ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the large arteries and is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) globally. Increased levels of adhesion molecules in cardiac tissue serve as prognostic markers for coronary artery occlusion risk. Given the antioxidant properties of bilirubin and its inverse correlation with atherosclerosis, this study aimed to assess the beneficial effects of bilirubin on atherosclerotic indices and heart structure in high-fat diet-fed diabetic rats with atherosclerosis. METHODS: Atherosclerosis was induced in three out of five groups of adult male Sprague Dawley rats through a 14-week period of high-fat diet (HFD) consumption and a single low dose of streptozotocin (STZ) (35 mg/kg). The atherosclerotic rats were then treated with intraperitoneal administration of 10 mg/kg/day bilirubin for either 6 or 14 weeks (treated and protected groups, respectively), or the vehicle. Two additional groups served as the control and bilirubin-treated rats. Subsequently, the mRNA expression levels of vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1), intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), lectin-like LDL receptor 1 (LOX-1), and the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) were analyzed using quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Histopathological and stereological analyses were performed to assess changes in the heart structure. RESULTS: Bilirubin significantly decreased the expression of VCAM-1, ICAM-1, LOX-1, and iNOS genes in the treated group. Moreover, bilirubin mitigated pathological damage in the left ventricle of the heart. Stereological analysis revealed a decrease in the left ventricle and myocardium volume, accompanied by an increase in vessel volume in rats treated with bilirubin. CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate that mild hyperbilirubinemia can protect against the progression of atherosclerosis and heart failure by improving lipid profile, modulating adhesion molecules, LOX-1, and iNOS gene expression levels.

ABSTRACT

Myocardial Infarction (MI) commonly referred to as a heart attack, results from the abrupt obstruction of blood supply to a section of the heart muscle, leading to the deterioration or death of the affected tissue due to a lack of oxygen. MI, poses a significant public health concern worldwide, particularly affecting the citizens of the Chittagong Metropolitan Area. The challenges lie in both prevention and treatment, as the emergence of MI has inflicted considerable suffering among residents. Early warning systems are crucial for managing epidemics promptly, especially given the escalating disease burden in older populations and the complexities of assessing present and future demands. The primary objective of this study is to forecast MI incidence early using a deep learning model, predicting the prevalence of heart attacks in patients. Our approach involves a novel dataset collected from daily heart attack incidence Time Series Patient Data spanning January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021, in the Chittagong Metropolitan Area. Initially, we applied various advanced models, including Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), Error-Trend-Seasonal (ETS), Trigonometric seasonality, Box-Cox transformation, ARMA errors, Trend and Seasonal (TBATS), and Long Short Time Memory (LSTM). To enhance prediction accuracy, we propose a novel Myocardial Sequence Classification (MSC)-LSTM method tailored to forecast heart attack occurrences in patients using the newly collected data from the Chittagong Metropolitan Area. Comprehensive results comparisons reveal that the novel MSC-LSTM model outperforms other applied models in terms of performance, achieving a minimum Mean Percentage Error (MPE) score of 1.6477. This research aids in predicting the likely future course of heart attack occurrences, facilitating the development of thorough plans for future preventive measures. The forecasting of MI occurrences contributes to effective resource allocation, capacity planning, policy creation, budgeting, public awareness, research identification, quality improvement, and disaster preparedness.

BACKGROUND: Lichen planus (LP) is a common inflammatory condition of unknown etiology that commonly affects the skin and mucous membranes. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a noninvasive technique for identifying early retinal vascular impairment in systemic disease without clinical damage by imaging deep and superficial capillary networks. AIMS: To assess the impacts of LP on the choroid and assess vascular changes in retinal capillary density using OCTA. METHODS: This single-center prospective case-control study included 30 therapeutic-naïve LP patients and 30 age and sex-matched healthy individuals. All study subjects underwent a complete ophthalmological examination, including best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) measurement using a Snellen chart, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement, and fundus examination. They were then examined using spectral domain OCT and choroidal thickness was measured. The vessel density of the superficial and deep capillary networks was measured and assessed using OCTA. RESULTS: Patients had significantly thicker choroidal and retinal thickness than controls, with subfoveal, nasal, and temporal areas showing a significant difference. A significantly higher vascular density in the superficial capillary plexus, particularly in the nasal perifoveal area, was found compared to the control group. Significantly, higher vascular density in the deep capillary plexus in the parafoveal area compared to controls was reported. Significant correlations were found between visual acuity and IOP, and age, duration of disease, and severity of disease. CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first to reveal that LP patients exhibit choroidal changes and retinal vascular alterations compared to healthy controls.

