ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Chronic gastritis is a common diagnosis in dogs with signs of chronic vomiting. However, there is no data concerning endoscopic and histopathological agreement in dogs with chronic gastritis. Thus, a question should be raised whether taking gastroduodenal biopsies in dogs with chronic gastritis is necessary or not. Consequently, the purpose of the study was to compare the endoscopic and histopathological agreement in dogs with chronic gastritis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 22 non-pregnant client-owned dogs with the signs of chronic gastritis were enrolled in this prospective study. Procedures including clinical examination, blood analysis, and diagnostic imaging were performed before anaesthesia. Biopsies obtained from gastroduodenal sites were histopathologically evaluated. A total of 110 gastroduodenal samples were examined. RESULTS: Sixty-eight samples had abnormal histopathology and endoscopy while 11 showed normal histopathological and endoscopic evidence. CONCLUSION: The obtained data demonstrated that it is not necessary to take extra gastroduodenal biopsies in dogs with evidence of endoscopic gastroduodenitis. We also believe that further prospective studies, including cost and time effectiveness and more specific comparison between endoscopic appearance and histopathology, are necessary to make final recommendations regarding the need of using both procedures for definitive diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

A new method for detecting the rotational orientation and tracking the position of an inductively coupled radio frequency (ICRF) coil using a transmit array system is proposed. The method employs a conventional body birdcage coil, but the quadrature hybrid is eliminated so that the two excitation channels can be used separately. The transmit array system provides RF excitations such that the body birdcage coil creates linearly polarized and changing RF pulses instead of a conventional rotational forward-polarized excitation. The receive coils and their operations are not modified. Inductively coupled RF coils are constructed on catheters for detecting rotational orientation and for tracking purposes. Signals from the anatomy and from tissue close to the ICRF coil are different due to the new RF excitation scheme: the ICRF coil can be separated from the anatomy in real time, and after doing so, a color-coded image is reconstructed. More importantly, this novel method enables a real-time calculation of the absolute rotational orientation of an ICRF coil constructed on a catheter. Modified FLASH and TrueFISP sequences are used for the experiments. The acquired images from this technique show the feasibility of different applications, such as catheter tracking. Furthermore, applications where knowledge of the rotational orientation of the catheter is important, such as magnetic resonance-guided endoluminal-focused ultrasound, RF ablation, side-looking optical imaging, and catheters with side ports for needles, become feasible with this method.

ABSTRACT

Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) is one of the significant substances affecting the growth and development of cartilage tissue in the body. The aim of this study is to evaluate the possible histopathological effects of local IGF-1 injection on the viability of rabbit auricular cartilage autografts. To this end, the single-piece and sliced cartilage tissues obtained from 20 albino rabbits' auricula were implanted in the subcutaneous pockets created on the back skins of the experimental animals. Every two weeks IGF-1 (10 mg/ml) injections were performed on the autograft implants of one group and normal saline (0.9%) injections were performed on the other group. Experimental animals were sacrificed at the end of the third month. A total of 34 tissue samples obtained after dissection were evaluated and scored histopathologically according to their cartilage viability, environmental reaction, and regenerative activities. The intergroup evaluation carried out for the single-piece and sliced cartilage grafts revealed that there was statistically more cartilage viability and less foreign-body reaction in the IGF-1 group than the normal saline group (p<0.05). While there was a statistically significant difference between the groups for single-piece grafts regarding regenerative activity (p<0.05), there was no significant difference for sliced grafts. The IGF-1 group, however, showed more activity. The results we obtained point out to the fact that IGF-1 increases the tissue viability of the implanted auricular autograft and it suppresses immune modulation effect.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study compares to the increase in tissue temperature and the thermal histological effects of ultrasonic scalpel, bipolar and unipolar electrosurgery incisions in the tongue tissue of rabbits. This study evaluates the histopathological changes related to thermal change and the maximum temperature values in the peripheral tissue brought about by the incisions carried out by the three methods in a comparative way. To assess thermal tissue damage induced by the three instruments, maximum tissue temperatures were measured during the surgical procedure and tongue tissue samples were examined histopathologically following the surgery. The mean maximum temperature values of the groups were 93.93±2.76 Cº for the unipolar electrocautery group, whereas 85.07±5.95 Cº for the bipolar electrocautery group, and 108.23±7.64 Cº for the ultrasonic scalpel group. There was a statistically significant relationship between the increase in maximum temperature values and the separation among tissue layers, edema, congestion, necrosis, hemorrhage, destruction in blood vessel walls and fibrin accumulation, and between the existence of fibrin thrombus and tissue damage depth (p<0.05). It was concluded that the bipolar electrocautery use gives way to less temperature increase in the tissues and less thermal tissue damage in comparison to the other methods.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To compare histological and urodynamic outcome of the classical detrusorotomy with and without the aid of intravesical balloon distension. We also describe a new technique with multiple detrusor incisions instead of detrusorotomy. METHODS: A total of 24 animals were included in the study. Three different techniques of autoaugmentation cystoplasty were applied to surgically reduced bladders of 14 sheep. Five sheep underwent surgical reduction of bladder capacity as control group and five sheep underwent sham operation. In Group DIB (detrusor incision with balloon), standard whole thickness incisions on bladder wall were performed and a silicon balloon was inflated intravesically postoperatively. Group DMB (detrusorotomy with balloon) and Group DM (detrusorotomy) underwent standard detrusorotomy. After measuring capacities and compliances, animals were sacrificed on 90th postoperative day. Bladders were histopathologically evaluated. Expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), CD31, and microvessel density (MVD) was noted. Quantification of collagen subtypes was also performed. RESULTS: The mean capacity and compliance for Group DM and control were not significantly different and both were lower than other augmentation groups and sham. In Groups DMB and DM fibrosis was significantly increased. The VEGF expression was lower in Group DIB with respect to other augmentation groups whereas MVD was not significantly different. Measurement of total collagen and collagen subtypes revealed an increase in total collagen of groups DMB and DM when compared to other groups. Quantification of collagen subtypes demonstrated that types I and III were significantly increased in aforementioned groups. CONCLUSION: Autoaugmentation omentocystoplasty in sheep model does not result in a reliable increase in bladder capacity and compliance. Intravesical balloon inflation makes the achievement more pronounced and significantly increases the bladder capacity and compliance.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Recent experiments have shown that transcranial electrical stimulation significantly increases the potency and duration of the analgesic effects of opioids in humans and rats. In the present study, the influence of transcranial electrical stimulation (TCES) on the analgesic effect of remifentanil hydrochloride (HCl) in rats was determined. METHODS: Experiments were performed on 80 albino male Wistar rats. Rats were randomly assigned to four groups: remifentanil HCl, remifentanil HCl and TCES, TCES, and control (n=20/group). Remifentanil HCl was injected on the 55th minute. Analgesia was assessed using the wet tail-flick latency test. RESULTS: In the remifentanil HCl group, analgesia (10.85+/-1.04 s) was reached at the fifth minute, and the analgesia was high for the first 10 min. In the remifentanil HCl and TCES group, the latency time peaked (16.60+/-1.19 s) at the fifth minute. This peak was 150% higher than that for the remifentanil HCl group, and 251% higher than the control or TCES groups. Analgesia in the remifentanil HCl and TCES group was sustained for 20 min at a statistically higher rate than the other treatment groups (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: TCES markedly increased the duration and analgesic potency of remifentanil HCl in rats. This effect appeared to be related to the release of enkephalins from brain structures, thus enhancing opioid analgesia.
