ABSTRACT

We study soliton oscillations in a trapped superfluid Fermi gas across the Bose-Einstein condensate to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BEC-BCS) crossover. We derive an exact equation for the oscillation period in terms of observable quantities, which we confirm by solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Hence we reveal the appearance and dynamics of solitons across the crossover, and show that the period dramatically increases as the soliton becomes shallower on the BCS side of the resonance. Finally, we propose an experimental protocol to test our predictions.

ABSTRACT

We show that the decay of a soliton into vortices provides a mechanism for measuring the initial phase difference between two merging Bose-Einstein condensates. At very low temperatures, the mechanism is resonant, operating only when the clouds start in antiphase. But at higher temperatures, phase fluctuations trigger vortex production over a wide range of initial relative phase, as observed in recent experiments at MIT. Choosing the merge time to maximize the number of vortices created makes the interferometer highly sensitive to spatially varying phase patterns and hence atomic movement.

ABSTRACT

We investigate the effect of interatomic interactions on the quantum-mechanical reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates from regions of rapid potential variation. The reflection process depends critically on the density and incident velocity of the condensate. For low densities and high velocities, the atom cloud has almost the same form before and after reflection. Conversely, at high densities and low velocities, the reflection process generates solitons and vortex rings that fragment the condensate. We show that this fragmentation can explain the anomalously low reflection probabilities recently measured for low-velocity condensates incident on a silicon surface.

ABSTRACT

A controlled study, comparing computer- and conventional jig-assisted total knee replacement in six cadavers is presented. In order to provide a quantitative assessment of the alignment of the replacements, a CT-based technique which measures seven parameters of alignment has been devised and used. In this a multi-slice CT machine scanned in 2.5 mm slices from the acetabular roof to the dome of the talus with the subject's legs held in a standard position. The mechanical and anatomical axes were identified, from three-dimensional landmarks, in both anteroposterior and lateral planes. The coronal and sagittal alignment of the prosthesis was then measured against the axes. The rotation of the femoral component was measured relative to the transepicondylar axis. The rotation of the tibial component was measured with reference to the posterior tibial condyles and the tibial tuberosity. Coupled femorotibial rotational alignment was assessed by superimposition of the femoral and tibial axial images. The radiation dose was 2.7 mSV. The computer-assisted total knee replacements showed better alignment in rotation and flexion of the femoral component, the posterior slope of the tibial component and in the matching of the femoral and tibial components in rotation. Differences were statistically significant and of a magnitude that support extension of computer assistance to the clinical situation.

ABSTRACT

We have compared a new technique of computer-assisted knee arthroplasty with the current conventional jig-based technique in 70 patients randomly allocated to receive either of the methods. Post-operative CT was performed according to the Perth CT Knee Arthroplasty protocol and pre- and post-operative Maquet views of the limb were taken. Intra-operative and peri-operative morbidity data were collected and blood loss measured. Post-operative CT showed a significant improvement in the alignment of the components using computer-assisted surgery in regard to femoral varus/valgus (p = 0.032), femoral rotation (p = 0.001), tibial varus/valgus (p = 0.047) tibial posterior slope (p = 0.0001), tibial rotation (p = 0.011) and femorotibial mismatch (p = 0.037). Standing alignment was also improved (p = 0.004) and blood loss was less (p = 0.0001). Computer-assisted surgery took longer with a mean increase of 13 minutes (p = 0.0001).

ABSTRACT

We study the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice and harmonic trap. The condensates are set in motion by displacing the trap and initially follow simple semiclassical paths, shaped by the lowest energy band. Above a critical displacement, the condensate undergoes Bragg reflection. For high atom densities, the first Bragg reflection generates a train of solitons and vortices, which destabilize the condensate and trigger explosive expansion. At lower densities, soliton and vortex formation requires multiple Bragg reflections, and damps the center-of-mass motion.

ABSTRACT

Stasis ulcers are commonly the result of chronic venous insufficiency. We have recently assessed 15 patients with stasis ulcers that failed to heal after one year of routine wound care. All patients demonstrated a defect in hemostasis, and a biopsy revealed livido vasculitis. Eleven of fifteen patients were treated with clopidogrel and dalteparin, and 4 of 15 patients were treated with clopidogrel alone. Thirteen of fifteen patients (86.6%) completely healed within three months of starting antithrombotic therapy. Patients with stasis ulcers and chronic venous insufficiency who fail to heal with routine wound care should be subjected to biopsy, a procoagulant defect evaluation, and initiation of clopidogrel and dalteparin therapy if a defect is found.

ABSTRACT

A polypeptide growth factor has been partially purified from medium conditioned by the human adrenocortical carcinoma cell line SW13. This factor, designated h-TGFe, stimulates anchorage-independent growth of the SW13 cells. Similar activity was observed in human milk, and in conditioned media from seven of 14 epithelial cell lines. The SW13-derived activity is stable to low pH and 8M urea but labile to dithiothreitol and 2% sodium dodecyl sulfate. Human TGFe does not bind to heparin and fails to stimulate growth of endothelial cells in monolayer culture. The apparent molecular weight of h-TGFe is 59k by size exclusion chromatography in the presence of 8M urea and the activity binds strongly to cation exchangers. The activity elutes at 15-30% acetonitrile from a C18 reverse-phase column and has been partially purified by using a four-step chromatographic procedure. TGFe appears to be a novel growth factor produced by many epithelial cells and tissues.