ABSTRACT

Accurately calling indels with next-generation sequencing (NGS) data is critical for clinical application. The precisionFDA team collaborated with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) and successfully completed the NCTR Indel Calling from Oncopanel Sequencing Data Challenge, to evaluate the performance of indel calling pipelines. Top performers were selected based on precision, recall, and F1-score. The performance of many other pipelines was close to the top performers, which produced a top cluster of performers. The performance was significantly higher in high confidence regions and coding regions, and significantly lower in low complexity regions. Oncopanel capture and other issues may have occurred that affected the recall rate. Indels with higher variant allele frequency (VAF) may generally be called with higher confidence. Many of the indel calling pipelines had good performance. Some of them performed generally well across all three oncopanels, while others were better for a specific oncopanel. The performance of indel calling can further be improved by restricting the calls within high confidence intervals (HCIs) and coding regions, and by excluding low complexity regions (LCR) regions. Certain VAF cut-offs could be applied according to the applications.

BACKGROUND: Disasters have affected the physical and mental health of people around the world. Since nurses are frontlines in disasters, it seems necessary to prepare for this responsibility. This study investigates the effect of psychological first-aid virtual education on the communication skills of nurses in disasters such as COVID pandemic. METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial, 55 nurses were selected by purposive sampling method from two hospitals in Isfahan and Tehran, Iran in December-November 2022 and randomly replaced in the intervention group who participated in psychological first aid virtual training and control group. The data were collected through the personal information form and Communication Skills -Test-Revised (CSTR). RESULTS: Two groups were homogeneous in terms of communication skills (p = 0.177), the total score of communication skills was significant between the two groups after the intervention (p < 0.0001). Regarding communication skills, in the pre-intervention phase, the subscale of "the ability to receive and send messages" and "insight into the communication process" the difference before the intervention was not significant between the two groups (p > 0.05). However, it was significant between the two groups after the intervention (p < 0.05), and regarding "emotional control", "listening skills", and "communication along with assertiveness" the difference before and after the intervention was not significant between the two groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Pre-disaster training and virtual education can increase nurses' communication skills in their ability to handle a disaster such as COVID pandemic. Virtual education of post-disaster psychological interventions is suggested. ABSTRACT

Background: Lipotoxicity, caused by adipocyte triglyceride over-accumulation, contributes to obesity-related comorbidities such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, respiratory dysfunction, and osteoarthritis. This study focuses on determining how sirtuin-1 (SIRT-1) mediates quercetin's (QCT) effect on 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Key aspects of this study include preventing adipogenesis, inducing lipolysis, and stimulating adipocyte apoptosis. Methods: 3T3-L1 adipocytes underwent treatment with varying QCT doses, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and the SIRT-1 inhibitor EX-527, followed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide [MTT] assay for cell viability assessment. Furthermore, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction measured mRNA expression levels of adipogenesis markers (fatty acid synthase [FASN] and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma [PPARγ]), lipolysis markers (adipose triglyceride lipase [ATGL] and hormone-sensitive lipase [HSL]), and apoptosis markers (B-cell lymphoma2 [Bcl-2], Bcl-2 Associated -X-protein [BAX] and Caspase-3). Results: The data showed that LPS + QCT significantly reduced cell viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner, unaffected by LPS + QCT + EX-527. Treatment with LPS + QCT did not affect FASN and PPARγ expression but significantly increased ATGL and HSL mRNA expression compared with LPS alone. Interestingly, EX-527 reversed the effects of LPS + QCT on lipogenesis and lipolysis markers completely. QCT enhanced apoptosis in a SIRT-1 independent pattern. Conclusion: The data suggest that QCT suppresses adipogenesis while increasing lipolysis via SIRT-1. However, QCT's effects on apoptosis appear to be independent of SIRT-1. These findings provide further evidence for QCT's effects on adipocytes, particularly its interaction with SIRT-1.

