ABSTRACT

This study assessed the efficacy of adsorption for eliminating the agricultural pesticide cypermethrin (CP) from wastewater using various adsorbents: silica, malachite, and magnetite. Magnetic nanocomposites (NCs) (with varying amounts of Fe3O4 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 wt/wt %) were synthesized, including Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs), bicomposites, and tricomposites, calcined at 300 and 500 °C, and then tested for CP removal. The study was conducted in two phases, with the objective of initially assessing how effectively each individual NP performed and then evaluating how effectively the NCs performed when used for the adsorption of CP. Notably, the Fe3O4-malachite combination exhibited superior CP removal, with the 0.25-Fe-M NC achieving the highest adsorption at 635.4 mg/g. This success was attributed to the large surface area, magnetic properties of Fe3O4, and adsorption capabilities of malachite. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) isotherm analysis indicated that the NCs had potential applications in adsorption and separation processes. The scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy revealed the spherical, irregular shaped morphology of the synthesized NPs and NCs. However, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of surface functionalized materials such as surface functionalized malachite [Cu2CO3(OH)2] with Fe3O4 and SiO2 may be complicated by the specific functionalization method used and the relative amounts and crystallographic orientations of each component. Therefore, careful interpretation and analysis of the XRD pattern, along with other techniques, are necessary for accurate identification and characterization of the functionalized material. The originality of this study lies in its comprehensive investigation of several adsorbents and NCs for CP removal at neutral pH. The innovation stems from the synergistic action of Fe3O4 and malachite, which results in improved CP removal due to their combined surface properties and magnetic characteristics. The application of magnetic NCs in adsorption and separation, as validated by BET isotherm analysis, highlights the potential breakthrough in addressing pesticide contamination.

ABSTRACT

Vitamin B12 deficiency results in multisystem manifestations. A 30years-old man presented with progressive weakness of lower limbs along with numbness. Patient had pale colour and noticed progressive pigmentation over dorsal and palmar aspects of both the hands and the feet. Neurological examination revealed absent ankle jerks, sensory impairment until T5 level, loss of joint position sensation and positive Romberg's sign. Workup showed macrocytic anaemia and hypersegmented neutrophils. There was no evidence of hypocortisolism. Magnetic Resonance Imaging of brain and spine was normal; however, Electromyography/Nerve conduction studies were suggestive of demyelinating neuropathy. His clinical and lab findings were suspicious of B12 deficiency, which was found to be very low. Hyperpigmentation is rare in B12 deficiency as presenting symptoms and diagnosis may be overlooked. Therefore, vitamin B12 levels should be checked as any delay in diagnosis and treatment will result in progression of Subacute Combined Degeneration of the spinal cord to the extent that it becomes irreversible.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: A comparatively high prevalence of comorbidities among African-American/Blacks (AA/B) has been implicated in disparate survival in breast cancer. There is a scarcity of data, however, if this effect persists when accounting for the adverse triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) subtype which occurs at threefold the rate in AA/B compared to white breast cancer patients. METHODS: We reviewed charts of 214 white and 202 AA/B breast cancer patients in the NCI-SEER Connecticut Tumor Registry who were diagnosed in 2000-2007. We employed the Charlson Co-Morbidity Index (CCI), a weighted 17-item tool to predict risk of death in cancer populations. Cox survival analyses estimated hazard ratios (HRs) for all-cause mortality in relation to TNBC and CCI adjusting for clinicopathological factors. RESULTS: Among patients with SEER local stage, TNBC increased the risk of death (HR 2.18, 95 % CI 1.14-4.16), which was attenuated when the CCI score was added to the model (Adj. HR 1.50, 95 % CI 0.74-3.01). Conversely, the adverse impact of the CCI score persisted when controlling for TNBC (Adj. HR 1.49, 95 % CI 1.29-1.71; per one point increase). Similar patterns were observed in SEER regional stage, but estimated HRs were lower. AA/B patients with a CCI score of ≥3 had a significantly higher risk of death compared to AA/B patients without comorbidities (Adj. HR 5.65, 95 % CI 2.90-11.02). A lower and nonsignificant effect was observed for whites with a CCI of ≥3 (Adj. HR 1.90, 95 % CI 0.68-5.29). CONCLUSIONS: comorbidities at diagnosis increase risk of death independent of TNBC, and AA/B patients may be disproportionately at risk.

ABSTRACT

The premature activation of digestive proenzymes, specifically proteases, within the pancreatic acinar cell is an early and critical event during acute pancreatitis. Our previous studies demonstrate that this activation requires a distinct pathological rise in cytosolic Ca(2+). Furthermore, we have shown that a target of aberrant Ca(2+) in acinar cells is the Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent phosphatase calcineurin (PP2B). In this study, we hypothesized that PP2B mediates in vivo protease activation and pancreatitis severity. To test this, pancreatitis was induced in mice over 8 h by administering hourly intraperitoneal injections of the cholecystokinin analog caerulein (50 microg/kg). Treatment with the PP2B inhibitor FK506 at 1 and 8 h after pancreatitis induction reduced trypsin activities by greater than 50% (P < 0.005). Serum amylase and IL-6 was reduced by 86 and 84% relative to baseline (P < 0.0005) at 8 h, respectively. Histological severity of pancreatitis, graded on the basis of pancreatic edema, acinar cell vacuolization, inflammation, and apoptosis, was reduced early in the course of pancreatitis. Myeloperoxidase activity from both pancreas and lung was reduced by 93 and 83% relative to baseline, respectively (P < 0.05). These data suggest that PP2B is an important target of the aberrant acinar cell Ca(2+) rise associated with pathological protease activation and pancreatitis.
