ABSTRACT

Injections of adrenaline produced an immediate rise in peripheral absolute eosinophil count in cases of tropical pulmonary eosinophilia, but a fall or no change in other conditions with similar clinical manifestations. A similar early eosinophilic effect was noted in control guinea pigs as well as in Ascaris larvae-fed guinea pigs. The effect of adrenaline on eosinophil counts in cases of tropical pulmonary eosinophilia was not paralled by effects on total erythrocyte or leucocyte counts or on packed cell volumes. The early eosinophilic effects of adrenaline in guinea pigs was blocked by pehntolamine but no be propranalol. Adrenaline-induced changes on eosinophil counts may be used as a disgnostic test of tropical pulmonary eosinophilia.

ABSTRACT

PIP: An estimated 55 million women terminated their pregnancy by abortion in 1971, according to a survey of 208 countries. Undoubtedly a good number of abortions occurred in India. Some are legal abortions performed under controlled conditions but most are illegal. The mortality and morbidity of illegal abortion are summarized. There is a need for evolution in attitudes toward abortion to eliminate these risks. Although a permissive abortion law was passed in India in 1972, there is a very great need to increase the number of adequately trained physicians to perform abortions and to increase the number of facilities at which abortions are made available.^ieng

ABSTRACT

PIP: The taming of nature has neutralized many of the natural controls of population. We have achieved comfort, security, and mobility, but the liabilities include dwindling resources, pollution, individual and social neurosis, overcrowding, and rapid urbanization. As nature loses her controls, population continues multiplying without a check. Though the need for multiplication for survival has diminished, children are still viewed as emotional needs, the ultimate projection of love. The norm of the 2-3 child family should be adopted as quickly as possible. All available media should be used in a judicious and balanced manner to meet individual needs of groups and communities.^ieng
