ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the pain relief function of chemical sphincterotomy in patients undergoing haemorrhoid surgery and compare, through a meta-analysis, the different drugs used to treat this condition. METHODS: We conducted a search in databases including PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science. The methodological quality was evaluated using the Revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials (ROB2). The pain score was assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS) on day 1, day 2, and day 7, and a meta-analysis was conducted based on the use of random effects models. In addition, the subgroup analysis was evaluated based on the kind of experimental drugs. Heterogeneity and publication bias were assessed. RESULTS: Fourteen studies with a total of 681 patients were included in this meta-analysis, and all studies were randomized controlled trials RCTs. Chemical sphincterotomy showed better pain relief function than placebo on day 1 (SMD: 1.16, 95% CI 0.52 to 1.80), day 2 (SMD: 2.12, 95% CI 1.37 to 2.87) and day 7 (SMD: 1.97, 95% CI 1.17 to 2.77) after surgery. In the subgroup meta-analysis, we found that different drugs for chemical sphincterotomy provided different pain relief. CONCLUSION: Chemical sphincterotomy effectively relieves pain after haemorrhoidectomy, and calcium channel blockers have the best effect.

ABSTRACT

HD-Zip is a plant-specific transcription factor that plays an important regulatory role in plant growth and stress response. However, there have been few reports on the functions of members of the physic nut HD-Zip gene family. In this study, we cloned a HD-Zip I family gene from physic nut by RT-PCR, and named JcHDZ21. Expression pattern analysis showed that JcHDZ21 gene had the highest expression in physic nut seeds, and salt stress inhibited the expression of JcHDZ21 gene. Subcellular localization and transcriptional activity analysis showed that JcHDZ21 protein is localized in the nucleus and has transcriptional activation activity. Salt stress results indicated that JcHDZ21 transgenic plants were smaller and had more severe leaf yellowing compared to those of the wild type. Physiological indicators showed that transgenic plants had higher electrical conductivity and MDA content, and lower proline and betaine content compared with wild-type plants under salt stress. In addition, the expression of abiotic stress-related genes in JcHDZ21 transgenic plants was significantly lower than that in wild type under salt stress. Our results showed that ectopic expression of JcHDZ21 increased the sensitivity of transgenic Arabidopsis to salt stress. This study provides a theoretical basis for the future application of JcHDZ21 gene in the breeding of physic nut stress-tolerant varieties.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes a new method to prepare spherulites from normal corn starch by a combination of enzymatic (mixtures of α-amylase and amyloglucosidase) and acid hydrolysis followed by recrystallization of the hydrolyzed products. The resulting spherulites contained a higher proportion of chains with a degree of polymerization (DP) of 6-12 and a lower proportion of chains with DP of 25-36, compared to those of native starch. The spherulites had an even particle size of about 2 µm and a typical B-type crystallinity. The amounts of long- and short-range molecular order of double helices in starch spherulites were larger, but the quality of starch crystallites was poorer, compared to that of native starch. This study showed an efficient method for preparing starch spherulites with uniform granule morphology and small particle size from normal corn starch. The ratios of α-amylase and amyloglucosidase in enzymatic hydrolysis had little effect on the structure of the starch spherulites.
