ABSTRACT

Acquired Brain Injuries are one of the leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide. One of the most frequent sequelae is motor impairment of the upper limbs, which affects people's functionality and quality of life. Following the discovery of mirror neurons, new techniques were developed based on the mechanisms of neuronal plasticity, such as motor imagery (MI) and action observation (AO). We propose a protocol using electromyographic recordings of forearm muscles in people who have suffered a stroke during an MI task and an AO task. Three different experimental conditions will be studied during the electromyographic recordings: control recording, recording during MI, and recording during AO. Understanding the muscle activation in each technique will allow us to develop future protocols and intervention plans, improving the quality of care for people who have suffered a stroke.

ABSTRACT

Thermoelectric materials have garnered significant interest for their potential to efficiently convert waste heat into electrical energy at room temperature without moving parts or harmful emissions. This study investigated the impact of the HOMO-LUMO (H-L) gap on the thermoelectric properties of three distinct classes of organic compounds: conjugated aromatics (isoindigos (IIGs)), quinoidal molecules (benzodipyrrolidones (BDPs)), and donor-acceptor systems (bis(pyrrol-2-yl)squaraines (BPSs)). These compounds were chosen for their structural simplicity and linear π-conjugated conductance paths, which promote high electrical conductance and minimize complications from quantum interference. Single-molecule thermoelectric measurements revealed that despite their low H-L gaps, the Seebeck coefficients of these compounds remain low. The alignment of the frontier orbitals relative to the Fermi energy was found to play a crucial role in determining the Seebeck coefficients, as exemplified by the BDP compounds. Theoretical calculations support these findings and suggest that anchor group selection could further enhance the thermoelectric behavior of these types of molecules.

BACKGROUND: Fiber optic dosimetry (FOD) has emerged as a useful technique that can be used in those cases when intracavitary, real time, high spatial resolution dose assessment is required. Among the several factors characterizing a dosimeter, angular response of FOD probes has to be assessed in order to consider possible clinical application. PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to characterize the angular response of a FOD probe based on a cylindrical shaped YVO4 :Eu3+ scintillator under irradiation with a 6 MV photon beam generated by a linear accelerator (LINAC). METHODS: A FOD probe was irradiated inside a plastic phantom using a 6 MV LINAC photon beam at different azimuthal angles (0° to 360°, 15° steps). Scintillation output was measured with a photomultiplier tube. Similar measurements were performed with a second FOD probe having an optical filter interposed between the scintillator and the fiber. Monte Carlo simulations using PENELOPE were carried out in order to interpret the observed results. RESULTS: The FOD output was symmetrical with respect to the scintillator axis. For the unfiltered probe, the signal was maximum at rear incidence (0°) and steadily decreased down to its minimum value at frontal incidence (180°) having a signal ratio of 37%. The output of the filtered probe showed a plateau from 15° up to 115°. The signal was maximum at 60° and minimum at 180° having a signal ratio of 16%. Monte Carlo simulations predicted symmetry of the deposited dose about 0° and 90°, which contrasts with experimental findings. CONCLUSIONS: Photoluminescence (PL) of the scintillator induced by the Cherenkov light increases the angular dependence. Radiation attenuation inside the scintillator and partial light collection of the scintillation yield by the optical fiber (OF) are responsible for asymmetrical response. Results from this study should be considered in order to minimize angular dependence in FOD.

