ABSTRACT

The Hydrotrack, a treadmill immersed in a water bath, is designed to provide an in-office approach to aquatic therapy. 24 clinical clients in an outpatient sports medicine practice were invited to use the Hydrotrack as part of their rehabilitation treatment. Our purpose was to describe the way(s) in which the Hydrotrack is useful in rehabilitation treatment. Exercise protocols designed by a physical therapist were used for each subject. We monitored an external criterion, heart rate, to measure the subjects' exertion during the exercise process. Self-reported ratings of exercise efficacy and exertion were also used to quantify the subjects' performance on the Hydrotrack. Heart-rate values and self-report ratings supported the usefulness of this device in physical therapy.

ABSTRACT

A subsample of 33 subjects classified by interview as unusual sleepers were asked to record their sleep in the morning and stress and heart rate at bedtime (index of physiological arousal). Increased physiological activity was expected in long sleepers because they had been identified as worriers, i.e., show activated physiological arousal. These data were recorded for a month, but no statistically significant differences for the long sleepers were noted.

ABSTRACT

Sleep and stress patterns in 34 young adult sleepers were measured. Time series analysis of sleep report measured 6- and 3-day patterns of light stress preceding a change in sleep pattern for long (n = 15) and short or variable (n = 7 and 12) sleepers, respectively.

ABSTRACT

Sleep behavior and self-reported adjustment of 93 young adult sleepers were measured. The 34 unusual sleepers (short, long or variable) differed in adjustment from controls. 7 short sleepers reported more intense, worrisome responses than other unusual sleepers and controls.

ABSTRACT

This study validates the use of ambulatory EMG monitoring as a measure of exercise compliance. The model rehabilitative exercise used was the Prone Back Extension. Thirty-two undergraduate volunteers were videorecorded as they performed the exercise alone in a closed room. The correlation between a direct observation count of the number of repetitions and an independent EMG-based count was .95. EMG amplitude was examined by repetition and gender with regression and ANOVA. There were significant gender differences in the amplitude of EMG across repetitions. There were no significant differences by gender in the declining slope of amplitude across repetitions. This slope may represent a typical "fatigue" curve. Thus, not only the occurrence but also the intensity of exercise can be quantified.