ABSTRACT

Treatment of cattle during the middle of the luteal phase with appropriate doses of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) causes a 5 d extension of the estrous cycle. Three experiments were conducted to determine how treatment with hCG affected the pattern of secretion of prostaglandin F2 alpha, as indicated by blood levels of 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM). In experiment 1, Holstein cows were given saline (Sal) or hCG (10,000 IU, im) on d 10 of the estrous cycle and blood samples were collected over a 6 h period on d 14 and 18 during which oxytocin (10 and 100 IU, iv) was given at 2 and 4 h. Concentrations of PGFM before and after oxytocin were similar between Sal and hCG-cycles, but PGFM was higher on d 18 than d 14 (P less than 0.05). In experiment 2, episodic PGFM was measured from d 16 to 20 in cows given Sal or hCG on d 10. There was tendency for hCG to reduce PGFM baseline and pulse amplitude (P = 0.22). In experiments 1 and 2, estradiol increased during d 16 to 20 of Sal-cycles, but did not change during this period of hCG-cycles. Therefore, in experiment 3, Holstein heifers were given Sal or hCG (5000 IU, im) on d 10, followed by corn oil (Oil) or estradiol benzoate (EB; 200 micrograms, im, 2X/day) on d 15 to 18. No difference in progesterone secretion was observed between Sal-Oil and Sal-EB heifers; however, EB hastened luteolysis in hCG-treated heifers (P less than 0.05), without causing an increase in PGFM. Although subtle differences were seen in pulsatile PGFM, we conclude that hCG altered the pattern of estrogen secretion, and this led to delayed luteolysis.

ABSTRACT

3 alpha-Hydroxysteroid oxidoreductase (EC 1.1.1.50) was localized in the rat brain by cryostat sectioning, microassay, and neurochemical lesions. Single 16-microns sections were cut, homogenized, and assayed. In the olfactory tubercle 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid oxidoreductase activity is high in the piaglial layer at the surface, 20-fold lower at a depth of 50 microns, and 50-fold lower at a depth of 200 microns. A similar pattern of activity was seen in the olfactory bulb, the interpeduncular nucleus, the frontal pole of the cortex, and the frontoparietal cortex. When kainic acid, a toxin that destroys neurons but leaves glia and axons of passage intact, was injected into the olfactory tubercle, 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid oxidoreductase activity was undiminished whereas glutamic acid decarboxylase activity was reduced by 80%. This laminar distribution and insensitivity to kainic acid are consistent with a nonneuronal localization. The high concentration of astrocytes in the piaglial layer, where 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid oxidoreductase activity is highest, lead us to suggest that this enzyme is localized to astrocytes. The presence of particular enzymes in some brain regions and not in others determines which products are synthesized and which are inactivated in those regions. Thus, the location of 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid oxidoreductase and other steroid converting enzymes can affect the activity of neuronal circuits and the behaviours regulated by those circuits.

ABSTRACT

In attempts to examine the relationships between serologic and structural polymorphisms of HLA-DQ molecules we have analyzed several monoclonal antibodies generated against polymorphic determinants on HLA-DQ molecules. One antibody, SFR20-DQw3, has a serologic reactivity like that of the previously characterized anti-DQw3-like monoclonal antibody, IVD12, but differs from IVD12 in its affinity for DQw3 molecules associated with DR4 and DRw9 haplotypes. Two other monoclonal antibodies have identical serologic and molecular specificity, and react with a subset of DQw3 positive cells; they have been designated SFR20-DQ beta 5. Biochemical analysis of the DQ molecules carried by DQw3-positive cell lines associated with different DR haplotypes (DR4, DR5, DRw8, DRw9, DRw12), reveal the presence of at least three different kinds of beta chains carrying the DQw3 epitope. All the cell lines bound by SFR20-DQ beta 5 (DR5, DRw8, and DRw12) possess DQ beta chains of indistinguishable electrophoretic mobility, which are different from the DQ beta chains of DQw3 cell lines not bound by this antibody while DQw3 beta chains carried by DR4 and DRw9 haplotypes are distinct from DQ beta 5-positive BLCL and from each other. The serologic reactivity of antibody DQ beta 5 correlates perfectly with an RFLP of the DQ beta gene designated DQw3.1 (Kim et al.: PNAS 828139, 1985), and with the serologic specificity TA10 as defined during the Ninth International Workshop (Schreuder GMT et al.: Histocompatibility Testing 1984). SFR20-DQ beta 5 reacts with a separated beta chain by Western blot analysis. The finding of indistinguishable beta chain electrophoretic mobility for all DQ beta 5/TA10 positive cell lines tested provide the molecular basis for these specificities, and strongly suggest that antibody SFR26-DQ beta 5 detects a single allele of the multiple DQ beta alleles which can contribute to the formation of the DQw3 specificity.