ABSTRACT

Light pollution represents a widespread long-established human-made disturbance and an important threat to nocturnal pollination. Distance from the niche centroid where optimal environmental conditions join may be related to species sensitivity to habitat change. We estimated the environmental suitability of the plant species Erythrostemon gilliesii and of its guild of hawkmoth pollinators. We considered the overlap of suitability maps of both partners as the environmental suitability of the interaction. We used a three-year record of ten E. gilliesii populations to calculate pollination intensity as the number of individuals that received pollen per population. In addition, for each population, we measured the distance to the high light pollution source around a buffer of 15 km radius. Finally, we predicted pollination intensity values for environmental suitability ranging from 0 to 1, and distance to high light pollution sources ranging from 0 to 56 Km. Pollination intensity decreased along an axis of increasing environmental suitability and increased with distance to sources of light pollution. The highest values of pollination intensity were observed at greatest distances to sources of light pollution and where environmental suitability of the interaction was lowest. The prediction model evidenced that, when environmental suitability was lowest, pollination intensity increased with distance to sources of high light pollution. However, when environmental suitability was intermediate or high, pollination intensity decreased away and until 28 km from the sources of high light pollution. Beyond 28 km from the sources of high light pollution, pollination intensity remained low and constant. Populations under conditions of low environmental suitability might be more likely to respond to disturbances that affect pollinators than populations under conditions of high environmental suitability.

ABSTRACT

In times when environmental concerns are on the rise and the search of ways to reduce waste generation and to create a circular economy is booming, Nature Based Solutions (NBSs) play a very important role. Vegetation Filters (VFs) are a type of Land Application System (LAS) in which wastewater is used to irrigate a forestry plantation to treat the water and produce biomass. VFs show multiple benefits that render this technology a suitable solution for wastewater treatment, especially for scattered populations or isolated buildings that lack of connection to sewer systems. This review aims to provide a comprehensive state of the art of VF implementation, highlighting the do's and don'ts for a successful performance focusing on those factors that are essential to water treatment. Results show that VFs have a great treatment capacity when all involving factors are considered, and their efficiency tends to increase with time, as the VF develops and "gets older". Indeed, the presence of fine-textured soils, the selection of a proper vegetation species, the use of pre-treated wastewater and a water balance-based irrigation schedule alternating wetting and -drying cycles are all factors that help to achieve the best performance. However, it is necessary to design and follow a simple but rigorous operation and maintenance schedule to avoid system failure, which could lead to NO3-N leaching towards groundwater.

ABSTRACT

In urban and periurban areas, agricultural soils are often irrigated with surface water containing a complex mixture of contaminants due to wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent discharges. The unplanned water reuse of these resources for crop irrigation can represent a pathway for contaminant propagation and a potential health risk due to their introduction in the food chain. The aim of this study is to provide data about the magnitude of attenuation processes and plant uptake, allowing for a reliable assessment of contaminant transfer among compartments and of the human health risk derived from unplanned water reuse activities. Target compounds are 25 pharmaceuticals, including transformation products (TPs). The field site is an agricultural parcel where maize is irrigated by a gravity-fed surface system supplied by the Jarama river, a water course strongly impacted by WWTP effluents. Throughout the 3-month irrigation period, irrigation water and water infiltrating through the vadose zone were sampled. The agricultural soil was collected before and after the irrigation campaign, and maize was sampled before harvesting. All selected compounds are detected in irrigation water (up to 12,867 ng L-1). Metformin, two metamizole TPs and valsartan occur with the highest concentrations. For most pharmaceuticals, results demonstrate a high natural attenuation during soil infiltration (>60%). However, leached concentrations of some compounds can be still at concern level (>400 ng L-1). A persistent behavior is observed for carbamazepine, carbamazepine epoxide and sulfamethoxazole. Pharmaceutical soil contents are in the order of ng g-1 and positively ionized compounds accumulate more effectively. Results also indicate the presence of a constant pool of drugs in soils. Only neutral and cationic pharmaceuticals are taken up in maize tissues, mainly in the roots. There is an insignificant threat to human health derived from maize consumption however, additional toxicity tests are recommended for 4AAA and acetaminophen.

