 2015, soybean plants showing symptoms of leaf chlorosis, wilting, and shoot death were found in soybean fields in Seosan, Chungnam. Fusarium isolates were obtained from the margins of sterilized necrotic symptomatic and asymptomatic regions of the stem tissues of diseased samples by culturing on potato dextrose agar (PDA). To examine the morphological characteristics, isolates were cultured on PDA at 25°C in the darkness for 10 days. Colonies produced white aerial mycelia with apricot pigments in the medium. Macroconidia were hyaline, slightly curved in shape with 3 or 4 septa, and their average length and width were 34.6± 0.56 µm (31.4 to 37.8 µm) and 4.7±0.16 µm (4.1 to 5.8 µm), respectively (n = 20). Microconidia were elongated, oval with 0 or 1 septum, and their average length and width were 11.4±0.87 and 5.2±0.32 µm, respectively (n = 20). The colonies and conidia exhibited morphological similarities to those of F. falciforme (Xu et al., 2022). Using the primers described by O'Donnell et al. (2008), identity of a representative strain '15-110' was further confirmed by sequencing portions of two genes, the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF-1α) and the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB2). The two sequences (GenBank accession No. OQ992718 and OR060664) of 15-110 were 99% similar to those of two F. falciforme strains, 21BeanYC6-14 (GenBank accession nos. ON375419 and ON331931), and 21BeanYC6-16 (GenBank accession nos. ON697187 and ON331933). To test the pathogenicity, a single-spore isolate was cultured on carnation leaf agar (CLA) at 25℃ for 10 days. Pathogenicity test was performed by root-cutting assays using 14-day-old soybean seedlings of 'Daewon' and 'Taekwang'. Ten-day-old mycelia of 15-110 were collected from the CLA plates by scraping with distilled water, and the spore suspension was filtered and diluted to 1 × 106 conidia/mL. The roots of the soybean seedlings were partially cut and inoculated by soaking in the diluted spore suspension for two hours. The seedlings were then transplanted into 12 cm plastic pots (11 cm in height) and grown in a growth chamber at 25°C, 14h light/10h dark for 2 weeks. The infected plants exhibited wilting, observed brown discoloration on the root, and eventually died within 2 weeks, whereas the control plants inoculated with sterile water remained healthy. F. falciforme 15-110 was reisolated from infected plants, but not from the uninoculated controls. The morphology of the re-isolated fungus on PDA and its target gene sequences were identical to those of the original colony. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of root rot in soybean caused by F. falciforme in the Republic of Korea. Fusarium spp. induce a range of diseases in soybean plants, including root rot, damping-off, and wilt. Given the variable aggressiveness and susceptibility to fungicides among different Fusarium species, it is imperative to identify the Fusarium species posing a threat to soybean production. This understanding is crucial for developing a targeted and tailored disease management strategy to control Fusarium diseases.

ABSTRACT

(1) Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has proven challenging to the management of patients with cancer, particularly those receiving systemic therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with atezolizumab/bevacizumab. (2) Methods: Patients with unresectable HCC who started atezolizumab/bevacizumab treatment between June 2020 and December 2021 at a tertiary cancer center in Korea were included (n = 241) and classified according to their COVID-19 status and severity. (3) Results: Thirty-five (14.5%) patients with unresectable HCC were diagnosed with COVID-19 during atezolizumab/bevacizumab treatment; 26 (74.2%) and nine (25.7%) in the low- and high-severity groups, respectively. The high-severity group showed higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios and lactate dehydrogenase levels. Liver and kidney injuries were observed in 31.4% and 17.1% of total patients, respectively. Liver injury was more prominent in patients with pre-existing liver dysfunction at baseline, who were more prevalent in the high-severity group. Atezolizumab/bevacizumab treatment was delayed by a median of 0 (range, 0-21) day in the low-severity group and 12 (range, 0-35) days in the high-severity group. The high-severity group showed worse post-infection progression-free survival (1.1 vs. 4.8 months, p = 0.017) and overall survival (2.2 months vs. not reached, p = 0.004). (4) Conclusions: Patients with impaired liver function at baseline are more susceptible to high-severity COVID-19, which affects atezolizumab/bevacizumab treatment outcomes.

ABSTRACT

A 45-year-old male patient with spontaneous chylothorax and osteolysis in the right 1st and 2nd ribs was diagnosed with Gorham-Stout disease based on clinical manifestations and bone biopsy. The chylothorax temporarily decreased after a successful selective lymphatic embolization. The patient presented with recurrent chylothorax, mild chest discomfort, and progressive osteolysis (despite administering sirolimus) during the follow-up period of 15 months.

