ABSTRACT

Escalating biodiesel production led to a surplus of glycerol, prompting its exploration as a valuable resource in industrial applications. Electrochemical systems have been studied, specifically employing noble metal catalysts like palladium for glycerol electrooxidation. Despite numerous studies on Pd-based catalysts for glycerol electrooxidation, a comprehensive analysis addressing critical questions related to the economic feasibility, global sourcing of Pd, and the thematic cohesion of publications in this field is lacking. Moreover, a standardized framework for comparing the results of various studies is absent, hindering progress on glycerol technologies. This critical overview navigates the evolution of Pd-based catalysts for glycerol electrooxidation, examining catalytic activity, stability, and potential applications. It critically addresses the geographical sources of Pd, the motivation behind glycerol technology exploration, thematic coherence in existing publications, and the meaningful comparison of results. It correlates the use of Pd-based catalysts with the natural source of Pd and the origin of glycerol derived from biodiesel. The proposed standardized approach for comparing electrochemical parameters and establishing experimental protocols provides a foundation for meaningful study comparisons. This critical overview underscores the need to address fundamental questions to accelerate the transition of glycerol technologies from laboratories to practical applications.

ABSTRACT

Etched fiber Bragg gratings (EFBGs) have been widely employed for refractive index (RI) measurements that can be used to monitor sugar consumption during the fermentation of alcoholic beverages. EFBGs are obtained by removing the cladding of a fiber Bragg grating, which is traditionally performed by a chemical attack with hydrogen fluoride, an extremely hazardous corrosive substance that causes severe wounds and even death. To overcome such drawbacks, this technical note presents a simple, practical, and low cost method for the diameter reduction of single mode optical fibers by mechanical polishing, employing a small scale computer numerical control device and an ad hoc 3D-printed rod. The sensor probe obtained was tested using sucrose aqueous solutions with RIs between 1.333 and 1.394, measured in an Abbe refractometer. The results show a linear shift of the Bragg wavelength with respect to RI with a correlation of 0.928.

ABSTRACT

This research employs displacement fields photogrammetrically captured on the surface of a solid or structure to estimate real-time stress distributions it undergoes during a given loading period. The displacement fields are determined based on a series of images taken from the solid surface while it experiences deformation. Image displacements are used to estimate the deformations in the plane of the beam surface, and Poisson's Method is subsequently applied to reconstruct these surfaces, at a given time, by extracting triangular meshes from the corresponding points clouds. With the aid of the measured displacement fields, the Boundary Element Method (BEM) is considered to evaluate stress values throughout the solid. Herein, the unknown boundary forces must be additionally calculated. As the photogrammetrically reconstructed deformed surfaces may be defined by several million points, the boundary displacement values of boundary-element models having a convenient number of nodes are determined based on an optimized displacement surface that best fits the real measured data. The results showed the effectiveness and potential application of the proposed methodology in several tasks to determine real-time stress distributions in structures.

ABSTRACT

The drug carvedilol, used to treat cardiovascular conditions, is known to exist in distinct crystalline forms. Polymorphs II and III and the hydrate are characterized by variations in their molecular packing and conformation. This study deals with the spectroscopic (supported by quantum chemistry calculations) characterization of carvedilol structures. Band assignments were performed considering the isolated molecules and periodic calculations. We discuss the correlation between the vibrational modes and the intermolecular forces in the crystalline structures. Towards a better understanding of the intermolecular interactions, Hirshfeld surface was used. Besides band shifts related to stretching vibrations of N-H and O-H groups, differences between other modes have shown the possibility of using infrared spectroscopy to distinguish the crystal forms; technique routinely used in quality control of pharmaceutics. According to the spectroscopic analysis, the N-H groups participate in stronger bonds in the polymorph III, which contributes to its greater stability. With Hirshfeld surface we concluded that the bond with the nitrogen of the aliphatic chain participating as hydrogen acceptor in polymorph II is responsible for the pointy peaks in the fingerprint plot. This can explain why polymorph II shows lower dissolution in acid medium, as described in a previous work of our group.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we propose and experimentally investigate an optical sensor based on a novel combination of a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) with a permanent magnet to measure electrical current in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The proposed device uses a neodymium magnet attached to the grating structure, which suffers from an electromagnetic force produced when the current flows in the wire of the UAV engine. Therefore, it causes deformation on the sensor and thus, different shifts occur in the resonant bands of the transmission spectrum of the LPFG. Finally, the results show that it is possible to monitor electrical current throughout the entire operating range of the UAV engine from 0 A to 10 A in an effective and practical way with good linearity, reliability and response time, which are desirable characteristics in electrical current sensing.

ABSTRACT

Due to the importance of heterotrophic bacteria in biogeochemical cycles and their influence on water quality, many studies have assessed the composition of the bacterial community. Most of these were made in temperate freshwaters. Eighteen heterotrophic bacteria communities distributed over time and space in the water column of Carioca Lake, not exposed to anthropogenic activities, were analyzed to characterize their composition. A polyphasic approach was used, including 16S rDNA restriction analysis, 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, BIOLOG Ecoplates and statistical methods. The physiological profiles among the 18 microbial communities were diverse. Clustering analysis and the metabolic fingerprint of the Biolog Ecoplate(TM) system data separated the communities based on temporal scale. A set of 673 isolates were recovered on high nutrient medium. The 673 isolates obtained yielded 360 Amplified Ribosomal DNA Restriction Analysis (ARDRA) Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs). Most (313) of the ARDRA patterns, OTUs, were from isolates obtained in a single sampling point, in temporal and spatial scales, indicating changes in the bacterial community. A subset of representative isolates for each ARDRA OTU was identified by 16S rRNA gene fragment sequencing and categorized into five phyla, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Deinococcus-Thermus, represented by 38 genera. The results of this work contribute to a better understanding about the phylogeny of tropical freshwater heterotrophic bacteria.
