ABSTRACT

We quantified long-term successional trajectories of canopy arthropods on six tree species in a tropical rainforest ecosystem in the Luquillo Mountains of Puerto Rico that experienced repeated hurricane-induced disturbances during the 19-yr study (1991-2009). We expected: 1) differential performances of arthropod species to result in taxon- or guild-specific responses; 2) differences in initial conditions to result in distinct successional responses to each hurricane; and 3) the legacy of hurricane-created gaps to persist despite subsequent disturbances. At least one significant effect of gap, time after hurricane, or their interaction occurred for 53 of 116 analyses of taxon abundance, 31 of 84 analyses of guild abundance, and 21 of 60 analyses of biodiversity (e.g., richness, evenness, dominance, and rarity). Significant responses were ∼60% more common for time after hurricane than for gap creation, indicating that temporal changes in habitat during recovery were of primary importance. Both increases and decreases in abundance or diversity occurred in response to each factor. Guild-level responses were probably driven by changes in the abundance of resources on which they rely. For example, detritivores were most abundant soon after hurricanes when litter resources were elevated, whereas sap-suckers were most abundant in gaps where new foliage growth was the greatest. The legacy of canopy gaps created by Hurricane Hugo persisted for at least 19 yr, despite droughts and other hurricanes of various intensities that caused forest damage. This reinforces the need to consider historical legacies when seeking to understand responses to disturbance.

ABSTRACT

Disturbances are abrupt events that dramatically alter habitat conditions and resource distribution for populations and communities. Terrestrial landscapes are subject to various disturbance events that create a matrix of patches with different histories of disturbance and recovery. Species tolerances to extreme conditions during disturbance or to altered habitat or resource conditions following disturbances determine responses to disturbance. Intolerant populations may become locally extinct, whereas other species respond positively to the creation of new habitat or resource conditions. Local extinction represents a challenge for conservation biologists. On the other hand, outbreaks of herbivorous species often are triggered by abundant or stressed hosts and relaxation of predation following disturbances. These insect responses can cause further changes in ecosystem conditions and predispose communities to future disturbances. Improved understanding of insect responses to disturbance will improve prediction of population and community dynamics, as well as ecosystem and global changes.

ABSTRACT

Forest canopy herbivores are known to increase rates of nutrient fluxes to the forest floor in a number of temperate and boreal forests, but few studies have measured effects of herbivore-enhanced nutrient fluxes in tropical forests. We simulated herbivore-induced fluxes in a tropical rainforest in Puerto Rico by augmenting greenfall (fresh foliage fragments), frassfall (insect feces), and throughfall (precipitation enriched with foliar leachates) in replicated experimental plots on the forest floor. Background rates of greenfall and frassfall were measured monthly using litterfall collectors and augmented by adding 10× greenfall or 10× frassfall to designated plots. Throughfall fluxes of NH(4), NO(3) and PO(4) (but not water) were doubled in treatment plots, based on published rates of fluxes of these nutrients in throughfall. Control plots received only background flux rates for these compounds but the same minimum amount of distilled water. We evaluated treatment effects as changes in flux rates for NO(3), NH(4) and PO(4), measured as decomposition rate of leaf litter in litterbags and as adsorption in ion-exchange resin bags at the litter-soil interface. Frass addition significantly increased NO(3) and NH(4) fluxes, and frass and throughfall additions significantly reduced decay rate, compared to controls. Reduced decay rate suggests that nitrogen flux was sufficient to inhibit microbial decomposition activity. Our treatments represented fluxes expected from low-moderate herbivore outbreaks and demonstrated that herbivores, at these outbreak levels, increase ecosystem-level N and P fluxes by >30% in this tropical rainforest.

ABSTRACT

The role of phytophagous insects in ecosystem nutrient cycling remains poorly understood. By altering the flow of litterfall nutrients from the canopy to the forest floor, herbivores may influence key ecosystem processes. We manipulated levels of herbivory in a lower montane tropical rainforest of Puerto Rico using the common herbivore, Lamponius portoricensis (Phasmatidea), on a prevalent understory plant, Piper glabrescens (Piperaceae), and measured the effects on nutrient input to the forest floor and on rates of litter decomposition. Four treatment levels of herbivory generated a full range of leaf area removal, from plants experiencing no herbivory to plants that were completely defoliated (>4,000 cm(2) leaf area removed during the 76-day study duration). A significant (P<0.05) positive regression was found between all measures of herbivory (total leaf area removed, greenfall production, and frass-related inputs) and the concentration of NO (3) (-) in ion exchange resin bags located in the litter layer. No significant relationship was found between any of the herbivory components and resin bag concentrations of NH (4) (+) or PO (4) (-) . Rates of litter decay were significantly affected by frass-related herbivore inputs. A marginally significant negative relationship was also found between the litter mass remaining at 47 days and total leaf area removed. This study demonstrated a modest, but direct relationship between herbivory and both litter decomposition and NO (3) (-) transfer to the forest floor. These results suggest that insect herbivores can influence forest floor nutrient dynamics and thus merit further consideration in discussions on ecosystem nutrient dynamics.