ABSTRACT

Most prospective studies of bone mineral density (BMD) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients have been of relatively short duration, with a maximum of 6 years. To describe long-term changes in BMD in women with SLE and identify risk factors associated with BMD loss. We retrospectively evaluated 132 adult Mexican-Mestizo women with SLE who underwent dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Demographic and clinical data were collected and BMD at the lumbar spine (L1-L4) and total hip were collected at baseline and during the follow up. At baseline, the mean age of participants was 43.4 ± 12.5 years, 50.8% had osteopenia and 11% osteoporosis. The median follow-up was 13 (IQR 10.2-14.0) years. During follow up, 79% of patients used glucocorticoid (GCT). The mean percentage of changes in BMD during follow up were: - 14.03 ± 11.25% (- 1.49%/year) at the lumbar spine, and - 15.77 ± 11.57% (- 1.78%/year) at the total hip, with significant changes (p < 0.001 for both comparisons). Multivariate analysis showed older age, GCT use at baseline, and transition to the menopause during the follow-up were significantly associated with greater reductions in BMD. This retrospective longitudinal study found significant BMD loss at the lumbar spine and hip. Older age, menopausal transition and GCT use were independently associated with BMD decline in women with SLE.

ABSTRACT

Vegetation Filters (VFs) can be a sustainable solution to treat wastewater and to recover resources such as nutrients, water and biomass from small municipalities and isolated dwellings. However, under certain conditions, the leakage of nutrients, especially of nitrate, can represent a limitation. The addition of two sustainable soil amendments, woodchips and biochar, has been tested as a strategy to improve nutrient attenuation in VFs increasing sorption sites and microbial activity. To this end, unsaturated infiltration and batch experiments have been carried out at laboratory scale. The systems for infiltration experiments contain natural soil, natural soil amended with woodchips and natural soil amended with biochar. To determine the sorption capacity of NH4+, batch tests were performed using an amendment/SWW ratio of 1:20 and an NH4+ initial concentration ranging from 30 to 600 mg L-1. Results from the infiltration experiments show a high attenuation (~95%) of total phosphorous (TP) independently of the amendments. Different behaviour is observed for total nitrogen (TN). The removal of this species is obtained only in the soil amended with woodchips (>85%) whereas the natural soil alone and the soil with biochar have no impact on TN attenuation. In these two porous media, all the NH4+ input concentration is transformed to NO3- that infiltrates without further reactions. According to batch experiment results, the potential role of biochar in the nutrient attenuation is limited to sorption processes (Kd (NH4+) = 21.37-193.18 L kg-1). Woodchips act primarily as a labile source of carbon promoting biodegradation, being more effective for nutrient attenuation than the sorption capacity of biochar.

ABSTRACT

The use of surface water impacted by wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents for crop irrigation is a form of unplanned water reuse. Natural attenuation processes can buffer contamination spreading. However, this practice can promote the exposure of crops to contaminants of emerging concern, such as pharmaceuticals, trace metals (TMs) and metalloids, posing a risk to health. This research aimed to evaluate the presence of 50 pharmaceuticals, some transformation products, 7 TMs and a metalloid in the water-sediment-soil-plant system, and their potential to be bioaccumulated into edible parts of plants, as a result of the unplanned water reuse. The study site consists of an extensive agricultural land downstream Madrid city (Spain) where surface water, strongly impacted by WWTP effluents, is applied through gravity-based systems to cultivate mainly maize. Sampling campaigns were conducted to collect WWTP effluent, surface and irrigation water, river sediments, agricultural soils and maize fruits. Results demonstrate the ubiquitous presence of several pharmaceuticals. The concentration pattern in irrigation water did not resemble the pattern of contents in soils and plants. The pharmaceuticals included in the EU surface water watch lists were quantified in the lowest concentration range (macrolide antibiotics, ciprofloxacin) or were not detected (most of the hormones). Therefore, hormones do not represent an emerging risk in our scenario. The TMs and the metalloid in water and agricultural soils should not arise any concern. Whereas, their presence in the river sediments may have an adverse impact on aquatic ecosystems. Only acetaminophen, ibuprofen, carbamazepine, nicotine, Zn, Cu and Ni were quantified in corn grains. Calculated parameters to assess bioaccumulation and health risk indicate that neither pharmaceuticals nor TMs pose a threat to human health due to consumption of maize cultivated in the area. Results highlight the need to include different environmental matrices when assessing contaminant fate under real field-scale conditions.

