ABSTRACT

Composite films and nonwoven mats of the poly-3-hydroxybutyrate and chitosan natural polymers were prepared and investigated. DSC and FTIR techniques were used to confirm that P(3HB) blending with chitosan resulted in a decrease in P(3HB) crystallinity to 47% and 62% in the films and nonwoven mats, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy showed that addition of chitosan induced changes in the surface morphology of the composite films and a reduction in the diameter of ultrafine fibers in the nonwoven mats from 800 nm to 460 nm. The values of water contact angle for films (53°) and nonwoven mats (50.6°) suggested that chitosan enhanced hydrophilic properties and moisture absorption capacity of the composite materials. On the other hand, P(3HB) showed its reinforcing ability and improved the physical/mechanical properties of chitosan. The work included studies of in vitro biodegradation of the composite specimens and their ability to maintain cell growth and attachment in NIH 3T3 fibroblast culture.

ABSTRACT

The Maker fringes technique is extended to the case of nonlinear media with one-dimensional second-order nonlinear susceptibility modulation. For broadband radiation, second harmonic intensity oscillates in both spectral and angular domains, which can be considered random spectrally resolved Maker fringes. A theoretical approach is developed for modeling the second-harmonic generation in such domain structures, and the calculations are in excellent agreement with experimental results.

ABSTRACT

The nematic droplets with director configurations intermediate between the bipolar and radial structures have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The liquid crystal 4'-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) with a variable addition of the lecithin dispersed in polyvinylbutyral has been used. The characteristic textures of the droplets formed at various lecithin contents have been examined using polarizing microscope both in the crossed polarizers and without analyzer. The computer simulation has been performed for proper ordering of the director in spherical nematic droplets by minimizing the free energy in the one-constant approximation. The inhomogeneous boundary conditions with strong anchoring of the molecules at the interface have been used. The distribution of the anchoring angle at the droplet surface has been estimated based on analysis of observed patterns. The simulated textures of the droplets under crossed polarizers are shown to compare well with the experimental ones.
