Complex examination using fiber bronchoscopy under local anesthesia with urgent cytologic examination of samples was performed in 206 outpatients with clinically suspected lung cancer. Malignancy was diagnosed in 138 cases. Tumor was cytologically confirmed in 95.7% of cases; its pattern was established in 88.7%. It is inferred that cytologic method improves the diagnostic potential of fiber bronchoscopy and assures shorter duration of outpatient examination.

The analysis of the data of 352 fiber bronchoscopies performed in 142 cases of small-cell lung cancer before, in the course and after chemotherapy or chemoradiation treatment makes a case for complex application of X-ray and endoscopic procedures since the data on diagnosis and response to treatment obtained under the separate use of either procedure agreed in 67.7% and 80.3% of cases only.

The paper discusses the reliability of crypto-hem test (detection of occult blood in feces) in diagnosing large bowel tumors in the course of a mass screening. 1573 healthy subjects aged 45 years and older were examined. The results were positive in 24 (2%) out of 1190 screenees who were involved in the test and in 58 (4.9%) subjects the results were suspicious. Tumors were detected in 23 (95.9%) test-positive screenees: cancer--12.5, polyps--54.2 and villous tumor--29.2%. Crypto-hem test proved instrumental in mass screening. Due to its application, symptom-free rectal cancer was diagnosed in 0.2, villous tumor--0.6, and single adenomatous polyps--1.1%.

According to the authors' observations 236 patients with embolism of major arteries of the upper extremities were treated: conservative therapy-in 43, surgery-in 193. Since 1972 in the clinic a unique access in the ulnar fossa with exposure of the brachial artery bifurcation has beem employed for embolectomy from any artery of the upper extemity. A direct access is used only if the necessity of simultaneous correction of the affection leading to embolism (proximally located aneurysms, jugular ribs) might arise.
