ABSTRACT

Cervical Cancer (CC) is one of the most prevalent neoplasms among women, considered the leading cause of gynecological death worldwide, and the fourth most common type of cancer. Regional metastasis is closely related to the low effectiveness of treatment, and validating biomarkers can optimize accuracy in diagnosis and prognosis. Among the potential biomarkers associated with disease metastasis are circular RNAs (circRNAs), whose altered expression has been linked to CC progression. In this context, this systematic review aims to compile information on the clinical-pathological significance and describe the biological function of circRNAs. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to include relevant literature, followed by in silico analysis. Additionally, we employed the UALCAN tools to search for host genes of circRNAs and expression data, miRTargetLink 2.0 to predict interactions of microRNA target genes and the Cytoscape software to predict possible interactions of microRNA target genes. According to the research, most circRNAs were found to be overexpressed and described as regulators of processes such as invasion, cell proliferation, apoptosis and migration. They were also implicated in clinical significance, including metastasis, TNM staging and microRNA interactions. CircRNAs may participate in critical processes in tumorigenesis; therefore, understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms of gene regulation in CC can contribute to the accuracy of diagnosis, prognosis and therapy.

BACKGROUND: Disorders of mineral metabolism occur in most patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The aim of this work was to correlate parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels with urinary magnesium excretion in patients with non-dialysis dependent CKD. METHODS: Cross-sectional study. Concentrations of creatinine, magnesium, calcium, phosphate, parathyroid hormone (PTH), 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were determined in blood samples. The assessment of urinary magnesium levels was performed by means of total daily excretion and by the excretion fraction (FEMg). RESULTS: The study evaluated 163 patients with a mean age of 60.7 ± 11.7 years and 51.0% were male. In the highest quartile of PTH (>89.5pg/mL), the mean levels of FEMg and ALP were higher (p<0.05). In the unadjusted regression analysis, the following variables were related to serum PTH levels: FEMg (odds ratio (OR) = 1.12; 95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.02-1.23), calcium (OR = 0.45; 95% CI: 0.22-0.90), ALP (OR = 1.02; 95% CI: 1.00-1.03) and eGFR (OR = 0.92; 95% CI: 1.00-1.03). After an adjusted analysis, only one FEMg and ALP will remain correlated with PTH. CONCLUSION: In patients with non-dialysis dependent CKD, FEMg and ALP were some variables that remained associated with PTH.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Although carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is considered a surrogate marker of subclinical atherosclerosis, with known value in risk stratification, its routine use in hypertensive patients is not recommended. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of subclinical atherosclerosis through measurement of CIMT and its impact on reclassification of risk in hypertensive patients. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 94 middle-aged (56.99±11.89 years) hypertensive outpatients without overt cardiovascular disease, 68.1% female. All participants underwent clinical examination, biochemical tests, echocardiogram and measurement of CIMT by high-resolution ultrasound. RESULTS: Although the majority of patients were stratified as low (63.5%) or intermediate risk (23%) according to their Framingham score, a high prevalence (75.3%) of increased CIMT was observed in the overall sample, including in the low (61%) and intermediate risk groups (93.8%). CIMT measurement resulted in risk reclassification of 70.31% of the patients, 61% of those at low risk being reclassified as intermediate risk and 93.8% of those at intermediate risk being reclassified as high risk. CONCLUSION: In these hypertensive outpatients, predominantly middle-aged and female, CIMT measurement revealed a high prevalence of subclinical atherosclerosis and resulted in risk reclassification in the majority of cases.