ABSTRACT

Waterfowl hunting in Argentina is a profitable industry that attracts hunters from all over the world. Most hunting occurs as high-end hunting tourism, through which registered outfitters service predominantly foreign clients on private lands. Lead pollution from hunting ammunition is increasingly recognized as a significant local problem, impacting wildlife, aquatic and terrestrial habitats, and extending to vulnerable human rural communities. Regulatory frameworks that restrict lead shot use are a budding success story but remain challenged by their constrained geographic range and limited compliance rooted in unavailable nontoxic ammunition. Changes in hunting practices in Argentina are long overdue.

The use of the soil can alter its functionality and influence the (bio)availability of any contaminants present. Our study considers two types of agricultural soils, rainfed and olive soils, managed according to conventional practices that apply contaminants directly to the soil (fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, etc.) and receive contaminants from the atmosphere (traffic, industry, etc.); and a forest soil that is not subject to these agricultural practices. In this scenario, we consider a mixture of 16 trace elements (As, Ba, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Sb, Sn, V and Zn), since their interactions with the soil can produce synergistic and/or antagonistic effects that are not considered in most studies. We studied whether the content and (bio)availability of low concentrations of a mixture of trace elements affect the soil functionality in terms of the activity of some key enzymes We analysed the total, potentially and immediately available fractions, the soil parameters and soil enzyme activity. The results show that the functionality of the soils studied was affected despite the low concentrations of trace elements. The highest concentrations of total trace elements and available fractions were found in forest soils compared to the other two uses. Soil enzyme activity is best explained by the potentially available fraction of a mixture of trace elements and physico-chemical soil variables. In our study, pH, total nitrogen, organic carbon and fine mineral particles (silt and clay) had an influence on soil enzyme activity and the (bio)available fractions of trace elements.

The present article looks at the association between the epidemiological history of women infected with Trypanosoma cruzi and the risk of vertical transmission. Eighty-three chronically infected mothers and their 237 children were studied, using a cohort design. All patients reside in Santa Fe city, Argentina. Twenty-five women transmitted the infection to 38 children. The potential risk factors evaluated in the mothers were exposure to vector transmission, blood transfusion history, maternal seropositivity, parasitemia and age at birth of the child. 72% (18/25) of the mothers who transmitted the infection to their children, had little or no contact with the vector, while only 28% (7/25) of the mothers presented a history of medium or high risk of vector infection. The differences were significant (p < 0.05). Forty-one percent of the women who presented maternal history as the probable route of infection, transmitted the parasite to more than one child (1.86 ± 0.33; CI95% = 1.03-2.68). In addition, the most frequent history, among the women who transmitted the disease to their children, was the absence of exposure to vector transmission and transfusion with unknown maternal serology. The route of infection was probably transplacental. These observations suggest that there are family genetic characteristics involved in vertical transmission. The parasite was found in 71% of the mothers who transmitted the infection to their children and were able to perform xenodiagnoses. After controlling for the other variables, the logistic regression analysis showed that xenodiagnosis (+) is a risk factor for congenital transmission; the relative risk was 12.2 (95% confidence interval: 2.9 - 50.1). No differences were found when analyzing the mother's age and transfusion history. The highest risk of congenital transmission was associated with detectable parasitemia and less maternal exposure to the vector.

