ABSTRACT

The scientific community focused on nursing informatics can be described as a graph with the authors as vertices and the author-coauthor relationship as the connecting edges. Methods to describe and analyze networks like average path length, diameter, centrality measures, or partitioning into subcommunities are applied to the nursing informatics community. It is shown that the community consists of one large connected subnet with many small disjoint subnets, each representing one or several authors. The interconnectivity of the large subnet is quite high indicating an information flow along several different paths. Using different centrality measures important authors for e.g. the information flow can be identified. While each small disjoint subnet represents a small sub-community, the large central subnet can also be partitioned into subcommunities connected with each other. Some seem to be focused on specific aspects of nursing informatics.

ABSTRACT

The ICNP BaT has been developed as a web application to support the collaborative translation of different versions of the ICNP into different languages. A prototype of a web service is described that could reuse the translations in the database of the ICNP BaT to provide automatic translations of nursing content based on the ICNP terminology globally. The translation web service is based on a service-oriented architecture making it easy to interoperate with different applications. Such a global translation server would free individual institutions from the maintenance costs of realizing their own translation services.

ABSTRACT

To ease and speed up the translation of the ICNP version 1 into the German language a web service was developed to support the collaborative work of all Austrian, Swiss, and German translators and subsequently of the evaluators of the resultant translation. The web service does help to support a modified Delphi technique. Since the web service is multilingual by design it can facilitate the translation of the ICNP into other languages as well. The process chosen can be adopted by other projects involved in translating terminologies.

ABSTRACT

While this case study uses an example of a home health team, it is meant to describe a system in which clinicians and healthcare organizations specialize and develop expertise by performing a large volume of specific services, procedures for given medical conditions or diagnoses. We introduce the concept of "consumer as a direct employer" of healthcare services. In this model, nurses may work as independent contractors, or as a member of a team contracting out as a unit, as in our example of the Rhine Home Health Team. Nrses also may work as employees to healthcare organizations as they do today.

ABSTRACT

At the university of applied sciences in Germany a learning management system has been implemented. The migration of classic courses to a web-enhances curriculum can be categorized into three phases independent of the technology used. The first two phases "dedicated website" and "database supported content management system" are mainly concerned with bringing the learning material and current information online and making it available to the students. The goal is here to make the maintenance of the learning material easier. The third phase characterized by the use of a learning management system offers the support of more modern didactic principles like social constructionism or problem-oriented learning. In this papers the phases as they occurred with the migration of a course of nursing informatics are described and experiences discussed.. The absence of institutional goals associated with the use of a learning management system led to a bottom-up approach triggered by faculty activities that can be described by a promoter model rather than by a process management model. The use of an open source learning management systems made this process easier to realize since no financial commitment is required up front.
