ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to compare measured air and surface concentrations after application of biocidal spray products with concentrations simulated with the ConsExpo Web spray simulation tool. Three different biocidal spray products were applied in a 20 m3 climate test chamber with well-controlled environmental conditions (22 ± 1 °C, 50 ± 2% relative humidity, and air exchange rate of 0.5 h-1). The products included an insect spray in a pressurized spray can, another insect spray product, and a disinfectant, the latter two applied separately with the same pumped spray device. The measurements included released particles, airborne organic compounds in both gas and particle phase, and surface concentrations of organic compounds on the wall and floor in front of the spraying position and on the most remote wall. Spraying time was a few seconds and the air concentrations were measured by sampling on adsorbent tubes at 9-13 times points during 4 hr after spraying. The full chamber experiment was repeated 2-3 times for each product. Due to sedimentation the concentrations of the particles in air decayed faster than explained by the air exchange rate. In spite of that, the non-volatile benzalkonium chlorides in the disinfectant could be measured in the air more than 30 min after spraying. ConsExpo Web simulated concentrations that were about half of the measured concentrations of the active substances when as many as possible of the default simulation parameters were replaced by the experimental values. ConsExpo Web was unable to simulate the observed faster decay of the airborne concentrations of the active substances, which might be due to underestimation of the gravitational particle deposition rates. There was a relatively good agreement between measured surface concentrations on the floor and calculated values based on the dislodgeable amount given in the selected ConsExpo Web scenarios. It is suggested to always supplement simulation tool results with practical measurements when assessing the exposure to a spray product.

ABSTRACT

Integration of acquired immunity into microbial risk assessment for illness incidence is of no doubt essential for the study of susceptibility to illness. In this study, a probabilistic model was set up as dose response for infection and a mathematical derivation was carried out by integrating immunity to obtain probability of illness models. Temporary acquire immunity from epidemiology studies which includes six different Norovirus transmission scenarios such as symptomatic individuals infectious, pre- and post-symptomatic infectiousness (low and high), innate genetic resistance, genogroup 2 type 4 and those with no immune boosting by asymptomatic infection were evaluated. Simulated results on illness inflation factor as a function of dose and exposure indicated that high frequency exposures had immense immunity build up even at high dose levels; hence minimized the probability of illness. Using Norovirus transmission dynamics data, results showed, and immunity included models had a reduction of 2-6 logs of magnitude difference in disease burden for both population and individual probable illness incidence. Additionally, the magnitude order of illness for each dose response remained largely the same for all transmission scenarios; symptomatic infectiousness and no immune boosting after asymptomatic infectiousness also remained the same throughout. With integration of epidemiological data on acquired immunity into the risk assessment, more realistic results were achieved signifying an overestimation of probable risk of illness when epidemiological immunity data are not included. This finding supported the call for rigorous integration of temporary acquired immunity in dose-response in all microbial risk assessments.

ABSTRACT

The acute waste management problems, coupled with the proliferation of small scale industries in many developing countries, make low quality water treatment before use inevitable in the long run. These industries have the potential to discharge effluent containing chemicals and heavy metals into the environment. The indiscriminative use of pharmaceutical products by households in many of these countries is another source of health concern. Low quality water treatment in these countries has however been hampered by the high cost of infrastructure provision and maintenance. Cost-sharing among stakeholders appears to be a promising strategy to finance and maintain the wastewater treatment infrastructure. In this study therefore, the willingness and ability of urban open space commercial vegetable farmers to pay for reclaimed water for irrigation purposes has been assessed. One hundred open space commercial vegetable farmers and four vegetable farmers' associations were selected and interviewed in Kumasi in Ghana using semi-structured interview schedules and interview guides respectively. The results of the study show that approximately three out of every five vegetable farmers were willing to pay for reclaimed water for irrigation. The results further show that the probability of being willing to pay by farmers who agreed that the current water they used for irrigation was harmful is approximately 5.3 times greater than that of those who did not. The analysis of the farmers' ability to pay revealed that all the farmers would be capable of paying for reclaimed water at a price of US$0.11/m(3). This has implications for land tenure security and vegetable consumers' willingness to pay higher prices for the produce.