Objetivo: El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar la prevalencia de dolor irruptivo (DI) en pacientes ambulatorios con dolor crónico de origen no oncológico y caracterizar la fisiopatología, localización, intensidad y frecuencia de los episodios de DI. Material y métodos: Estudio observacional, prospectivo y no intervencionista realizado en 16 unidades de dolor ambulatorias de hospitales de Andalucía y Ceuta. Se preguntó a los pacientes consecutivos elegibles si experimentan DI definido como "una exacerbación transitoria del dolor que ocurre espontáneamente, o en relación con un desencadenante predecible o impredecible específico, a pesar del dolor de base estable y controlado". En cada día de la encuesta, los dos primeros pacientes que confirmaron DI fueron preguntados sobre las características clínicas de su PTP (etiología, inicio, intensidad, frecuencia y tratamiento). Resultados: Se realizó un cribaje a un total de 3209 pacientes con dolor crónico no oncológico para identificar a 1118 pacientes con DI, lo que representó una prevalencia del 36 %. Se obtuvieron las características del DI de 350 pacientes: la intensidad media fue de 8,3 (± 1,4) en una Escala Analógica Visual (EVA), con una media de 2 episodios/24 horas (rango 1-5/24 h). El mecanismo del dolor fue mixto en 149 (42,6 %), neuropático en 91 (26 %) y nociceptivo en 72 (20,6 %) de los pacientes. Se encontró correlación positiva entre una mayor intensidad de DI con el nivel de dolor basal (r = 0,243, p < 0,001), y el número de crisis diarias de DI (r = 0,123, p = 0,003), ambas estadísticamente significativas. El 78 % de los pacientes estaba en tratamiento con opioides. Los más frecuentes fueron el citrato de fentanilo (52,6 %) y el tramadol (17,4 %). Conclusiones: La tasa de prevalencia del DI en pacientes con dolor crónico no oncológico es superior a un tercio de los pacientes atendidos en las unidades ambulatorias de dolor hospitalario en España. El DI provoca niveles reducidos de funcionalidad, trastornos psicológicos y un aumento del gasto asistencial. La clave del tratamiento es la individualización


Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of breakthrough pain (BTP) in ambulatory patients with non-cancer chronic pain in Spain and to characterize physiopathology, location, intensity and frequency of BTP episodes. Methods: Prospective, non-interventional, observational study conducted in 16 pain units of hospitals of Andalusia and Ceuta. Eligible consecutive patients were are asked if they experience BTP defined as "a transient exacerbation of pain that occurs either spontaneously, or in relation to a specific predictable or unpredictable trigger, despite stable and controlled background pain". At each survey day, the first two patients reporting BTP were further interrogated on the clinical characteristics of their BTP (etiology, onset, intensity, frequency and treatment). Results: A total of 3,209 patients with non-cancer chronic pain were screened to identify 1,118 patients with BTP, which represented a prevalence of 36 %. BTP characteristics were retrieved from 350 patients: mean BTP intensity was 8.3 (± 1.4) on a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), with a mean of 2 episodes/24 hour (range 1-5/24 h). Pain mechanism was mixed in 149 (42.6 %), neuropathic in 91 (26 %) and nociceptive in 72 in (20.6 %) of patients. Significant correlation was found between BTP intensity and both higher background pain (r = 0.243, p < 0.001), and daily BTP episodes frequency (r = 0.123, p = 0.003). 78 % of the patients were on opioid treatment. The most frequent were fentanyl citrate (52.6 %) and tramadol (17.4 %). Conclusions: The prevalence rate of BTP in patients with chronic non-oncologic pain is higher than one-third of the patients seen in outpatient hospital pain units in Spain. BTP causes reduced levels of functionality, psychological disorders, and an increase in health care expenditure. Individualization is the key to treatment

Las propiedades fisico‐químicas de los suelos que se encuentran en la parte superficial de las capas freáticas, juegan un papel muy importante en las características hidroquímicas de las aguas subyacentes, pues fenómenos como disolución, hidrolisis y procesos de oxido‐reducción de fracciones minerales y orgánicas de los suelos influyen de forma significativa en la composición de las mismas. Además, textura, estructura y materia orgánica del suelo son factores claves en la regulación del régimen hidrodinámico. En este trabajo analizamos las características edáficas de cuatro suelos muy significativos de los alrededores del Balneario de San Nicolás, ubicado en Alhama de Almería, Alpujarra Almeriense, situada a 450 msnm en la ladera norte de la Sierra de Gádor. Son suelos con escaso desarrollo, tipo AC, formados a partir de materiales sedimentarios constituidos por margas arenosas, calcarenitas, dolomías y yeso, los situados en las proximidades del Valle del Andarax, y por materiales de derrubios de ladera y pie de monte, con predominio de cuarcita, dolomías, calizas y calizas margosas, los situados en la Sierra de Gádor. Los suelos son carbonatados y están saturados, siendo el calcio el catión mayoritario. Presentan pHs básicos, bajo contenido en materia orgánica y texturas gruesas. Cuarzo, calcita, dolomita y yeso son los minerales más abundantes entre los no laminares, y son las micas los filosilicatos presentes en mayor proporción. El predominio de texturas gruesas y la perdida de estructura en los horizontes profundos son determinantes en el grado de infiltración. Se han incluido en las unidades Regosoles y Calcisoles (AU)