ABSTRACT

Decomposing coarse woody debris (CWD) is a conspicuous and important component of forest ecosystems. Seasonal temperature and precipitation patterns influence heterotroph activity, which determines the rate of CWD decomposition. We tested the hypothesis that moisture content and heterotroph community composition influence carbon flux in freshly-cut Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) logs. To evaluate the effects of physical penetration of bark and wood and transmission of basidiomycete compared with ascomycete fungi by insects, 360 experimental logs were assigned to five replicate sites, each with 12 heterotroph×moisture treatment combinations in 1995. Half of the logs in each heterotroph treatment received normal rainfall and half were placed individually under elevated clear plastic tents to reduce water inputs. Respiration was measured every 1-3 months. In 1996 and 1997 a different log representing each treatment combination was harvested from each replicate and analyzed for the presence of inoculated and colonizing fungi. Logs inoculated with decay fungi had higher respiration than uninoculated logs but this effect only approached significance (P=0.08) during the first season. Respiration was significantly higher in sheltered than in exposed logs. Our results indicate that respiration and wood decomposition rates may be depressed by high moisture content in the wet forests of the coastal Pacific Northwest.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to investigate the incidence, predictors, morbidity, and mortality associated with postoperative atrial fibrillation (AF) and its impact on intensive care unit (ICU) and postoperative hospital stay in patients undergoing cardiac surgery in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Postoperative AF after open cardiac surgery is rather common. The etiology of this arrhythmia and factors responsible for its genesis are unclear, and its impact on postoperative surgical outcomes remains controversial. The purpose of this special substudy was to elucidate the incidence of postoperative AF and the factors associated with its development, as well as the impact of AF on surgical outcome. METHODS: The study population consisted of 3855 patients who underwent open cardiac surgery between September 1993 and December 1996 at 14 VA Medical Centers. Three hundred twenty-nine additional patients were excluded because of lack of complete data or presence of AF before surgery, and 3794 (98.4%) were male with a mean age of 63.7+/-9.6 years. Operations included coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) (3126, 81%), CABG + AVR (aortic valve replacement) (228, 5.9%), CABG + MVR (mitral valve replacement) (35, 0.9%), AVR (231, 6%), MVR (41, 1.06%), CABG + others (95, 2.46%), and others (99, 2.5%). The incidence of postoperative AF was 29.6%. Multivariate logistic regression analysis of factors found significant on univariate analysis showed the following predictors of postoperative AF: preoperative patient risk predictors: advancing age (odds ratio [OR] 1.61, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.48-1.75, p < 0.001), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (OR 1.37, 95% CI 1.12-1.66, p < 0.001), use of digoxin within 2 weeks before surgery (OR 1.37, 95% CI 1.10-1.70, p < 0.003), low resting pulse rate <80 (OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.06-1.51, p < 0.009), high resting systolic blood pressure >120 (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.02-1.40, p < 0.026), intraoperative process of care predictors: cardiac venting via right superior pulmonary vein (OR 1.42, 95% CI 1.21-1.67, p < 0.0001), mitral valve repair (OR 2.86, 95% CI 1.72-4.73, p < 0.0001) and replacement (OR 2.33, 95% CI 1.55-3.55, p < 0.0001), no use of topical ice slush (OR 1.29, 95% CI 1.10-1.49, p < 0.0009), and use of inotropic agents for greater than 30 minutes after termination of cardiopulmonary bypass (OR 1.36, 95% CI 1.16-1.59, p < 0.0001). Postoperative median ICU stay (3.6 days AF vs. 2 days no AF, p < 0.001) and hospital stay (10 days AF vs. 7 days no AF, p < 0.001) were higher in AF. Morbid events, hospital mortality, and 6-month mortality were significantly higher in AF (p < 0.001): ICU readmission 13% AF vs. 3.9% no AF, perioperative myocardial infarction 7.41 % AF vs. 3.36% no AF, persistent congestive heart failure 4.57% AF vs. 1.4% no AF, reintubation 10.59% AF vs. 2.47% no AF, stroke 5.26% AF vs. 2.44% no AF, hospital mortality 5.95% AF vs. 2.95% no AF, 6-month mortality 9.36% AF vs. 4.17% no AF. CONCLUSIONS: Atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery occurs in approximately one third of patients and is associated with an increase in adverse events in all measurable outcomes of care and increases the use of hospital resources and, therefore, the cost of care. Strategies to reduce the incidence of AF after cardiac surgery should favorably affect surgical outcomes and reduce utilization of resources and thus lower cost of care.

ABSTRACT

The energy budget of the New Mexico range caterpillar, Hemileuca oliviae (Ckll.), was estimated on caterpillars reared on an artificial diet under constant conditions. There was a 54% average age-specific decrease in assimilation efficiency in the larval stages. Net production efficiency was relatively constant at 52%. Of the 26.77 cal/mg produced by the feeding larvae, 0.53 cal/mg were expended by the pupae and 0.59 cal/mg were expended by the adults. Since maintenance costs of the non-feeding stages accounted for only four percent of the larval production, that production was adequate for adult development and reproduction.