ABSTRACT

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is becoming a more common endoscopic imaging modality for detecting and treating disease given its high resolution and image quality. To use OCT for 3-dimensional imaging of small lumen, embedding an optical scanner at the distal end of an endoscopic probe for circumferential scanning the probing light is a promising way to implement high-quality imaging unachievable with the conventional method of revolving an entire probe. To this end, the present work proposes a hollow and planar micro rotary actuator for its use as an endoscopic distal scanner. A miniaturized design of this ferrofluid-assisted electromagnetic actuator is prototyped to act as a full 360° optical scanner, which is integrated at the tip of a fiber-optic probe together with a gradient-index lens for use with OCT. The scanner is revealed to achieve a notably improved dynamic performance that shows a maximum speed of 6500 rpm, representing 325% of the same reported with the preceding design, while staying below the thermal limit for safe in-vivo use. The scanner is demonstrated to perform real-time OCT using human fingers as live tissue samples for the imaging tests. The acquired images display no shadows from the electrical wires to the scanner, given its hollow architecture that allows the probing light to pass through the actuator body, as well as the quality high enough to differentiate the dermis from the epidermis while resolving individual sweat glands, proving the effectiveness of the prototyped scanner design for endoscopic OCT application.

Background: There are various materials used for socket preservation following dental extraction. The aim of the present animal study was to histologically investigate the efficacy of buccal fat autotransplantation on alveolar bone regeneration following dental extraction. Study design: In this prospective, double-blind laboratory experiment with a split-mouth design, 16 mandibular second premolar teeth in eight beagle dogs were extracted, and half of the extraction sockets were randomly filled using buccal fat autotransplantation. Other samples were left untouched to heal normally by the formed blood clot. Buccal fat autotransplantation was the primary predictor variable, and the type and amount of newly formed bone were the primary outcome variables. Assessment methods were the H & E coloring technique and histomorphometric evaluation. The significance level was set at 0.05, and data was subjected to Chi-Square and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests using SAS statistical software version 9.4. Results: From the total number of 16 samples in 8 dogs, 50% of the samples in the intervention group represented inflammation with lower intensity compared to 33% in the control group; however, this difference was not considered statistically significant (Chi-Square test, P-value = 0.55). Wilcoxon test results showed no statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding the mean amount of total bone formation (Z = 0.00, P-value = 1.00). Conclusion: It was inferred from the outcomes of the present study that when compared to the normal healing of the socket, buccal fat autotransplantation did not represent with superior outcome concerning the socket bone regeneration.