The physico‐chemical properties of soils adjacent to aquifers play an essential role in the hydrochemical characteristics of the underlying waters. Thus, phenomena such as dissolution, hydrolysis and oxide‐reduction processes of the mineral and organic fractions of soils may have a significant influence on the composition of these waters. Furthermore, soil texture, structure and organic matter are key factors regulating the hydrodynamic regime. In this work, the edaphic characteristics of four highly representative soils located in the thermal environment of San Nicolas in the Alhama de Almería municipality of the Alpujarra Almeriense region were analyzed. The area is part of the northern side of the Sierra de Gádor at an altitude of 450 masl. They are poorly developed soils, mainly AC profiles. Soils in the vicinity of the Andarax Valley are formed on sedimentary materials constituted by sandy marls, calcarenites, dolomites and gypsum, and those in the Sierra de Gádor developed on debris material from hillside and piedmont and mainly integrated by quartzite, dolomites, limestones and marly limestones. Soils are carbonated and saturated, with calcium being the major cation. They have basic pH values, low organic matter content and coarse textures. Quartz, calcite, dolomite and gypsum are the prominent minerals among the non‐laminar ones, and micas among the phyllosilicates. The predominance of coarse textures and the loss of structure in the deep horizons are decisive in their infiltration capacity. They were classified as Regosols and Calcisols (AU)

ABSTRACT

Typha angustifolia, Juncus maritimus, and Eleocharis palustris were evaluated for de-icing salt removal from runoff water. Plants were exposed to a range of de-icing salt levels (0.2, 0.7, 4, 8, and 13 dS m(-1)) in laboratory-scale subsurface constructed wetlands (CWs) for 2 months under greenhouse conditions. Effluent characteristics, plant height, biomass, and Cl and Na removal rates and uptake were monitored. More water volume was retained in CWs of T. angustifolia (∼60 %) than of J. maritimus and E. palustris (∼37.5 %), which accounted for the electrical conductivity increase in effluents (1.3-1.9-fold). Based on the NaCl removal rate, T. angustifolia showed the greatest phytodesalinization ability (31-60 %) with the highest removal at the lowest salt levels (0.2-0.7 dS m(-1)), followed by J. maritimus (22-36 %) without differences in removal among levels, and E. palustris (3-26 %) presenting a removal rate highly decreased with increasing salt levels. Plant height and biomass were stimulated at low de-icing salt levels, but, at higher levels, T. angustifolia and E. palustris growth was inhibited (tolerance index ∼67 and 10 %, respectively, in the worst cases). Salt amounts in aboveground biomass in g m(-2) differed among levels and ranged as follows: 13.6-29.1 (Cl), 4.2-9.3 (Na; T. angustifolia); 7.0-12.0 (Cl), 2.7-6.4 (Na; J. maritimus); and 0.9-7.6 (Cl), 0.3-1.6 (Na; E. palustris). Chloride and Na translocation decreased with de-icing salt increase in T. angustifolia, while no significant differences were found in J. maritimus, which is interesting for harvesting purposes.