ABSTRACT

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare neoplasms arising from mesenchymal cells. Although most SFTs are benign, rare cases of metastasis have been reported at various sites. Complete surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment for both primary and recurrent or metastatic SFTs. Herein, we present a case of an SFT initially identified in the anterior mediastinum that later developed multiple metastases, even to the thyroid gland. The patient underwent repeated surgical resection and is currently being followed up in an outpatient setting.

Purpose: Analyzing Kawasaki disease epidemiology during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in South Korea using 2012-2020 National Health Insurance Service data. Methods: The incidence of Kawasaki disease for 2012-2020 was investigated to identify changes in incidence after the start of the pandemic. National Health Insurance Service data from the Republic of Korea were used. Kawasaki disease was defined based on the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, the Tenth Revision diagnostic code (M30.3), and the intravenous immunoglobulin prescription code. Prescription history was collected for the following medications: intravenous immunoglobulin, aspirin, corticosteroids, tumor necrosis factor-α antagonist, clopidogrel, and anticoagulation drugs. Results: The Kawasaki disease incidence per 100,000 individuals younger than 5 years was 238.9, 230.0, and 141.2 in 2018, 2019, and 2020, respectively. Regarding the incidence from 2012 to 2020, it was the highest in 2018 and decreased to 141.2 (p < 0.001) in 2020, after the start of the pandemic. In 2020, 28.3% of all patients with KD were infants, a percentage significantly higher than that of the previous year (p < 0.001). There was biphasic seasonality in the monthly Kawasaki disease incidence. The Kawasaki disease incidence was the highest in winter followed by that in early summer. Conclusion: After the start of the pandemic, the Kawasaki disease incidence decreased, and the percentage of patients with Kawasaki disease aged <1 year increased. These findings provide support for the hypothesis suggesting an infectious trigger in Kawasaki disease.

ABSTRACT

Oxidative stress, a driver of liver pathology, remains a challenge in clinical management, necessitating innovative approaches. In this research, we delved into the therapeutic potential of polyphenols for oxidative liver injury using a multiscale network analysis framework. From the Phenol-Explorer database, we curated a list of polyphenols along with their corresponding PubChem IDs. Verified target information was then collated from multiple databases. We subsequently measured the propagative effects of these compounds and prioritized a ranking based on their correlation scores for oxidative liver injury. This result underwent evaluation to discern its effectiveness in differentiating between known and unknown polyphenols, demonstrating superior performance over chance level in distinguishing these compounds. We found that lariciresinol and isopimpinellin yielded high correlation scores in relation to oxidative liver injury without reported evidence. By analyzing the impact on a multiscale network, we found that lariciresinol and isopimpinellin were predicted to offer beneficial effects on the disease by directly acting on targets such as CASP3, NR1I2, and CYP3A4 or by modulating biological functions related to the apoptotic process and oxidative stress. This study not only corroborates the efficacy of identified polyphenols in liver health but also opens avenues for future investigations into their mechanistic actions.

