ABSTRACT

Although thin elastomer films of polymer nanoparticles are regarded as environmentally friendly materials, the low mechanical strength of the films limits their use in various applications. In the present study, we investigated the fracture resistance of latex films composed of acrylic nanoparticles where a small quantity of a rotaxane crosslinker was introduced. In contrast to conventional nanoparticle-based elastomers, the latex films composed of the rotaxane-crosslinked nanoparticles exhibited unusual crack propagation behavior; the direction of crack propagation changed from a direction parallel to the crack to one perpendicular to the crack, resulting in an increase in tear resistance. These findings will help to broaden the scope of design of new types of tough polymers composed of environmentally friendly polymer nanoparticles.

ABSTRACT

Molecular spintronic devices are gaining popularity because the organic semiconductors with long spin relaxation times are expected to have long spin diffusion lengths. A typical molecular spintronic device consists of organic molecules sandwiched between two magnetic layers, which exhibits magnetoresistance (MR) effect. Nanosized devices are also expected to have a high spin polarization, leading to a large MR effect owing to effective orbital hybridization. However, most studies on nanosized molecular spintronic devices have investigated the MR effect at low temperatures because of the difficulty in observing the MR effect at room temperature. Here we focus on high-mobility molecules expected to show long spin diffusion lengths, which lead to the observation of the MR effect in nanoscale junctions at room temperature. In this study, we fabricate magnetic nanojunctions consisting of high-mobility molecules, 2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (C8-BTBT), sandwiched between two Ni78Fe22 thin films with crossed edges. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images reveal that C8-BTBT molecular layers with smooth and clear interfaces can be deposited on the Ni78Fe22 thin-film edges. Consequently, we observe a clear positive MR effect, that is, R P < R AP, where R P and R AP are the resistances in the parallel (P) and antiparallel (AP) configurations, respectively, of two magnetic electrodes in the Ni78Fe22/C8-BTBT/Ni78Fe22 nanojunctions at room temperature. The obtained results indicate that the spin signal through the C8-BTBT molecules can be successfully observed. The study presented herein provides a novel nanofabrication technique and opens up new opportunities for research in high-mobility molecular nano-spintronics.

ABSTRACT

This dataset includes two kinds of data (for inventory analysis in Table A1 to A13, and precondition of waste and recycle for plastic and cardboard in Table A14) for conducting life cycle assessment (LCA) of strawberry-package supply chain with considering food loss during transportation Inventory analysis includes input data for LCA analysis. The data in the inventory was referenced from the publication of Plastic Waste Management Institute Plastic Waste Management Institute, (2017) and calculated based on the damage area ratio measured in our co-submitted article (Sasaki et al., 2022). This data helps to reproduce the article (Sasaki et al., 2022) for inventory analysis and re-analyze the environmental impact through the life cycle of strawberry assessed in the co-submitted article. Data of waste (incineration and landfill) and recycle ratios for plastic was collected from the previous reports of the publication Basic Knowledge of Plastic Recycle 2021 (Plastic Waste Management Institute, 2021), and data of the ratios for cardboard was referenced from Transition of Collect Rate on Cardboard (Ministry of the Environment (MOE), 2016). Ratios in this data show Japan-specialized values and is useful for creating the inventory.

ABSTRACT

Unlike rigid microparticles, soft and deformable elastomer (rubber) microspheres were found to exhibit a non-close-packed arrangement on solid substrates after the evaporation of water from their dispersions. The microscopic observation revealed that individual microspheres are ordered in regular intervals at the air/water interface of a sessile droplet and remain fixed on the substrate without being affected by the capillary forces during evaporation due to their deformability. Moreover, using the Langmuir-Blodgett method, thin films of non-close-packed structures could be successfully generated over large areas. Our findings may potentially help to control the arranged structures of elastomer microspheres, which can be expected to improve the nano-science and technology for the precise control for e.g. surface patterning.

ABSTRACT

Steady-state flow and elastic behavior is investigated for the moderately concentrated binary suspensions of soft microgels (pastes) with chemically dissimilar surfaces, and various degrees of size- and stiffness disparities. The pastes of poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (N) and poly(N-isopropyl methacrylamide) (NM) microgels with different values of yield strain γc (γNc > γNMc) are employed as the components. For the single microgel pastes (φ ≈ 1 where φ is apparent volume fraction), the values of γc are governed by the chemical species of constituent polymer in microgel surface whereas γc is insensitive to cross-link density and particle size. We demonstrate that the binary N/NM pastes with large size disparity (RN/NM = DN/DNM < 0.26 where D is the microgel diameter) at low φN (φN: weight fraction of small N microgels) exhibit the peculiarities in several rheological aspects, i.e., the two-step yielding in steady-state flow, and their values of γc and equilibrium shear modulus (G0) being equivalent to those of the single large NM microgel paste. These peculiarities are attributed to the characteristic packing resulting from large size disparity in which all or almost of the small N microgels tend to be accommodated in the gap between the large NM microgels even in moderately concentrated state. This characteristic packing substantially masks the contribution of the small N microgels at low φN, explaining the φN-independent G0 and γc as well as the first yielding governed solely by the large NM microgels. The second yielding results from the emerged contribution of the small N microgels expelled out from the gap by the positional rearrangements after the first yielding. The binary homo-N/N pastes with the similarly large size disparity at low φsmall also exhibit the φsmall-independent values of G0, but they show one-step yielding, indicating that the two-step yielding requires not only sufficiently large size disparity but also chemical dissimilarity (different values of γc) between the two components.