ABSTRACT

The objective was to determine factors that affect the expression of estrus. Thirteen lactating Holstein cows were ovariectomized about 4 to 6 wk postpartum and then challenged repeatedly with progesterone and estradiol benzoate to induce estrus six times during the postpartum period. Each challenge included 5 d when the cow was primed with progesterone through insertion of a progesterone-impregnated, foam rubber pessary. Estradiol benzoate (1 mg) was injected intramuscularly 36 h after removal of the pessary. Groups of two to three cows each began the experiment at 3-mo intervals to avoid confounding treated simultaneously. Observations for estrous behavior were at 8-h intervals following each challenge. A minimum of three sexually active cows were always observed together to avoid differences in estrous behavior caused by having too few sexually active animals in the group. Observations for estrous behavior were at 8-h intervals following each challenge. During each observation, cows were observed for 30 min on dirt and for 30 min on concrete. Standing behavior was not influenced by postpartum interval, season of year, or milk yield. Mounting behavior increased from the first to the sixth postpartum challenge, but it was not affected by season of year or milk yield. Duration of estrus, mounting activity, and standing activity were greater on dirt than on concrete. These results indicate that the surface on which cows were observed had a profound effect on sexual behavior; however, postpartum interval, season of year, and milk yield were of minor importance.

ABSTRACT

We describe a simple procedure for the microassay of 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid oxidoreductase in homogenates of rat brain. This enzyme converts dihydrotestosterone to 3 alpha-androstandiol. We have mapped the distribution of the enzymatic activity in 14 regions of the rat brain. The highest activities were observed in homogenates of olfactory bulb (51/nmol/mg protein/h) and olfactory tubercle (29 nmol/mg protein/h). Substantially lower values were seen in the other brain regions, including thalamus, caudate nucleus, frontal cortex, hippocampus, hypothalamus, and preoptic area (6-20 nmol/mg protein/h).

ABSTRACT

We describe a simple procedure for the microassay of testosterone 5 alpha-reductase in homogenates of rat brain. This enzyme converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. We have used this assay to characterize the enzymatic activity and to map its distribution. The apparent Km is 4.1 x 10(-6) M and the Vmax is 85.6 pmol/mg protein/h. The pH optimum is broad and extends from pH 6.0 to 8.0. For the brain regions surveyed, testosterone 5 alpha-reductase activity varied over a 10-fold range. The highest activities were observed in homogenates of the midbrain and pons (37-39 pmol/mg protein/h). The lowest were seen in homogenates of the thalamus, caudate nucleus, frontal cortex, hippocampus, hypothalamus, olfactory tubercle, and preoptic area (3-7 pmol/mg protein/h).

ABSTRACT

Proportions of "lower" 16:1 and 18:1 trans acids (TL) and "higher" C20 and C22 trans acids (TH) in samples of depot fat taken at postmortem examination from 136 people who had died of ischaemic heart disease (cases) and from those who had died of unrelated causes (controls) have been determined. Whereas mean percentages of TH are virtually identical for cases and controls, the mean value of TL was significantly higher for the case specimens. Although these lower trans acids are present in small amounts in ruminant-animal fat, they are more characteristic of commercially hydrogenated fats. We conclude, therefore, that the cases consumed on average a higher proportion of those hydrogenated fats rich in 16:1 trans and 18:1 trans acids and a lower proportion of ruminant fat than did the controls.

ABSTRACT

The constituents of the fat of 136 decedents who had died of ischaemic heart disease are compared with the constituents of the fat from 95 controls who had died from other causes. The cases had a lower concentration of fatty acids (L) characteristic of ruminant animal fat and a higher concentration of total transunsaturated acids (T), but the concentrations of certain higher (C20 and C22 mostly monoenoic) acids (H) were similar. The ratio T/L was higher in the cases, which suggests that the cases may have consumed more hydrogenated fats in life than had the controls. The ratio T/L increased linearly with H within both the case and control specimens, which suggests in view of the similarity in the mean levels of H that the difference in trans contents may be concentrated in the lower (18:1 and 16:1) trans acids.

ABSTRACT

Fatty acids characteristic of ruminant-animal fat have been found to be present in significantly lower proportions in samples from the depot fat of persons dying of ischaemic heart disease (cases) than in specimens from persons dying of unrelated causes (controls). Although such acids are also present, in lesser amounts, in hydrogenated marine oils, this case-versus-control difference is difficult to explain other than on the basis that controls consumed a higher proportion of ruminant-animal fat in their total dietary fat than did the cases. The proportions of polyunsaturated acids and of certain higher (C20 and C22 mostly mono-enoic) acids in the depot fat of cases and controls are virtually identical. There is also no indication of any difference in degrees of saturation of fats between the case and control specimens.