ABSTRACT

Fusarium species are widespread soilborne pathogens that can cause damping-off, root rot, and wilting in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill], subsequently leading to significant yield suppression. Several Fusarium spp. have already been documented for their pathogenicity on soybean plants in the Republic of Korea. The nationwide monitoring of soybean diseases continues to identify new pathogenic Fusarium spp. In 2016, five plant samples at R3-R4 growth stages, showing symptoms of wilting in the upper parts and root rot, were collected in Suwon, Gyeonggi, Republic of Korea. Fungal colonies were obtained from the diseased root samples, with the surface sterilized in 1% sodium hypochlorite for 2 min, rinsed thrice with sterile distilled water, and placed on water agar at 25°C. Five isolates were collected and purified by single-spore isolation. The fungal mycelium was subsequently cultivated on potato dextrose agar for ten days. The isolates produced abundant, aerial, and white mycelium and became purple in old cultures. Macroconidia were slender, falcate to almost straight, usually 3 to 5 septated, and thin-walled. Microconidia were formed in chains from polyphalides, clavate or oval, usually single-celled with a flattened base. These characteristics of isolates were consistent with the description of F. proliferatum (Leslie and Summerrell 2006), and the representative isolate 16-19 was selected for molecular identification to confirm its identity as F. proliferatum. Two evolutionarily conserved genes, the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF-1α) and the second-largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB2) genes, were partially amplified using the primers described by O'Donnell et al. (2008), resulting in nucleotide sequences of 680 and 382 base pairs, respectively. These two sequences (GenBank accession numbers: OQ992720 and OR060666) showed 100 and 99.5% identity to the EF-1α and RPB2 of F. proliferatum A40 (GenBank accession numbers: KP964907 and KP964842). For the Petri-dish pathogenicity assay (Broders et al. 2007), five surface-sterilized seeds were placed on water agar media with either sterile water or actively growing '16-19' culture. After 7 days of incubation in a growth chamber (25°C; 12-hour photoperiod), brown lesions were observed on the roots of the inoculated plants, while no symptoms were observed in the sterile water-treated controls. The experiment was conducted three times. For root-cut pathogenicity assay, conidial suspension (1×106 conidia/ml) of the isolate '16-19' was prepared with harvested mycelia cultured on PDA for 10 days with sterile water. The roots of 10-day-old soybean seedlings were partially cut and soaked in either the suspension or sterile water for 2 hours. The seedlings were transplanted into 12 cm plastic pots (11 cm in height) and grew in a greenhouse (26 ± 3°C, 13-h photoperiod). The experiment followed a completely randomized design with three replicates (i.e. three plants in a pot), and it was repeated twice. The inoculated plants began to wilt 7 days after inoculation, while the sterile water-treated controls remained healthy. Ten days after inoculation, all plants were collected, washed under running tap water, and evaluated for the presence and severity of root rot using a 0-4 scale (Chang et al. 2015). The inoculated plants exhibited reduced vigor and developed dark brown lesions on their roots. F. proliferatum was reisolated from symptomatic root tissues of the infected plants, while not from those of the controls. Its colony and spores were morphologically identical to those of the original isolate. F. proliferatum was previously reported as a causative agent of soybean root rot in the United States (Díaz Arias et al. 2011) and Canada (Chang et al. 2015). This is the first report of soybean root rot caused by F. proliferatum in the Republic of Korea. This finding implies that F. proliferatum may potentially threaten soybean production in the Republic of Korea and suggests that effective disease management strategies should be established for soybean protection against the disease, along with continuous surveillance.

ABSTRACT

Biogas obtained from livestock manure is used as fuel for solid oxide fuel cells. Although H2S is a typical biogas, it is a fatal disadvantage for fuel-cell power generation and, thus, must be removed. In this study, we proposed an effective method for sulfide removal from water using a multi-hole dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) system. In this system, active species, such as ozone, ultraviolet rays, hydroxyl radicals, and hydrogen peroxide, were simultaneously generated. Under optimal conditions, dissolved sulfide (initial concentration: 120 mg/L) was completely degraded within 10 min in air plasma and 6 min in oxygen plasma. Changes in the physical properties of the sulfide-treated water were confirmed by measuring the pH, oxidation-reduction potential, and dissolved oxygen. Results of the by-product analysis showed that sulfide was converted into sulfate by reacting with a large amount of ozone, and the active species were emitted from the multi-hole DBD system. In summary, multi-hole DBD technology has demonstrated merit as a water-contaminant purification technology and for the removal of dissolved sulfide.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between radiological indices of shoulder balance (SB) and cosmetic indices of shoulder deformity in patients with Lenke type 2 adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and to determine the extent to which patient-reported outcomes (PROs) correlate with these measurements. Current management decisions and outcomes for SB in AIS are primarily based on radiological measurements. It is crucial to understand how these radiological parameters and cosmetic indices relate to patient satisfaction. METHODS: The authors analyzed the preoperative radiological and photographic indices of SB, along with PROs, in patients with Lenke type 2 AIS. Lateral SB parameters included the radiological shoulder height (RSH) and clavicle angle, while medial SB parameters included the first rib angle and T1 tilt angle. Photographic indices included the shoulder height angle (SHA), axilla height angle (AHA), and the left/right trapezius angle (LRTA) ratio. The authors assessed the self-image, mental health, and total score domains of the Korean version of the 22-item Scoliosis Research Society questionnaire. RESULTS: In their analysis of Lenke type 2 patients, the authors found that correlation coefficients between radiological measurements and photographic indices ranged from -0.25 to 0.47, among which only lateral SB including clavicle angle and RSH showed a significant correlation with anterior and posterior photographic indices. No statistically significant correlations were found between radiological measurements and PROs. Anterior photographic indices including SHA and AHA significantly correlated with all three PROs (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Radiological shoulder parameters did not accurately reflect the perceived SB. Anterior photographic indices were reliable for evaluating clinical SB in patients with Lenke type 2 AIS and correlated with PROs. Spine surgeons may benefit from paying more attention to anterior photographic indices when making surgical decisions regarding clinical SB.