BACKGROUND: Since there is still an unmet need for potent adjuvant strategies for renal cancer patients with high progression risk after surgery, several targeted therapies are currently evaluated in this setting. We analyzed whether inclusion criteria of contemporary trials (ARISER, ASSURE, SORCE, EVEREST, PROTECT, S-TRAC, ATLAS) correctly identify high-risk patients. METHODS: The study group comprised 8873 patients of the international CORONA-database after surgery for non-metastatic renal cancer without any adjuvant treatment. Patients were divided into potentially eligible high-risk and assumable low-risk patients who didn't meet inclusion criteria of contemporary adjuvant clinical trials. The ability of various inclusion criteria for disease-free survival (DFS) prediction was evaluated by Harrell's c-index. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 53 months 15.2% of patients experienced recurrence (5-year-DFS 84%). By application of trial inclusion criteria, 24% (S-TRAC) to 47% (SORCE) of patients would have been eligible for enrollment. Actual recurrence rates of eligible patients ranged between 29% (SORCE) and 37% (S-TRAC) opposed to <10% in excluded patients. Highest Hazard Ratio for selection criteria was proven for the SORCE-trial (HR 6.42; p < 0.001), while ASSURE and EVEREST reached the highest c-index for DFS prediction (both 0.73). In a separate multivariate Cox-model, two risk-groups were identified with a maximum difference in 5-year-DFS (94% vs. 61%). CONCLUSION: Results of contemporary adjuvant clinical trials will not be comparable as inclusion criteria differ significantly. Risk assessment according to our model might improve patient selection in clinical trials by defining a high-risk group (28% of all patients) with a 5-year-recurrence rate of almost 40%.

ABSTRACT

Abandonment of vineyards after uprooting has dramatically increased in last decades in Mediterranean countries, often followed by vegetation expansion processes. Inadequate management strategies can have negative consequences on soil quality. We studied how the age and type of vegetation cover and several environmental characteristics (lithology, soil properties, vineyard slope and so on) after vineyard uprooting and abandonment contribute to the variation patterns in total, HAc (acetic acid-method, HAc) and EDTA-extractable (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid-method) concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in soils. We sampled 141 points from vineyards and abandoned vineyard Mediterranean soils recolonized by natural vegetation in recent decades. The contribution of several environmental variables (e.g. age and type of vegetation cover, lithology, soil properties and vineyard slope) to the total and extractable concentrations of metals was evaluated by canonical ordination based on redundancy analysis, considering the interaction between both environmental and response variables. The ranges of total metal contents were: 0.01-0.15 (Cd), 2.6-34 (Cu), 6.6-30 (Pb), and 29-92mgkg(-1) (Zn). Cadmium (11-100%) had the highest relative extractability with both extractants, and Zn and Pb the lowest. The total and EDTA-extractable of Cd, Pb and Zn were positively related to the age of abandonment, to the presence of Agrostis castellana and Retama sphaerocarpa, and to the contents of Fe-oxides, clay and organic matter (OM). A different pattern was noted for Cu, positively related to vineyard soils. Soil properties successfully explained HAc-extractable Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn but the age and type of vegetation cover lost significance. Clay content was negatively related to HAc-extractable Cu and Pb; and OM was positively related to HAc-Cd and Zn. In conclusion, the time elapsed after vineyard uprooting, and subsequent land abandonment, affects the soil content and availability of metals, and this impact depended on the colonizing plant species and soil properties.

El suelo es la primera barrera natural que han de atravesar los compuestos depositados en la superficie terrestre para llegar a los acuíferos. Conocer las propiedades fisicoquímicas que intervienen en los procesos de infiltración, así como saber el tipo de suelo, son parámetros esenciales que nos permite analizar el riesgo de contaminación que afecta la composición del agua subterránea. En este trabajo se describen los factores ambientales de la zona, y se analizan algunas de las propiedades químicas, físicas y mineralógicas de cuatro suelos característicos de los alrededores del Balneario de Villavieja de Nules (Castellón de la Plana). Para ello se ha obtenido el contenido en: C, N, pH, CE, CIC y CO3 2‐ , así como se ha determinado: textura, densidad aparente, densidad real, porosidad, parámetros hidráulicos y la mineralogía de la fracción arcilla. De los resultados se desprende que las características ambientales de la zona, junto a los tipos de suelos analizados ralentizan los procesos de flujos descendentes (AU)