This research aims to assess the rheological and mechanical characteristics of Self-compacting concrete (SCC) incorporating waste tire rubber aggregates (WRTA) as an interim substitute for coarse aggregates. However, the standard experimental modeling approach has significant obstacles when it comes to overcoming the nonlinearity and environmental susceptibility of concrete parts. Therefore, linear regression (LR) and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) were used as two standard single machine learning (ML) models to predict the aforementioned rubberized SCC features. In this study, conventional coarse aggregates were supplanted with WRTA at 0%, 5%, 10%, and 20% to uncover the optimal proportion of coarse aggregates substituting rubber. To find the optimum amount of WRTA to use as a substitute, the study follows the impacts of rubber on the self-compacting rubberized concrete's (SCRC) rheological and mechanical characteristics. The consequences on fresh properties were investigated by the slump flow, J-ring, and V-funnel tests, while compressive and splitting tensile strengths tests were conducted to assess mechanical properties. Increasing WRTA test outputs indicated a deterioration in workability and hardened qualities. While a 10% swapping ratio is deemed feasible for producing SCRC, optimal results were achieved by reducing environmental impacts and efficiently managing a significant volume of rubber tire waste with a 5% substitution of rubber within the coarse aggregates. The research findings indicated a noticeable decrease in fresh properties as the WRTA content increased. Notably, after 28 days, a 10% WRTA substitution led to a 34% reduction in compressive strength and a 28% decrease in splitting tensile strength, satisfying ACI standards. Furthermore, XGBoost demonstrated superior predictive performance with the highest R2 values, outperforming the LR model and affirming its efficacy in delivering more accurate predictions.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation is an important factor contributing to obesity-induced metabolic disorders. Different investigations confirm that local inflammation in adipose issues is the primary reason for such disorder, resulting in low-grade systemic inflammation. Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and epigenetic modification are among the varied properties of Quercetin (QCT) as a natural flavonoid. OBJECTIVE: The precise molecular mechanism followed by QCT to alleviate inflammation has been unclear. This study explores whether the anti-inflammatory effects of QCT in 3T3-L1 differentiated adipocytes may rely on SIRT-1. METHODS: The authors isolated 3T3-L1 pre-adipocyte cells and exposed them to varying concentrations of QCT, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and a selective inhibitor of silent mating type information regulation 2 homolog 1 (SIRT-1) called EX-527. After determining the optimal dosages of QCT, LPS, and EX-527, they assessed the mRNA expression levels of IL-18, IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α, SIRT-1, and adiponectin using quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). RESULTS: The study showed considerable cytotoxic effects of LPS (200 ng/mL) + QCT (100 µM) + EX-527 (10 µM) on 3T3-L1 differentiated adipocytes after 48 h of incubation. QCT significantly upregulated the expression levels of adiponectin and SIRT-1 (p < 0.0001). However, introducing SIRT-1 inhibitor (p < 0.0001) reversed the impact of QCT on adiponectin expression. Additionally, QCT reduced SIRT-1-dependent pro-inflammatory cytokines in 3T3-L1 differentiated adipocytes (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: This study revealed that QCT treatment reduced crucial pro-inflammatory cytokines levels and increased adiponectin levels following LPS treatment. This finding implies that SIRT-1 may be a crucial factor for the anti-inflammatory activity of QCT.

Background: Studies suggest tantalum (Ta) implants may have inherent antibacterial properties. However, there is no consensus regarding the effectiveness of Ta in preventing periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) after revision total hip arthroplasty (rTHA). Methods: We searched 5 main databases for articles reporting the rate of PJI following rTHA using Ta implants from inception to February 2022. The PJI rates of the Ta group were meta-analyzed, compared with the control group, and represented as relative risks (RRs) in forest plots. Results: We identified 67 eligible studies (28,414 joints) for assessing the prevalence of PJI following rTHA using Ta implants. Among these studies, only 9 compared the Ta implant group with a control group. The overall PJI rate following rTHA using Ta implants was 2.9% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.2%-3.8%), while it was 5.7% (95% CI = 4.1%-7.8%) if only septic revisions were considered. Comparing the Ta and control groups showed a significantly lower PJI rate following all-cause rTHA with an RR = 0.80 (95% CI = 0.65-0.98, P < .05). There was a trend toward lower reinfection rates in the Ta group after rTHA in septic cases, although the difference was not statistically significant (RR = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.44-1.29, P = .30). Conclusions: Ta implants are associated with a lower PJI rate following all-cause rTHA but not after septic causes. Despite positive results, the clinical significance of Ta still remains unclear since the PJI rate was only reduced by 20%. Level of Evidence: IV.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the popularity of clear aligners, their predictability has not been assessed adequately. Moreover, no study has investigated their effects on numerous dentomaxillary variables. Therefore, this study was conducted for the first time, assessing several new or controversial items. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of clear aligners on the vertical position of the molar teeth and the vertical and sagittal relationships of the face. METHODS: This preliminary retrospective before-after non-randomized clinical trial was performed on 168 observations of 84 patients (33.60±9.28 years, 54 females) treated with 0.75mm Invisalign appliances. Pretreatment and posttreatment values were measured for: mandibular plane angle, occlusal plane angle, Y-Axis, ANB, facial angle, lower anterior facial height, overbite, and the distances of the molars from the palate and mandibular plane were measured. The alterations in parameters caused by treatment (delta values) were calculated for each measurement. Effects of treatment and some parameters on delta values were analyzed statistically (α=0.05). RESULTS: Mean±SD of ΔMP-FH, ΔOP-FH, ΔY-Axis, ΔLAFH, ΔNPog-FH, ΔANB, ΔOverbite, ΔSNB, Δ6-PP, Δ7-PP, Δ6-MP, and Δ7-MP were respectively 0.11±1.61, 0.80±1.56, 0.15±1.18, 0.07±0.91, -0.22±1.25, 0.03±0.62, 0.04±1.15, -0.06±1.14, -0.36±0.94, -0.32±1.14, 0.19±0.96, 0.18±1.10. Only the alterations in OP-FH, 6-PP, and 7-PP were significant (P≤0.011). Age, sex, treatment duration, or pretreatment mandibular plane angle were not correlated with any delta values. However, the pretreatment occlusal plane angle was negatively correlated with ΔOP-FH and ΔY-Axis. Crowding was correlated negatively with ΔOP-FH and ΔY-Axis and positively with ΔNPog-FH. Overjet was negatively correlated with ΔANB and ΔOverbite (P≤0.035). CONCLUSIONS: Invisalign intruded first/second maxillary molars and increased the occlusal plane angle. Age, sex, and treatment duration were not correlated with post-treatment anatomic alterations.

