ABSTRACT

AIM: The survival of indicator micro-organisms in aquatic systems is affected by both biotic and abiotic factors. Much of the past research on this topic has been conducted using laboratory-generated cultures of indicator bacteria. For this study, we used natural sources of faecal contamination as inoculants into environmental water samples, thereby representing the wide diversity of organisms likely to be found in faecal contamination. METHODS AND RESULTS: Rates of inactivation of water quality indicators, total coliforms (TC), Escherichia coli, enterococci (EC) and F+-specific coliphage were studied in three experiments using inoculants of sewage influent, sewage effluent and urban storm drain run-off. Effects of temperature, nutrients, total suspended solids, bacterial load and solar irradiation were studied in fresh and seawater matrices. Results demonstrated that temperature and solar irradiation had significant effects upon rates of inactivation (anova, P < 0.001). Inactivation rates were similar, regardless of the inoculant type. EC degraded the slowest in the dark with T90s of 115-121 and 144-177 h at 20 and 14 degrees C, respectively. When incubated in sunlight, EC was inactivated significantly more rapidly than either E. coli or F+-specific coliphage (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Inactivation of indicator bacteria is not dependent upon the original source of contamination. Inactivation rates of indicator bacteria were similar in fresh and seawater matrices. However, EC degraded more rapidly in sunlight than E. coli. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study suggests that the source of faecal contamination is not an important factor to inactivation rates of indicator bacteria. However, rates of inactivation of indicator bacteria are likely system specific.

ABSTRACT

According to a recently proposed distinction [1] between vision for perception and vision for action, visually guided movements should be largely immune to the perceptually compelling changes in size produced by pictorial illusions. Tests of this prediction that use the Ebbinghaus illusion have revealed only small effects of the illusion on grasp scaling as compared to its effect on perception [2-4]. Nevertheless, some have argued that the small effect on grasp implies that there is a single representation of size for both perception and action [5]. Recent findings, however, suggest that the 2-D pictorial elements, such as those comprising illusory backgrounds, can sometimes be treated as obstacles and thereby influence the programming of grasp [6]. The arrangement of the 2-D elements commonly used in previous studies examining the Ebbinghaus illusion could therefore give rise to an effect on grasp scaling that is independent of its effect on perceptual judgements, even though the two effects are in the same direction. We present evidence demonstrating that when the gap between the target and the illusion-making elements in the Ebbinghaus illusion is equidistant across different perceptual conditions (Figure 1a), the apparent effect of the illusion on grasp scaling is eliminated.

ABSTRACT

An inventory was conducted to assess the number, type, spatial distribution, and costs of microbiological monitoring programs in southern California marine waters from Point Conception to the US/Mexico International Border. The location of each sampling site was determined using global positioning system (GPS), and estimates of geographic coverage were determined using geographic information system (GIS) techniques. Twenty-one programs conducted 87,007 tests annually at 576 sites in the study area. The largest number of sites was sampled in Orange County, whereas the largest number of analyses was performed in Los Angeles County because monitoring programs in this area focused on daily monitoring. Fifteen of the 21 programs were managed by National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitted sewage effluent dischargers who sampled both offshore and shoreline waters and typically tested for three indicator bacteria (total coliform, fecal coliform, and enterococcus). Their combined efforts comprised 82% of all of the microbiological indicator analyses conducted on an annual basis. Five of the remaining monitoring organizations were public health agencies, which typically focus their efforts on testing only total coliforms. Laboratory methodology also varied considerably, with NPDES permittees predominantly utilizing membrane filtration while public health agencies generally used multiple tube fermentation or premanufactured test kits. Nearly three quarters of all the effort expended in southern California occurred along the shoreline as opposed to offshore locations. Two thirds of this shoreline effort was focused on high-use sandy beaches and in proximity to perennial fresh-water outlets (storm drains and creeks). Most sampling occurred at a set of fixed sites that were revisited frequently, but only represented about 7% of the total shoreline. We estimated that roughly $3 million is spent annually on monitoring bathing water quality in southern California, exceeding that spent in any other part of the country.