Soil i s the first natural barrier that has to be crossed by the compounds deposited on the Earth's surface to reach aquifers. Knowing about the physicochemical properties involved in the infiltration processes, as well as the soil type, are essential parameters which allows us to analyze the risk of contamination affecting the composition of groundwater. In this work, the environmental factors of the area around the Balneario de Villavieja Nules (Castellón de la Plana) are described, and some of the chemical, physical, and mineralogical characteristics of four soils are analyzed. Most particularly C, N, pH, CE, CIC y CO3 2‐ , as well as texture, bulk density, particle density, porosity, hydraulic parameters and clay fraction mineralogy were determined. The results showed that the environmental characteristics of the area, together with the types of soil analyzed slow down the water flow processes (AU)

ABSTRACT

The investigation of scintillation properties of europium doped yttrium orthovanadate shows the suitability of this material for fiber-based dose rate measurements. All measurements were carried out with a 6 MV Varian linear accelerator. The temperature dependence of the signal is lower than that of the plastic scintillators reported so far. By measuring the afterglow of probes between Linac-pulses, the signal due to the stem effect can be successfully eliminated. Comparison of depth dose profiles in a water phantom for radiation field dimensions between 1 x 1 cm(2) and 10 x 10 cm(2) shows that the probes are suitable for small fields having dimensions up to 1 x 1 cm(2). The high light yield of probes having dimensions of 1 mm opens up the possibility for their use in spatially confined radiation fields, such as in intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and volume-modulated radiation therapy (VMAT).

BACKGROUND: The current TNM system for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) merges perirenal fat invasion (PFI) and renal vein invasion (RVI) as stage pT3a despite limited evidence concerning their prognostic equivalence. In addition, the prognostic value of PFI compared to pT1-pT2 tumors remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the prognostic significance of PFI, RVI, and tumor size in pT1-pT3a RCC. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Data for 7384 pT1a-pT3a RCC patients were pooled from 12 centers. Patients were grouped according to stages and PFI/RVI presence as follows: pT1-2N0M0 (n=6137; 83.1%), pT3aN0M0 + PFI (n=1036; 14%), and pT3aN0M0 (RVI ± PFI; n=211; 2.9%). INTERVENTION: Radical nephrectomy or nephron-sparing surgery (NSS) (1992-2010). OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Cancer-specific survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional-hazards regression models, as well as sensitivity and discrimination analyses, were used to evaluate the impact of clinicopathologic parameters on cancer-specific mortality (CSM). RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS: Compared to stage pT1-2, patients with stage pT3a RCC were significantly more often male (59.4% vs 53.1%) and older (64.9 vs 62.1 yr), more often had clear cell RCC (85.2% vs 77.7%), Fuhrman grade 3-4 (29.4% vs 13.4%), and tumor size >7 cm (39.1% vs 13%), and underwent NSS less often (7.5% vs 36.6%; all p<0.001). According to multivariate analysis, CSM was significantly higher for the PFI and RVI ± PFI groups compared to pT1-2 patients (hazard ratio [HR] 1.94 and 2.12, respectively; p<0.001), whereas patients with PFI only and RVI ± PFI did not differ (HR 1.17; p=0.316). Tumor size instead enhanced CSM by 7% per cm in stage pT3a (HR 1.07; p<0.001) with a 7 cm cutoff yielding the highest prediction accuracy. CONCLUSIONS: Since the prognostic impact of PFI and RVI on CSM seems to be comparable, merging both as stage pT3a RCC might be justified. Enhanced prognostic discrimination of stage pT3a RCC appears to be possible by applying a tumor size cutoff of 7 cm within an alternative staging system. PATIENT SUMMARY: Prognosis prediction for patients with localized renal cell carcinoma up to stage pT3a can be enhanced by including tumor size with a cutoff of 7 cm as an additional parameter in the TNM classification system.