BACKGROUND: In low- and middle-income countries, households mainly use solid fuels like wood, charcoal, dung, agricultural residues, and coal for cooking. This poses significant public health concerns due to the emission of harmful particles and gases. To address these issues and support Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopting cleaner cooking fuels like electricity and gas are acknowledged as a viable solution. However, access to these cleaner fuels is limited, especially in rural areas. METHODS: This study conducted a face-to-face survey with 1240 individuals in rural Bangladesh to explore the link between health issues and cooking fuel type, as well as barriers to transitioning to clean cooking. Using a convenient sampling technique across four divisions/regions, the survey gathered socio-demographic and health data, along with information on clean cooking barriers through a semi-structured questionnaire. Binary and multivariable logistic regression analyses were then employed to identify significant associations between cooking fuel type and health problems. RESULTS: The study revealed that a majority of participants (73.3%) relied on solid fuel for cooking. The use of solid fuel was significantly correlated with factors such as lower education levels, reduced family income, location of residence, and the experience of health issues such as cough, chest pressure while breathing, eye discomfort, diabetes, asthma, and allergies. Economic challenges emerged as the foremost obstacle to the adoption of clean cooking, accompanied by other contributing factors. CONCLUSION: The use of solid fuel in rural Bangladeshi households poses substantial health risks, correlating with respiratory, eye, cardiovascular, and metabolic issues. Lower education and income levels, along with specific residential locations, were associated with higher solid fuel usage. Economic challenges emerged as the primary obstacle to adopting clean cooking practices. These findings emphasize the need for implementing strategies to promote clean cooking, address barriers, and contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal targets for health and sustainable energy access in Bangladesh.

ABSTRACT

Dengue fever is a global public health concern, especially in countries like Bangladesh. This study examines youth perceived dengue risk, and preventive practices, providing valuable insights into their behavior regarding this mosquito-borne disease. A cross-sectional survey was undertaken in various regions of the Dhaka district in Bangladesh. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 1,358 participants using convenience sampling, spanning the period from September 2 to October 10, 2023. A semi-structured questionnaire covered informed consent, socio-demographic data, and questions about perceived dengue risk scale (12 items), and prevention practice (13 items). Participants' mean age was 22.02 ± 1.58 years. The average scores for perceived dengue risk, and prevention practices were found to be 51.39 ± 12.01 (out of 96), and 55.57 ± 14.55 (out of 104) respectively. Previous dengue history, history of other vector-borne diseases, gender, educational level, father's educational qualification, employment status, adequate sleep duration, father's occupation, etc. are factors associated with higher risk and prevention practices regarding dengue. ABSTRACT

