ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Local fat accumulation is a health risk and this has raised interest in the development of aesthetic treatments, such as cryo-radiofrequency (CRF). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the consequences of CRF in adipose tissue remodeling in a model system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lean and high-fat diet-induced obese mice were assessed 7 days after one CRF application; and lean mice were assessed 0, 3, 6 and 12 h after one application of CRF. Assessments included histology, DNA degradation, gene expression, ELISA of cytokines, serum analysis and neutrophil presence. RESULTS: Unchanged fat mass was found 7 days after CRF in obese and lean mice. However, lean mice showed smaller adipocyte size with areas resembling a browning process. TNF levels, apoptotic cells, and UCP-1 expression increased 7 days after CRF in inguinal adipose tissue of lean mice. Although no differences were found in fat mass, adipocyte size decreased just after CRF and this changed was maintained until 12 h, with cells resembling beige adipocytes. CONCLUSION: We suggest that CRF therapy is capable of inducing thermogenic adipocytes in lean mice.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this research was to evaluate three grazing systems (GS) with elephant grass (EG) + ryegrass (RG) + spontaneous growing species (SGS); EG + RG + SGS + forage peanut (FP); and EG + RG + SGS + red clover (RC), in order to use the area in rotational grazing during the agricultural year. EG was planted in rows with a distance of 4m between each row. In the cool-season, RG was sowed between EG rows and FP was preserved on GS. The experimental design was completely randomized with three treatments (GS), two replicates (paddocks) and independent evaluations (grazing cycles). For the evaluation lactating Holstein cows receiving 1% of BW/day feed supplement concentrate were used. The herbage mass, botanical composition of pasture, structural component of EG and stocking rate were evaluated. Eight grazing cycles were performed during the experimental period. Grazing systems involving grass and legume forage in different cycles provided the use of the area during the agricultural year in rotational grazing with dairy cattle. Considering the predominance of the evaluations in each grazing, the mixed grazing systems have better results for both forage mass and stocking rate variables.

ABSTRACT

We present the case of a 65 years old male, admitted in the Hematology Department of the Universitary Emergency Hospital Bucharest, complaining of physical asthenia and weight loss; periodical medical examination has revealed splenomegaly and leucocytosis with lymphocytosis, persistent for the past 3 years. The clinical and paraclinical exam demonstrated splenomegaly (21 cm in diameter on computer tomography scan), hepatomegaly and generalized lymphadenopathies. The laboratory tests confirmed leucocytosis with lymphocytosis--a clonal population of B lymphocytes CD20+ CD19+ CD23+/- CD79b+(low), CD43+ FMC7+ CD5+ CD38+ ZAP70+ cyclin D1-. Lymph node and bone marrow biopsy together with flowcytometry established the diagnosis of Malignant non-Hodgkin Lymphoma--Atypical Splenic Marginal Zone B-cell lymphoma (aberrant expression of CD5) stage IVB, with leukemic picture, complicated with autoimmune hemolytic anemia with highly positive Coombs' tests. We performed therapeutic splenectomy, which was difficult because of the dimensions of the organ. The short term evolution was complicated by acute complete thrombosis of the splenic vein, but the long term evolution (1 year follow-up) was favorable--remission of anemia, significant improvement of performance status, decrease of leucocytosis and reduction of the tumoral mass.

ABSTRACT

The article presents the case study of a 78-year-old , female patient with a gastric schwannoma, with the symptoms of a superior digestive hemorrhage and secondary anemia. A surgical operation was performed and the patient was healed. The preoperative diagnosis carried out by means of echographic, endoscopic and computed tomography examinations was gastric tumour. Histopatological examination performed during the operation led to the final diagnosis of gastric schwannoma.