The incidence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is on the rise, mirroring a global surge in diabetes and metabolic syndrome, as its major leading causes. NAFLD represents a spectrum of liver disorders, ranging from nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which can potentially progress to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Mechanistically, we know the unfolded protein response (UPR) as a protective cellular mechanism, being triggered under circumstances of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. The hepatic UPR is turned on in a broad spectrum of liver diseases, including NAFLD. Recent data also defines molecular mechanisms that may underlie the existing correlation between UPR activation and NAFLD. More interestingly, subsequent studies have demonstrated an additional mechanism, i.e. autophagy, to be involved in hepatic steatosis, and thus NAFLD pathogenesis, principally by regulating the insulin sensitivity, hepatocellular injury, innate immunity, fibrosis, and carcinogenesis. All these findings suggest possible mechanistic roles for autophagy in the progression of NAFLD and its complications. Both UPR and autophagy are dynamic and interconnected fluxes that act as protective responses to minimize the harmful effects of hepatic lipid accumulation, as well as the ER stress during NAFLD. The functions of UPR and autophagy in the liver, together with findings of decreased hepatic autophagy in correlation with conditions that predispose to NAFLD, such as obesity and aging, suggest that autophagy and UPR, alone or combined, may be novel therapeutic targets against the disease. In this review, we discuss the current evidence on the interplay between autophagy and the UPR in connection to the NAFLD pathogenesis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Previous research has suggested that the ELMO1 gene may play a role in the development of diabetic kidney disease. Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a serious complication of diabetes and the leading cause of chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE: This study aim was to systematically review and explore the association between ELMO1 gene polymorphisms and diabetic kidney disease. A comprehensive systematic review provides a clear conclusion and high-level evidence for the association between ELMO1 gene and DKD for future application in personalized medicine. METHODS: A comprehensive search of electronic databases, per PRISMA instructions, was conducted in Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, and PubMed databases from 1980 to January 2023. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using appropriate models. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed to explore potential sources of heterogeneity and assess the robustness of the findings. RESULTS: A total of 5794 diabetes patients with DKD, 4886 diabetes patients without DKD, and 2023 healthy controls were included in the 17 studies that made up this systematic review. In the investigation of DM (Diabetes Mellitus) with DKD vs. DM without DKD, the susceptibility for DKD for the EMLO1 rs741301 polymorphism indicated a significant difference under the dominant, homozygote, and recessive genetic models. The susceptibility for DKD for the EMLO1 rs1345365, rs10255208, and rs7782979 polymorphisms demonstrated a significant difference under the allele genetic models in the analysis of DM with DKD vs. DM without DKD groups. There was a considerable increase in DKD risk in the Middle East when the population was stratified by the region. CONCLUSION: The findings of the meta-analysis show that there are a significant connection between the EMLO1 rs741301 polymorphism and DKD susceptibility in overall analyses; as well as rs1345365, rs10255208, and rs7782979 polymorphisms; especially in the Middle East region.

ABSTRACT

The metastasis of melanoma cells to regional lymph nodes and distant sites is an important contributor to cancer-related morbidity and mortality among patients with melanoma. This intricate process entails dynamic interactions involving tumor cells, cellular constituents, and non-cellular elements within the microenvironment. Moreover, both microenvironmental and systemic factors regulate the metastatic progression. Central to immunosurveillance for tumor cells are natural killer (NK) cells, prominent effectors of the innate immune system with potent antitumor and antimetastatic capabilities. Recognizing their pivotal role, contemporary immunotherapeutic strategies are actively integrating NK cells to combat metastatic tumors. Thus, a meticulous exploration of the interplay between metastatic melanoma and NK cells along the metastatic cascade is important. Given the critical involvement of NK cells within the melanoma tumor microenvironment, this comprehensive review illuminates the intricate relationship between components of the melanoma tumor microenvironment and NK cells, delineating their multifaceted roles. By shedding light on these critical aspects, this review advocates for a deeper understanding of NK cell dynamics within the melanoma context, driving forward transformative strategies to combat this cancer.

The utilization of waste fly ash and natural jute fiber has drawn attention to producing sustainable concrete. However, there is a lack of studies to analyze the synergistic effect of jute fiber and fly ash on the properties of concrete. Hence, the aim of this study is to investigate the combined effect of fly ash concentration and the different sizes of jute fiber on the fresh, hardened, and non-destructive testing properties of concrete. Concerning the purpose, the concrete mixes were prepared with 0.2 % and 0.4 % jute fiber incorporating 0 %, 5 %, 10 %, and 15 % replacement of cement by fly ash in concrete. For the assessment of properties, slump, density, and compacting factor test was conducted at the fresh state of concrete, whereas mechanical properties such as compressive, splitting tensile, and flexure strength test were conducted at 7 and 28 days. In addition, the non-destructive test (NDT) was also carried out to predict the destructive compressive strength by rebound hammer at 28 days. The microstructure property of optimum mix concrete was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It is observed that the incorporation of jute fiber decreased the slump, density, and compacting factor but increased the compressive, splitting tensile, and flexure strength, whereas the fly ash improved both fresh and hardened properties. Compared to the standard mix, fly ash-based JFRC mixtures have compressive strength improvements varying from 1.7 % to 25.9 %. The 10 % fly ash and 0.2 % volume of jute fiber exhibited a maximum of 11.64 % and 10.72 % splitting tensile and flexural strength enhancement at 28 days, respecting the control mix. In addition, the NDT strength assessment obtained 5.5 % less than destructive strength on average. From the SEM point of view, it is obtained that the 10 % fly ash with 0.2 % jute fiber composition matrix exhibits a better bonding interface and the cracking resistance nature of the concrete mix.

Purpose: Adolescents living in protracted conflict areas have mostly been perceived as passive recipients of the impact of events in their surroundings who are rarely considered agents of social transformation. But a growing body of research on adolescents' psychological development indicates that adolescents actively perceive concepts like peace and their roles and responsibilities toward creating conditions for peace. Applying the Phenomenological Variant of Ecological Systems Theory, this study focuses on understanding how adolescents from Afghanistan with lifelong exposure to intractable conflict conceptualize peace. Methods: The study was conducted in the Bagrami, Paghman and Dih Sabz districts of Kabul City in Afghanistan. A semi-structured open-ended questionnaire was used to interview 63 male and female adolescents aged 13-19. The participants belonged to different ethnic groups, such as Pashtun, Hazara and Tajik. An inductive approach was applied to analyze the data using thematic analysis. Results: Three distinct themes about peace emerged from the data: peace based on individual emotions, social relations, and larger societal structures. Peace for adolescents had both personal and inner and social or outer dimensions. Afghan adolescents' conceptualization of peace is primarily based on their interaction with the micro-system. Home and family provided perceived calmness and normalcy, which characterized peace as individual emotion. Social relations, often determined by good communication, community cohesiveness, and social support between family members, neighbours, and ethnic groups, constituted adolescents' concepts about peace. Adolescents also demonstrated awareness of larger societal structures, such as the role of community leaders and government in ensuring perceived safety and security, forming their concepts of peace. Conclusion: Adolescents have meaningful voices capable of forming perceptions about peace. The microsystem of an adolescent's environment has a significant influence in the conceptualization of peace. This study contributes to expanding the knowledge on the underpinnings of peace by relating to developmental and peace psychology.

ABSTRACT

In the last two decades, advancements in positron emission tomography (PET) technology have increased the diagnostic accuracy of patients with large-vessel vasculitis (LVV). Numerous systematic reviews and meta-analyses have been conducted, and patients suspected of having LVV can be diagnosed earlier with 18F-FDG PET. Two subtypes, giant cell arteritis (GCA) and Takayasu arteritis (TA), will progress when their response to corticosteroids and enhanced immunosuppression is inadequate. In the majority of patients, disease activity cannot be monitored solely through laboratory procedures; consequently, glucose metabolism may be a source of potential biomarkers. In this article, we discuss the current state of 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging standards.
